CortotEdit

Thank you for your editing of this - much better. I included the Youtube reference because it is such an astonishing historical document - it is the very concert broadcast in January 1944 on Radio Paris. I have read somewhere that the sound files from Radio Paris came to light fairly recently. But of course Wikipedia is intended to be based on secondary sources ! Gwedi elwch (talk) 01:52, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

@Gwedi elwch: No problem. The recording is interesting but not admissible in this case, yes. It possibly could be included as an external link but I am not sure if it meets the criteria. I doubt Radio Paris will be filing a copyright complaint, however. Hrodvarsson (talk) 02:00, 14 January 2018 (UTC)

"Barite"Edit

This name is, obviously (https://www.mindat.org/min-549.html) wrong, and the correct one is barYte - and this is a reason of the changes I did. Please do not change it again.Eudialytos (talk) 21:03, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@Eudialytos: Barite is the American English spelling. The article is written in American English (see "magnetized" and other American English spellings), so barite is used. Hrodvarsson (talk) 21:11, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
The only instance deciding in this case is The Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). If you go to http://nrmima.nrm.se/, you will see the list of minerals, where the species is given as baryte. Thus, the only correct name for the natural compound is baryte. Please reverse the re-re-delete.Eudialytos (talk) 21:36, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
@Eudialytos: I opened a discussion at Talk:Barium, comment there as it'll have a broader audience than my talk page. Hrodvarsson (talk) 21:39, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

HypatiaEdit

Hello! Remember that conversation we had about a month ago in which you stated that you would "consider" reviewing the article Hypatia if I nominated it for GA? Well, I just nominated it and I was wondering if you were still willing to review it. There is an overwhelming shortage of editors who are actively reviewing articles and all of the other "Mathematics and mathematicians" nominations have been languishing untouched since last summer. I know you said you have never reviewed an article for GA before, but it really is not that hard. You just have to remember the criteria and review the article accordingly. If you need further guidance, there is a set of useful instructions for how to do it right here. --Katolophyromai (talk) 02:09, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

@Katolophyromai: Hello. Yes, I remember that. I'll try to start the review soon. The article looks to be in good shape as is but I will look through it thoroughly at some point in the next week. I also noticed quite a paucity of editors in this area; my peer review of Magnus Carlsen received zero responses apart from a couple comments about issues which a bot had flagged, and this is one of the two or three most high-profile chess biographies. Hrodvarsson (talk) 02:31, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your willingness to help. I do not mean to be a burden, but, if you are looking for another article to review after you finish Hypatia, I thought I would also inform you that I nominated the article Pythagoras back in November 2017 and it is still awaiting review also. (I nominated that one in the "Philosophy and religion" category rather than the "Mathematics and mathematicians" category, for reasons that become obvious once one reads the article.) --Katolophyromai (talk) 02:59, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@Katolophyromai: I'll try to review Pythagoras too. I also nominated Matthias Blübaum for GA in November 2017 and it has not been reviewed yet. I do not know if you have an interest in chess but it would be great if you could review it. (There is not much to be reviewed as the subject is a 20-year-old chess player, but I cannot see much else to improve the article from its current state apart from regular updates.) Hrodvarsson (talk) 03:20, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I would be more than happy to review Matthias Blübaum for you. I will start on that right away! Thank you so much for agreeing to help! --Katolophyromai (talk) 04:00, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

PythagorasEdit

Hello! I do not mean to be impatient or anything, but I was wondering when you were planning on starting your review of Pythagoras? I know it has only been four days since you finished Hypatia and I understand that you may want to take a break before moving on, but I was just curious how soon you were thinking about getting started. --Katolophyromai (talk) 03:01, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

@Katolophyromai: Hi. Yes, I'll try to start that within the next day or two, I have been busy the past few days. Thank you for finishing the review of Matthias Blübaum by the way, I was offline at the time you finished it. Hrodvarsson (talk) 10:22, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Reliable sourcesEdit

Hello. Are chess.com and sources from other prominent chess websites considered to be reliable? If not, where should I look for them? -elloffen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elloffen (talkcontribs) 04:37, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

@Elloffen: Chess.com is a reliable source, if it's a chess.com article and not a post on the site's forum. Reliable sources are determined at the WP:RSN, I imagine most sources you could find would be reliable. Just look for sources that discuss Carlsen's rapid and blitz achievements and we can determine if they are reliable or not. By the way, you should sign your comments with four tildes (~) when editing talk pages such as this one and Talk:Magnus Carlsen. Hrodvarsson (talk) 10:51, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Stefán KristjánssonEdit

On 5 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stefán Kristjánsson, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Stefán Kristjánsson), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Numerical order of footnotes (Cleopatra)Edit

Hello again! I responded to your post in the FAC page for Cleopatra. I discovered that Wiki policy and guidelines, per Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Text–source_integrity, actually encourages us to keep citations and footnotes as they are, if that is the best way to preserve text-source integrity. In most cases of my article, the very first citation is the most important, because that is where the original idea came from, and other citations tacked on afterwards serve as ancillaries in a supporting fashion. My edit on Hafþór Júlíus BjörnssonEdit

Hi,

Can you please explain which sources were primary sources in my edit on the personal section of Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson? I am new here and this was only my second edit.

From what I read about original research and primary sourcing just now it would seem to me that an account of Steimann directly narrating her tale to the newspaper amounts of primary source but a reportage of the interview is not as it is a secondary source. And the same should go for other references which report the incidents against Hafthor, I believe?

Please correct me if I am wrong. Also please show me more examples of primary sources from my edit so I can avoid these in future?

My only other experience of editing on Wikipedia comprised of being told while editing itself that a certain website is blacklisted for being unreliable. I received no such info here so how can I verify the reliability?

Also does reporting something directly from the living person's website or social media amount to primary source or original research?

Thanks in advance.

UditaCh (talk) 06:20, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

@UditaCh: Hello. I should have left a notification that I reverted your edits and gave a more detailed explanation on your talk page, my apologies, though I think the explanation in the edit summary is adequate.
You added numerous references to Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, which can be used in some cases (see WP:SOCIALMEDIA) but were not applicable in this case. You also added references to non-primary sources and some of the additions were fine, such as the information that Hafþór has a daughter. Ideally, I would have salvaged the usable sources and information but in the case of biographies of living persons it is policy to remove the questionable content first, and afterwards resolve the problems with the content, rather than allowing questionable content to remain while it is discussed. In the future, it may be best to create a draft for additions such as these in your sandbox (yours is located at User:UditaCh/sandbox) then discuss the proposed additions on the talk page. More generally, allegations of a living person committing criminal acts are usually left out of the living person's article, unless there is an exceptional level of reporting of the allegations or a conviction. Hrodvarsson (talk) 22:26, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Hi Thanks for explaining. I will then make a draft in my sandbox and may be let someone have a look first? You if you're interested? I want to mention the charges since they have been extensively reported but I could leave out the details which are disputed keeping in mind this is a living person - so just reporting that charges of domestic violence were made (without details) and one of them was dropped and Bjornsson denied them. Just two lines then - would you prefer if I make a draft and show you? This is my first major edit. Thanks. UditaCh (talk) 09:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
@UditaCh: If you make a draft in your sandbox, I will review it for you. You could also link to your sandbox on the talk page to possibly gain the attention of others. I have created a discussion on the talk page about this, see here. If this is your first major edit, welcome to Wikipedia. We have to be very careful about biographies of living persons so you should consider discussing any edit to a BLP that may be contentious on the talk page beforehand.
By the way, you should indent your comments on talk pages so as to make reading the discussion easier, for an explanation see WP:INDENT. I have indented your reply for you. Regards, Hrodvarsson (talk) 23:22, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

The Royal Game of UrEdit

Hello! I noticed you seem to have an interest in board games. I was wondering if you might be interesting in reviewing the article Royal Game of Ur, which I have recently nominated for "Good Article" status. The article is about what is probably the oldest known board game for which the rules can be accurately reconstructed. You do not necessarily have to review it if you do not want to, but I just thought I would let you know about it in case you were interested. --Katolophyromai (talk) 18:13, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Katolophyromai: I don't have a serious interest in board games other than chess and some of its variants, but I can review that article for you. I will do so sometime in the next week. Hrodvarsson (talk) 22:09, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
That sounds excellent. I apologize if I overgeneralized; I saw how you wrote so much about chess players and assumed a more general interest in board games. I guess I was wrong. Thank you so much for your willingness to help, though!--Katolophyromai (talk) 01:09, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
@Katolophyromai: I probably have a greater general interest in board games than the next man, though this is not saying a lot. I have very little interest in playing strategic games that involve dice or other instruments of chance as the wins are not particularly satisfying and there often is little to be learned from the losses, but the histories of these games are usually interesting. @Meters: Good decision. I will reinstate your hat if it is challenged. Regarding the IP, I doubt it is the user account. I am 99% sure it is QuackDoctor returning to troll/disrupt again. File:Eavonwillebrand.pngEdit

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:06, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

Birds of Prey ArticleEdit

Hello Hrodvarsson, I recently (August 30, 2018) made edits to the Bird of Prey article, and I wanted to follow up on the messages I received from you.

The first message requested justifications for the edits. I apologize that I did not include those and that I tried to make further (disruptive) edits afterward; I'm new to editing etiquette and didn't mean to be annoying. The reason I made the follow-up edits was that I hadn't seen your first message after I saved my initial edits, and when I refreshed the page it looked like my edits hadn't been saved; so I tried to change it again without realizing that my edits had been archived. My mistake.

My primary reason for changing the main section of the page was that the unedited wording (pasted in parenthetical quotes, hereafter) gave a potentially ambiguous definition of the term. In particular, even though the entire article is clearly about raptors, the opening sentence ("A bird of prey, predatory bird, or raptor is any of several species of bird that hunts and feeds on rodents and other animals") was vague. That wording almost opens the door to birds of prey (even raptors!) including any kind of bird that eats animals--which could include all kinds of insectivorous songbirds as well as a multitude of other animal-eating birds species. Although the unedited text did subsequently state that the term could be taken to have a very broad definition ("Taken literally, the term bird of prey has a wide meaning that includes many birds that hunt and feed on animals and also birds that eat very small insects."), I felt that wording didn't make it 100% clear that this article was not based on that broad definition. When I edited the article, I attempted to clarify these issues by leading clearly with the ornithological definition and then acknowledging the possible broader definition in the second paragraph.

Along the way, I changed some other components of organization and wording that I felt were not ideal. These should not have changed any meaning.

Thanks for bearing with me!

Cheers!

P.S. Here is the text of my intended replacement for the two paragraphs that come below the page TOC. Note, I did make a few additional changes to the text below since I tried to make edits to the Wikipedia page.

Birds of prey, or raptors, include species of bird that primarily hunt and feed on vertebrates that are large relative to the hunter. Additionally, they have keen eyesight for detecting food at a distance or during flight, strong feet equipped with talons for grasping or killing prey, and powerful, curved beaks for tearing flesh.[1][2][3] The term raptor is derived from the Latin word rapere, meaning to seize or take by force.[4] In addition to hunting live prey, most also eat carrion, at least occasionally, and vultures and condors eat carrion as their main food source.[1]

Although the term bird of prey could theoretically be taken to include all birds that primarily consume animals,[3] ornithologists typically use the narrower definition followed in this page. Examples of animal-eating birds not encompassed by the ornithological definition include storks, herons, gulls, skuas, penguins, kookaburras, and shrikes, as well as the many songbirds that are primarily insectivorous. 128.174.176.75 (talk) 01:45, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Hrodvarsson. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). The birthplace of Parham is incorrect. He was born in Gorgan. Not sure you don’t like the reality. BhraamPeter (talk) 02:43, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

@BhraamPeter: I have no preference either way. Provide a reliable source that states Maghsoodloo was born in Gorgan and I will happily go along with the change. If this is the reality, it should not be difficult to find a reliable source. Otherwise do not change the birthplace. Hrodvarsson (talk) 23:27, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Hans Christian ØrstedEdit

Hello Hrodvarsson. Sorry for the inconvenience but I'm new around here and I don't know how you guys do the research part but Ørsted did the trip through Europe in 1801 with the travel scholarship "In 1801 Ørsted received a travel scholarship and public grant which enabled him to spend three years travelling across Europe". There are also records of the trip he did in the University of Copenhagen official website:"1801 tog H.C. Ørsted afsted på en tre år lang uddannelsesrejse til videnskabens hovedsæder i Europa, blandt andet Berlin og Paris. Meningen var, at han skulle komme hjem med ny viden om, hvordan man kunne bruge naturvidenskaben til nyttige, praktiske formål." (1801 took H.C. Ørsted went on a three-year education trip to science headquarters in Europe, including Berlin and Paris. The idea was that he should come home with new knowledge about how to use natural science for useful practical purposes.) It would be better to review the years and see if it was in 1800/1803 or 1801/1804. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.133.188.138 (talk) 12:50, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello. I did not revert your edit. That was another editor, Attic Salt. I left the message on your page as a courtesy as Attic Salt had not given an explanation for his reversion. As the 1800 and 1803 dates were not sourced, I amended it, using the reference you provided. I have also made other edits to the article, hopefully improving the quality. Feel free to look it over again and edit it yourself. Hrodvarsson (talk) 22:41, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Press coverage 2018Edit

That was the funniest story I've seen there in quite awhile. Of course, you adding it there could be seen as WP:PROMOTION ;-) Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:21, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: It is a very bizarre story. And that's true, roughly a quarter of the article consists of my comments. I hope it can be forgiven, it's not often that an afd you create is reported on, lol. Thanks for correcting the link by the way. Hrodvarsson (talk) 23:39, 14 November 2018 (UTC)
This guy [1] did one revert and got mentioned in the Washington Post. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:54, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Wow, I need to start editing more American politics articles. It'd be nice to add "Featured in The Washington Post" to my CV. Hrodvarsson (talk) 23:53, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Lucas van ForeestEdit

On 16 November 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Lucas van Foreest, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 17-year-old Dutch chess grandmaster Lucas van Foreest has a brother, great-great grandfather, and great-great granduncle who have all been Dutch Chess Champions? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Lucas van Foreest. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Lucas van Foreest), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Jaxon Rose MooreEdit

The originator of Jaxon Rose Moore (whom I suspect is her mother) move the article to mainspace again. Two of the refs are IMBd and the third is a name-mention. I've had difficulties with AfD, but this article is definitely a candidate for not being an article. Would you please do the honors? David notMD (talk) 11:27, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

@David notMD: I have nominated it, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jaxon Rose Moore. By "difficulties" do you mean that you are topic banned from deletion discussions, or are you just not a fan of the process? With Twinkle it is very simple to start afds, and the worst that can happen is that the article is kept. Hrodvarsson (talk) 01:26, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
By difficulties I mean that I do not have Twinkle, and the last time I tried to initiate an AfD I messed up the process. David notMD (talk) 01:27, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
@David notMD: Fair enough. You should consider enabling Twinkle though, it is very useful. Hrodvarsson (talk) 01:34, 18 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter messageEdit

Hello, Hrodvarsson. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
