Question

I have observed some pretty remarkable contributions from this account. I am curious, why are you not an administrator. Pardon that you have struck me as the kind of editor who could be a good one, and that you seem qualified by a cursory review. I am working on an essay, and I believe you are of the adman class. I'd like to see you become an admin. This essay might enplane, but you are exactly the kind of editor I had in mind. My76Strat (talk) 07:12, 29 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

ACC #67048

Hi, with regards to this closure, the guide says: "In case of requests that are a perfect match to an existing local account on another wiki: if an account of the exact user name requested exists on any other language Wikipedia and has more than 0 edits, it should be declined as Taken", but your closing statement said "Confilcting account is inactive. last edit in '07 and no log entries" which would seem to conflict with this rule. Mato (talk) 21:11, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

The account has had absolutely no activity for almost 5 years, that's "Inactive". Sometimes I guess it comes down to a judgement call. Mlpearc powwow 21:26, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
I understand what you were saying, but perhaps the guide should be reworded. The "Perfect match" section doesn't mention 'active' or 'inactive' at all and so implies it's not a case of activity, simply a case of 0 edits or >0 edits. I agree with you on all points by the way, the guide is just very specifically worded (hence why I hesitated) so maybe some tweaking might be necessary. Mato (talk) 21:43, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
You have a good point, bring it up in IRC and get some other opinions and maybe consensus. Mlpearc powwow 21:56, 4 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well even if I rejected to become a user rollback rights, can you still give me an example on how to use Huggle or Twinkle gadget? Thanks. Hamham31 (talk) 03:18, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Now Twinkle is a very good tool, not only can you revert vandalism you can easily warn the users you revert. You can welcome new users, place maintenance tags on deserving articles and much more. Just click this link: Twinkle and follow the instructions. If you have any trouble let me know. Cheers. Mlpearc powwow 03:29, 6 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Sean Peyton Ross

Thanks for your !vote on the AfD. In an edit conflict with your !vote, and in a similar message intended for my talkpage, Sean Peyton Ross has said that he plans to edit articles at some time in the future on various topics. (He also separately mentioned that military commitments present problems for his editing at the moment). Many of his comments suggest there is still confusion about what user pages can be used for, and other things. However, applying a very large slice of WP:AGF to his statement about intending to edit real articles at some time in the future, I am considering withdrawing the AfD. As nominator I believe I can do that, but not with valid Delete !votes still present. How would you feel about reconsidering your !vote based on his statements? --Demiurge1000 (talk) 02:22, 10 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please can you explain why you consider the recent edits vandalism.

If you believe the information to be inaccurate, I can move it to the discussion page for 'discussion' but given that the article does not appear to be one that many other people are interested in editing, I think that it's likely to languish there for some time.

How can we find a way through this so that we can improve the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.96.161.207 (talk) 01:01, 11 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hamham31 / Someone requesting a confirmation rights

Hello Mlpearc, this user Pinkioa is requesting a confirmation rights. Her reason is this: She want to add the fact that Christina Grimmie is going to be performing on the Disney Channel show, "So Random!". I commented to her that everyone is welcome to edit an article in Wikipedia, but make sure she will have a source. If you want to see her reason, you may go to Request for Permission, section Christina Grimmie. Thank you and cheers. Hamham31 (talk) 09:01, 19 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanx for the note. About the reverts (I kinda forgot where I was going with my question) You can check your User Contributions in the Vector skin there's a link for "User contributions" on the left hand side of the page under Toolbox, this will take you to the same special page as the link above and you can scroll through your edits. For a "revert count" like your edit count but for reverts I'm not aware of anything that will do that, doesn't mean there isn't a way. Sorry if this is all vague, you can ask at Wikipedia:Help desk for a more precise answer. Cheers Mlpearc powwow 15:09, 19 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Johnpaulmcvea / Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings, My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thank-you,

John-Paul Mcvea

Hello, and thanks. I have a short questionnaire (five questions) which I am asking Wikipedians to complete if they would like to be a part of my study. I will post these questions below, on your talk page. If you'd like to answer them, please do, and I will take your responses into consideration along with the contents of your user page. Thanks again. Johnpaulmcvea (talk) 20:34, 26 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Johnpaulmcvea / Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study

Thank-you for agreeing to participate in my study, entitled “Online Self-presentation among Wikipedians.” I appreciate it.

As I indicated in my last message, here are five short questions about your user page that I would like you to answer. These will help me to understand your motivations for creating a user page such as yours. Please be as brief or as thorough as you like.

5 QUESTIONS

1. Are you a member of social networks such Facebook or MySpace?

2. In addition to maintaining a user page in Wikipedia, have you also written or edited articles? If so, about how many times?

3. What are the key messages about yourself that you hope to convey with your user page?

4. Have your Wikipedia contributions ever received feedback, such as being edited by others or commented on? Have you received a message from another Wikipedia user? If so, do you think your user page positively or negatively affected what other people said and how they said it?

5. Do you see your “online self” as being different from your “offline self?” Can you elaborate?

Please indicate your answers to these questions on your talk page, or on mine. Please respond by October 1st so that I have time to properly read your responses. If you like, you can email your answers to me instead (jmcvea@ualberta.ca).

Thank you again : )

Study Procedures

• With your consent, I will analyze the language of your user page and gather basic statistics such as the count of words, the frequency of words, the number of sections, and so on.

• I will also read the text of your user page, looking for elements in common with ads posted by other people. I will note whether you include a picture, or links to other content on the internet.

• I ask you to answer my five questions, above. This will take about ten to fifteen minutes to complete. I will ask you to answer the questions within a week, and send your answers to me.

• Throughout my research, I will adhere to the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of Human Research Participants, which you can view at http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/gfcpolicymanual/policymanualsection66.cfm

Benefits

Your messages regarding the pictures I uploaded

I own all my own media, I took the pictures and the person in the pictures is my father (which I handle all of his online media content)

all the pictures I posted are NOT on any other website other than one. which I can replace if need be.

so I want to make these pictures available to anyone as long as I get the credit and don't mind commerical/non-commercial uses for other people.

can you please just tell me which license fits my criteria and how do I go about changing the license??

sorry I'm new to this language and it's a lot of technical stuff to figure out.....

thanks,

afshin

Hello, Santurman Even if those are your images you still need to log "your" permissions for Wikipedia to use the images as the template I left states, you can find more information here: Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries Mlpearc Public (Talk) 17:44, 30 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Your note regarding: File permission problem with File:Words With Friends Logo.jpg

Thank you for your recent note on my talk page regarding File:Words With Friends Logo.jpg. I believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content and per your instructions have added the {{non-free fair use in|article name}} tag. Please let me know if further action is required. Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your follow up note. Per your recommendation, I have filled out and applied a {{Non-free use rationale logo}} template. Is further action required in order to remove the copyright notice from the file page? NinaSpezz (talk) 18:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nextel logo deleted

Hi, You deleted the Nextel Communications logo I had uploaded, due to redundancy (although this is a copyrighted logo so it should not have been uploaded to Commons). Shouldn't be removed this one instead of the deleted logo? Fma12 (talk) 02:55, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, I did not delete it, I just tagged it as redundant. An admin (Master of Puppets) deleted it. Mlpearc powwow 03:00, 1 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mlpearc,

In response to your comment, and move of my comment to a "wrong venue" template: In the future Don't, move my comment(s) to any template whatsoever at your own discretion, without consulting me about it. I find that my comment was valid, and also for the fact, two requests above this one that I was commenting on, an Administrator did the same thing. Permissions for Uploaded Photo

Hi Mlpearc, Dayglored here.

You flagged an image I recently uploaded: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bill-Owen-Old-Time-Radio-Talk.jpg for permissions. The photo was taken by Bill's daughter (Carolyn Owen) in 2000 at a public event where Bill was giving a talk on Old-Time Radio. Carolyn has just submitted by email the permission form specified in the message I received from you. I have added the "OTRS Pending" tag to the photo description page.

I really enjoyed reading your "powwow" page -- very interesting and fun! Please let me know if anything else is required for this permission. Thank you very much for your help and guidance. Dayglored (talk) 01:04, 3 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

When not to create accounts at ACC

Hi Mlpearc. As you're the ACC admin that approved my ACC account, I thought it would be best to ask you. Under what conditions would I deny a user an account at ACC? I ask because I always AGF and figure if a person is willing to go through the trouble to ask for an account, I'd be willing to make it. Of course I defer CU blocks and range blocks to the checkusers. And If I find any suggestion of socking I will deny. But I was wondering if there are any other conditions to deny an account. My thinking is that users with an account are easier to track (and I do watchlist any users I'm uncertain about). So here's the questions;

  1. Should we strive to WP:AGF when dreating account and give the benefit of the doubt to the user asking?
  2. What other conditions should be used to deny an account?

Thanks very much for your help. Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 02:30, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes, AGF is the backbone of ACC as with most of the project. We have requests that the IP's talk page is full of vandalism warnings (which in most cases also have a {{schoolblock}} attached to it) in this particular instance it's assumed that the requestor is not the vandal, just someone who's only access to the web is at their school. The most common reasons for denying a request is due to usernames being too similar to an existing account and the technically impossible usernames. I don't think I've ever denied a request based on vandalism, I also assume as you state the any problems will be quickly addressed on wiki. Flagged request deal with usernames similar to existing accounts these request require the account creator bit to create. Many of these requests are created because of the conflicting accounts inactivity. When assessing the status of a conflicting account we follow a set of guidelines to determine if the account is active or not. This flow chart when followed will determine if the account can be created or not. Here is the ACC bible refer to it when needed, and most users monitor the ACC IRC channel #wikipedia-en-accounts connect where you can always get advice and answers to queries, hope this rambling helps. Cheers Mlpearc powwow 11:38, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much, Mlpearc. You answered all the things I was worried about. I really appreciate your help and also for approving my account at ACC. I've got most of the bible (i.e. ACC guide) memorized and I usually spend some time reviewing the requests that other people have processed just so I can get a feel for how things are done. Thanks again for the help. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 02:17, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
You are very welcome. I hope you enjoy ACC and once you hit the limit of six request in a twenty-four hour period a couple times go to Requests for Permissions and request the account creator flag.   Mlpearc powwow 03:12, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'm happy to help get new users onboard even if it is only a few (as I understand only a few percent of accounts created at ACC actually end up editing, which is normal). I have been hitting the 6 account max, but I'm on dialup so I hang up, dial in again and get a new IP (so I get around the restriction that way). I'm probably violating the policy, but I'm hoping others don't mind as long as I'm not making accounts for sockpuppets. I still have a bit to learn, so once I feel comfortable handling the more challenging requests I'll head over to WP:RFP/ACC. Thanks again for the help and encouragemnt. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 04:44, 20 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:C Spire Wireless logo 2011.jpg

A tag has been placed on File:C Spire Wireless logo 2011.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The discussion

Hi, w.r.t. your question "Where is the discussion for this change?", you can find something in the edit summary of this edit and in the subsequent reverts by different contributors to that particular version. Note that you reverted to that same version here as well, and twice to a version containing that particular phrase "1968/69–2006" with an explicit pointer to a relevant source (<ref name="formed" />). I had put that source pointer in there in order to stop an ongoing anons edit war. Apparently it didn't help. Perhaps we shoud put an HTML-comment in there as well? - DVdm (talk) 07:25, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't think a couple edit summaries is considered consensus, why don't you post it on the talk page and see what happens. As far as the reverts, I was reverting the actions and as a result of doing that I saw the change to the infoboxx. Mlpearc powwow 14:54, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
I considered the edit summaries and the reverts by non-anons to establish sort of consensus. But anyway, I'm not at all interested in the subject of the article. I stumbled upon it by accident in a Huggle session and tried to stop one of the silliest edit wars I ever saw here. So, feel free to do whatever it takes to stop the silliness :-) Cheers. - DVdm (talk) 15:27, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Black Sabbath Edits

--69.120.46.76 (talk) 03:28, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello:

We seem to have some of the same taste in music. But we also seem to have a little dilemma here in regards to some of the information and representations on the Black Sabbath Wikipedia page. Please explain to me your school of thought that makes you or contributes in you feeling and thinking that Black Sabbath is just a Heavy metal band? Would you consider yourself to have factual and in depth knowledge on Black Sabbath and on musical structures, components, roots and styles? Because it is incompatible with logic, facts, musical structures, components, roots and styles to represent Black Sabbath as just a Heavy metal band. Black Sabbath is a Hard rock band that plays a variety of music, just as the original members a long with certain other members of the band have stated numerous times over the years. Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill for the most part do not even like the majority of Heavy metal music. For many years they did not like to be referred to as a Heavy metal band. But over recent years, they now basically, to some extent, go along with being called a Heavy metal band by certain people. But they have not changed their belief that they are a Hard rock band that plays a variety of music. This is reflected upon and proven during many interviews with Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill. Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin are all Hard rock bands that play a variety of music. They do play some Heavy metal style songs and are contributors in primarily creating the Heavy metal genre. Black Sabbath seemingly has the most influence on the genre. Once again, factually, most of Black Sabbaths songs are not Heavy metal music/songs.

Here are some examples out of the many Black Sabbath songs that are not Heavy metal music/songs. The Wizard, Warning, NIB, Farries Wear Boots, Snowblind, War Pigs, Changes, You Won't Change Me, Dirty Women, Gypsy, Rock 'N' Roll Doctor, It's Alright, Air Dance, Juniors Eyes, Hard Road, She's Gone, Killing Yourself To Live, Looking for Today, The Writ, Sabbra Cadabra, Am I going Insane, Who Are You, Spiral Architect, Over to You, ETC,ETC,ETC.

Besides many other things, I am a critical thinker and an academic. I enjoy a variety of music and Black Sabbath is my favorite band. I have been playing guitar for over 35 years. For the most part Black Sabbaths Main Structures and Styles are Rooted in Blues, Jazz, Rock, Ballads, Hard rock, etc, etc. Moving forward to the other issue. Adam Wakeman is supposedly the Keyboard player for Black Sabbath. Yes, technically, so far up to this point, he is not a full member. According to Joe Seiglers Black Sabbath website, supposedly the current lineup is, Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, Bill and Adam.Got to run. Hope to hear from you soon. Tony, Bye.

Well, it's not just me. The information in the infobox is well established by community consensus as is the majority of infoboxes throughout Wikipedia. As to my in-depth knowledge of Black Sabbath's genres, style or classification I can only say I'm just a fan. I seen them live when they (and I) were a bit younger and have been a fan ever since. Mlpearc powwow 03:55, 13 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

How do I put an article live?

I've created a page in my user space and I'd now like to move this to live. Having checked on the frquently asked questions etc I found the following:

9. Save the subpage one last time. Now it's time for you to move the article from your personal user space (as a subpage) to Wikipedia mainspace (where the real articles are): At the top of the article, click the "move" tab. (If you can't see the tab, you're not in normal/reading mode.) You'll see something like Figure 4-6. Figure 4-6. The standard page for moving (renaming) a page gives you information and warnings. Use the "Measure twice, cut once" rule: Check your spelling and capitalization carefully before you move your article to its new home. It's not the end of the world if you misspell or otherwise err with the title of your new article (you can always move the page again), but it's embarrassing. In the "To new title" box, change the old name of the page (in this case, "User:Your username goes here/New article") to the new name of the page (in this case, "Sam Wyly"); enter a reason (typically, "Creating new article"); and click the "Watch this page" box (see the section about your watchlist).

Click the "Move page" button.

I'm afraid I cannot find the move button and can only assume that this is because I am not an 'authorised user'. I promise that I'm a nice person who will adhere to the ethos of Wiki - can you hep me with this? Publishing a page

Thanks for coming back to me. I have managed to do something but I'm not sure whether or not this is having the desired effect! I put the article forward for submission yesterday and received the following:

Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Phoenix Trading Review pending. This submission is waiting to be reviewed. This might take several hours, or even days, at busy times. There are currently 559 submissions waiting for review at this page.

If the submission is accepted, then this page will be moved into the article space.

If it is declined, then the reason will be posted here. You may like to check back here later to see the outcome of your request.

In the meantime, you can continue to improve this article by pressing the "Edit" tab at the top of the window. If you require extra assistance, you can visit our live chat.

I was hoping this was a positive but the number of current submissions seems to have stayed the same... To be clear the page I wish to create is called Phoenix Trading. Thanks for coming back to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yvonne109 (talkcontribs) 14:11, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the welcome info.

I found your username as the "tour-guide" to my newcomer status & thought to say hello and Merry Xmas. Blurbzone (talk) 06:16, 20 December 2011 (UTC) BlurbzoneReply
