August Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

She and I worked it out. Why are you jumping in the middle? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.49.22.2 (talkcontribs)

Because when you vandalise someone's user page with derogatory comments, its my business to discourage you from doing so. Vandalism is not tolerated on Wikipedia, and editing blocks will be given. I'm just informing you of the potential repurcussions of your actions. --Draicone (talk) 00:47, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Draicone edit

Stick to editing what you know about, not what you pretend to know about. You and Kinu cannot play god in the world of wikipedia. I refuse to be BITTEN. Eventhough I am greatly discouraged to continue to be an active member/contributor of Wikipedia due to your irreconcilability. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zinco100 (talkcontribs)

I'm sorry, but AfD is simply for reviewing if an article should or should not be on Wikipedia. If you feel it is notable enough, then say so. If consensus goes your way, the article will not be deleted. Thats how it works. I apologise if you feel your article is being wrongly deleted, but if you do, make it clear! AfD is, as I have told you before, a request for input and not a poll. Myself and Kinu are not attempting to play god. Wikipedia is the way it is, personal attacks are not tolerated. And why should I stick to editing what I know about? Wikipedia would not be anywhere near where it is today if people had not done basic research on a topic, expanded an article here and there, put simply, added content. This is exactly why Wikipedia doesn't guarantee the validity of any of the information on the site.
I am not pretending to know about anything that I do not. I am simply voicing my opinion on an AfD using my knowledge of policy - and I would certainly hope I am aware of policy to a reasonable extent. If you dispute this, feel free to tell me so, but not in the form of a personal attack.
I am not trying to bite you, per WP:BITE, I am merely stating policy to you. By launching personal attacks on good Wikipedia editors who simply use information available to them and considered valid, I erred away from WP:BITE and took a more frank approach to informing you of policy. I suggest you see WP:NOT. In addition, you haven't yet proved any of your statements. Per WP:VERIFY, Wikipedia is for verifiable material, whether or not that material is true. If there are no Google hits for the article, it suggest to us that the article is not notable enough; most things important end up on the web in the end and Wikipedia has to take a realistic approach to quality control.
I would have happily talked it over with you had you not launched personal attacks on everyone who disagreed with you, and would certainly make allowances if your first ever edit had not been a personal attack on my talk page. Per WP:NPA, personal attacks are totally unacceptable. Your actions on my talk page, that of Kinu's and Kicking222's all count as personal attacks. These can lead to editing blocks, and blatant violators of policy have always been treated differently to newcomers making mistakes - for example, blatant vandals who do nothing else on WIkipedia are not the sort of people I treat with WP:BITE.
I sincerely apologise if you weren't aware of any of these; after all, I hadn't heard about WP:ATTACK till a week or so after joining (although I certainly didn't make any personal attacks in that time). But you have been informed, and your actions from now on will certainly be taken into account if I have to go to ArbCom with this (as will anything listed at Special:Contributions/Zinco100, for that matter). --Draicone (talk) 07:50, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

WP:ARCAID and userpage edit

Two messages in one, how about that? :)

First of all, today featured a big quarrel on WP:ARCAID, because an editor who nominated an article mass solicited 90+ other users to vote for his nomination of Queen's University, and others called that spamming, which was offensive for the solicitor. Now I'm not an official member of the maintenance team, but I do like to help out, and I alerted everyone who criticized this mass solicitation of the vote of May 2006, which resulted in mass solicitation not being prohibited (9-7 vote count). Main argument (which I support) is that WP:ARCAID benefits from many users willing to contribute to an article. Anyway, emotions ran high, with the solicitor removing the nomination and almost quitting. Things have been cooling down and I reinstated the nomination with permission from the solicitor as it wasn't against the rules.

Some of the critics pointed out that this procedure could result in a solicitation war and I have to agree they are right. Random mass solicitation is not very helpful and probably detrimental if it escalates. Targeted mass solicitation, such as a call on a portal's or project's talk page can be very helpful.

Perhaps a new vote should be conducted which aims at prohibiting mass solicitation on individual user pages, but allows for mass solicitation via a call on a portal's or project's talk page. Perhaps a clearer majority could be established by presenting a better outlined proposal. I would appreciate your opinion on this.

Second, I was intrigued by your user page, but as I use Firefox, the [show] command is not visible nor clickable, and I am therefore unable to see all your userboxes, awards etcetera. (I compared it with IE, in which the [show] command is visible and clickable) Just thought you'd like to know. Errabee 00:21, 30 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

AIDbot edit

Hi there, I'm sorry for being nonresponsive to your AIDbot inquiries. The thing is that AIDbot needs some serious redesign (lots of people complained about some AIDbot issues) and at the moment I can't allocate enough time to cope with that. That's why I didn't adress the problems which people pointed out (although I plan to fix this problems after my exams end, which will probably be in a month). But, if you are sure that just changing the name of the page which AIDbot processes will fix the problem with renaming of the project, then I'll spare few minutes to do that this weekend. --Dijxtra 14:07, 1 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

September Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!

Thank you- but do you honestly think it's appropriate to include a citation for the name of a town? If you do, we are going to be pretty busy in the next few months adding references for the likes of London[1], Paris[2], New York[3] etc. If you require verification for your own peace of mind, simply Google it- you will find hundreds. November Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Hi there! Thanks for your help in AFC! You may not have seen the WikiProject yet, as it is fairly new. You can find it at WP:WPAFC. Hope to see you there!--Xnuala (talk)(Review) 10:28, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hehe, great minds think alike! Hm, as far as bot functions go, I think the most obvious condition would be to decline anything with no sources given. No problem with not formally joining--it's still great to have you helping out! You might want to check out Henrik's script for quick denials--you can find it on the project talk page. Also, the project talk page would be a good place to get more bot input.--Xnuala (talk)(Review) 10:54, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Articles for creation edit

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are one week in to the drive, and it's already going fantastic. Numerous days of backlogs have been tackled, with hundreds of articles having been reviewed. We do, however, have some news!

First off, a HUGE congratulations to everyone participating so far. I understand some members are inactive due to vacation, but we are still making great progress.

Secondly, make sure that before you go off and review old submissions, that you review all submissions for the present day, and the day before, so that we aren't actually making a bigger backlog, by letting submissions get archived while we're checking stuff from 2006.

Third, remember to update your running total, on the drive page. Honesty is the best policy, so if you lie about the number of articles you've reviewed, we'll all make angry faces while looking at your userpage.

And, last, if you have any questions about the drive, feel free to ask me, or any other members of the project.

Great job, everyone! We're going to get that backlog!
GrooveDog.

AFC News edit

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are nine days away from the end of the drive, and it's been fantastic! Many, many, many days of backlog have been tackled, and over 1500 articles reviewed!

To start off, a HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped out with the coordination of the drive, and actually fighting the backlog in the drive itself. Everyone's done a great job helping out, no matter how many articles you've reviewed/

Remember to update your running total, on the drive page. This is the ONLY way that I will be able to give out awards appropriately.

Lastly, I will be giving out awards on August 16th. Anyone who could help me, that would be fantastic. Contact me on my talk page if you'd like to volunteer.

Great job, everyone! This Drive has been fantastic, and I'm sure that some members of the Project have definitely made friends by collaborating on the talk pages. Thanks,
GrooveDog.

Goodbye, Draicone, and thankyou edit

I was going to give you a barnstar when I saw the note on your userpage and was disappointed to find that it was from last october. I saw a load of your edits and thought that you were active. You were as an outstanding contributer to wikipedia and you were always civil. If you read this (I know you were active recently), please return to wikipedia. WP:AFC Backlog Drive edit

WikiProject Articles for creation needs your help!
WikiProject Articles for creation has done a tremendous job in working at WP:AFC over the past 7½ months. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication! Together, we've made the submission process easier and more streamlined, developed tools to make the process go faster for reviewers, and cut the backlog down to a mere fraction of what it once was. Well done!

As you all are aware, however, our work is not quite yet done. The project still has 10 archive pages left to complete, which include over half a month's worth of submissions, many of which have not been completely reviewed. We need your help to finish looking over these neglected submissions so that we can finally remove the backlog notice from the page, and put an end to the more than two year old backlog that has been a thorn in our side for ages! Participants will receive an AFC Barnstar, so hurry up and help out while there's still work to be done! Make sure to sign in on the WikiProject's talk page so we know who is involved in what promises to be our final effort to complete this goal. Thank you for all your help!

AfC news edit

Dear AfC participant,

  1. Msgj and Tnxman307 are organising the AfC challenge! It's a little competition to help improve some of the articles created through AfC and we are hoping that everyone will get involved. For level 1, you just need to bring a stub up to Start-class. Level 2 is improving a Start-class article to C-class. And so on. To get involved or for more information please see the competition page.
  2. Those of you who haven't reviewed an article recently might not have noticed the new process that was implemented this year. Reviewing articles is now more enjoyable than ever :) You might like to give it a try. All articles waiting for review are in Category:Pending Afc requests. (Please read the updated instructions.)
  3. Please consider adding {{AFC status}} to your userpage to keep track of the number of articles waiting for review. At the time of writing we are officially backlogged, so help is needed!
  4. There is currently a proposal to bring the Images for upload process under the umbrella of WikiProject Articles for creation. The rationale is that both processes are designed to allow unregistered users to take part more fully in Wikipedia, and partipants in each process can probably help each other.

If you no longer wish to receive messages from WikiProject Articles for creation, please remove your name from this list. Thank you.

Articles for Creation Appeal edit

Articles for Creation urgently needs your help!

Articles for Creation is desperately short of reviewers! We are looking for urgent help, from experienced editors, in reviewing submissions in the pending submissions queue. Currently the are 2419 submissions waiting to be reviewed.

Do you have what it takes?
  1. Are you familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines?
  2. Do you know what Wikipedia is and is not?
  3. Do you have a working knowledge of the Manual of Style, particularly article naming conventions?
  4. Are you autoconfirmed?
  5. Can you review submissions based on their individual merits?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then please read the reviewing instructions and donate a little of your time to helping tackle the backlog.

Just to let you know edit

Your admin status edit

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on enwikiversity, where you are an administrator. Since that wiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.

We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Best regards, Rschen7754 20:55, 23 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
