Wanda W.

Thank you for having created her article, and updating. Sadly, all online sources are dead, - do you have copies, or remember? - She is worthy of In the news, but that would require every fact inline cited, sigh. She was the first violinist I heard in concert, remembered well. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:46, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

Yes, Gerda, I also saw/heard her play, in Brisbane in the late '60s or early '70s. And I have long loved her record of Kreisler favourites. No, I have no access to any sources any more. Sorry. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:02, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
I found one in German which supports a lot. I found another which is a blacklisted website, - the only one so far that had a place of death, infoglitz.com/polandeng/wanda-wilkomirska-is-dead-she-was-an-icon-of-the-polish-violin/ - Skolimów. Can't read this which mentions the same place. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:13, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Calling Poeticbent for help, to not repeat the same. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:16, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Using google translate, I incorporated two Polish obits, which covers a lot. Could you perhaps checks things not covered, such as that the Barbican first conductor changed, etc. - Not tremendously necessary for her bio, but once there, it should be sourced. Another wish: Formatting of the discography, link to pieces, italics for album titles, dates? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:01, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
By now, we also have a good obituary from The Telegraph, and a rather simple Associated Press one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:34, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
ITN is almost there. I wonder about links to composers, and their first names. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:33, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Why "humorist"?

Hi Jack, why the spelling "humorist" for Vinod Bhatt? Does India not follow British spelling, which is "humourist"? Regards, WWGB (talk) 01:54, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Yes, you may well be right. Feel free to revert me. Thanks. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 01:57, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Astrid Varnay article - your deletion restored

In the Astrid Varnay article, I questioned this sentence: "She was one of the five best-known Wagnerian heroic sopranos of her generation (the other four were Kirsten Flagstad, Gertrude Grob-Prandl, Birgit Nilsson, and Martha Mödl)." I see from the Talk page that you also questioned it in 2011, and in fact deleted the questionable text ("(the other four were Kirsten Flagstad, Gertrude Grob-Prandl, Birgit Nilsson, and Martha Mödl)") on that date, which I confirmed by checking the History page. But it looks like it's been restored sometime since then. I didn't care to take the time to figure out who and when. I agree with your deletion, but I didn't want to re-do it without checking with you. Any idea why it was restored? Maybe you can delete it again (I'm a relative novice at Wikipedia editing). I'm writing to you here because that activity happened seven years ago, and perhaps you're not still monitoring that page.

By the way, is this the optimal way to get a message to a Wikipedia editor (you)... to write on their personal Talk page?

Omc (talk) 03:39, 7 June 2018 (UTC)

Yes, this is the best way to contact a fellow editor.
I couldn't be bothered to track down who reinserted the offending text, or when, but I've now removed it again. Thanks for keeping an eye on this. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 23:41, 7 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks. Omc (talk) 16:54, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Rank order of returning prime ministers

Hi Jack. You would be aware that returning prime ministers retain the rank order of their first appointment. For instance, Kevin Rudd is the 26th PM, not the 26th AND 28th PM. I am having disagreements over the rank of Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohamad. I have tried to correct his rank to 4th, but others keep insisting he is 4th and 7th PM. I tried to explain my position at Talk:Mahathir Mohamad#Mahathir is not the 7th Prime Minister but to no avail.

Do you know of any Wikipedia policies or guidelines to support my position, or any other existing protocols? Thanks, WWGB (talk) 00:38, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Different countries do this in different ways. Australia does it as you say. The USA has a different approach. The UK, as far as I know, doesn't number their PMs at all. I don't know what Malaysia does. One thing's for sure: there is no one-size-fits-all for the numbering of heads of government. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 01:38, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

R&J merge proposal

Hi Jack. Regarding your merge proposal of the two articles related to R&J films. Per WP:MERGE, starting a discussion is Step 1 (the optional notification of interested parties, in this case including WP:BARD, would be nice too); the merge tagging is Step 2. As it stands it's not clear what, exactly, you are proposing; what your rationale for it is; each article's merge template points at a different talk page for discussions; and neither talk page contains any relevant discussion. I would suggest you use the {{merge to}}/{{merge from}} templates and use |discuss= to point the discussion to a single talk page; and to start a section with your proposal and rationale that you can point it to.

Also, when you moved Romeo and Juliet (films) to List of films based on Romeo and Juliet you didn't move the talk page, with the result that the redirect page has old discussions and the WikiProject banners at Talk:Romeo and Juliet (films), while the new list article is empty except for a WIkiProject Redirects tag at Talk:List of films based on Romeo and Juliet.

Oh, and just to be up front: my base position here is opposed to merging the two, but I am open to various alternate proposals that may or may not resolve your concerns, depending on what those concerns actually are. --Xover (talk) 13:28, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

German

So, you're just fine with users on the ENGLISH Wikipedia posting questions in German? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:12, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

No. If you wanted to address that issue, in the appropriate place, you'd have had no objection from me.
But here's the thing, mate: you obviously, and even by your own admission, are not skilled in German. That's fine, none of us is an expert in everything. So, why on earth do you insist on piping up when some expertise in German is required? Guessing is totally unacceptable. You know this, and I know you know this. But it seems you just can't help yourself. Being the first to respond to a ref desk question does not make you some sort of hero; when you do it inappropriately, it just makes you a dick. Time to grow up, act your age, and learn some damn self-discipline. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:20, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
I've asked the German-speaking respondent whether my question was factually correct or not. From what I can see, you yourself are in no position to make that judgment. As for your behavior in general, you seem OK most of the time, but once in a while (like today) you go off on these busybody rants, which serve no purpose other than maybe to vent, as if something bad has happened to you or you're short of sleep or something. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:24, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Or to put it more succinctly, I do not accept the premises of your complaint as being valid. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:29, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
(ec) And once again you refuse to actually engage with the substance of the charge against you, preferring to attack your interlocutor. Deflection is a childish way of dealing with issues.
Guessing, then asking the OP whether that's correct or not, is the most absurd thing I've ever heard. This is a reference desk, where people come to us for information and answers. Your reverse-engineering approach to the refdesk protocols is ludicrous. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:30, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Your complaint is invalid. Your premise is incorrect. Your assumptions are incorrect. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:33, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Oh, so you are a fluent German speaker after all? Do tell. If so, why do you need to guess ("Something about ...")? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:35, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Where does it say I am not allowed to ask an OP a question? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:38, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
You continue to deflect, as always. I should have known better than to bother. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 23:01, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
That other editor confirmed that my question was factually sound. Even so, I decided not to edit-war over your boxing it up. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:14, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
How gracious of you. May good things happen to you.  :) -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 01:58, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Marika Sherwood

Far be it for me to.....I am not Marika Sherwood's mouthpiece. I am her son. She has no knowledge of computers and thus cannot contest the 'speedy deletion process. She is 80 years old. Even I find it inordinately difficult to navigate the admin Wikipedia pages, with the exception of reading the public pages, which I help fund with an annual donation. She has been an academic, researcher, writer, historian and lecturer since the late 1970s. Her list of publications is enormous, with at least 40% of them with people such as Routledge and IB Taurus. She is also a regular contributor to various academic journals, has written school history books, writes articles for newspapers such as the Guardian and magazines such as History Today and is the founder of the Black and Asian Studies Association at the London SOAS. A brief search on Google shows 1,310,000 results. A quick search of Amazon shows 11 titles. As I understand it the principal objection would appear to be that she owns her own publishing company. She started this in order to sell her research books in Africa, at cost price. Surely a worthy notion that other publishers might emulate. Another objection would appear to be that she is not be famous enough to be in Wikipedia. A lifetime's work and her Google listings should answer to that notion. For the record, I do not write nor publish anything, I am not involved in politics. I merely assist her with all computer matters when I have the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CraigSherwood (talkcontribs) 19:33, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

A page you started (Adiemus) has been reviewed!

Thanks for creating Adiemus, JackofOz!

Wikipedia editor Lithopsian just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

It is good practice to examine articles linked to this one when you change the content from one meaning to another. In this case, I'm approving it anyway since the incoming links are all over the place, but they still need to be edited to point directly to the correct page instead of here. It would be polite for you to do that instead of leaving Wikipedia in a mess until someone else finds the time.

Nicolae Ceaușescu

Hello there, JackOfOz. I am new to wikipedia, and for future reference would like to know:

  1. The reason my addition of a category to Nicolae Ceaușescu was reverted
  2. If it is improper format to have a category redirect to a list
  3. What the proper way of linking to a list an article's subject is included in if not adding it to a category that redirects to said list

You see, I created the category "Heads of regimes who were later imprisoned" because when I found the list, I noticed that almost none of the articles included in the list linked to the list itself, and wanted to remedy this. It was heads. (talk) 19:21, 16 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi. I guess it's OK to have a category redirect to something else, since it's possible to do it. But that means there is no proper category, and articles should not contain such a category, just as they should not contain any red-linked categories (categories that do not exist at all).
There's no real need to link individual articles to any particular list. But if this is desired, you can add a "See also" section at the bottom, with a link to the list. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 19:23, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

"Neologism"

I wish I would be better at ease in the expression of matters not so futile like gratitude. Alas I did leave an edit summary with the intention of thanking you which I did find quite pitiful afterwards. My satisfaction is of having found out on the occasion that ugly neologism was almost correct, even though, that would have been in Spanish. I hope the resulting sum of this will be of leaving your spirits in the best of their states, e.g., high. Cheers! --Askedonty (talk) 19:05, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Can I ask you, as someone with seemingly some interest in this man, to please have a look at my addition to the Talk page today. Maybe you can help. HiLo48 (talk) 08:48, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

No, I have no especial interest in him. I actually loathe motor sports, but for someone of my vintage it'd be hard not to be aware of his racing career, and his more recent litigation with his son. I just keep tabs on many well-known people and fix any obvious problems with their articles when they die. Then I depart the scene and leave it for those who are actually interested in them. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 09:11, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
Likewise. Hence my plea on that page for someone who actually loves motor sport to do something about the referencing. No luck so far. HiLo48 (talk) 10:02, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Jumping to conclusions?

Dear JackofOz,

Thank you for your quick and open comment on my talk section of the Pier Paolo Pasolini article. Of course you are right about my "cluttered" writing, but I assure you that I was not critical or "flaming". I only wanted to share thoughts that came to me, reading this article.

Obliged.

145.129.136.48 (talk) 14:49, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. However, WP article talk pages are not for people "sharing their thoughts" when it's done with a view to coming up with labels or descriptions that are either contrary to, or never contemplated in, the published record. We base all our text content on published reliable sources. Engaging in original research is outright banned here. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:41, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

All right. You refer to "published reliable resources". Yes but my experience (born 1950) learned me that there are also "published(?) reliable thoughts". When I was at the university in the seventies, I watched with a fellow student a television documentary in winch a French professor made the statement: "J.P. Sartre has made his private problem into a philosophy". My fellow mate immediately jumped: "He is not allowed to say that!" He was probably a better student then I was because I agreed with his statement and had no objections.

My question is, why did you change my great grandfathers title from Sir. Anthony Jackson to Anthony Jackson (Soldier)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wetzel~izer (talkcontribs) 22:44, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

I didn't change his title. I changed the name of the article about him, in which his title is clearly spelt out. Our rules don't let us use such prenominal titles in article names, unless there is no alternative way of disambiguating them from other people of the same name. Witness Winston Churchill, not Sir Winston Churchill. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 09:55, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

  Happy Christmas!
Hello JackofOz,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 08:57, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Correct spelling of Rebecca West's birth name

Dear JackofOz, Thank you for attempting to correct my correction of Dame Rebecca West's birth name, but I assure you, you (and many others) are quite wrong. I regret to admit that I am partly responsible, as the executor of her literary estate and the first in the family to propagate information about her online. I mistakenly believed, for decades, that her original name was Cicely; it was not. Biographer Carl Rollyson gets it right; biographer Victoria Glendinning gets it wrong. Christopher Hitchens gets its wrong in his introduction to Black Lamb and Grey Falcon; the Penguin 1989 paperback edition of Rebecca's "Family Memories: An autobigraphical journey" gets it right on the fly sheet, and wrong in the appendix. I gather Cissie herself was fond of mis-spelling her own name -- she rarely used it. But if you examine the Wikipedia article on her, you will see there is a photo of her headstone, with her name clearly spelled "Cicily" -- I believe that should be definitive, no?

Photo of headstone for Dame Rebecca West, nee Cicily Isabel Fairfield, in Brookwood Cemetery, Woking, Surrey, UK.

Best wishes, Helen Macleod Atkinson (daughter of Norman Macleod, Rebecca West's nephew)

Hello, Helen. Thanks for that information.
If only it were the case that gravestones are incontrovertibly correct, all our lives would be so much the better. But sadly, not so. There have been many, many examples of incorrect names and dates appearing on gravestones, so we often have to look elsewhere for the truth. Birth certificates are the usual way to go. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:46, 9 January 2019 (UTC)
