Astrid Varnay article - your deletion restored

In the Astrid Varnay article, I questioned this sentence: "She was one of the five best-known Wagnerian heroic sopranos of her generation (the other four were Kirsten Flagstad, Gertrude Grob-Prandl, Birgit Nilsson, and Martha Mödl)." I see from the Talk page that you also questioned it in 2011, and in fact deleted the questionable text ("(the other four were Kirsten Flagstad, Gertrude Grob-Prandl, Birgit Nilsson, and Martha Mödl)") on that date, which I confirmed by checking the History page. But it looks like it's been restored sometime since then. I didn't care to take the time to figure out who and when. I agree with your deletion, but I didn't want to re-do it without checking with you. Any idea why it was restored? Maybe you can delete it again (I'm a relative novice at Wikipedia editing). I'm writing to you here because that activity happened seven years ago, and perhaps you're not still monitoring that page.

By the way, is this the optimal way to get a message to a Wikipedia editor (you)... to write on their personal Talk page?

Rank order of returning prime ministers

Hi Jack. You would be aware that returning prime ministers retain the rank order of their first appointment. For instance, Kevin Rudd is the 26th PM, not the 26th AND 28th PM. I am having disagreements over the rank of Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad. I have tried to correct his rank to 4th, but others keep insisting he is 4th and 7th PM. I tried to explain my position at Talk:Mahathir Mohamad#Mahathir is not the 7th Prime Minister but to no avail.

Do you know of any Wikipedia policies or guidelines to support my position, or any other existing protocols? Thanks, WWGB (talk) 00:38, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Different countries do this in different ways. Australia does it as you say. The USA has a different approach. The UK, as far as I know, doesn't number their PMs at all. R&J merge proposal

Hi Jack. Regarding your merge proposal of the two articles related to R&J films. Per WP:MERGE, starting a discussion is Step 1 (the optional notification of interested parties, in this case including WP:BARD, would be nice too); the merge tagging is Step 2. As it stands it's not clear what, exactly, you are proposing; what your rationale for it is; each article's merge template points at a different talk page for discussions; and neither talk page contains any relevant discussion. I would suggest you use the {{merge to}}/{{merge from}} templates and use |discuss= to point the discussion to a single talk page; and to start a section with your proposal and rationale that you can point it to.

Also, when you moved Romeo and Juliet (films) to List of films based on Romeo and Juliet you didn't move the talk page, with the result that the redirect page has old discussions and the WikiProject banners at Talk:Romeo and Juliet (films), while the new list article is empty except for a WIkiProject Redirects tag at Talk:List of films based on Romeo and Juliet.

Oh, and just to be up front: my base position here is opposed to merging the two, but I am open to various alternate proposals that may or may not resolve your concerns, depending on what those concerns actually are. --Xover (talk) 13:28, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Marika Sherwood

Far be it for me to.....I am not Marika Sherwood's mouthpiece. I am her son. She has no knowledge of computers and thus cannot contest the 'speedy deletion process. She is 80 years old. Even I find it inordinately difficult to navigate the admin Wikipedia pages, with the exception of reading the public pages, which I help fund with an annual donation. She has been an academic, researcher, writer, historian and lecturer since the late 1970s. Her list of publications is enormous, with at least 40% of them with people such as Routledge and IB Taurus. She is also a regular contributor to various academic journals, has written school history books, writes articles for newspapers such as the Guardian and magazines such as History Today and is the founder of the Black and Asian Studies Association at the London SOAS. A brief search on Google shows 1,310,000 results. A quick search of Amazon shows 11 titles. As I understand it the principal objection would appear to be that she owns her own publishing company. She started this in order to sell her research books in Africa, at cost price. Surely a worthy notion that other publishers might emulate. Another objection would appear to be that she is not be famous enough to be in Wikipedia. A lifetime's work and her Google listings should answer to that notion. For the record, I do not write nor publish anything, I am not involved in politics. Hello there, JackOfOz. I am new to wikipedia, and for future reference would like to know:

1. The reason my addition of a category to Nicolae Ceaușescu was reverted
2. If it is improper format to have a category redirect to a list
3. What the proper way of linking to a list an article's subject is included in if not adding it to a category that redirects to said list

You see, I created the category "Heads of regimes who were later imprisoned" because when I found the list, I noticed that almost none of the articles included in the list linked to the list itself, and wanted to remedy this. It was heads. (talk) 19:21, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I guess it's OK to have a category redirect to something else, since it's possible to do it. But that means there is no proper category, and articles should not contain such a category, just as they should not contain any red-linked categories (categories that do not exist at all).

No, I have no especial interest in him. I actually loathe motor sports, but for someone of my vintage it'd be hard not to be aware of his racing career, and his more recent litigation with his son. I just keep tabs on many well-known people and fix any obvious problems with their articles when they die. Then I depart the scene and leave it for those who are actually interested in them. When I was at the university in the seventies, I watched with a fellow student a television documentary in winch a French professor made the statement: "J.P. Sartre has made his private problem into a philosophy". My fellow mate immediately jumped: "He is not allowed to say that!" He was probably a better student then I was because I agreed with his statement and had no objections.

I didn't change his title. I changed the name of the article about him, in which his title is clearly spelt out. Our rules don't let us use such prenominal titles in article names, unless there is no alternative way of disambiguating them from other people of the same name. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?" Correct spelling of Rebecca West's birth name

Dear JackofOz, Thank you for attempting to correct my correction of Dame Rebecca West's birth name, but I assure you, you (and many others) are quite wrong. I regret to admit that I am partly responsible, as the executor of her literary estate and the first in the family to propagate information about her online. I mistakenly believed, for decades, that her original name was Cicely; it was not. Biographer Carl Rollyson gets it right; biographer Victoria Glendinning gets it wrong. Christopher Hitchens gets its wrong in his introduction to Black Lamb and Grey Falcon; the Penguin 1989 paperback edition of Rebecca's "Family Memories: An autobigraphical journey" gets it right on the fly sheet, and wrong in the appendix. I gather Cissie herself was fond of mis-spelling her own name -- she rarely used it. But if you examine the Wikipedia article on her, you will see there is a photo of her headstone, with her name clearly spelled "Cicily" -- I believe that should be definitive, no?
