March 2018 NRHP noms from Long Island

The SHPB is meeting again today, and it is considering four nominations out on the Island that you might be able to photograph before they get listed if you are so inclined, two each in Nassau and Suffolk.

• Hempstead Town Hall, 1 Washington St., Hempstead. We have a serviceable picture of this one already, but maybe we could get in the whole structure under better light?

• Mitchel Air Base and Flight Line. This basically seems to be that part of the Nassau Community College campus adapted from the former Mitchel Air Force Base. It seems from the photos in the nomination that it should be easy to identify the former hangars and such. The map is also helpful.

• Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse, 1725 Brentwood Road, Brentwood as if you couldn't figure that out! Looks like a pretty large and obvious complex. There is a subsection of the article on the order that a picture of this would probably illustrate quite well.

• Wading River Radio Station, 408 North Side Road, (wait for it!) Wading River. On the campus of Camp DeWolfe; I don't know whether that would pose any access issues (probably not at this time of year, but do check first). Interesting story with this one ... it's not some sort of blocky concrete station important in the development of radio, as I had first thought, but rather an architecturally unexceptional red wood-frame house that ... was used by the FBI during the war for double agents to send disinformation to German intelligence! I agree about the need for a non-winter picture, but this looks nice for the time being. The Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse (Brentwood, New York) (a.k.a. St. Joseph's Academy and Convent (Brentwood, New York)) is a site I've seen on Hagstrom's road atlases as well as other maps, but never considered visiting until some of my more recent trips back to Long Island. I certainly regret not dropping by there on my November 2017 trip, and I wasn't entirely sure it was still around. Good to know anyhow. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 19:57, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities. I expanded an article you tagged as needing expansion from its French counterpart

DanTD, in July of 2015, you marked the article on the 47th Station on the Chicago "L"'s Green Line as needing expansion with text translated from its corresponding article in the French Wikipedia. Well, late last Tuesday, I took the liberty of expanding the English version of the article using the text translated from its French counterpart. I have to admit, though, the French version of the "47th station (CTA Green Line)" article looks like it was expanded using text translated from an English-language Wikipedia article, but that's not the case. USSTATION

I highly advise you cease your nonsensical rants about WP:USSTATION. It has been policy since 2014; attempting to undermine it just because you don't like it is disruptive and in bad faith. You know very well that the matter is settled, and that you're not going to convince anyone. (Hell, part of the reason I stopped complaining about it was because I didn't wish to be associated with your childish reactions, and as soon as I actually gave it a chance I rather liked it.) I'm not sure what you're trying to do with edits like this, but they waste editors' time and don't contribute to the project. If I see one more disruptive complaint from you - edit summary, talk page rant, whatever - then I will go to AN/I to seek a topic ban (you being banned from complaining about the policy) so that the rest of us can have useful discussions about station naming without you interfering. Oh my God! I can not believe you're claiming my complaints about the WP:USSTATION policies are "nonsensical!" So you basically go along with their foolish policies because you don't like my tone! "Useful discussions?" I wish there were useful discussions, instead of simply towing the line. This isn't about whether the policy is right or wrong. That's what you don't get. This is about your disruptive behavior. You derail every single discussion about station naming to argue a point that you and only you believe. That is contrary to any sort of collaboration. No, this is about whether the policy is right or wrong. And there was nothing wrong with my previous statement so if you're going to raise a stink over that, I'm going to challenge you on your accusations. Evidently the problem isn't that I'm disruptive, but that you don't seem to like the fact that I object to any of this. And if the administrators feel it's okay that you want to submit an AN/I report over this, it only proves my previous edit summary was right. Do you want to prove me wrong? Then just let me finish whatever sandboxes I've been working on (or at least find someone to take them over), let me delete any of the ones I haven't started, and I'll leave the project voluntarily. @Pi.1415926535: USSTATION is a guideline, not policy. DanTD is entitled to oppose it. That said, in the diff you provided, DanTD does have a point that a legitimate complaint that there can be phonetic confusion.

@DanTD: I understand and sympathize that this isn't the best solution, especially since so many steps get dropped along the way (e.g. creating appropriate redirects to the new pages). In the case of NYC transportation, this is especially complicated. However, calling discussions "bogus" isn't the right way to go about it. Although your comment itself isn't disruptive, it is on the borderline, so I suggest you tone down your comments a bit. epicgenius (talk) 17:03, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

A place to photograph

I have a place to add to your Long Island/NRHP photo get list. Fort Massapeag Archeological Site was (a) address restricted in the NRHP list for Oyster Bay, and (b) incorrectly geolocated in the article and the NHL list for New York. I have corrected the geolocation -- the site is in Sunset Park, Massapequa, and there is (or was, it's still visible in Google Street View here) a sign. Magic♪piano 22:09, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
