Catching vandals edit

Hi, Cowman - thanks for the message. Basically, when I'm bored (which is quite often at work...) I just go to the "Recent Changes" page. Anything near the top that's been edited by an IP address rather than a registered user gets checked.

I'd like to do proper revocation, but I think you have to be some kind of admin to do that. Likewise putting the formal "warning" messages up and being able to block people.

Call me Mr Uppity, but I also think that people shouldn't be able to edit pages if they're not logged into a traceable account. It'd make it a lot easier to block people and a lot fairer on those who use public machines and therefore share IP addresses with the idiot minority.

Unfortunately, doing this on every page would severely harm the idea of a 'free' encyclopedia, making it more difficult for an innocent anonymous user to edit a problem they see. Cowman 21:19, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Latino edits edit

Good edits, Cowman109, but the anon will be reverting them soon enough; he's been doing it for weeks now. Jayjg (talk) 21:15, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why thank you, but if they persist it's a simple matter of getting an admin to assist us with the situation. Cowman 21:19, 16 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! edit

Hi Cowman109,

Thank you very much for your support on my RfA. I was both surprised and delighted about the amount of support votes and all the kind words! If I can ever help with anything or if you have any comments about my actions as an admin, please let me know! Regards, JoanneB 14:46, 21 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

Stub sorting edit

Hey there, Stub sorting is generally a case of doing a find (in your browser) on the list of stub types and then working from what you find. The vast majority of pages fit into some cateogry, and the ones that don't usually fit AFD :) If you just want to keep tagging {{stub}} then by all means do; we'll usually move it over before long :) Stifle 01:00, 27 November 2005 (UTC)Reply

hey cowman edit

you might want to have a talk with royboycrashfan, seeing that your suggestions to him have made him overeager in his reversions of peoples work, which is not a great contribution to the site in itself. Stagnancy is not progress, and keeping everything the same keeps wikipedia from growing.

Thanks. S0z0 05:33, 17 December 2005 (UTC)s0z0Reply

I'll look into it, thank you. CowmanTalk 14:20, 17 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Don't listen to this guy. He's a vandal and he knows it, but he continually denies it and keeps saying I'm reverting "useful" edits. I only made a mistake or two (and I'm still fairly new here), but he treats it like a thousand. He's annoyed me with all his bitching and whining, so someone should have a word with him, not me. Royboycrashfan 06:36, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I noticed his history after I posted that comment on your user page. Do keep up the good work, though - don't let him or me discourage you. CowmanTalk 20:01, 19 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Gah! Requesting unblock, Curps. edit

I tried to revert the edits of the vandal changing the main page article, and accidentally reverted a reverting and apparently was autoblocked. Have issue coming in contact with Curps do to Wiki mysteriously logging me off every time I attempt to e-mail him. Hello? CowmanTalk 01:07, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I have undone your block, as it is clear (to me) that you aren't part of the pattern of vandalism on that page. Be careful to make sure you are reverting to the good guys whenever possible! (ESkog)(Talk) 01:09, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Ah, thanks. Was a terrible mistake. Tried to revert too fast without double checking I was reverting to the right thing, and as someone else had reverted before that it went back, heh. Thanks again! CowmanTalk 01:10, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Hm, I appear to still be blocked. Perhaps Curps has an automatic re-blocking mechanism in place? CowmanTalk 01:12, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
    • Try it now - sometimes blocks get a bit sticky. I just blocked you for one second, which should reset the process... (ESkog)(Talk) 01:13, 10 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thoughts about Newton South... edit

Newton South is a different from Newton North as it is from Brookline High. Therefore, I would not aggregate information (alumni, etc.) on the "Newton" page... ...also, since there is a dire need for alumni to step forward and organize their classes at South, I would propose (ask) that you return the list..—Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.210.208 (talkcontribs)

Hi there! Thanks for commenting on the situation. I have copied what you said to the Newton South Talk Page. CowmanTalk 14:18, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mediation Case: List of Indian Americans edit

You have indicated that you are willing to accept an assignment as a mediator. I have assigned this case to you. If you don't want to take the case on, just say so at the bottom of the request, delegate it to someone else and update the case list accordingly. Before you begin the mediation please read the suggestions for mediators. You can also review earlier mediation cases to get an understanding for possible procedures.

3rr edit

Hi. I removed your 3RR report. It wasn't really close to the theshold. You need (a) 4R in 24h or (b) a very long string of near misses William M. Connolley 18:40, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alright, thanks anyway. Cowman109Talk 18:41, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Environmental Fanatic. edit

Cowman,

I need help with a dispute over at the Earth Day page. I'm close to computer illiterate so the conflict resolution pages weren't much help. An individual who uses "earth" as a screen name is deleting facts that he doesn't like and adding comments about "rightists muttering about communist plots." He's also adding insulting paragraphs under the "miscellaneous" heading and elsewhere. He is an ideologue and refuses to work with others towards a resolution. He called in a friend as a third party and his friend suggested that someting that was already cited and sourced be cited and sourced(?) He then proceeded to write in some rants about "rightists. The guy is out of control.

I don't know if you can help, because this guy is a fanatic, but anything you can do would be much appreciated. I'm not interested in going back and forth with this guy any more.

Thanks, Jeff Bargholz.

Second opinion on mediation case edit

copied: Hello, I recently looked at the case Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2006-04-22 SkyTran/UniModal uncooperative admin and found it to be an argument that has gone through official channels and appears to be out of Mediation Cabal control. I'd just like your second opinion just in case there's something I'm missing here. Thanks Cowman109Talk 19:49, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

The official process in question was an article for deletion (AfD) discussion. An AfD discussion can become a heated debate sometimes and may require mediation. There is no reason to reject the case because of the AfD; the AfD is not part of any dispute resolution. --Fasten 06:51, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
The point of mediation is to help people find a consensus when they don't seem to be able to find that without the help of an impartial third party, or only with great difficulties. When the dispute concerns the interpretation of policies (in this case the AfD rules) the mediator can still help people to find agreement where the policies leave enough freedom for debate. Administrators should only enforce policies where policies are largely unambiguous so this may not be a case that can easily be settled by administrators by pointing out official rules. Of course any administrator can mediate the conflict but so can anybody else, including the Mediation Cabal. --Fasten 18:28, 27 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

MBB/DASA edit

There's nothing suspicious about the edit. It's actually correct, DASA was only formed in 1989 and subsumed MBB. MBB is therefore responsible for the vast majority of German Tornado development (though not all production). Still I don't see anything wrong with saying DASA was the German member of the consortium, after all you don't want to complicate an intro. Regards --Mark83 19:21, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ah, alright, thanks. The user's edit history was suspicious, as on the Osama bin Laden article the user changed the title of a portrait from Osama to George W. Bush. When I looked at the DASA and MBB pages, I found only the DASA page had mention of the Panavia Tornado. I'll change it back to MBB then. Cowman109Talk 19:35, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
