Editing Wikipedia and the Five Pillars

I understand your manner of thinking but Wikipedia must be open for new visions, new propositions and new analytic opinions. I really think that Wikipedia must be progressive place. Because as all humanity some people are conservative like Pope inquisition and others are like Djordano Bruno. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dgeorgieff (talkcontribs) 08:25, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your comment Dgeorgieff. I moved this to its own section for clarity. I applaud the efforts you have been making in Wikipedia, and want to direct you to two of the links that you may find helpful as you continue editing, both of which are in the Welcome messsage I added to your Talk page. The first is to the [[Five Pillars]], which begins by explaining how Wikipedia is first and foremost an encyclopedia, which is strenghtened through the Core content policies that includes information (I quoted from the page here) about:
  1. Verifiability (WP:V) – Material challenged or likely to be challenged, and all quotations, must be attributed to a reliable, published source. In Wikipedia, verifiability means that people reading and editing the encyclopedia can check that information comes from a reliable source.
  2. No original research (WP:NOR) – Wikipedia does not publish original thought: all material in Wikipedia must be attributable to a reliable, published source. Articles may not contain any new analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to advance a position not clearly advanced by the sources.
The key to sourcing and citations is that they should be verifiable and without original research. In this way, the articles you have recently been editing can all use more citations and explanation, though what is cited to support the claims should come from verifiable evidence, and not only your own writings. I am happy to help you add citations to some of these recent articles you have edited, but they must be from verifiable articles. --- FULBERT (talk) 13:41, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Week 6, Extra points, IRISCYY

My experience with this Wikipedia course assignment was great in overall. With flexible due days, the assignment is not going to overburden me or influence my expected schedule. I quite like the sense of achievement the assignment could bring. During searching articles, I got a lot of new information about topics I am interested in. More importantly, the assignment can bring extra credit which is wonderful. Through taking Wikipedia course, I learnt how to edit articles in Wikipedia and understood how Wikipedia works. Personally speaking, I might continue to edit on Wikipedia carefully since it might contribute to people's understanding and enrich my understanding.---IRISCYY (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 16:41, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi, professor. Actually, I found two images in CC search with the license of CC BY 4.0 at first and then uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. However, the Wikipedia told me that my uploaded images violated the copyright and deleted them from Wikimedia Commons. I felt disappointed and decided to add two new images which are not gotten from the outside and have already existed in Wikimedia Commons. —Caryliu1020 (talk) 03:29, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
Don't get discouraged Caryliu1020. Many people have struggled to work within the image guidelines, and I tend to focus only on the ones I personally have taken and added to articles. Keep up the great efforts! --- FULBERT (talk) 02:53, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week6, Extra points, Zi Xu

Hi, Professor.

I was really happy when I finished my homework on Wikipedia. I will always remember this experience. Because I think it's a skill that I have, and I think a lot of people don't get things done on Wikipedia. I think it's really amazing and I'm really happy.

I learned to edit Wikipedia and add information that I consider important, and I learned how to cite references on Wikipedia. Furthermore, I learned how to search Wikipedia for the information I wanted and put it all together. And very importantly, I know how to sign and add improving in the Wikipedia.

I will continue editing on Wikipedia because I think it is a cool thing, and Wikipedia is a very authoritative place, I can learn more knowledge.

Overall, I really enjoy this period of Wikipedia.

Thank you!--ZhiZhi Xu (talk) 02:55, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for this feedback and for your work on this project ZhiZhi Xu. I hope you continue with this, and let me know if you ever need assistance with this in the future. --- FULBERT (talk) 21:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

**Bonus**, Caryliu1020

1. The overall experience with Wikipedia is helpful and impressive, because I make contributions to the public in Wikipedia. The contributions and article views bring me a sense of achievement. I feel happy and proud that many people will get benefits from my contributions.

2. These Wikipedia assignments teach me a lot. I learn how to edit in Wikipedia, how to communicate with each other in Wikipedia, how to add citations and references in Wikipedia, and how to insert media in Wikipedia. I became a good Wikipedian.

3. I will continue editing and make contributions in Wikipedia. However, I will not actively find a certain article to improve on purpose, because it is unnecessary and time-consuming. After I search in the Internet and read a Wikipedia article, if I find something missing or some errors that I know the missing or right things, I will improve the article and fix errors.

Caryliu1020 (talk) 04:57, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Great efforts in this regard Caryliu1020. I hope you continue with this, and let me know if you ever need assistance with it in the future. --- FULBERT (talk) 21:05, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week 6, Bonus, Shenshi0603

1. Overall, I do enjoy the experience with this Wikipedia course assignment. I learned something new, applied what I have learned to practice, and I am glad to see my contribution would be beneficial for users all over the world. It is an amazing experience.

2. I have learned how to edit and improve Wikipedia articles, and I realized the importance of image copyrights and citations' reliability on Wikipedia. What I have learned would help me to become a better person and student.

3. I will definitely continue editing Wikipedia because I would like to see that more Wikipedia users could learn exactly what they want, and may inspire them to become editors as well. Editing Wikipedia articles would give me sense of achievement because what I have edited may help many people some day, the sense of achievement would also stimulate me to continue editing Wikipedia articles. Thank you very much!

Week 6, Bonus, Maomao Yi

1.What your experience was like (overall) with this Wikipedia course assignment.
In fact, in the beginning,i thought it was just an assignment. But then i realized all the contents i edited on Wikipedia will be displayed to the public without any review. This display will affect the thinking of viewers. And myself is the one that is affected because Wikipedia can help me learn new knowledge quickly and easily. Then i paid attention to whatever i edited on Wikipedia. I did many research on paper library like sage and others to make sure what i added with reliable citation and no bias. One time my edit was totally deleted by the next editor who thought my citation is not reliable. That made me feel disappointed and care more about my reference.

2.What you learned.
Although it seems that everyone can modify it, but untrustworthy or biased edit will be deleted by the next editor. I learned that knowledge needs to be objective. Because it is easy for us to unconsciously bring our own subjective opinions when expressing, and this will affect the thinking of others. Knowledge should be objective and neutral, letting the viewers make their own thoughts and judgement. In this way, society can have different voices instead of monopoly of ideas.

3.Why / why not you intend to continue editing on Wikipedia.
Because i also benefit from Wikipedia and i hope to help it get better. During this process, i found many topics have not been edited for a long time and require more editors to modify and complete them. I believe free knowledge sharing can make society better.

Thanks! --Maoyi.95 (talk) 17:02, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Great making sense of this experience Maoyi.95. I hope you continue with it, and let me know if you ever need assistance with it into the future! --- FULBERT (talk) 21:10, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week6, Bonus, Xicong Liu

1. What your experience was like (overall) with this Wikipedia course assignment.
I enjoy the process of training and editing the articles in Wikipedia. I never thought there is a day I can also be an editor in Wikipedia before. I am glad that I involved in the improvement of Wikipedia articles which can benefit all the user throughout the world. It is a wonderful and meaningful experience for me.
2. What you learned.
I have learned to edit and improve articles based on reliable sources. I also learned how to avoid plagiarism and know the importance of copyright. This knowledge will help me to perform better in editing articles and writing papers.
3. Why / why not you intend to continue editing on Wikipedia.
Of course, I will continue editing the articles in Wikipedia. It is a mutual benefit method because I am both the user and editor of Wikipedia. I hope that I can see more high-quality articles as well as others. I might not edit such frequently, but I will be active to edit the articles whenever I see any error in it. Thanks for this course, very impressive!
--Xicong Liu (talk) 19:50, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

I am glad you found this a useful experience Xicong Liu and hope you continue with editing Wikipedia! --- FULBERT (talk) 22:34, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week6, Assignment 4, Naiyu Tian

Hi,professor I chose option A and edited another two articles, assigned them on the dashboard. I added a trading platform on the first one article and trust segment on the second one. Useful additions Naiyu Tian. --- FULBERT (talk) 22:36, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week6, Bonus, Naiyu Tian

I think for me, overall, the wiki experience is challenging and I feel responsible for what I have written and the changes I made on the Wikipedia page. Just thinking about how many people will review the wikipedia page I have made changes with makes me nervous. So when I was editing the page, I am quite cautious. Firstly, I learned how to edit wikipedia page in the source editing model. I learned by inserting what kind of symbol on the page will I get the result I want. Secondly, I learned how to avoid plagiarism from the perspective of Wikipedia. If I am going to continue editing on Wikipedia page, the main reason will be it will make academic life of everyone easier.Naiyu Tian (talk) 01:45, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your closing thoughts on this Naiyu Tian, and I hope you continue editing Wikipedia. Let me know if you ever need assistance with it. --- FULBERT (talk) 22:38, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week #6, Bouns, Tgs847

My experience with this Wikipedia assignment is great! Learned about how Wikipedia works and actually contributed some contents to help people know better about the topic. During editing, I also had received conversation from other editors for suggestions, which is so cool! It makes me feel proud when I see my editing is being realized by other people and they agree about it. I enjoy this process very much and will continue editing my interested topics in the future. Thank you for this great experience! --Tgs847 (talk) 21:25, 6 March 2019 (UTC)Tgs847

Glad you found this to be a useful experience Tgs847, and I hope you continue editing Wikipedia. Let me know if you ever need assistance with it. --- FULBERT (talk) 22:42, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Please check via the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W_Hotels link to the changes: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=W_Hotels&type=revision&diff=886530866&oldid=885847227 Rg2493 (talk) 21:37, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Interesting image you shared; looks like a lovely destination Rg2493! --- FULBERT (talk) 22:45, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Week 6, Bonus, rg2493

Overall, this experience is very interesting. It changed my previous view that people can edit almost everything with less strict rules. I learned that the credibility of Wikipedia is established by the team who sets up the standards, the editors that follow the standards and contribute, and readers that keep updating information. After learning how the system in Wikipedia works, I feel more inspired and become more willing to share the knowledge that I learn from credible sources somewhere other than Wikipedia itself. The whole experience gives me a sense of satisfaction because all the contributions we made might have helped a lot of people who need that information. Rg2493 (talk) 21:48, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi professor, I choose plan B as my work, the title is Jökulsárlón. I added a picture which I took in the beginning of this year from Iceland. I think this picture is much more recently than the old one. So I just added it. The link for the article is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6kuls%C3%A1rl%C3%B3n And the change of the article link is https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=J%C3%B6kuls%C3%A1rl%C3%B3n&type=revision&diff=886539551&oldid=881351560Thank you! --Ashleyatnyu (talk) 22:39, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

week 6, bonus, Ashley

1. During this experience in Wikipedia this section, I learned Wikipedia is a platform faced on everyone which people can change the content anytime. That result in some content are not exactly academic right in some way. I would say this is an interesting work, doing contribution in what you interest is an exciting stuff. 2.I learned that wikipedia is a good way to learn basic knowledge, but for the academic knowledge, we should use more academic tools to get the information. And also I learned all the information without the fact need to come form the academic journals. And need to cite it after use these information. 3.I would like to edit on wikipedia in the future. Because since some policy in China, we can not use wikipedia, so I would like keep this account and edit information with the news and information update. --Ashleyatnyu (talk) 01:39, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
