I responded to your query on my talk page but you didn't notice. Hook is in going on DYK and will appear tonight but is currently using your caption. After you respond please notify User:Materialscientist. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus (talk) 22:19, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I changed the hook from ATL4 by Gato to ALT3 by Marcus (verified; could have just postponed this nom, but don't feel there is enough controversy for that). It is in Q2 and will be featured in an hour. Feel free to amend. Materialscientist (talk) 03:57, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

DYK nomination of James E. Boyd

Hello! Your submission of James E. Boyd (scientist) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Gatoclass (talk) 12:26, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

DYK

Hi - sorry to bother a busy guy. I am just curious as to how you and your colleagues decide which DYK nominations to verify? My reason for asking is that there are still several nominated articles from March not yet looked at, whilst more recent articles have already been promoted to the Main Page. Cheers. DYK and I-P articles

Hi Gatoclass,

Now that we have all calmed down from that shitstorm a few days ago, I thought I would approach you with a proposal. I read the discussion at User talk:Sandstein/Archives/2010/April#Clarification requested and am confident we can come to an agreement that would avoid all the problems that have arisen from I-P DYK articles. From what I'm discerning, most editors concur that certain actions at Template talk:Did you know imply the actions of an uninvolved editor. For example, it would be unacceptable for editors that have contributed to an article to mark the article at Template talk:Did you know with the  ,  ,  , or   icons. Nor would it be acceptable for an involved administrator to remove an article from the Template:Did you know/Queue after it has already been vetted for numerous days by uninvolved editors.

A review of your editing history reveals quite clearly where your POV sits in the I-P conflict. Thus I would like to formally request that you consider yourself "involved" for purposes of i-P articles and avoid adding any of the aforementioned DYK symbols to articles within the I-P arena. I also request that you cease removing I-P articles from the Queue after they have been vetted by uninvolved editors. I consider myself "involved" for purposes of the I-P conflict and, unless I'm mistake, have never added any of the DYK icons to I-P articles. Commenting about articles at Template talk:Did you know, like other "involved" editors, is of course acceptable, and would be greatly beneficial if coming from a highly intelligent editor like yourself.

Such an agreement would go along way to calming things at the DYK's for I-P articles and would go a long way to minimize unnecessary drama. I hope you can save time by agreeing to this proposal so that we don't have to go through a drawn-out Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User conduct. Please don't take this is a threat; the point of a RFC/UC would not be to get you in trouble over something like misusing your admin tools, but just to get on the record how most of Wikipedia's community view actions taken at Template talk:Did you know.

Sincerely, --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 02:40, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

My talk page is not the appropriate place to make proposals regarding the operation of DYK. I cannot unilaterally decide what DYK policy will be. If you want to discuss these issues, the appropriate venue is WT:DYK, where all interested parties can participate. Gatoclass (talk) 04:50, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
It's not a policy proposal as much as comment on what editors perceive as current policy and admin behavior. A simple agreement on your part would assume arguendo that it's an extra-policy agreement if you like. But if that's not the approach you want to take and don't want me to comment further at this talkpage, that's fine. Further action will not take place in the immediate future, as my wiki-time is limited by real-life, but I will bring this issue to wider Wikipedia community.--brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:58, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

The flag of Libya in 1972–1977 was the flag of the Arab federation. This is the file: Flag of Egypt 1972.svg .
Can you change this page so the 1972 flag will be added as it was already done in the Syrian page ?

Summit Park Mall DYK

I dunno; almost all of the sources on Walden Galleria are local sources, and that's a GA. Doesn't seem any different for Summit Park -- the sources may be almost entirely local, but WP:LOCAL suggests that since there's enough information written in the local sources to support a full article, then it's okay -- there's certainly too much information on the mall proper just to dump in the Wheatfield, New York article. I will appreciate

if you are to avoid commenting on my DYK nominations. More than once you proved that you have a strong negative bias toward Jews to say the least. Because of you I was unfairly topic banned. You are involved with me. You've also have been very dishonest about my articles and me in your statements. It is about time to let others to handle my DYK nominations.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:54, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, stop overreacting. All I did was comment on the grammar. I wouldn't have commented at all if someone had not made a comment overlooking the problem. Gatoclass (talk) 16:41, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Come on now. You call this comment about grammar? Are you really going to try to verify Josephus? As I said just let others handle my DYK nominations once and for all.--Mbz1 (talk) 17:24, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Look, I am really not interested in your bad faith accusations or your baseless accusations of "Jew bias", but this is precisely the kind of attitude and comments that got you a topic ban in the first place. I have reviewed none of your articles since your ban and have little interest in doing so, but I have no intention of being silenced at DYK either, nor of responding to such demands, so you are wasting your time here. Gatoclass (talk) 18:47, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
The thing is that I could prove all my accusations against you with countless differences. I would never accuse somebody without facts, never. Even this very post, where you claimed you commented only on grammar, while you did not, proved your dishonesty yet another time. Please have a nice day and leave my DYK nominations alone.--Mbz1 (talk) 19:02, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, you did have your chance to demonstrate these charges at the AE you filed against me but you are the one who ended up with a topic ban. But I really think you need to read WP:AGF and WP:NPA because after all this time you are still throwing around offensive comments in post after post, as if you haven't remotely comprehended the reasons for your topic ban in the first place. You need to understand that it is not acceptable at this project to accuse people of dishonesty unless you have strong evidence in support of it. It's not acceptable to accuse people of bias and bigotry without evidence as you have done time and again. And in case you are unaware of it, I want to make it clear that I do find these accusations offensive and if you continue to make them, I will have little choice but to ask for further sanctions. I have no desire to see you sanctioned further but this is becoming very tiresome. You need to drop the WP:BATTLEGROUND mentality and acknowledge that perhaps the people who disagree with you do so in good faith, not because they hate you or some group you might happen to belong to, but simply because they have a different perspective. You are not likely to survive long on this project without the ability to acknowledge that. Gatoclass (talk) 19:49, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
It does not mean a thing that I was topic banned not you. Please go ahead, and ask for "for further sanctions" against me, but before that stop being uncivil towards me, and stop calling my writing "nonsensical" and/or "rant" and so on.--Mbz1 (talk) 20:01, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Request regarding 201 at DYK

Perhaps you could suggest an ALT hook for the article 201 (South Park) that would be satisfactory? -- Cirt (talk) 01:10, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Hey Gatoclass, I have expanded an article for possible inclusion in DYK on 9 May, and the nomination is at Template_talk:Did_you_know#Nominations_for_Victory_Day_.289_May.29. Could you possibly take a look at it, and let me know there if there are any problems with it. Walking beam

Hi Gatoclass. I see you deleted the disambiguation text at Walking beam and redirected it to Marine steam engine#Walking beam. However, the use of walking beams is not confined to marine engines. One definition is "(mechanical engineering) A lever that oscillates on a pivot and transmits power in a manner producing a reciprocating or reversible motion; used in rock drilling and oil well pumping." I have also come across it in mining engineering, hence its link from German mining articles. It probably merits its own article in due course. In the meantime I would be most grateful if you would consider reverting the change. Thanks! --Bermicourt (talk) 18:19, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I don't have a dictionary of mechanical engineering handy, but here's another description which shows that it covers both fields: A primitive form of steam engine (stationary and marine) dating from Newcomen and Watt! It has been argued that walking beam is a corruption of working beam as this is how the engine works or functions. There is a diamond shaped walking beam (steel in modern ones and one or two cylinders and pistons. Steam is admitted to the the cylinder, the piston (and the beam) tilts up gravity valves trip on the opposite cylinder and the process repeats itself. A walking beam engine can have a flywheel as the marine types would (the ships's paddle wheels) or it could be used to operate pumps where it would be direct action on and off. they have been auxiliary powered by other means (such has diesels) and sre still in use on oil wells pumping up thick crude oil- quite a profitable venture in the Middle East. The internet has numerous examples of non-marine usage. Also see parallel motion which shows its use on a static pumping engine. Another reference says "It lingered on for many years with stationary engines, especially those with walking beams and vertical cylinders." And finally here are 2 mining definitions, one from the EU: 1. Supported at fulcrum on a post imparts reciprocating motion to drilling cable and tools suspended in borehole. Source: European Union.. 2. The beam used to impart a reciprocating movement to the drilling column in percussive drilling. Syn: oscillating beam; rocking beam b. On cable tool and churn drill rigs, the beam that carries the string of drilling tools at one end and is connected to a cranked drive wheel at the other. The rotation of the wheel causes the tool string to lift and drop; thus the hole is drilled by concussion. So it looks like there are two major uses; and modern static ones still exist - e.g. on small oil wells in Germany: I will take a photograph the next time I see one. --Bermicourt (talk) 18:49, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Sleep well. --Bermicourt (talk) 19:28, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

It's not a rejection of your article, it's just a notice about a couple of things that need improvement in order for the article to comply with DYK. It shouldn't be much trouble for you to correct those minor problems or find someone to help you do so. Gatoclass (talk) 15:46, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
If it was not rejection why you added a symbol versus comment. Besides here is the article you promoted Guillaume Beneman. It has no references in every paragrapgh either, but you have no problems to promote it. I fixed my article. Take off you rejection now.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:54, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, Guillaume Beneman has one uncited paragraph, which I missed. However, it has five paragraphs, 12 cites, and is well written by a highly regarded and experienced user, so I'm not going to quibble about a couple of sentences. I will take another look at your article now. Gatoclass (talk) 16:02, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Re: protagonist in Juan José Carbó

Hello, I checked the line. It reads, "his career as a cartoonist with the protagonist, Don Homobono. It could be more correctly said or stated, his career as a cartoonist by drawing the protagonist, Don Homobono; however, the first statement is correctly. If you wish, I will change it to the more gramatically correct second version. About the Google translations I provided, while Google is good, it "loses something in the translation" both literally and figuratively. Spanish like English continues to grow unlike Latin which is a dead strict language. There are many ways to interpret almost anything. Google uses a "stiff" or formal version that is almost akin to the King's high English. The average person on the street wouldn't interpret a passage the same way Google does. I include translations when I do Spanish articles as a courtesy so the average does not have to open up Google translate him/her self. ----moreno oso (talk) 16:44, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree with what you recently posted on the DYK template page. However, I think the last sourced item as per my post above got it right. He probably worked a blue collared job most of his life. But, I am willing to go with whatever edit you wish to make for the sake of WP:CONSENSUS. Also in using protagonist, it is a stong "buzz-word". Don Homobono was his break-out cartoon strip character that he developed and moved on with. In that sense, Don Homobono is a protagonist. ----moreno oso (talk) 02:52, 14 June 2010 (UTC)
BTW, do you speak Spanish? Gato is cat in Spanish. ----moreno oso (talk) 02:53, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Have I looked into what? Gatoclass (talk) 13:32, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
You left a comment on its DYK nom about checking into the usage of protagonist which is addressed above. No one has moved to advance the nom by verifying its hooks or length. Effectively, it's a stalled nom. ----moreno oso (talk) 13:38, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
I left a message there earlier today. Didn't you read it? Gatoclass (talk) 13:40, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

I haven't been there in awhle since my DYK for today hit. The children's magazine reference is in the Juan_José_Carbó#Comic_strip_career section. First statement cited. ----moreno oso (talk) 13:47, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

The cited source doesn't state that it was a children's magazine. Gatoclass (talk) 13:55, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
It does. Please see the Google translation Third of way down. About a third of the way down, there's a picture of him with some woman. The first sentence underneath the cartoon mentions he drew for a children's magazine supplement. ----moreno oso (talk) 14:07, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Okay, but the article says that Don Homobono appeared in a children's magazine and the source does not confirm that, it appears to say he wrote for a children's magazine called Pipe Break or something. So if you alter the article to conform with the source, I think it can probably be promoted. Gatoclass (talk) 14:12, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
That's too literal an interpretation of the hook. It's a combo of three statements (if I read the nominator's thoughts correctly)
  1. He drew the character.
  2. He drew for children's magazines.
  3. He drew for an adult magazine.

None of them are collectively tied together other than he was a comic strip illustrator who drew for different mediums. ----moreno oso (talk) 14:16, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Let me repeat, the article does not conform to the source. The article states that Don Homobono appeared in a children's magazine and the source does not confirm that as far as I can tell. The source states that his cartoons were published in a children's magazine which Google translates (probably incorrectly) as "Pipe Break". The article has to conform with its sources, so you will have to fix this before the article can be promoted. Gatoclass (talk) 14:21, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Ocean Victory

I've proposed an Alt hook. Re the convoys, I think it is easier to read like that rather than as paragraphs of prose. Mjroots (talk) 10:21, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

url

I'm not sure what the problem is -- perhaps you have to clear your cache?

Is it easier for you to open the url here? See http://books.google.com/books?id=9QhZjQqBy_4C&pg=PA130&dq=%22operation+maritime+guard%22&hl=en&ei=vLgNTM_NIcKAlAeB1Km7Dg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=6&ved=0CEcQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=%22operation%20maritime%20guard%22&f=false

That still won't open for me. It's probably because I live outside the US, Google books does not give the same access as it does for Americans - it's a frequent problem. I guess I could try the other source again, but I tried three times already and it stops loading at around 180 kb, so I thought all things considered it might make more sense to let someone else have a go at verifying this one. Gatoclass (talk) 21:25, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Wow, I never knew that it didn't open outside the U.S. It's pretty clear -- would it help you if I quoted the footnote for you word for word? Or am I not trustworthy on that point. I would hate for it to not be promote because nobody is responding to your query.--Epeefleche (talk) 21:31, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry, it will get promoted. All eligible hooks get promoted sooner or later. Since yours is near the bottom now, it shouldn't be too long before someone verifies it. Gatoclass (talk) 21:34, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Really? I didn't know that. You have much more experience at DYK than I do. Tx. BTW -- one other point, just to take your temperature on the issue. I asked a sysop from DYK what I should do w/articles that have just been increased/drafted, but that are in AfD. He suggested that they should be listed at DYK immediately, without waiting for the AfD to complete (though they will not be promoted until the AfD closes without their deletion). Do you agree?--Epeefleche (talk) 23:14, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, you should always list the article even if it is at AfD, because articles are supposed to be listed within five days of their creation. If you list them late, they may not be accepted. After listing, reviewers will wait for the AfD to end before doing a review. Gatoclass (talk) 23:17, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Perfect. Tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:55, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Your recent changes to the kundalini article

Gatoclass, yesterday I added some text with some existing references, not adding any references, just reshaping a paragraph. This was all preceded by discussion on the talk page. But you then went and removed both references which had been there for some time. This was not discussed at all on the talk page. This was a very knee jerk reaction from you Gatoclass. Furthermore, you went and added some unreferenced material to the introduction, again with no discussion. You're not exactly working with the spirit of collaboration here. DYK stuff

I'll but offline much of today for family stuff. Can you work the hooks left that are left from days now in the pink/red zone? I'm not sure what to do with several of them. Also, Prep 1 will need moved to queue 3 today. Leaving this on MS's and Wiz's page too. Thanks. RlevseTalk 12:34, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Your take on possible pitfalls or benefits

Hello Gatoclass, Since you've been involved with the Meditation page for several years, and have probably seen many ebbs and flows of various kinds of efforts, I was wondering about your "take" on my idea, expressed HERE on the talk page, for how we could accommodate Makeswell's interest in listing multiple methods. So far no one has responded. Based on your gut reaction and/or your experience with the page and, are there any obvious pitfalls that I'm missing? Many thanks in advance -- Health Researcher (talk) 17:05, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

"Kundalini syndrome"

You heavily edited this article after I had made a lot of contributions to it. You focus seemed to be excising the words and experience of Kundalini Yogis. Too bad. How can an article on anything to do with kundalini not have some perspective from the East?

Moreover, while Yvonne Kason's book is heavily referenced in this article, in it she never once considers kundalini experiences a syndrome. Rather, in Dr. Kason's words, "...giving an unusual experience a non-pathological name - and learning it has parallels in many cultural and spiritual traditions - helps us integrate it into our lives." (Kason, p. 56) This whole article as I first found it was pathology-based. That is why I chose to add to it.

I hope you will relent and allow some - perhaps a little less - references from the original tradition of kundalini.Guru Fatha Singh Khalsa (talk) 19:15, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
