All alone? edit

Allegory of Winter

--Hafspajen (talk) 07:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

I fell in love with a wind-up souvenir
I bought it downtown as I was on my way to meet you
She sounds the like the songs you used to sing to put me to sleep
Now that you're gone, she's all that I've left to hold
And I feel so all alone
No one's gonna fix me when I'm broke
How do you cry with inanimate eyes?
You're never gonna smile with the way that you are
And I feel so all alone
I can't be you
I thought you might appreciate
The way that she dances
The painted look upon her face
She must have come from the sun
I want to take her through the park
Where she'd tell me I'm all that she wants
If she could even talk
  • Hmm. I was just listening to the Smiths on my way to work: "I just might die with a smile on my face after all." Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Drmies (talk) 16:27, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

House with a history edit

Balls to it

DYK ... that the opera house for the Dresden court, Opernhaus am Taschenberg (pictured), opened in 1667 and was dedicated as a church in 1708? - and was made a ball house, then an archive, the demolished (in the 19th century, not SED blasting a church). Deserves to be covered in more languages, I believe. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:09, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

ehemm… ballroom, though "ball house" will generate loads of clicks   Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 10:20, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
... thank you ;) - no clicks, not in the official hook. "Ballhaus", - more than one room, any other word? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:26, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Je suis perdue... innocent me
... and now I found out that "ball" actually refers not to dancing but to playing with balls, for even more clicks, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:39, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
… and I found out that real tennis wasn't just played by Henry VIII and a market I sometimes stand at is owned by a secretive organisation set up by two men and a pocketful of gold in the MIddle Ages. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 15:59, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
And it took me a long time to figure out that AC/DC's "I got big balls" was a joke. Gerda, I thought of you in the car, listening to classical music for a bit--I tried, but it was a bit...on the...boring side...sorry. Drmies (talk) 16:29, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • I still don't accept the word Spargel as a word, though I'll accept it as a dirty veg. I've never eaten a white one: that's a bit too much like fellatio, but the green ones I like, roasted with balsamic vinegar. That discussion you linked fell off of the way-back machine; I remember it vaguely, and that I couldn't really make up my mind. I am convinced, though, that my poor memory makes me look at many editors with an objective view, having forgotten that they rattled my cage or that I'd blocked them indefinitely or something like that. For instance, I keep forgetting whether Epeefleche is a die-hard deletionist or a die-hard inclusionist, so whenever I run across them I am forced to take their arguments seriously. What a time sink!

X, I had hoped they'd be playing the other Bach, since apparently 'tis the season for it, but it was someone much more boringer than that. At least Gerda's Bach is in a good book. Also, I'm done grading--yes, students, you're welcome. And on that note, I took my Prius to the shop today for an oil change and got "Hello Dr. Mies'ed" by a former student. Always nice when that happens. (And it shows you how far you can get with a college education!) Drmies (talk) 17:32, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ah, Epeefleche - will you help with one article? we were discussing it at Yngvadottir's. Need someone expert in the area. Hafspajen (talk) 00:05, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Actually it could be a new DYK to, easy to expand that 5X. It's only two sentences. Hafspajen (talk) 00:07, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'll be happy to take a look. Can you supply a diff? Epeefleche (talk) 06:33, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Happy to try to help. But given the situation w/my long-pending current DYK submission, perhaps I'm not the one to submit it to DYK. Epeefleche (talk) 00:02, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Florida–Florida State football rivalry edit

Dr. Mies, thank you for your recent revert of the attempted addition of the Seminole head logo. WP:Florida Gators expressly limits its use of the primary Gator head logo to the Florida Gators sports program and primary team articles (about 17 uses) in order to avoid over-use of a copyrighted non-free image per WP:NFCC. We use the script "Gators" free image on all rivalry, season, bowl game, etc., articles to avoid over-use for the primary non-free logo. Most other college teams enforce similar NFCC compliance restriction, either voluntarily or because of previous NFCC enforcement. Of course, most IP editors and registered newbies have no knowledge of our NFCC policy. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:22, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, I figured it'd be something like that. Also, I HATE FSU, haha. I didn't know we had rules and deals here, but that's fine with me. I wish, though, that Nick Saban would allow me to put a nice Alabama A in a userbox on my user page. DYK that my this year's Alabama t-shirt is unbeaten? Drmies (talk) 23:46, 17 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • I don't think the Alabama "A" is subject to copyright -- it's a letter and the typography isn't creative enough. FYI, the Alabama "A" is the same as the Atlanta Braves "A". Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 01:42, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • It's not creativity that wins us championships. :) Drmies (talk) 20:34, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • I was going to make a joke about strong recruiters and the ability to admit student-athletes with 875 SATs, but I decided that would be unnecessarily provocative. So, riddle me this, Batman: where did you earn your university diplomas? Alabama? I was under the vague impression you may have earned one of your degrees abroad . . . . This is the local Pub. Do socialize or do things that are not directly related to improving the encyclopedia. It is productive, new articles will come out of it. It's called creativity. For those with no sense of humor: whereby something new and in some way valuable is created (such as an article about an idea, a joke, a literary work, painting or musical composition, a solution, an invention etc) Hafspajen (talk) 04:44, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Some heat for your meat edit

  Man of Mustard
I love Xmas, even though I'm a non-practicing Jew. Family reunions, kids running all over the place and Uncle George (moi) inciting them to chaos. But nothing says Xmas like a slice of spiral cut ham on a soft roll with a healthy dollop of Dijon -- bonus points if you can assemble the whole shebang using only the knife and meat fork. But outside of the holidays, I highly recommend Ba-Tampte. In Yiddish it literally means "delicious". You can only find it in the refrigerated section and if you have access to a Kosher store in your neighborhood. Some Halal stores carry it (Jews and Muslims have far more in common that most people realize). If you are fortunate enough to have a Wegmans, they carry it as well. I took the last four jars and an $18 gallon of fresh squeezed OJ from them last week. Expensive yes, but a rare treat. I have nothing but contempt for whomever is responsible for inventing frozen concentrated orange juice. Have a great holiday and a happy and healthy New Year for you and yours. Two kinds of porkMakin'Bacon 06:24, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Ba-Tampte? I'm going to have to defer judgment to my Jewish Expert Colleague, the one who introduced me to latkas (he tells me his whole house will reek of it for weeks). I doubt that we have fancy-schmancy stuff like that down here: this isn't exactly the center of the world, practicing or non-practicing. In fact, I'll ask him right now.

Thanks for the tip--happy non-practicing hanukkah to you. On that note, I'm finishing up a bottle of Mikkeller "Santa's Little Helper"--holy fucking moly it's delicious. Don't let Favonian know I'm appreciating Danish beer; I can't believe those cowherds who didn't convert to Christianity until the second millennium AD can make better beer than most other peoples. [I see now that I left out two or three major religions from this rant: I'll do better next time.] Thanks 2kpork! Drmies (talk) 23:14, 18 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Alice Wetterlund edit

The article Alice Wetterlund has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. K-pop edit

Could you look at this? (Very sorry for bothering you.)

I just read your comment on "A Pink", and I gotta say that I absolutely agree with you. I don't know if you remember but we have discussed together before a while back about pretty much the same issue. Surely all these Kpop articles are in a big mess. You see, even going through such long discussion (about such a trivial issue), I (and Random86, etc) tried our best to give every possible reasonable arguments to stop all the irrelevant Kpop information from piling up; however, we still meet such resistance. It's really hard to change the Kpop editors' mentality. Even if it seems "late"; at one point in time, someone has to start resetting the standard all over again; otherwise, the problem can never (at least has a small chance) to get better.--TerryAlex (talk) 20:48, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I remember. You know, Moscow isn't even the worst of 'em. At least Moscow is a human being. Half of the accounts in that area are, I am convinced, sock accounts of a couple of PR people working for SM Entertainment and other outfits. The rest are fans, and unfortunately that entire unencyclopedic mess is helped along by a couple of editors who know the ins and outs of Wikipedia but still think that we are just a depository for factoids on trivia about subgroups and anime and Transformers. Ha, what it needs is ArbCom and a few dozen admins and editors willing to get their hands dirty. What it really needs is knowledgeable editors who read Korean and can help determine what's reliable and what's not--that would be a start. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:46, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

181.140.167.24 edit

Hi Drmies, I have a strong suspicion that 181.140.167.24 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is this poorly behaved kid based on irrational hot-headedness and an IP that geolocates to Colombia. It's been two years since they first started--I'm genuinely surprised and disappointed that he hasn't grown out of it by now. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:39, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Some people never grow up, Cyphoidbomb--LTA and Wikipediocracy are full of them. You could add them to the SPI but that's not going to do very much. Whack a mole is all it is. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 00:24, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Fmelikov is back edit

Hello Drmies,

Fmelikov is back editing again and has resumed his edit-warring over Lavash. This time what is even more concerning is that he is editing material that is directly copied and pasted from this website [1]. He even admits that he copied and pasted in this edit-summary [2] and still reinsterts the passage. Étienne Dolet (talk) 20:44, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I see Bishonen took action already. Thanks, and I apologize for my tardiness, and I am sure Charter apologizes for their ongoing inability to get me consistent internet access. Ha. Drmies (talk) 14:26, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dispute input edit

Hi, I was wondering (if you have time or feel like it) if you could check out this discussion on my talk page with someone you've had experience with: User talk:Musdan77#The Amazing Race 25. (article history) And as you can see, the latest edit on the article is this editor reverting someone else over the same issue. Thanks. --Musdan77 (talk) 21:25, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Can I say first of all that I find it amazing that a. people (still) watch that show and b. people actually want to edit those articles? Drmies (talk) 21:35, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, the latest season had the lowest ratings, but I didn't start watching it until a few seasons ago. But, the reason that I didn't start a discussion on the article talk page is because (well I was hoping I didn't need to) that after 25 seasons, it seems strange to want to change things now -- but like I said, I wasn't watching the articles until now. And I see on the talk page that I'm not the only one who feels that there's an ownership issue. Anyway, if it comes to it, would it be all right with if I copy and pasted what you wrote onto the article talk page? Thanks again. --Musdan77 (talk) 22:34, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, sure, as long as you either paraphrase or put it in quotes and make it clear that you're quoting from elsewhere. Yes, Ryulong is a bit of an edit warrior--I wonder when he sleeps, given that he's owning so many articles, all over the place. Drmies (talk) 22:40, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Peace and joy edit

No, not yet my Christmas greets (I will post no individual ones, but on my user pages on 24 Dec when we start). No, but Mit Fried und Freud (Buxtehude), on the Main page now, and no, don't translate funeral music written back in November. Please: for the above mentioned greets I look for an image to also illustrate Vom Himmel hoch, because I think the present adoration is not quite it, - an angel please, 16th century preferred, and it was written for children, therefore a bit on the naive side would be great. Otherwise you will get this. (Any help to the hymn is also appreciated.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Gerda, I'm the last person to ask about images... That adoration looks quite nice, esp. the ox. Drmies (talk) 00:21, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

hello drmies edit

I plan to get out of wikipedia forever, and I want to delete my pages, I could say how, but without blockages, thanks (user:MariaTudor1DeInglaterra) and (user:ELreydeEspana)

  • El Rey, that's fine with me, but there's only a few things I can do. One is to delete user page and any subpages (sandboxes etc); I cannot delete/remove a user talk page. Also, I need to hear this from both accounts. If you like I can block one or the other or, if you're really sure, both--but Bishonen has some useful hints for those who wish to leave (or be "pocketed", as Bishzilla might say). So, tell me if that's what you want, and confirm that from both accounts. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 00:04, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kpop Concert tours edit

I saw you nominated United Cube Concert for deletion, what do you think about these articles such as SM Town Live World Tour IV, SM Town Live '08, Exo from Exoplanet: The Lost Planet, Girls' Generation 'The Best Live' at Tokyo Dome, SM Town Live World Tour III, SM Town Live '10 World Tour, etc.? I never paid attention to those concert tour pages, but since I happened to see you nominated that page, so just want to know the guideline for this? Based on Wikipedia:NTOUR, "Concert tours are notable if they have received significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources. Such coverage might show notability in terms of artistic approach, financial success, relationship to audience, or other such terms." I am still unsure.--TerryAlex (talk) 23:20, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Most tours that have articles on Wikipedia are not notable and are little more than calendars and set lists, I'm sure. The thing with NTOUR is that, fortunately, it is quite clear: it needs sources that discusses the enterprise as a tour, not sources that give individual reviews of individual shows--those are a dime a dozen. Look at Zoo TV Tour, which happens to be an FA (I must have seen it on 11 May, but we were late getting there so I missed Claw Boys Claw, my favorite band ever), and look at the notes and bibliography. Your average K-pop tour article does not have that kind of sourcing or discussion.

I nominated a few tour articles a couple of years (or months) ago, but I don't remember if it was K-pop or not. I think my AfDs were successful. Drmies (talk) 00:06, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Whoa, those articles are terrible. Let's see how Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Exo from Exoplanet: The Lost Planet fares. Drmies (talk) 00:10, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
There are a ton more of those, Super Show, Super Show 2, Super Show 3, Super Show 4, Super Show 5, Super Show 6, Super Junior K.R.Y. The 1st Concert, Super Junior K.R.Y. Special Winter Concert, Catch Me: Live World Tour, Tistory: Special Live Tour, Tone: Live Tour 2012, Time: Live Tour 2013, Tree: Live Tour 2014, With: Live Tour 2015, Girls' Generation Asia Tour Into the New World, Girls' Generation Tour, Girls' Generation World Tour Girls & Peace, The First Japan Arena Tour (Girls' Generation), Girls & Peace: 2nd Japan Tour, Girls' Generation Japan 3rd Tour 2014, KCON (music festival). I'm a K-pop fan, but I cannot tolerate this kind of redundancy on Wikipedia either. Since you know the guideline and can analyze it well, I'll give you the list so you can entertain yourself whenever you have time and see which one (I'm sure all) of those can be deleted. I usually only pay attention at those "main" Kpop artists' articles, but I just remember this article too Blanc & Eclare, it's basically just about a newly-established company by a well-known Kpop singer. I'm sure it has no notability either.--TerryAlex (talk) 02:07, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, thanks Terry--but I can't go around putting all those up at AfD. They'll think I'm a h8er. And I got nothing against K-pop fans, but this is an encyclopedia. Let's see how the present AfD goes. The best thing one could ever hope for is a set of guidelines accepted across the board for these articles; I've just looked at the article for Secret and it suffers from all the things wrong with all the other articles. It's really sad. Drmies (talk) 02:23, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Shinyang-i: I think that article "Blanc & Eclare" can definitely be deleted. And take your time for the rest of them. If you can analyze it well, then there is nothing wrong.--TerryAlex (talk) 02:40, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year edit

It wasn't edit warring edit

It was reverting a blocked vandal's actions, but I can see how it looked suspicious. I have taken it to the talk page even though it didn't need to be. Thanks. Walter Görlitz (talk) 03:14, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) That wasn't what you said, however, and the IP was unblocked some time ago - no block evasion is involved - and was not ever blocked as a vandal. It's awkward to keep track of unregistered editors on dynamic IPs, but this guy is not a "revert on sight" case. I've responded on the article talk page. Yngvadottir (talk) 03:30, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Blocked? No. Vandal? No. To lie like that is really disgusting behaviour. 82.33.71.205 (talk) 10:23, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, IP, but note that Yngvadottir and I have, I believe, dealt with the matter. I understand the frustration, but let's move on. Walter, your rolling back of my comment on your talk page wasn't exactly in the same Christmassy spirit in which the comment was offered, but since I got a GREAT Christmas present I'll think nothing more of it. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:46, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
What'd you get? All of Alabama's football games on Blueray? A lifetime mail order supply of different kinds of bacon from around the world? I had a wonderful Xmas Eve dinner. A Thai coconut milk curry with chicken, oyster mushrooms, red bell pepper, onions (two kinds), and carrots, not to mention lemongrass, fresh basil leaves, Kafir lime leaves, and a homemade chili paste. BTW, Walter didn't remove your comment because he didn't like it; he just liked Sinebot's edit better.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:14, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, Sinebot certainly is a friendly bot. That dinner sounds delicious, actually. I made pizza, with grilled chicken and BBQ sauce. I certainly got enough exercise, kneading the pizza dough by hand and then putting a 12-ft trampoline together. The present is on my Facebook page. :) Drmies (talk) 16:27, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Do you really have a Facebook page? You make your pizza by hand. That's great. Did you make the barbecue sauce, too? It's not just putting together the trampoline. If you want exercise, you need to use it, and be careful, you're not as young as you used to be.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:00, 25 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

I initially intended to merge these two articles Gee (EP) and Gee (Girls' Generation song) (I revised the latter article 1 but it has been reverted back to an earlier version than that) together because some of the info is redundant and get repetitive/overlapped, but I think I could have done it wrong and I got into a discussion with "Moscow" on the talk page. I guess they should stay separately? but I just want to ask you, what would you trim down for these two articles?--TerryAlex (talk) 00:17, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Hmm. Well, I have no opinion on the matter, really--I don't know which one should go, if one should go. As for trimming, the one I looked at (and trimmed the links) needs pruning in the very language, the usual K-pop verbosity. Drmies (talk) 03:59, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Drmies! Them's been done. Wonder what the story is behind Edmond Debeaumarché's being held in secret at Dora instead of being executed. I've altered the section on codes, as the obituary refers to 3 codes used by French collaborators.

Well, according to the obit, La sentence n'est pas immédiatement exécutée. Mis au secret, il est accusé de complot antinazi. There's some story here, but I don't know what it is- seems to me that he was pulled out of Dora by the Gestapo.

Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 10:29, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Accused of sabotage and sentenced to death, but then held in solitary confinement and accused of anti-Nazi plotting, before being transferred to Bergen-Belsen in April 1945 within two weeks of the British arriving? Is this a story cooked up by Debeaumarché to explain how he got from Dora to Bergen-Belsen? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 13:10, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Right, starting to see the situation at Dora was quite complex. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 13:19, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, keep me posted on your progress. We played Clue last night and I wasn't bad at it, but I'm not an expert in logic. Yes, that is the proper translation, and it is rather mysterious. My mother in law is leaving today and I may have some time to find some other sources; as you saw, much of the content was unisourced out of laziness, and because the French article...well, I couldn't easily translate that. Seems to be a bit clearer- small-time crook and informer persuades local SD chief that various French and Belgian prisoners are engaged in a conspiracy. This "conspiracy" is possibly used to provide a pretext for executing German communist prisoners and Russians from the same camp. For some reason which is apparently not clear the French and Belgians weren't murdered. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:21, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Would you have any suggestions? edit

A few months ago during the eventually unsuccessful Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Piotrus_3 you voted "oppose". I wonder if you'd like to discuss any concerns of yours, or if you would have any suggestions in the event I'd decide to run again (which I am not planning to do anytime soon, but might consider in the future). For a better sense of my work and activities around the project, I invite you to consider reviewing my userpage, my talk page archives (which are not redacted), to watchlist my talk page, or use edit analysis tools like Wikichecker, content.paragr, dewkin, xtools-pages or xtools-ec (which in theory should work as of late 2014...). I would be more than happy to talk about trust, if this is a topic of interest to you. Thank you for your time, (PS. If you reply here, I'd appreciate a WP:ECHO or {{talkback}} ping). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:43, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks Piotrus--and merry Christmas to you as well. I hadn't forgotten about you. Drmies (talk) 13:59, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Piotrus, I don't rightly see how you'd go for #3 after #2. I do think that not responding to every single oppose was a great step forward. #2 basically tanked because a. EEML was too fresh on people's minds and b. you allowed yourself to get carried away in the Giano exchange, and maybe c. too many people were irked by the Deb-business (and rightly so, IMO). #3 really just confirms that #2 was not a fluke, and I sense in the comments that folks are just tired of it--hence there are few long lists of diffs, etc. In addition, the liberal spreading of Wikilove clearly did you no favors.

Now, you certainly had some supporters, but it seems to me that if you run again you'll get a SNOW close very quickly, because, in my opinion, the most basic issue was never fully addressed. That EEML was "half a decade ago" doesn't mean it went away. Saying that it was some momentary lapse is obviously untrue and clearly not accepted by this community. (Vecrumba's comment is indicative of that "let bygones be bygones and it wasn't so bad and the others did it too" attitude--it's understandable, maybe, but it doesn't fly, certainly not at RfA.) You said in #3 that basically nothing had changed since #2, and I think the result proved that to be true, though not in the way you intended that. Without full disclosure of the EEML business, and recognition of your admin role in it (certainly ArbCom was quite clear, quite clear), I don't think you'll ever gain the trust of enough editors to pass RfA. We Got Married redux edit

Someone resurrected those 'We Got Married' couples-by-season and couples episodes listing articles. It appears there were insufficient comments to warrant deletions. So, if you're interested... ^_^

Yeah, he made that abundantly clear. His tone irked me beyond belief. Anyway, new topic! Now that editors are tagging many articles with the 'needs better sources' tag and a link to the 'good sources' listed in the Korea working group, I would like more comment on the review I did of the sources already listed as "good" and such. I'd like feedback and corrections, contradictions, etc as appropriate, so that if changes need to be made to the good source list it can be made. Right now people are being pointed there while it still contains (IMO) bad sources. It was a bit of putting the cart before the horse. So we need some consensus on sources so we can update the list, if need be. What do you think? :) Shinyang-i (talk) 22:34, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Haha, I understand your frustration but put yourself in Tom's position: it takes valid, policy-based reasons to decide on an AfD, and that's the kind of thing he needs to close. If we (you, them, whoever) had given better reasons, better argued, better written out, he would have closed them already, with two deletes in addition to the nominator's opinion. So, let's do better next time and move on.

Please point me to that discussion; I may have looked at it but I don't remember. Look, we all know that Wikiprojects etc. attract a certain kind of editor--the kind that already cares, one way or another, about the topic. In the end, WP:RSN is a better and more objective venue. Hi. You probably missed it since there was no paragraph break before it, but User:Pussypimples actually offered an alternative name after Mlpearc first brought it up. Thanks. • Thanks--I did in fact see that, but that was last week's and the user had taken no action (obviously Mlpearc can't go around changing people's names). I thought there was little point in starting a new discussion, and notes at WP:UAA indicated I wasn't the only one who thought the name offensive. I tried to ping Mlpearc, Soap, and Rklawton, if I remember correctly, but the report had already been archived. Drmies (talk) 15:30, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

G'day Drmies edit

Hello Drmies,

I must request something of you. Over the past few days/weeks I've been trying to push a certain article to featured article status (expansion started here). I have a myriad of sources, but, of course, sources are only a part of featured articles. The prose must be "engaging, even brilliant" and the entire manual of style has to be followed (have you seen the size of that fucking page?! And there are subpages and those pages have subpages, goddammit.) The task seems daunting, to say the least. So I'd like to request your assistance. You seem experienced in the area, as opposed to me which hold this as my first FA adventure. I have all the time in the world to get this done (Not really, school is fast approaching, but otherwise you'd have my full attention and collaboration) I've labelled you to be at least approachable[citation needed] and I pray that you'll be able to help me. It would be much appreciated. Cheers, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 18:34, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

(By the way, nothing after the "Battle" section is done. In fact, nothing might be "done".) --ceradon (talkcontribs) 18:42, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ceradon, might I recommend that before FAC you attempt the MilHist A-class review? It's a great precursor to FAC for military history articles - it doesn't deal much with MOS but offers very good expert review of sourcing, coverage, and prose. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:17, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Ceradon, thanks for your note. I had a quick unprofessional look at your article; it seems to me that this is well on its way. One of the things about an FA is that the prose needs to be brilliant, sure, but it also needs to be acceptable to a broad audience--by which I really mean not idiosyncratic. So, it takes multiple readers and proofreaders, and they can help get rid of slightly over-comma'ed sentences such as the one starting "The entire Army of the Potomac..." :) As it happens, Nikkimaria dropped by: they are a more than normally gifted writer and reader, and they have much more experience with some of the intricacies of the process than I do. Also, take their advice and look at the MilHist page--don't tell The ed17, but I think they're quite particular about their FAs over there. But, setting all those technical matters aside, I'll be glad to help out any way I can. I think there's a Melville poem on the subject as well. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 03:22, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, there is a Melville poem on the topic. Well, I was looking for someone to collaborate on bringing the prose up-to-date before I go into any review, MilHist or otherwise, and WP:MOS stuff, etc. I can bring the facts (I've got lots of those) but I'd love it if you could go deeper than "unprofessional" and make any corrections as you see fit :P --ceradon (talkcontribs) 03:30, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Is sockpoppetry a reason for deletion? edit

In this case, you have the article Hans Ormel and the sockfarm investigate here: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/384400km, with evidence of cross-wiki socking. The Banner talk 18:45, 28 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Well, not in its own right. There's WP:G5 but that doesn't work retroactively. Anyway, I saw they're all blocked now; I'll have a look at the article(s) in the next few days although I imagine you've already cleaned up a lot of it. BTW, I'm very impressed with how you wrote up those superscript diffs in the SPI: very professional! Drmies (talk) 03:30, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • HowNutsAreTheDutch--I hate that name, but the thing might be notable. I don't have access to dvhn.nl (I hate that MediaViewer kind of way of presenting articles; USA Today does it too) or psychologiemagazine so I can't judge whether there's serious discussion there or not; that's what it depends on. Drmies (talk)
I was doubting, so decided to ask first.   I did not clean up anything, just looking from the sideline. The Banner talk 12:57, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have dealt with this before. A sock would create an article and even if it was a notable article, it would be deleted per WP:G5. I would copy the article and then, after deletion, give it a once-over in my sandbox (references, content, etc.) and then re-create the article under my name. That way the sock/blocked user received no recognition for the article per WP:DENY. - NeutralhomerTalk • 13:09, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • The only thing you did wrong IMO was forgetting to decline the last two unblock requests directly, so I closed them with a "see below" comment to remove the user from the "unblock requests" category. :) Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 00:50, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • I understand your point, Lukeno94, but I reverted your edits because a non-administrator can't decline an unblock. As far as Kudpung declining them, he couldn't really do that because he'd already declined one, although nothing prevented him from revoking TPA. Best thing is to let another administrator deal with it. Some administrators sort of void the template in these circumstances. Others decline them or ignore them, regardless of the fact that it clutters up the cat.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:01, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Got 7 Removal edit

I thought the discussion was that AllKpop articles would be given a reasonable time before entries were deleted? You chose to rip an article of entries! Care to explain your decision? Removing articles and references within Wikipedia is counterproductive to Wikipedia itself! Mikepellerintalk 08:10, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • It's all part of WP:SOFIXIT. I don't know what you're talking about specifically; if it's List of Got7 members, well, there was nothing there worth keeping independently, especially since these artists are not individually notable and the (trivial) information there was sourced to the company website and to Allkpop.

And let's be serious here for a minute. Got7 exists since January 2014. It's a boy band made by an entertainment company which formed as a result of a reality TV show in the fall of 2013. They have made one single album, and if you want a great example of the typical K-pop fan stuff, look at Identify (Got7 album), which for "references" has nine Twitter links, one YouTube link, one Facebook link, one iTunes link, and one link to the company/band website. That's it: not a single reliable source in there. For External links it has nine YouTube video links. In addition, the band has its own template, and separate articles for two EPs and a single--adding 12 YouTube links and 4 iTunes links. It has (well, had) a list of members, and three articles on members. Now tell me that's not a walled garden of fan pages. Drmies (talk) 16:14, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Tell me when you've had a look at those articles, User:Mikepellerin, and then I'll start trimming. Drmies (talk) 16:15, 29 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • Thank you for understanding. I'll be able to get to removal/updating the allkpop/soompi links on the pages I mainly patrol hopefully by Friday 01/02/2015. I have a lot of hospital tests to go to, with no wifi.
      • User:Mikepellerin, worry about yourself, not these articles. At some point I'm going to go through and clean them out--the world is not going to end because of a few fan pages on Wikipedia. Take care, and all the best. Enjoy a few days without wifi. Drmies (talk) 05:57, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
    • Drmies, I see you removed the table of TV show appearances. This is the kind of thing that is on almost every K-pop group's page, along with lists of endorsements etc. TerryAlex, Shinyang-i and I thought notable guest appearances could be written in prose (perhaps leaving the table for shows where the group was the main cast), but other editors disagree. It's hard to be bold in removing things like this because it is almost instantly reverted. Is there some kind of guideline I could point to? I also know I would get a lot of opposition for removing the fanclub info from other Korean entertainment company pages (e.g. what happened with MBK Entertainment), and it gets tiring. Random86 (talk) 00:09, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also, what do you think about articles like this F(x) filmography, Drmies? Film and Television should be fine, but it has a long list of variety shows, radio, etc too--TerryAlex (talk) 00:24, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's what's so tough; people want a rule saying they can't include something or else they insist it should be included. It's kind of the other way around; if they want to include it and others think it's excessive, the burden is on them to show it fits into Wikipedia's intent and is encyclopedic. But, I had a discussion here that gave me a little guidance: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Pop_music, bottom section "Best practices?". Overall I think TV appearances should go into prose and should include shows on which they were the stars, frequent guests, or something somehow unusually notable. Ditto for radio, like if they've hosted a series of radio shows or had their own show. I have no idea how to implement it because, as was said, someone just reverts it and argues that "all the other articles are like this!!1!" Shinyang-i (talk) 01:21, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Probably another sockpuppet edit

user Sarcastrophe 666 is reverting everything we do, with the edit comments that we are "crusading against Korean popular culture." He just took an AFD tag off an article! Can he be reported? that's a pretty serious violation, isn't it? There was another sock earlier accusing any change to female artists' pages as "misogynistic and sexist" or some such...obv the same person. Yeesh.

by the way, his phraseology is really offensive. I lived in Korea for many years, have many friends there, and love many aspects of Korean culture, popular or otherwise. Sigh. Shinyang-i (talk) 04:13, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

also Fmekm303sm ... another sock who again removed the AFD tag AND called me a "dirty Jap". What is WRONG with these people?? This is shocking & appalling and makes KPOP look really, really bad. Shinyang-i (talk) 04:17, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • This is Vgleer, who doesn't have a girlfriend and has nothing better to do than this lengthy vendetta against Dr. K and me. He uses all kinds of abusive commentary. It's nothing to get upset about; that's what he wants. Just revert and report: recently, Materialscientist, who is one of the good guys, has blocked and tagged a whole bunch of them, and I just blocked this one. Thanks for keeping an eye out, though--it's appreciated. Your comment reminds me that I should go check out this restaurant a Korean student suggested to me. Funny thing: I had a class full of students in History of the English Language and the two Koreans were the best. Drmies (talk) 04:23, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ah, sounds like quite a saga. I don't know how to report someone for sockpuppetry/abusive language/whatever. Do I just tell you? Especially in this case, since it's an established case? Ironically in light of his accusations, I'm happily listening to bubble-gum-sugary Shinee right now. :D Shinyang-i (talk) 04:30, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
If you go to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations, you can look at "How to open an investigation", type in "Vgleer" and follow the instructions to create a new report. At some point it will be added to the already existing case--part of it is still open at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Vgleer, and the rest is archived at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Vgleer/Archive, where you can see what he's been up to and for how long. Drmies (talk) 04:56, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Or the sock can be fast-tracked through AIV by typing "Block evasion. Sock of {{vandal|Vgleer}} " Thanks to many alert admins, such as Materialscientist for example, this has proven a fast alternate route to a full-blown SPI. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 05:11, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) If either of you (Drmies and Dr.K.) are looking for the amusing silver (and what I enjoy while CUing his accounts) most of the time each account is operating from a webhosting service which (my assumption given he's using reputable providers who charge a reasonable amount) he's paying for. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 08:15, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Callanecc. That explains the sporadic nature of the socking. The low activity periods are used for saving funds to pay for the high activity period subscriptions. JJ Project edit

Regrading JJ Project, I undid your revision again and replaced all allkpop sources and those Korean sources deemed unreliable, with reliable ones (Please check yourself) and following the guideline page you linked on my talk page, included the endorsements because they seemed quite notable to me with renown brands such as Reebok and LG Household & Health Care (second largest cosmetic firm in the country). And, the information on the article did not copy what "PR people for the entertainment companies say", i just replaced them with reliable sources. The article definitely doesn't look like a fan site to me, if you think that looks like a fan site, you should check out a fan site. Not saying this to offend you but looking at articles deemed "Good" such as Girls' Generation, you'll see the similar pattern with the way KPop articles are written. If you have anymore problems with the article, please leave a message on Talk:JJ Project and discuss before doing any major changes to the article. Thanks. --Deoma12(Talk) 16:47, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

IP, PRODS, etc edit

Hi Drmies, I left the following note for you on the IP's talk page, by way of clarifying my action, which was entirely in good faith. The IP deleted it shortly afterwards, but I thought it appropriate for you to see it.

It wasn't out of any of the above Drmies: I thought it was a bad PROD (given there are some citations there), and it was done in good faith. As to AfD, I suggested that step in one of my deleted posts, as AfD tends to be where a lot of borderline articles are saved from deletion by people undertaking the necessary research to find other information - which isn't the case with PROD.

Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 18:12, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • SchroCat, thanks for your note, which I saw earlier in the history. I stand by what I said, but I hold no grudges. The comments at the AfD indicate well enough that the article is highly deletable, at least so far, but that's by the by. Take it easy, and thanks again, Drmies (talk) 02:27, 31 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Assistance needed from a Dutch speaker edit

Hi there, Drmies. I saw someone trying to upload a few articles about museums in Amsterdam. A couple got speedied, but one got through the net. I'm not trying to get it nommed again (I admit to being a bit hasty) but having looked for sources about the Huis Marseille, I can't find any except in general travel and local attraction listings, but am only searching in English and, while I could just about decipher the notability guidelines at the Netherlands Wikipedia, I'm not sure I'd be able to tell source from Reliable source. There is one photography site (lensculture) which talks about it, but I'm not sure this really proves notability.

Sorry to bother you if you're busy, but this was just a thought. LouiseS1979 (talk) 19:03, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Visually, from its Facebook page, it looks like it has good quality exhibitions, which suggests that it pulls some kind of weight in the photography world. On the other hand, it's just a nice exhibition space and not notable. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 19:35, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Xanthomelanoussprog - Yngvadottir found a source which I haven't had a chance to investigate but will have a look. It's probably borderline. LouiseS1979 (talk) 19:48, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Thanks to all of you. This reminds me, there was an op-ed in Trouw today that also mentioned a photography gallery in Amsterdam--I think it was called TORCH and it sounded notable enough for us as well. Drmies (talk) 22:44, 30 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
