Woden and Balday

First, how reliable is the lineage of these kings in general? I am assuming that they are "established legend", neither entirely historical nor entirely mythical. Second, are their names the same as the names of the gods? Is this a case of the mapping of divinity onto historical figures, or simple naming of people for gods, or what? Robert McClenon (talk) 02:16, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I have seen these kings listed on a few sources. I have read several pages before adding these kings. The linage intersects with the Bernician royalty at Brand. The names that are listed on the pages are correct. Since the people from back then were of Germanic descent, some of the people were probably named after their deities as a form of respect and honor. --Figfires (talk) 02:29, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

  • Figfires, it might be a good idea to read List of Anglo-Saxon monarchs and kingdoms. There wasn't a "King of the Anglo-Saxons" in the times you are writing about. There were a number of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms with their own kings. Peter in Australia aka --Shirt58 (talk) 03:19, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
User:Shirt58 - No, but often there is a pseudo-history constructed after the fact, that is documented in sources that were considered reliable in earlier literate times and therefore were treated by earlier historians as fact. For example, see List of High Kings of Ireland, which goes back more than a thousand years BC, and is documented by two written sources that were previously considered to be historical, with the ancestry of the Milesian high kings going back from Ireland to Spain and from there back to Japheth. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:29, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Okay... It looks like this has to do with the west anglo-saxons before the establishment of Wessex as a kingdom... I will correct it to say "West" in the title. Thanks. --Figfires (talk) 03:24, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

No, not OK. These names were 'ancestor figures' not monarchs. Was Adam or Woden a "King of the Anglo-Saxons"? No, obviously not, though the two names are found in many if not all of the Anglo-Saxon dynastic family trees. We know that Cerdic was the first king of the Gewissae, because the A-S chronicle says so - he "began to reign" and before he began to reign he was described as an earldorman, not a king. Also there is considerable doubt as to whether Cerdic was a Germanic migrant, given that his name was British he was most probably British.
@Figfires and Robert McClenon: Figfires, thank you for your contribution to the discussion here--Shirt58 (talk) 09:36, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Sansotta's Italian

Hello Figfires,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Sansotta's Italian for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly say why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Margaret Sullavan's Death

The section titled "Death" states "No note was found to indicate suicide, and no conclusion was reached as to whether her death was the result of a deliberate or an accidental overdose of barbiturates.[39] The county coroner officially ruled Sullavan's death an accidental overdose." How do you justify reverting my edit so that the article now reads "Both Bridget and Bill would follow in their mother's footsteps and commit suicide"? That's an unsupported assertion, in my opinion. Please clarify your reasoning. Thanks. 24.23.135.19 (talk) 23:32, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

DACA

The subject of "undocumented" vs "illegal" was debated over a year ago on the DACA talk page and the last consensus was for "illegal". Until you can get a new consensus, I would kindly ask you to undo your revert. 170.178.156.24 (talk) 19:01, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

The main issue I had was with the word "alien" because it shows bias against those students. FigfiresSend me a message! 19:09, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
While I disagree, in that the word alien indicates that they are not citizens, would you accept the phrase "illegal immigrant" as a compromise position? 170.178.156.24 (talk) 19:20, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
No, I can't accept. It must be changed via consensus by the community. I have started a discussion on the article's talk page. The issue I have is it is a possible violation of Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view. Synonyms to alien include: unfamiliar, unknown, strange, and peculiar. All of those include unnecessary bias. FigfiresSend me a message! 19:25, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
I understand we need consensus, I was just wanting to more fully understand your position before going to the DACA talk page, as in the past, some of the DACA talk page discussions have become down right hostile. I will complement you on showing much more "good faith" and "civility" then with some I have encountered, and for that I most heartily compliment and thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 170.178.156.24 (talk) 19:30, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Anarchist Schools of thought

On the anarchist schools of thought page under anarcho capitalism the description is blatantly biased against the ideology going as far as to compare it so slavery. I attempted to write more neutral description of it to make it in line with the neutral point of view policy of wikipedia "This page in a nutshell: Articles must not take sides, but should explain the sides, fairly and without editorial bias. This applies to both what you say and how you say it." (Taken from "Wikipedia:Neutral point of view") however it was recently returned to the biased description. I would ask of you to undo the change or use the description used on the Anarcho Capitalism page "Anarcho-capitalism is a political philosophy and school of anarchist thought that advocates the elimination of centralized state dictum in favor of self-ownership, private property and free markets. Anarcho-capitalists hold that in the absence of statute (law by arbitrary autocratic decrees, or bureaucratic legislation swayed by transitory political special interest groups), society tends to contractually self-regulate and civilize through the spontaneous and organic discipline of the free market (in what its proponents describe as a "voluntary society").[1][2]"

Thank you Chumley84 (talk) 19:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Chumley84, I get that this might be biased, but you just can't remove a lot of content from the page without discussion on it. Let's do this the right way. I am adding a template to the top of the page for discussion on the neutrality. Please start a discussion on the talk page of the article and get consensus before proceeding. Tropical Cyclones in 2010

Yeah what I meant by including every system was that there is not really a need to mention a 6 hourly tropical depression in the overall article. I would also argue that some of the fish systems maybe worth including in it if they are significant or have impacted the weather paterns. Keep up the good work :)Jason Rees (talk) 13:25, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

@Jason Rees: I removed a few of the non-notable systems. April didn't have anything note worthy. May and June had several storms of significance. FigfiresSend me a message! 13:28, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Re: Harvey

First off, thanks for reaching out to me in a curious and civil manner. Productivity here has slacked some in recent years so it's great to see some fresh blood. To be quite frank, WPTC doesn't really use B class much. This project was founded in 2005 and within a year, a solid group of editors (and this was before B class was a thing) had emerged that typically shipped articles WP:GAN and WP:FAC with at the time large success without much effort. B class was first introduced in 2008, the year I started editing, and since most prominent editors here get most of their articles to GA without much work, newly created content often goes right from C to GAN. Thus, in most cases, I don't think B class serves too much of a purpose here, though Harvey, due to its importance, is arguably an exception. As for Harvey itself, good call on making it fail on B2, though worth noting that if you ask me, certain sections (especially the sports one) being bloated is also a structural problem. Honestly if you want to improve hurricane articles, I suggest with something relatively easier, ie less important than Harvey. For reference, we keep tables of all our articles and their respective ratings here. Let me know if you have any questions! YE Pacific Hurricane 00:34, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

Re

IMO the MH length similar to Hurricane Genevieve (2014) or Typhoon Noru (2017). As Hector is forcasted to move into the Western Pacific, subheadings may be needed once the MH has expanded. --B dash (talk) 02:09, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Hector

Its always hard to judge if a fish storm that prompts watches/warnings like Hector needs an article and as things stand I don't think Hector is worthy. Anyway, there is no need to mention every single category change as it just ruins the flow of the article and causes the MH to become bloated, especially within regions where there are two scales in operation. So for example:

At the same time, Hector took a turn to the west-northwest after having travelled due west for several days straight.[30] On August 11, Hector began another weakening trend as increasing wind shear began to have an impact on the system.[31] At around this time, the hurricane set the record for the longest consecutive duration as a major hurricane in the East and Central Pacific.[32] On August 11, at 09:00 UTC, Hector weakened back into a category 3 hurricane.[33] At 21:00 UTC, on the same day, Hector weakened into a category 2 hurricane due to increasing wind shear as it took a turn to the northwest.[34] Hector quickly weakened to category 1 status on August 12 due to south-southwesterly shear of 35 mph (55 km/h).

Could be better written as:

During August 11, wind shear over the system increased, which resulted in Hector weakening into a Category 2 hurricane. During the following day, Hector continued to weaken and became a Category 1 hurricane as it approached the International Dateline.

I also wonder if the reader really needs to know that

On July 26, the National Hurricane Center indicated that an area of low pressure was forecast to form a couple hundred miles south-southwest of Mexico early next week.

Let me know what you think and ill have another look through later.Jason Rees (talk) 13:38, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

BTW it is incorrect to say that the CPHC/NWS Honolulu only started to monitor Hector when it moved into their AOR, since they were monitoring it in their TWO's ahead of the system crossing 140W.Jason Rees (talk) 16:13, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Im afraid I consider those records to be trivial but i not going to push for Hector to be merged at this stage. I would also mention that it came close to being considered a Category 5 and as i suggested above remove the two category changes on one day thing.Jason Rees (talk) 16:45, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Wow im surprised that you went and launched an AFD on the basis of my comments. Your reasons for making the article were sound, but we have to remember that systems do not warrant articles just because warnings for x island are issued.Jason Rees (talk) 18:14, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
At the end of the day you asked me for my opinion which i was happy to provide, but what you and others have to remember is that I am only one person and not the leader of the project or anything like that.Jason Rees (talk) 19:53, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Re: Hector record

Back years ago, I would say you couldn't mention it. With the rise of weather twitter, you could probably ask a verified twitter (that have a checkmark by their name) user (most likely Phil Klotzbach) to confirm such record, as that would prove to be a reliable source, and we could cite that. But don't mention it unless we have a verified source YE Pacific Hurricane 06:26, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

HURDAT doesn't explicitly say Jimena spent the most amount of time at Cat 4, so I added a fact tag to that part. YE Pacific Hurricane 04:37, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
@Yellow Evan: I wasn't the one who added that, but thanks for doing that. Someone else came in and massively changed that entire section earlier. FigfiresSend me a message! 04:41, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Hector is decoupled right now so yeah it'll be around 40-45 knots if and when it crosses over. I'd go as far as saying there's some chance it dissipates before making it over. If and when it crosses of, the JMA will issue warnings on it as Hector regardless of intensity. Systems are not renamed when they change basins. YE Pacific Hurricane 21:18, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Re:Hector ACE

I believe that all of the ACE calcs for the East Pacific storms are on [1], although Hector's ACE calculations are out-of-date. The rest of the information should be available at the advisories archive. LightandDark2000 (talk) 02:57, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

@LightandDark2000: I have the East, I just need the west. Also, would you be willing to do a review of Hector for class placement? FigfiresSend me a message! 02:59, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
I don't know exactly where to get the ACE data for the West Pacific. The data there is more difficult to come by - you should probably ask another user who has more experience in obtaining that data. As for reviewing the article, I'm willing to do a review. LightandDark2000 (talk) 03:02, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
@LightandDark2000: What areas should be improved in order to meet B-class? FigfiresSend me a message! 03:17, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
The meteorological section needs to be expanded and also updated with information from the latest advisories. The ACEs need to be tallied up and added to the article, after someone finds them of course. It's close to a B-Class article in my opinion - it just needs a little more work.

@LightandDark2000: Got the data for the ACE in west pacific. I had to use the logs for the wikipedia pages to get the updates, but it is correct. By the way, there aren't any advisories to add to the meteorological section. The JMA and JTWC dont keep a record like the NHC and CPHC do. FigfiresSend me a message! 03:43, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

WPAC

BTW the expectation for anything to be B class is that the MH is fully complete and cited back to the advisories. Outside of the NHC AOR this means using the advisories that are webcited and added to the talk pages of the season until better sources become available. For the WPAC this means using the prognosting reasonings by the JTWC for the Met History and advisories for the JMA. Since Hectors history in the WPAC is lacking these, I had no choice but to downgrade to C class.Jason Rees (talk) 07:41, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Re:AccuWeather

I used the lower-end of AccuWeather's estimates, which ranged from $10-$20 billion. For Hurricane Harvey, their estimates came very close to a Ball State University estimate of $198 billion, and they did nail Hurricane Maria's damage just about right. I did specify that it was an estimate, but since no other calculations have been released yet, and given Lane's likely record damage, I thought that an estimate should be included somewhere until the official reports are issued. LightandDark2000 (talk) 22:30, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

@LightandDark2000: The cited article says nothing about 20 billion. It simply says in excess of 10 billion. FigfiresSend me a message! 22:39, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
There was another LinkedIn article that gave the upper range of $20 billion. I could cite that report as well (but if I do, I would probably have to mention the $20 billion figure). LightandDark2000 (talk) 22:41, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

I've been around for 13 years in the project, so I can provide resources. I'm one of many members of the tropical cyclone WikiProject, where you can find information about 2000 other tropical cyclone articles, including nearly 1,000 articles in the Atlantic basin. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:15, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

@Hurricanehink: I joined WPTC last year. I mainly made smaller contributions last year since I was new. So far this year, I have drafted and made major contributions to Hurricane Hector (2018), Hurricane Lane (2018), and Hurricane Olivia (2018) (soon to be published). I wanted to create a new task force for improving older, low quality articles that were forgotten about, but was met with significant opposition so I revoked the request. Main thing I see that needs done is improving stubs and starts as possible. FigfiresSend me a message! 19:36, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Might you be talking about the Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Pacific hurricane task force? User:Yellow Evan does a lot of work on Pacific hurricane and typhoon articles. He knows a lot of sources for the areas that occasionally get hit by these beasts of nature. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:58, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
No, I wanted to create something entirely new that simply focused on improving stubs and starts that have been forgotten. YE doesnt think we should even have task forces since they haven't had much success in the past. Tbh it seems to be more a problem of promotion than them not being necessary. Re:Olivia

Do you know where information can be found regarding RLs/disturbances in WPAC for JMA? ATCF has continued posting information for Olivia over the last several days and it appears the system will be crossing over into WPAC soon. FigfiresSend me a message! 01:16, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

I have two links on my userpage that you might be interested in: the JMA main page and the JMA Marine Bulletins. However, right now, I don't know how to locate more specific advisories for specific storms. If you want more detailed advisories/tracking data, you should ask Meow or Jason Rees, since I'm sure that they have more experience in pulling advisories for storms in the WPac basin. 🌀 LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:19, 18 September 2018 (UTC)

@LightandDark2000: Okay, thanks. I will have to ask them about that. The track for Olivia is honestly impressive. Most remnant lows don't survive this long in CPAC due to the shear, but Olivia has managed to do so for four days. FigfiresSend me a message! 01:22, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
@LightandDark2000: I have reversed your edit on Olivia's article because the remnants are clearly still active. They are currently located in CPAC. ATCF updated 17E (Olivia) at 20:00 UTC today so I would wait. Current picture of the remnants may be found here. FigfiresSend me a message! 00:38, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
@Figfires: Olivia is now mentioned as a non-tropical low by JMA. It will not have its own section in the typhoon season article once crossing the International Date Line unless it re-intensifies later. However, I will start update the track map of Olivia soon after it enters the responsible area of RSMC Tokyo.-- 🐱💬 02:51, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
@Meow: According to JTWC, it is at 179.9 E now which would put in JMA's responsibility. As for the article, I need to revert myself as the remnants are still active. FigfiresSend me a message! 02:58, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
@Figfires: But according to the newer track data, Olivia dissipated east of the International Date Line.👻-- 🐱💬 13:28, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

Re: Tropical cyclones in 2018

Hey there, good luck with keeping the article up to date, but good work so far! The biggest thing you gotta do is link every individual storm, which could be a long term project, but it would be immensely helpful for this sort of article. For storms named by PAGASA in the WPAC, perhaps include them in parenthesis? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:25, 22 September 2018 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you so much for helping me out with such an awkward situation, you were really helpful. :) CycloneYoris (talk) 10:56, 2 October 2018 (UTC)

Re: 2018 European windstorm season

You made a few mistakes in editing this article: Do not use {clear} for any sections of the article except the bottom of the article - failure to do this results in deletion and misplacement of the section. Do not add content that is unreasonable or untrue. Do not try to edit the infoboxes - that results in misplacement and/or breaking of the infobox.

Thank you for reading! - RecentEdits

@RecentEdits: you have no idea what you are talking about. Leslie impacted an island near Portugal with 85 mph winds and is making landfall in main land Portugal now. As for the clear, it is properly placed. This is to ensure the infobox does not go into the next section. FigfiresSend me a message! 23:03, 13 October 2018 (UTC)

Figfires -- are you okay with RecentEdits touting your signature? Hdjensofjfnen (If you want to trout me, go ahead!) 19:05, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
@Hdjensofjfnen: He was asked a week ago to change it by Bdash and hasn't even acknowledged it. At this point, it should probably be brought to the attention of an admin as it is confusing to have two very similar looking signatures. FigfiresSend me a message! 20:56, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
@Figfires: What would even be the noticeboard for this stuff? WP:ANI? (P.S. I changed my signature.) Hdjensofjfnen (♪ Oh, can I get a connection? Alternatively, trout me.) 21:03, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

@Hdjensofjfnen: I would just report it on an admin's talk page. All the notice boards are for urgent matters that require blocking. FigfiresSend me a message! 21:05, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Brought it to the attention of the same admin (B dash), now waiting on a response. Thanks! Hdjensofjfnen (♪ Oh, can I get a connection? Alternatively, trout me.) 21:11, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
@Hdjensofjfnen: B dash is not an admin. He just put the notice on his profile because Recent Edits copied my sig and caused some confusion. FigfiresSend me a message! 21:17, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

Do not omit terms in ACE calculations

  Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something silly.

The best track is almost identical to the sequence of operational warnings. Therefore you should've noticed that having a 3-point difference was a sign that you had omitted terms. In this case, you omitted the 80- and 85-knot terms in the sum, a difference of 2.8075 units. Please be more careful in the future.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:07, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Winds

The rolling best track shows the intensities they will put in their warnings well before the warnings, and this is what TT also uses. Consensus has long been that this is okay to use for intensity updates in basins other than the (central and) eastern Pacific and Atlantic. Considering that the warning intensities are as of the synoptic time, there is no harm in doing this.--Jasper Deng (talk) 06:47, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for going through the typhoon articles and adding the categories to the talk page! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:44, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Hurricanehink: You are most certainly welcome. The articles needed to be organized. To be honest, I never thought I would see the end of the typhoon articles. I think in total we have nearly 500. NoahTalk 16:24, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
By my count, we have 460! So it's a huge effort to orgainze them all. Thankfully, none of the other basins are nearly as big. The SPAC is the next biggest with 129 articles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:26, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
@Hurricanehink: Well... SHEM is grouped together. NoahTalk 16:28, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
We've been trending away from the SHEM being grouped together. All SHEM storms used to be part of the same season article, until they started being split by their basins. I think for categorization purposes, they should be split as well. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:40, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

@Hurricanehink: People I talked to wanted a SHEM task force to handle it all since there aren't many editors. That's why we have SHEM combined. I will not do the SHEM ones for now, but feel free to bring it up again for discussion if you want. I completed the NIO articles earlier and will be doing the Anomalous articles now. Also, I didn't know if you were aware, but we have a backlog of GANs. If you know of anyone who would be interested in reviewing them, I would appreciate it. NoahTalk 22:41, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

If you think we have a backlog now, you haven't seen a backlog. We've had 10+ in the past in our heyday. YE Pacific Hurricane 08:13, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
We need to find a better way engaging editors. Having the task forces help organize project resources. I've learned that data is good, and it would be helpful to know how much we have left. We kinda know the answer to that. I'll figure that out over the next few days. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:59, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
