Your recent GLAM panel talk on Conflict of Interest
Hi,
I was interested in contributing to the conversation on conflict of interest and open science more generally. i have some reservations about the open science model, not ideologically but practically, and i would like to have that conversation in a public forum. the problem is, i can't seem to find the page you were using during the panel discussion. if you could direct me there i would appreciate it.

UCL report
Hi Dan,
There's a discussion going on at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine#Antioxidants_and_cancer that might interest you. Specifically, there's a source that people are discussing, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective. According to University College London, it's "open access". Have you got any idea what the licensing is for this document and whether it's reusable on Wikipedia (etc.)?

- Hi Tom, the licensing terms are stated nowhere (e.g. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/open_access.html ), so we have to assume that it's under classical copyright. I just asked them whether that's correct.

Bug in Wikistats plots fixed
Hi Daniel. I was looking over the plots of page view data on http://toolserver.org/~emw/wikistats/ after your question about licensing and noticed a bug. The plots were showing 0 page views on the first of the month for all months before May 2012. This seems to have been caused by a new-ish bug in the third-party JSON API used to retrieve the data, e.g. http://stats-classic.grok.se/json/en/201203/DNA.
I've patched the bug on the toolserver tool, so that inaccuracy and visual flaw are now gone. If you want to regather any graphs, the tool should be stable by tomorrow morning (I'll be doing some maintenance/feature deployments today). If you happen to see this message and need to regather graphs today, then I can work around your schedule and defer work until you're done -- just leave a note on my talk page. Suggestion for tab system/slide decks
Hi Daniel,
I noticed that a tabbed page on the Outreach wiki (using this header: outreach:Template:Bookshelf/Tab_header/Education/Educators) highlights the current tab with a lighter background. (To see it in action, see here: outreach:Education/Case_Studies) I don't understand the CSS involved, but I think this is a better interface -- it makes it easier for the reader to determine "where am I right now?" In the spirit of your interest in making improvements to the interface, I thought it would be nice to incorporate this into the slide shows you do. -Pete (talk) 22:30, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I had seen such designs a few times and always liked them in principle but hadn't yet seen an implementation that I liked. The functionality looks great; I find the color scheme a little confusing, as it seems that the meaning of light colors vs. dark colors is reversed in the first and second level; but surely colors could be adjusted within your framework, so that's just a minor quibble. Communicate OER
Hi Daniel, we're beginning to ramp up the next phase of Communicate OER. I've moved the page that was previously within WikiProject Education here: WP:Communicate OER. I'd like to begin building it out into a collection of pages in the next few days, and would like to use the header bar format you've built. I copied the contents from my Tufts School of Medicine presentation here: WP:Communicate OER/Header bar, and was about to begin adapting it; but first, I thought I would check with you and see if you have any new suggestions for how to approach this. I am sorry to say, building this kind of thing is very hard for me -- I don't think my brain is well suited to this sort of task, though I do have all the requisite tech skills and can probably get it sorted out in the long run. - Hi Pete,
- Looks OK to me as a starting point, though I would consider avoiding pages like Readership2 that are not findable via the tab header.
- I have played around a bit more with the design, and the results can be seen at User:Daniel Mietchen/Talks/CoSci12/Tab header, User:Daniel Mietchen/Talks/SOL 2012/Tab header and User:Daniel Mietchen/Talks/CERN 2012/Tab header. A related design is at w:sv:user:Axel Pettersson (WMSE)/Presentationer/CMS-introduktion/Start. All of these are for talks, and I think WikiProjects have different communication needs. There are quite a few WikiProjects - for instance WP:PHYSICS - whose page design I like better than that of WP:OPEN. Just a matter of time to get this sorted out. The same applies to my WiR pages on meta - most of them are rarely if ever used, so I have started folding them into WP:OPEN, which gets decent levels of traffic.
- If you run into technical issues or have specific design questions, please let me know, and I will take another look.

Hello Daniel, I made an article Galba schirazensis with quite extensive use of open content texts. You have a special ability get such articles to the Main page. Maybe this is interesting: ...that although Galba schirazensis looks like a Galba truncatula, a vector of fascioliasis, it does not transfer the disease? There's a great group forming -- so far, we have more than 25 people, with a broad range of backgrounds and interests; we have professors, librarians, instructional designers, and more. Members also span a variety of countries and language proficiencies. As we set out to improve articles about openness in education, it looks like we will have a great team to work with. If you haven't looked through the list, I encouraged you to read through it: WP:Communicate OER Team.
Whether or not you're at the Open Education conference this week, we encourage you to engage with us -- we're expecting a flurry of activity as we launch! If you're here, come visit us in room C010 any time; or come to one of our daily 45 minute intro sessions in the Remixathon track in room C215.
Another great way to stay engaged is through the project's "talk page" (aka "discussion page"): WT:COMMOER. Please always feel free to add ideas, questions, etc. at the bottom of that page -- even if you just want to say hi, and go into a little more detail about what you're hoping to work on -- we'd love to hear from you. (I just posted a note at the bottom, exploring the open education article, and seeking input into how we can go about improving it -- take a look!)
If you're just looking to get started, we have a page for that -- WP:Communicate OER Do -- intended to collect ideas of projects we can work on. There's currently a "getting started" recipe for how to post a review of a Wikipedia article; check back for further ideas in the coming days. (And if you're game, feel free to add your own!)

New medical organization

It would be nice if there was a database one could search of only journals (and perhaps filter for pictures being present in the publication) that exclusively publish pictures under licenses compatible for Wikimedia Commons. - Added DirectSqlStore to client so that it can directly access the repository database, and not require creating any tables on the client
- Bug fixing on the client extension, and preparing it for first deployment
- Less edit conflicts due to a smarter conflict detection
- Better recent changes comments on the client
- Clean up on the backend for entity artefacts
- The statement UI enables to create statements and displays them, but has still a few glitches
- The client now accesses the data on the server directly, and the data is not replicated anymore

Hello Daniel Mietchen, Viewing the contents page of the newsletter this month in GLAM I notice there is no German section yet. I noticed you are one of the authors of earlier versions and maybe you can write this time as well about the GLAM related things happening in Germany in the past month. - Deployed new code on wikidata.org with a lot of bug fixes and a new Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel (all changes here)
- http://test2.wikipedia.org now uses Wikidata (click “edit links” at the bottom of the page), and we are working to enable the synchronization of changes to test2 and display links from the repository
- Added wbsetqualifier API module
- Added wbremovequalifiers API module
- New JavaScript wb.Api now used for labels, descriptions, aliases and sitelinks
- Improved Selenium tests and PHPUnit tests
- Selenium tests now independent from ULS
