2006 FIFA World Cup edit

Hi there. You fully protected the above article back on 15 December. It has now been fully protected for a few weeks because of edit warring, and you (and I) tried to engage those involved in the edit war to discuss the issues. However, no-one has thus far commented at all. What happens in cases like this? I have left a message on Talk:2006 FIFA World Cup asking if it should now be unprotected or changed to semi-protection, as no-one involved in the edit war seems willing to disuss their differences. Thank you. ♦Tangerines♦·Talk 19:04, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thats a good point about those involved waiting to see if it is unprotected. And as no-one has asked for it to be unprotected by adding the tag then maybe it is best left as it is for now. cheers.♦Tangerines♦·Talk 21:28, 4 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I was also set to update ITN with the Giants victory (using the format from last year), and then I got edit conflicted. :( I prefer the "to" instead of a dash. I think many recent sport scores on ITN have been featured like this. Nishkid64 (talk) 03:19, 4 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello Ian:

I came across a photo of yours on Wikimedia that I would like to use on my web site. This is the first time I've used wikimedia so I'm not real clear on the permissions. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Doug cartoon.gif) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Doug cartoon.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:20, 17 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Mega Millions logo.png edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Mega Millions logo.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Montenegrin football players edit

Hi Ian! Believe me one of my pet hates on wikipedia is articles about 18 year old Eastern European third league soccer players but there does seme to be some sort of coverage on pages like this. I can imagine that something could b e written about them to make them valid, although in regards to notability, I probably feel the same way! Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:27, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah they are pretty useless stubs, perhaps the creator of them could be prodded to include a valid source and at least some basic details (if they must be started!) . Regards. 12:41, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Skoda Auto edit

Note: This comment was merged with another section "allegedly," which seemed to be the same part of the message. I changed the level two section header of "allegedly" to dashes and removed a space at the beginning of the line immediately following the heading so that the page would format correctly. Also, I moved the signature to the bottom of the page so that the auto-archiving bot could process the message correctly. To see the original formatting of the message, please view the history of my talk page. If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 21:55, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ian, According to Wikipedia's own terms, the article for Skoda Auto (subsection criticism) is in breach on three counts: [1]

1) The sources quoted are from a forum which is speculative and factually incorrect. 2) The content of the sources are libelous. 3) The information contained within the entry is relating to an ongoing legal case that is subjudice with the courts of law here in India. The quote specifically states: "Skoda India authorized service center -- allegedly -- swapped parts from a car that was scheduled for service and replaced them with defective ones, resulting in an accident"

Kindly remove references (and block subsequent edits to this page) that reference the forum and details of the case. In addition, please remove the accompanying photograph which is in it's self part of the case! Skodaindia (talk) 12:05, 6 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Skoda India edit

Skoda India, Please donot remove any details pertaining to Skoda's Criticism, as it is very much true, Skoda being foolish trying to object their mistakes, instead they would have accepted the mistake initialy itself and should have closed this case before it have become like this. Now i dont think they will ever can stop this, as every individual is known to this issue and hesitant to the brand Skoda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.17.162.165 (talk) 03:30, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia tries to abide a policy of a neutral point of view. Completely removing a criticism section or piling on accusations is not the way to do this. Hopefully, interested parties can work toward a peaceful resolution on the talk page. I have reverted the complete removal of the "criticism" section, but have taken no further action. Good luck on a resolution. If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 04:22, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ian, Skoda has a clear vested interest in putting a lid on the Criticism section. I've tried to keep the tone of the section as neutral as possible. Since Skoda India has a problem with the word "allegedly", I've removed that too and changed the reference from the forum thread to a more solid newspaper article. Is Skoda India going to next say that the newspaper article is factually incorrect and libelious? Nowhere do I mention the details of the ongoing legal case, just the incident that precipitated it. I also wish to clarify that I do not own a Skoda or have any vested interests in this whole issue. I came across this criticism and felt that it should be made known to everybody, but it looks like Skoda likes only boquets, not brickbats. The accompanying photograph is NOT part of the case; this is. The red car was photographed near Chennai which is far removed from where the present case is running. It is also relevant to the content of that section. Would Skoda India like me to replace it with a photograph of the car that was wrecked when Nummer Eins installed a defective brake rotor in it?

Vilma trade edit

Ian—

The fact that the Saints owed the Jets a third-round pick is based on the fact that Vilma did not sign a contract extension before the end of the 2008 season. Had he done so, they would have owed a second-round pick. In the grand scheme of things, other editors have already gone back and forth on this, and the consensus appears to be that it is an unhelpful detail in the 2009 NFL Draft article. Vandalismo? edit

Grouped references edit

Ian—you suggested that it could be modified in several ways relative to the way you first had it. Until I see that, I can't really say for sure. Would it be possible to take, say, two or three rounds from the table, and two or three trades, and do a "mock-up" on your user page? Samer (talk) 03:45, 25 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I really wish you had waited, primarily because I don't think it's obvious enough how it works that the average user will get it right, and there will be THOUSANDS of edits this weekend.
That said, I figure since it does, in general, look like an improvement (although I'd fix some things, such as the unneeded carriage returns), I'll leave it as is, but change that section to "Pre-Draft Trades." That way, people can add the in-draft trades in a style similar to the previous one, and then the whole thing can be fixed by people who understand the nested reference system. Wikipedia should encourage editors to have some command of the language they are editing in edit

Hi Ian, I think you may be able to reflect on the following comment:
I’ve noticed that the editor 190.208.86.19 is constantly editing pages in English Wikipedia but he doesn’t seem to have even a basic command of the English language. He uses logical deduction in making basic statements, in pasting, changing statistics etc. I’ll give you an example from the page that I started on 4 April 2009: Croatian Chilean: (this is an example he/she seems to be doing this to a number of similar pages)

1. He/she first altered the introduction from "Croatian Chilean are an important" to "Croatian Chilean are a important" etc. which I changed and ultimately rewrote completely.
2. He/she then proceeded to add duplicate entries of people to the Notable Chilean Croats (he obviously didn’t even read them).
3. He/she then pasted sentences from the Punta Arenas, Chile page with altered syntax into the paragraph with the heading: "Punta Arenas City “Croatian” pacific" which was rectified by 71.102.2.206. into the more readable "Punta Arenas, City of the "Croatian" Pacific." I fixed the ruined syntax of part of the paragraph that he pasted and broke up.
4. I rewrote the introduction again and mentioned the Croatian diaspora, he/she probably clicked on this and decided to start to work on the Croatian diaspora page. The original page had links to the corresponding countries constituting the diaspora but he/she pasted the duplicate material on the page. In the process of pasting he/she changed the statistics from the Croatian Chilean page from 500,000 to 700,000, he even placed a reference for it !

In the past this editor has edited my contribution and left them with grammatical errors and ruined the syntax.

I started in good faith, I initially wanted to translate the content on the Spanish page Inmigración croata en Chile into the English one but what for if it is going to be ruined or carelessly pasted somewhere else.

190.208.86.19 knows his html and can format, paste, add references html etc…but he doesn’t understand the language of the page itself.

Is there a Wikipedia policy that encourages a person to at least have a basic understanding of English grammar to edit English wikipedia. To edit pages in English Wikipedia without any basic command of English, in my judgement, is vandalism.

Vandalism in German Argentine edit

Please, take a look. German Argentine has been vandalized by Chilean IP 190.208.86.19 for a week. He has been vandalizing German Argentine article, German Peruvian and other ones about Peru, while exagerates German Chileans without source (he leaves the source that clearly says there are at most 150,000 German Chileans, but he changes the number). In the case of Argentina, he has been re-editing old sources all the week. He received the last warning (23 April 2009) but he continues even worse. He doesn't know English and edits in a wrong way. He also lied to you about what the sources says in Spanish, because I know Spanish and that is false. Americanlurker (talk) 00:54, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
