Re: Track map imagery

I recently finished JTWC tracks for 2006 and 2007. All of 2005's are still out of date, and I'm working on those when I can.

I can really only help with the track map program if you are wanting to run it under Mac OS X. I first installed MacPort and then I installed all the required packages (Gettext, etc.) using that. MacPort may need some other installations like X11 and other Apple stuff it tell you, but that's pretty easy to do. Once you have those you can install the track map program exactly as the instructions tell you. Potapych (talk) 02:07, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Storm of the month

Hurricane Paloma

Hurricane Paloma
Hurricane Paloma was the second most powerful November hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin, behind Hurricane Lenny in 1999. It was the third and final major hurricane to hit Cuba in 2008, being the first time that three major hurricanes have struck Cuba in one season. It also marked the first time that at least one major hurricane formed in every month of the hurricane season from July to November, with only June not having a major hurricane this season.

Hurricane Paloma was also the last Tropical Depression of the 2008 season, and caused at least $1.4 billion in damage and was responsible for at least one direct death.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• Eastern Pacific Ocean– Tropical Storm Polo was the only Tropical Storm to form during November and December.

• Western Pacific Ocean – There were five tropical depressions during the last two months of the 2008 Pacific typhoon season. Though only four of them developed into Tropical storms with only Dolphin becoming a Typhoon.

• North Indian– There were three Tropical Depressions during the last two months of the 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, however there were only two that officially became Tropical Storms being named Khai-Muk and Nisha.

• South Indian– Cyclone Bernard was the first cyclone of the year to move into the Australian Region from the Southwest Indian Ocean. Forming on early on November 19 it quickly intensified into a Moderate Tropical Storm the next day, however as it moved westward it weakened into a Tropical Depression and moved into Australia's Bureau of Meteorology's area of responsibility and dissipated later on November 21.

• Australian - There were four tropical lows during November and December with Tropical Low ex Bernard moving into the Australian Region from the South-West Indian Ocean. Two of the Lows developed into Tropical Cyclones being named Anika and Billy respectively. Anika intensified into a category two cyclone whilst Cyclone Billy became a Severe Tropical Cyclone after it had affected Northern Australia.

• The 2008–09 South Pacific cyclone season got off to an slow start during November and December, with three Tropical Disturbances forming during December. Only one of the tropical disturbances developed into a tropical depression.

Project News
During the last two months there have been several important discussions of which some are still seeking contributions from members. These include discussions about:

Project Importance - Is it better to rate Storm Importance by basin or by overall importance? - There seems to be a consensus to rate storm importance on a case by case basis, though there still needs to be a bit more discussion on this matter.

Prominent units within TC articles: Imperial or SI? - Which should be the prominent unit outside the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Basins, Knots or MPH? Generally people think that Knots should not be used except in the general science articles and infoboxes.

ACE - Where and how, should it be used? - We have decided that it should not be used outside the Atlantic or the Eastern Pacific hurricane Seasons. A debate is still ongoing with a view too get rid of it all together.

JMA Tropical Depressions Should we include them with the season articles or not? - The general consensus so far seems to be that we should include them in the season articles though this debate is still ongoing.

We discovered during December that the Australian Bureau of Meteorology have started to designate the Tropical Lows that form within their region with letter U. It is unclear whether either TCWC Jakarta or TCWC Port Moresby assign any designations to lows that form within their Area of Responsibility.

Hurricane Allen class

The original reference from NHC contains no information on Mexican impact of Allen, although it was probably significant in the northeastern most section of the Yucatan peninsula and mainland Mexico. Are we holding these articles to higher standards than original sources would provide? Even if we do, C class allows for missing sections within articles. Cool. I've been noticing over the past several months that people would rather pass over the C and B class options, going straight from Start to GA nomination. I've noticed this has been a personal preference of a couple of the members of the project, and it has allowed me to re-read the class structure within wikipedia. It doesn't seem like we use C class as often as we should as a project. You're right of course, it is minor, but it does impact the wikiwork score of the project. 1998 PTS

It does not appear I've placed any information concerning that season online. I'll take a look at the data this coming week and see if this is a problem to resolve. Why was my article tagged for speedy?

It did not even remotely fall under G4. The article was not "substantially similar" to the its version before it was redirected. There was no deletion discussion involved whatsoever. Why? Jonathan321 (talk) 20:13, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry that it was incorrectly referenced. I was soon going to correctly reference it, as it was midnight when I created the article. Similar to your experience with deletion, I do not have much experience in article creation (except for this article). I wouldn't call the article "extraordinarily short". Many, many stubs are a mere sentence, and they are kept. I will probably work on it some more, but I would appreciate it if you would restore it, as I feel rather uncomfortable doing it myself. The template is not broken. The template automatically conserves the number of significant figures. If you want a different level of precision, add |sigfig=# to the end of the template ("#" being the number of significant figures you would like). I have restored the template to February 2009 tornado outbreak using this trick. Also, some of the figures you changed are too precise (for instance, when you say "winds near 70 miles per hour", the conversion should be 110 km/h, not 112 km/h, since you're dealing with approximate figures. Do NOT delete these pages OR merge them

I worked hard on these pages and if it's so important, find references yourself. (I couldn't find a huge amount of information on those storms, they were almost twenty years ago, that's why the paragraph was not extremely long) besides, there are other short pages on Wikipedia, RIGHT? I also put the new articles there so that the info on those storms wasn't just a couple vague "descriptive" sentences, and that reference at the bottom of the pages leads to a page for NHC info on those two storms(best track,strength data,etc.), so there aren't ANY lack of sufficient references. By the way, I'm about fifteen years old, so if you want to criticize it,or delete my profile, or block me from editing (because I'm not "Old" enough to be as smart as you adults).(Because you adults think all people my age are just KIDS!!), besides, they were my first articles, so I don't have as much "Experience" as you adults who think they own Wikipedia!!Hurricanekiller1994 (talk) 22:12, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

If you are sixteen, how did you learn so much about Wikipedia? When did you start learning about writing articles on Wikipedia? (I thought all people on here were adults!)I guess I'm not the only "younger" person on here after all.
