WP:FILMS April 2010 Newsletter

The WikiProject Films Newsletter Volume V, no. 4 - April 2010
Project news The Tag & Assess drive has now concluded. Over 15 members helped to assess over 31,000 articles. During the drive, all of our Start and Unassessed class articles were reasssessed. The top three reviewers were Big Bird (5,200), Pjoef (2,650), and Peppage (2,390). Thank you to all who assisted with the drive. The Spotlight cleanup listing could use more participation. The first 50 articles have been reviewed, but there are still several hundred left. The listing will ensure that our project's older GA/FAs still meet the good and featured criteria. Please choose an article and help with either the images, prose, or citations. Helping to find reliable revisions now will make it much easier to maintain the articles in the future. Help ensure that our project continues to present quality articles to readers and provide great examples for new editors. This important task should be undertaken by more than just a few editors. Instructions and examples can be found on the listing's page. Our project currently has over 64,100 film-related articles, with 63,000 that have been assessed by our assessment department! Remember to always add the {{Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class. Many of our unassessed articles have been reviewed thanks to participation in the Tag & Assess drive. This month, let's try and get all of the unassessed article reviewed (we're currently at just over 1,000 articles). It has been awhile since our project had no unassessed articles, and with so many articles under our scope, it will be helpful to get it back under a manageable level. Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Clash of the Titans (2010 film), Kick-Ass (film), Avatar (2009 film), Internet Movie Database, and Iron Man 2. Hey David, I saw you recently commented on an edit request on Halo Reach, saying that there were no reliable sources. I too have been unable to find official sources from Microsoft but other reliable websites such as Amazon are confirming the release date. What do you think? Nobel Prize help appeal

Hello!

I found you on the FA team page and you seem to know your way around here on Wikipedia. I'm quite new to Wikipedia and still don't understand everything here yet. I am currently working with the Nobel Prize a very important article imo. I'm trying to get the Nobel Prize article to FA status and have thus nominated it to FA twice but none of the times it was good enough. Most people seemed to think that the prose was the major problem.

First I tried to work it through myself but I am not an experienced copy-editor, even with the help of the many guides on Wikipedia I don't think I have got it to a high enough level yet. I've tried to get it peer reviewed but I got about 5 comments and then it was closed unfortunately. Hey David. Remember me?
I have an ethical image question for you. If somebody wanted to put an image of themselves, as they appear in Halo 3 multiplayer, (edited to remove the background) onto their userpage, would that be a Non-free Fair Use image, a Non-free Game Screenshot image, or an "I made this" Free Use image? While it would be taken from a copyrighted video game, it is covered under MGCUR, and would be for personal, non-commercial use. It has also been edited from the original image.

Me again. This time I have a question that's not about Halo.
How do you make those collapsible "show / hide" boxes with hidden text? I've tried going here, but the directions are a little vague. That and I don't want it purple. The WikiProject Films Newsletter Volume V, no. 5 - May 2010
Project news For the month of June, let's work to get our non-free image issues resolved in the project's spotlight articles. Please take just a few minutes at some point this month to comment on one or more images and state your interpretation of whether the images should be included or not in each respective article. You especially may want to contribute to the discussion as the images may relate to article(s) you worked on. This is a very simple discussion, but with only a few editors participating, it can be difficult to find consensus. Further participation will help to finish off the images and allow more time to be spent on other areas of the cleanup. By the end of the month we would like to have all non-essential non-free images removed, leaving quality examples for new editors on how to use non-free images in film articles. Our project currently has over 64,400 film-related articles, with just a few unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! Remember to always add the {{Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. If you believe that an article should be assessed at a certain class, feel free to follow the assessment scale and assess the article yourself. Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class. This month, book-class was added to our project's assessment scale. If you stumble across or create a film-related book, please tag it accordingly. Currently our project only has a few books, but as they become more and more popular, this should significantly increase. Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Iron Man 2, Avatar (2009 film), Internet Movie Database, Robin Hood (2010 film), and 2010 in film. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month. Sowards, Meyer, etc

David, I understand your point, but I counter that it is as (or morseso) misleading to put Meyer's name as writer there in the infobox when it is not on the credits. I feel that we should report in the infobox the credits as they appeared onscreen and then explain in the article that Meyer did the massive rewrite which was shot. Or at the very least, report the credits as they appear on screen, then put in a parenthetical something like (Nicholas Meyer, uncredited). Or an asterisk that links to the section where it explains that Meyer wrote the shooting script. Best. Sir Rhosis (talk) 01:38, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Your Delisting of Silent Hill 2

Video clip

Since you've uploaded a few clips, I figured I'd ask you about an issue I'm having to see if you know how to fix it. I just uploaded my first video clip for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and was wondering if you know if it's possible to select a specific screenshot within the clip to be used as the title image when the video appears in the article. Currently it shows the Rebel soldiers facing the AT-ATs, but I'd prefer it be of the AT-AT instead as that is the focus of the clip. I've already tried starting the clip a few seconds later, but that is already cutting off the opening sequence of the small clip. I tried editing out the letterbox, but when I did so in several programs it always resulted in significantly decreased video quality or came out at a compressed aspect ratio. I'm sure the best option is to get a fullscreen version of the DVD and make a video from that version. However, I'm not that interested in going out to Blockbuster to find a fullscreen version just to make the clip. Thank you for providing the details about the thumbnail parameter, I figured it was out there, and probably should have searched a bit harder, but it was getting late last night as I played around with uploading this video. Hopefully I get more proficient at it, it would be great to have more examples to use so that this could be used more in the film articles. --Happy editing! The WikiProject Films Newsletter Volume V, no. 6 - June 2010
Project news Last month, significant progress was made on contributing to the discussion pertaining to the non-free images in our spotlight articles. Based on consensus, several images were removed. However, there are still multiple FA and GA articles that need some input to determine if they should be kept or not. The goal of the drive is not to remove all non-free images from the articles, but to ensure that they comply with fair use requirements. If you have not already (or if you have, please revisit) join in on the discussion to help finish off the images. Even if you comment on only a few articles, that will be very helpful in determining consensus and allow for focusing on the sources and prose of the articles. Our project currently has over 64,700 film-related articles, with just over a hundred unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! Remember to always add the {{Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. If you believe that an article should be assessed at a certain class, feel free to follow the assessment scale and assess the article yourself (it's not too difficult to determine the basic classes such as stubs, categories, or lists). Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class. Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Internet Movie Database, Toy Story 3, 2010 in film, List of Toy Story characters, and Shutter Island. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month. Criticizing me over Star Trek film cats

“ Hello, I'd ask that you stop creating and modifying categories relating to Star Trek. On one hand, there's the question of whether we need categories that will hold at most three or four items (Category:Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). Secondly, you are mislabeling many articles with improper categories (Genesis II (film), Yesterday's Enterprise. I don't want to have to go back and clean up these issues. ”

First of all, you don't personally own these articles. So sending me a message asking me to stop (without asking for a "user vote" to determine whether or not something on Wikipedia is actually useful) is extremely patronizing. Secondly, I just started working on the cats so of course, there going to be quite small at first. Third, it's stated in the article for Star Trek: The Motion Picture that Genesis II was one of the key influences in the screenplay.

Given you managed to get File:S02-spock's funeral.png, also a cast shot, through Khan's FAC without a problem, you seemed like the best person to ask. What's your deal with being so anti-IMDb?

You keep reverting/deleting a ton of information regarding the broadcast television versions of the Star Trek films. It's getting extremely frustrating regarding your apparent lack of faith (not to mention overprotectiveness over Star Trek related articles) of the content over there. IMDb (perhaps the most in-depth film/TV production databases around) has been around much, much longer than Wikipedia itself, so I find it kind of quizzical that you immediately think that the material isn't 100% valid or truthful. The info in the article is taken almost verbatim from the "alternate versions" portion of the respective pages. I didn't write them myself so don't blame the messenger. Omgpop problems

David, could use your help as an admin and experienced editor per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games#Omgpop_one_big_game_directory, as my trying to explain to an anonymous IP why his edits are guide material, advertising, WP:OR, etc., etc. doesn't seem to be working or are just going completely ignored.
