Rugby Union Starting Lineups

Hello, Hamedog. I'm quite new to this, but I was just wondering how one would go about editing Image:Rugby Union blank line ups.PNG for various teams. I tried saving the '.png' file to my desktop, and simply editing it with The Gimp, but I had no idea what text to use, and I was wondering if this was even the right way to do it. I noticed the Soccer Line-Up images were in the '.svg' format, which allows people to simply edit the text and colours in a program like Inkscape, but I'm not sure this is possible with PNG files. Basically, I use Paint, as I have no other program. In paint in use the fill option to colour all the white shirts. Then I delete the position names, writing in the new ones. Posting spurious system messages

Please do not post spurious system messages (that is, messages which falsely purport to be generated by the Wikimedia software). They are distracting and therefore obstruct the use of Wikipedia for its intended purpose. Please refer to the following Wikipedia policies and guidelines:

Psychonaut, kindly stop harassing users. Fake system messages are 100% within policy, in poor taste true... but last I checked poor taste was not against policy. I must point out that your interpretation of the role of administrators versus ordinary users is incorrect. All users, not just administrators, are allowed and even expected to advise on and enforce Wikipedia policies. See, for example, Wikipedia:Administrators, which states,

In the very early days of Wikipedia, all users functioned as administrators, and in principle they still should. Any user can behave in a way befitting an administrator (provided they do not falsely claim to be one), even if they have not been given the extra administrative functions.

It is within all editors' rights to remove false system messages and other objectionable content, and doing so twice (with a more elaborate explanation each time) is hardly enough to be considered harassment. If you are an administrator, as your posting implies, then it appears you need to read up on Wikipedia policy and cease issuing these false warnings. —Psychonaut 12:39, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

North Korea vs. DPRK

Please do not systematically change North Korea to DPRK. The current naming convention is the result of a consensus among many editors. If you think it should be different, please take it up on Talk:North Korea rather than simply changing articles against the consensus. Also, I suggest you read Wikipedia:Naming_conflict#Rationale - have a look at the table. I my understanding it would look like this if we used it for the DPRK:

Fantastic job with that page! My computer has been down this week, but was fixed yesterday, and I was just about to start on the 2007 seaon, but I see its done! Excellant :). And yeah, pre-season games are needed imo, I wanted to include them in 2006 but by the time I wanted to edit them I could not find all the results. As for UTC times, I'm not sure? I actuallt like the one that there is now, but it doesn't seem to showcase the trophy enough. If the trophy image is a free image that can be placed on the main page (fair use images can't be, there must be permission to use the image granted by the person who owns it for it to be on the main page, or be in the public domain to make it on the main page) then I'd suggest using the trophy image instead, unless the rugby world cup has an official logo then the logo would be best, I vote for the trophy if it's free. -- SmthManly / ^ManlyTalk / ^{ManlyContribs} 04:03, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

Du Manoir

Hi Hamedog! Thank you so much for the compliments, it's always a pleasure to get (positive) feedback, esp. from NZ when it comes to rugby. I added the reference to the Du Manoir article, though the book is in French and out of print. And I looked aroud for a website with more than what I just included with no success, unless it's just for sources. I'll add them and keep my eyes open. I redid the articles on NZ provinces in the French WP because some of them were pretty sloppy. My next job will be to add the details of the finals of the French championship. Shall I make a separate article or just use the existing one? Anyway, now we're ready for Tana to arrive! Huge! He'll have a lot to do to get Toulon out of the hole they're in! Cheers! Oh actually, I really do not know, seriously. In the end, there will always something which makes me support or oppose someone. Lets see what this thing would be ;). Oh alright, I will be honest. At the moment, I seem to oppose you (but I am newbier than you, I joined in July 2006), because although edit count does not really matter, yours is pretty much around me (4500, mine is 3000), which is not so high. Again, it doesn't reflect your capabilities, but it shows your contribution to Wikipedia. You might want to see this. Also your answers to the questions are somewhat questionable, not so specific, which makes some editors, including me, worry. However I do agree about the AfD thing, that it is not a compulsory thing for an admin, there are heaps of jobs out there for admins. But lets see, maybe things will change. Again, good luck. Hello! I would recommend withdrawing your RfA early and concentrating on the points raised by the discussion. Specifically, these are:

1. AfDs - read and get to know the policies, as per the answer to question 1. Your error metioned above comes from not reading the guidance thoroughly before experimenting. Well done for having a go but unless you have the facility to delete articles you can't commit to a delete decision, even if it is obvious!
2. Mediation - Question 8 refers to this as a possibility of resolving a dispute. Are you aware of the procedures and guidelines that are available to be followed?
3. Blocking policy - please read this guidance in relation to your response to question 16. Denial of editing privileges is punitive. We do it for vandals on WP:AIV but should it be done for people involved in edit wars, for instance?
4. Vandalism - one of the big areas for admins. The tools with which we are issued enable us to block/unblock editors; delete/restore and to protect articles. These tools are all essential in vandalfighting, something that the flat, open architecture of Wikipedia facilitates. Non-admins can assist those with the additional tools by patrolling recent changes and new articles; looking at the lists of new users and flagging articles and user Talk pages respectively with the appropriate tags.
5. Civility - I appreciate that the RfA process is trying and I think that you have been asked many more questions than the average candidate. Some of your responses to the discussion appear to be snappy or stressful - [2], [3] and [4], for example. It is easy to see pseudononymous comments as attacks. I don't think that any of the contributors were attacking you, although they have jumped upon a couple of key points. The best way around this is to take a deep breath, step away for a moment and calmly check the policies and guidelines before responding. Believe me, if you think that some of the contributors to your RfA discussion have been harsh in their views, just wait until you have to intervene in an edit war or run up against someone who thinks that their view is the only one that counts! That is when you have to keep a cool head; the cooler the better, as it is difficult to argue against a calm and rational voice that is speaking from the perspective of understanding policies.
6. Watch your spelling - there are several mistakes in your answers to questions; equiped > equipped; its > it's (line 1); thinks > think (question 2); there > their (question 7); arguement > argument (question 8); concensus > consensus (question 10); editted > edited (question 14); familure > familiar (question 15). There are more but the point that I want to make is that an admin has to communicate clearly and mistakes hinder clear communication.

There is nothing in the above list that marks you down as a failure. They are all small points which, when worked upon individually, will result in your editing prowess improving remarkably in a short space of time. You can always open another RfA around Christmas or the New Year and I believe that it will stand a much better chance of success after you have taken the advice from the other contributors onboard. Please consider withdrawing your RFA

At this point, it looks pretty unlikely that it will pass. The current vote count is 9 support (subtracting the 3 moral support votes), 19 against and 12 neutral. There's no way that this is going to turn around and become 75% support between now and October 30. You would need something on the order of 70 more support votes and no more oppose votes.

I have not voted in the RFA because to do so would just add to the "pile on". I suggest that you save yourself and everybody else the agony of a protracted RFA.

It looks like you have good potential to be an admin although you probably have to work on your interaction style a bit and gain some experience with admin-type activities (e.g. AfD, AIV and RC-patrolling). Of course, your anger and frustration at people not getting your misunderstanding of the "this AFD" question didn't help. I know that you were right and they were wrong but the way that you expressed your frustration just dug you into a hole from which there is no getting out at this time.

I'm interpreting your response to mean that you agree with me and wish to withdraw your nomination. It would be improper for me to "retract" your RFA. The proper way to do it is for you to go to the RFA page and express your desire to withdraw your nomination (I think the best place is immediately below your accepatance of the nomination). RFA is sometimes a harsh and uncomplimentary process. I think the "Moral Support" and "Neutral" votes are trying to tell you not to lose heart. Hi. I'm really sorry about your treatment. When I first came here (and for quite a while afterwards) it was pretty easy to get to be an admin. All you needed to do was not quarrel too openly with anyone and be here for a few months and hey presto! I'm afraid in some cases it's just people pulling the ladder up behind them and in others it's just envy. But don't stay away too long. Sorry to hear about Phantom's passing away

We lost our dog seven years ago. She died early in the morning while we were trying to find a vet that was open and could euthanize her. We took her body to the vet to be cremated. I cried all the way to the vet and all the way home.

I hope you will retain your fond memories of Phantom and I wish you the best in finding another pet that is as loving as Phantom was.

Crusaders Squad

Hey, since when has this new system been around for listing players in the squad? The reason I ask is because Crusaders just got rated GA and now the squad formatting has changed? Why have the national flags besides the players; all New Zealand Super 14 players have to be contracted to the NZRU and eligible to play for New Zealand (with the exception of some Pacific Island players) so why bother with the flags? I think the same goes for the Australian teams, so it would really only been relevant to the South African teams, but most of them are South African anyway. So I see that as very redundant for the S14 teams (maybe not other professional teams). As for the wiki-linking every name, I've tried to avoid that as red-links look pretty dodgy, and also because many of the names link to articles on other people (e.g Peter Nixon). Its quite a long story. But pretty much, I annouced on #Wikipedia that I was going to test the reverting of vandalism. I was talking to Shawdow42 and he said that if I don't stop, he would report me in on WP:AIV. So, in the name of comedy, I added myself there. I took a look at your block request and edit history. Perhaps you don't realize this, but when you vandalize a page and type "just testing" it's still vandalism - and a specific violation of WP:POINT. Wikipedia would be a better reference source if our volunteers spent less time addressing breaching experiments and more time improving articles. So yes, you can get blocked for real for doing that. Yeh man, for the PSA Article, all the info is coming from the 102nd Annual PSA Athletics Meet handbook, it has a list of all the trophies names, a little bit about them aswell as the winners. Gah, I was thinking about another Pinochet. About a month prior to his death, Pinochet admitted everything was his fault and said he was close to death. Someone removed it from ITN that time, saying the article wasn't sufficient. As for the Pinochet death, I only removed it on the basis of the problem with ITN death candidates. See [9]. How on earth is that an attack???!!? If you actually bothered to read the previous persons edit, they changed the tense of the opening of the article. This change was from something like "Vista was released" to "Vista will be released" on the grounds that in was not yet Jan 30 in the United States. I can't see how that is a personal attack. Quite frankly, it is a prime example of why the rest of the world hates America - because they are ignorant of how the rest of the world works. WikiProject Aviation proposal

There is currently a proposal to create an Aviation WikiProject, which would serve to clarify how all the aviation related projects relate, and help with interproject editing. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Aircraft#Proposal_Recap for how the projects hierarchy. Part of the reorganization proposes that, because of its very limited scope, WikiProject Red Bull Air Race World Series become a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject_Aviation. For an idea of how task forces work, take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history. They have a number of task forces, listed here. As described by them, "task forces are informal groups of editors gathered for collaborative work on a particular topic within the field of military history; all project members are encouraged to participate in any that interest them." The benefit of such a system it that the sub-topics have all the resources of the overall project at their disposal. For instance, the Military history project banner, is placed on every military history page, and the related task forces are listed at the bottom of it. All military history related articles are thereby joined under one roof. I just happened to stumble upon your project, and had until now never realized it existed. By joining forces with another project you will benefit from increased exposure. Ahh, I see -- I don't usually keep too close a watch on RfA. I know RfBs have been locked tight, in the aftermath of all that. Last time I was at WP:BN it seemed most of the RfAs open at the time were doing pretty well. Hm, well, as far as mentoring, I've gotta be honest and say I'm not too sure how practical it is, heh. A lot of the stuff I go after is mostly busy-work -- revert a few people here, block a few vandals at WP:AIV, check out some unblock requests at CAT:RFU, keep WP:RFCU in good working order. But, if you can figure some way that my feedback would be useful, I'll be happy to provide thoughts and such as I'm able. I've never been too sure about the path to adminship -- I like to think most anybody can get there, as long as they stick around for awhile. In general, though, I think people look for things including dedication to the project, a level head in disputes, article writing, counter-vandalism, knowledge of policy, participation in policy and deletion discussions, and that sort of thing. If you help out at WP:AN and its sub-pages, you'll probably have a higher profile among the people who watch RfA. Name recognition helps, I think, but it isn't everything. People do seem to like diverse candidates who've contributed in a number of areas. But especially that level-headed, helpful attitude. Scotch College References

Im just enquiring about the references on the Scotch College, Perth article - references 8-13 are of the same book, with no page marks. I dont see a problem with 5-7 because they state page numbers. But why do you have 6 references for the same book, with no changes in the title (to include page numbers) Twenty Years 02:38, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I am aware of slander and libel but I don't think Australian Law applies in this situation as the offence technically occurs in Florida, coming under United States Law (as Wikipedia's servers are hosted there). On what grounds would I be blocked? I have this page set up so it is achived every 16 days. I don't believe I have done anything wrong, I just wanted to know what had occured on the Scotch College talk page, an article I have heavily contributed to. In no way am I trying to help anyone spread material that could be regarded by the courts as libel.

Just a small tip - there's an old saying "choose your battles", this is *really* not worth going down over in my opinion. The above people aren't taking personal issue with you, it's the job of an admin to watch out for this kind of stuff to ensure Wikimedia Foundation doesn't get sued.
