Yet another question

Checking-in on Portal:Rhode Island, I can't get the infobox in the article to stop being transcluded into the portal, after tweaking the transclude lead template in various ways. @Northamerica1000: I no longer maintain Module:Excerpt following protection changes. However, the problem goes away if the {{#expr:...}} in Rhode Island's infobox, which calculates water area, is replaced by a simple number. It would have taken me an hour or more to figure all of that out, having to research everything, etc. I don't work in the module area at all, but if you were to obtain template editor rights, that would enable you to continue working on them, if you still want to. We already have one group trying to internationalise the module while another deploys it in article space, and both have had a template editor demoted in the last few days. Tempting as it is to reclaim ownership, another editor applying to pull the software in a third direction might be the last thing they need right now. Certes (talk) 20:54, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Reusability. Most of the code is common to portals and articles, and we'd have to duplicate it and maintain multiple versions. Using a single module makes sense because each use case can benefit from the others' improvements. I can still suggest fixes and enhancements, and fill in the edit request forms. However, that was the least appealing part of programming when I was being paid for it, and I'm not keen to take the task on as a volunteer. The module is fit for the purposes it was designed for, so perhaps it's time to say that the portal software is complete. If anyone wants to adapt it for use elsewhere, good luck to them, though we do ask that they not break the portal functionality. Certes (talk) 10:35, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Certes! It seems that the ethnic SPA is totally unwilling to contribute to WP in a constructive and collaborative manner. Their edit history is a pathetic trail of disruption, especially the page moves. Hi Yomeo. I removed a link to an image which no longer exists. It was deleted from Wikimedia Commons after this request with the explanation Small size, no metadata, unlikely to be own work of uploader as claimed. I have not reviewed the images but they look very suitable if Wikipedia is allowed to use them. If you own the copyright on these pictures, or if they are in the public domain, you may want to ask for them to be restored via Commons:Undeletion requests. Certes (talk) 14:10, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

@Dawood.CX: I see that you and the other topic specialists such as Dawood.XV have done a lot of work on expanding Zameen.com. Perhaps you could produce similar articles for other companies in the sector and link them from {{Real estate in Pakistan}}, to give a broader overview of real estate portals in Pakistan rather than limiting it to one company? I don't know the industry but a quick search brings up Earthpk, Graana, Ilaan, Jagan, Pakistan Real Estate and Real Property along with Zameen. Certes (talk) 09:37, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

It's a hit! That's looking a lot better, and more importantly will stay looking good as you've pre-empted the usual embarrassments such as excerpts which begin "Elvis Dead is a singer". Thanks again for continuing with the good work. Ideally most portals need a subject expert, and I've generally moved back to disambiguation work and on to other areas where a gnome seems to be badly needed, but I am keeping an eye open for queries about the module.

MfDs seem to have died down but I have noticed a new tendency to propose "archiving" without defining it precisely. Deletion should not be used for archiving a page, but there may be some confusion over that policy. Certes (talk) 10:41, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

The idea for now is to improve portals such as this so that they 1) provide current, up to date information, which is solved by using transclusion templates, 2) Revive them a bit, remove outdated content, adding new content, etc. Oftentimes, more FA- and GA-class articles are available then were around when the portals were created. 3) provide readers that check them out with a functional medium to navigate content, 4) continue improving them periodically to keep content fresh. I feel that the transclusion templates that include lists of articles is functional to at least invite other users to edit, particularly when compared to the subpage system. @Narky Blert: Thank you for sorting these out and for spotting one of my mistakes. Your comments were useful: I've fixed [[marshe]]s and Voss in non-taxon articles. I'm currently working through User:Certes/misdirected links#Surnames: 2400 fixes for 70 different surnames so far. I estimate that there are about 10,000 left. I'd come across the Rothschild problem before, during our 2019 exercise. It's uncommon for there to be two near-contemporary independent naturalist relatives with the same interests. Precisely one hit in my search identified the original paper, and then it was easy: Biodiversity Heritage Library is a wonderful resource. I think I discovered it while drafting Carlo Antonio Fornasini, which made an unexpected call on my Grade 2 Latin O-Level, and of whose pageview analysis I am quirkily proud.

Bad links

Hello. Java Rockin'land has hundreds of artists/bands linked, most are red and many of the bluelinks go to the wrong place as a result of mass-indiscriminate=linking. I was thinking it may be best to just unlink them all. Thoughts? MB 22:35, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

@MB: I've come across a few of these and they're awkward. If you use Popups or similar, you could hover over the links and vet them quickly. Links to Bite, Clover, etc. are clearly unhelpful but ideally we should keep /rif, Burgerkill, etc. That leaves the redlinks: it's a close call as to whether to unlink those to avoid problems later or leave them red in the hope that someone will write the missing article. Theoretically, a diligent editor would also check whether Bite (disambiguation) lists an Indonesian band. (Spoiler: it doesn't.) Certes (talk) 22:58, 21 June 2020 (UTC)

I forgot that the "unlink" works only on dabs links, and not normal wikilinks. I went through manually and removed about 30 links (mostly made them red by adding (band) disambiguators. There were a couple of Indonesian bands out there hiding! This led me to some missing dab pages. Betrayer is a redirect to Betrayal. Betrayer (video game), Betrayer (band), and The Betrayer are all candidates for Betrayer (disambiguation). Assuming the redirect stays as the PT, do we change the hatnote there to

For other uses, see Betrayal (disambiguation) and Betrayer (disambiguation).

Another weird case is Noxa which redirects to Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate-induced protein 1. There is also Noxa (band). If you search on Noxa, you get to the protein. A hatnote there:

would make sense if you got there by redirect after typing Noxa but would be confusing if you got there another way. What should I do here? A two-item dab page? MB 23:05, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

@MB: Thanks for improving the article. Betrayer should probably get a dab, though it has few incoming links and all mean "traitor" except Johan Liiva which should be a redlink. Pragmatically, we could do as you suggest with the hatnote; technically we should add a separate {{redirect}} as I've done for Speak Up and Noxa. @Vmavanti: Most of them work if you go via https://69.142.160.183/~dispenser/... rather than dispenser.info.tm. http: usually won't work as it redirects you to https: for security reasons but, in doing so, redirects you to the broken domain too. redirect/dab

Can you advise on Riverside Mall. I created this redirect for a mall in Utica, NY that does not have an article but was mentioned in an article on its developer.

Today, the page was turned into a pseudo-dab. The new entry is a mall in Riverside, California that doesn't go by that name - so I don't think it's a valid dab. It needs to be reverted or turned into an actual dab page. MB 03:52, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

It's probably a dab. The only incoming link was meant for a third mall in Nelspruit, South Africa, which also has no article. I've had a hack at the page and resolved the link, but it's still not our best or most important dab. Certes (talk) 09:31, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

G14 does not support deletion of this dab but has some relevant advice: If a disambiguation page links to only one article and does not end in (disambiguation), it should be changed to a redirect. @Shhhnotsoloud: What I created was a redirect to an existing dab at the base name. The primary topic has since been restored to the base name, overwriting the dab and temporarily leaving the (disambiguation) redirect targetting one article. WilyD and I have recreated the dab. Template : Stafford-Manchester line RDT

As both Wedgwood and Barlaston stations are in their current "state of limbo", neither officially closed but not served by rail services, is there a different type of station icon that can be placed against both these two stations on the line template, as it looks if the closed station icon has been applied in both cases.

@Xenophon Philosopher: The stations use pHST with the "p" for "passed" prefix (c:BSicon/Catalogue#Naming logic, third table). That's described as Express (do they mean that expresses don't call?) but can also be used for custom purposes, as in this example for "set down only". I can't think of anything better, but I'm only an occasional diagram editor and the RDT regulars may be more helpful. Certes (talk) 09:21, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

Not just expresses do not call, no train services at all call, but the two stations have currently not been through a formal closure procedure.

@Xenophon Philosopher: As you say, the facade is that the stations are officially open; it's just that all services happen to be replacement buses. Is there an exact equivalent elsewhere? All the cases I can think of are either formally closed or have a token service with an actual train. Although neither is an exact match, I think the stations are metaphorically somewhere between Redcar British Steel and Teesside Airport, which both use pHST, so that is probably the least bad option. dab question

This one is simple. In Reynolds, there is Reynolds, California (disambiguation). Under that are two locations from the Calif. dab page, which actually has a third.

Is it better to remove the sub-bullets and change it to "Reynolds, California (disambiguation), several locations in California" so this can never be wrong again, or just add the third place here (it seems wrong to have the same "list" in two places making double work to update). @MB: We need Reynolds, California and its (disambiguation) redirect, and it looks good except that I would remove the redlink which is not mentioned in Tulare County, California or elsewhere. As there are only two entries, I'd repeat them in the main list and not link to the California dab: one more line to save readers a click is good value. If there were several entries then I'd only link the dab, and that's not actually wrong here either. Another option is to transclude text from the California dab, but that's non-standard and perhaps unnecessarily complex. Others at WT:D might have differing opinions. I hadn't noticed the redlink - that changes everything. The page was so small, I only viewed it as a pop-up window where the link is blue. My first preference is to turn it blue by mentioning it somewhere, but beyond GNIS saying it was on a 1928 map, I can't find anything. It was probably just a ranch or mine. In Pitsford School, I came across the splendidly-named Sir Hereward Wake MC DL. The first postnominal looked implausible, so I WP:BOLDly amended the link. That last one was marked by an asterisk not the word, but it set me a-thinking. On checking the links-in, I discovered a gallant drunk, an unexpected fact about Pakistani lawyers, that the sheriffs of London present petitions at the Bar of the House of Commons, and even one bar which (among other things) once housed a royal library, once had its own imam, and today hosts football matches, is on a major road network and has a 46MW wind farm. I also found three buildings, two more songs, a bank, a cycle race and a fashion brand. I'm working through widely linked SIAs, improving links that should be more specific. (For example, Ministry of Defence usually refers to one nation's efforts.) I checked newspaper SIAs 18 months ago: I fixed 34 bad links to The Mercury and am disappointed that so many more have appeared since. At least it's better than The Express, which until last year was about an unremarkable sports film. I'm not sure that Mercury is the best target though: The Mercury rarely refers to the planet, element or deity. Perhaps List of newspapers named Mercury should be a dab called The Mercury, as we did with The Telegraph last year following this discussion. Certes (talk) 19:40, 4 October 2020 (UTC)

I found 39 to go with the 34 you found last year, and 1 to Mercury (newspaper). (That was how I learned of {{siadn}} and Category:All set index articles with links needing disambiguation. I plan to give it a seeing-to once I've dealt with the couple of hundred ambiguous johns in DPwL.)

IMO the List contains far too many WP:PTMs for it to be a DAB page. It also has unlinked entries, which are OK in a SIA but not a DAB. My current idea is to add a new Newspapers section at Mercury#Literature, duplicate the 3 or 4 full matches from the List into there (and move the List there from see-also), and retarget The Mercury and Mercury (newspaper) at that. Most editors will be looking for the Hobart paper, and that would make it easy to find. Thoughts?

That sounds like a reasonable compromise. Over 90% of my fixes were for Hobart. Set indices on newspapers was the list I worked through. Star (newspaper) now claims to be both a SIA and a dab, which is inconsistent but handy as incoming links get flagged. The older links in that cat are brutal, though I was lucky enough to find a handful where the problem had been solved but the tag not removed. Even searching in Cyrillic got me nowhere on one of them; but I did manage to find that HMS Albatross was in fact USS Albatross (easy mistake, which anyone could make). Most links to Council of State were easily fixed, but the Second Polish Republic followed the Council of State (Kingdom of Poland) and pre-dated the Polish Council of State. I considered the Provisional Council of State but that disbanded the previous year. It may just be a short-lived and barely notable council of state with no specific article. Well done! My aim was to maximise improvement per hour by addressing obvious errors in bulk and marking those I couldn't fix quickly for expert attention. Except for the easy answers I've overlooked, they're all tricky cases. There's also an intermediate class where I did nothing. For example, I just skipped someone who worked in the Palau Ministry of Finance: we have no article on that particular department, so the link continues to tell the reader what a finance ministry is. Spanish WP had the same mistake, most likely copied from English WP. Much like you, I suspect, my ability to be arsed depends on numerous factors, including the quality and importance of the article, and the time of day. For example, the needle on my arsednessometer hit zero earlier today with the link to Risk in Amitabh Bhattacharjee. Hey, it's blue, innit? The versatile Bhattacharjee also performed in a town, two singers and a cosmic force. I know little about Indian cinema but it can often be a good source of bad links. Checking games is a helpful suggestion which I'll look into. Monopoly came up in my general search for mislink magnets (51 errors) but I've not looked at Risk or others yet. Yours is a new project. I'm not surprised it's turning up difficult-but-soluble problems. I found the same when I first began to cycle through DPwL. (I remember one, relating to a palace owned by the Bishop of Breslau (as the place then was). None of the articles on the Czech, English, German and Polish DAB pages could resolve it. I managed it by creative googling; similar but not identical spelling, and we had an article; a very handsome castle. Looking at that, I saw that it had belonged to the lord of someplace-or-other - at the opposite side of Poland, which seemed implausible. Yet more creative googling, and I may have been the only person then alive to know who had handed the castle over and why. (A C14 princeling decided to absorb the territory of a small and feeble neighbour. Unfortunately, the neighbour had large and irascible mates. The bishop agreed to intercede, leaving the aggressor with most of his original possessions - for a price.))

Indian articles fill me with dread. One PTOPIC you might care to look at is Bhairavi. If any bad links are music-related, I know who you might ask - see User talk:ShubhanTelang#Help requested.

@Northamerica1000: The article whose excerpt appears is now excluded from the list. The relevant code is table.remove(candidates, candidateKey) -- candidate processed, which appeared in a different form with this update. As you may remember, Module:Excerpt was template-editor protected in February before being enhanced with several non-portal functions. At that time, I stopped watching changes to the module, as I no longer felt able to help. That works, at least for the random subset of images that came up for me. Module:Portal image banner encloses the gallery in a div with one margin-top: style, which may be the best we can do. @5illian: As the video explains, zero to the power of anything is zero. This includes 0 × 0 or 0², which is never 1 or –1 but always 0. The video also mentions that division by zero is undefined, and that the expression 0⁰ can be confusing, but neither of those problems is relevant to Square number. @5illian: A bit of geometry may help. 0 × 0 or 0² is the area of a square with sides of zero length. It clearly has an area of zero, not 1 (in what units?) and certainly not –1. New dab

Temple Block had been a redirect to Temple Square for 10+ years. It is now a dab with two (Temple Block)s and two (Temple Square)s. Pageviews show the church complex in Salt Lake City (Temple Square) gets 10x the views of the other articles so it would be a PT if it had the same name. But block ≠ square. Googling "Temple block" shows the instrument is most likely what this means. The instrument is at Temple block with lowercase "b" (and it's actually another redirect to wooden fish).

I don't think this needs to be a dab. Temple Square and Temple Square station don't need to be disambiguated. Temple Block (Los Angeles) and Temple block don't need disambiguation either (both are redirects anyway). There is a small chance someone searching WP for Temple Block may be looking for Temple Square. I think this should all be handled with hatnotes. I was going to start a discussion to get other opinions, but I'm not even sure where to do that. It can't be at RFD since Temple Block is no longer a redirect. Maybe RM, since moving Temple Block (Los Angeles) to Temple Block could be a solution. Or should I just start a discussion on the Temple Block TP suggesting to un-dab the page and asking for input at the dab project TP.

What is the reader who types in "Temple Block" seeking? Probably Temple Block (Los Angeles): although a subtopic, it's the only subject on Wikipedia with that exact title. Possibly Temple Square: although not known by that name, it is a "temple block", so we should provide a route to there from the destination of "Temple block" and perhaps "Temple Block". Possibly Chinese temple block: not everyone is fastidious about capitalisation. Certainly not Temple Square station; that doesn't mention "block" and is probably never known as "Temple Block". Wooden fish has more incoming links than the rest put together but most of those links have nothing to do with "temple block", let alone "Temple Block". Incoming links for the current dab are LA 1:1 SLC. Search has a clear majority for LA, with the odd mention of SLC and others.

In the absence of history, I'd have made "Temple Block" a straight {{R to section}} to Victorian Downtown Los Angeles#Temple Block per WP:DIFFCAPS and added a hatnote. However, changing target from one article to another breaks incoming external links, so we should consider keeping the dab (with the station removed).

"Temple block" has a marginal PT of Wooden fish, but it needs a {{redirect}} hatnote leading to wherever Temple Block goes. Certes (talk) 11:02, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Editing the "Teeside" typo

Hi, Yesterday morning I started correcting the error of writing "Teeside" for "Teesside" in all article pages where the search box could find it. Suddenly I noticed that this correction was being applied to many pages automatically just before I could do so. Eventually I worked out that you were doing this using WP:JWB. That was fine by me and thank you.

Another similar need for correction is the use of "Adbul" for "Abdul". I could just carry on and correct these by hand, but it's temptng to try WP:JWB, which I've never used before. The documentation looks a bit forbidding. Have you any advice? SamuelTheGhost (talk) 19:40, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

@SamuelTheGhost: When a typo fix appears on my watchlist I usually have a look for similar cases. Only one of the pages you fixed was on my watchlist, and I didn't realise that you were already fixing others. The first thing is to ask for authorisation; see WP:AWB/CP#Guide. Approval should be a formality for someone with your record. Once your name is on the list, follow the simple instructions at User:Joeytje50/JWB. The same authorisation lets you use WP:AWB, a more powerful but more complicated alternative to JWB. A knowledge of regular expressions will help you get the best out of JWB or AWB but is not essential. If Adbul is consistently a typo for Abdul, you could consider adding it to the automatically fixed typo list at WP:AWB/T (long page) or suggesting it on its talk page. @SamuelTheGhost: JWB needs a list of pages to edit (bottom left). Search results can be tricky to transfer. I've installed User:The Transhumanist/SearchSuite.js, which adds a link in the left sidebar to hide found text leaving only the titles, which can be copied and pasted into JWB as a block. You still need to remove annotations such as "(redirect from Foo)". AWB has a built-in search. Certes (talk) 15:18, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello Certes,

I hope that you are well.

I am new to the editing of Wiki Pages and spotted that you had recently done some editing in (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Trains#UK_station_edits). I wondered if I might be able to highlight something with you for editing by a member of WikiProject Trains as I am not entirely confident with how to do it (I'm learning :) )

On the page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrington_West_railway_station), the station is said to have opened on 16th December 2019. This is incorrect. The page (https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/WAW/details.html) is being cited for this, however, as the Retail Supervisor who was on shift here the day we actually opened, Sunday 15th December 2019, I know that the information being displayed is currently incorrect.

Hopefully one of the users of WikiProject Trains will be able to see to this at some point.

Most sources talk about the official opening on Monday. The only concrete source I can find for trains quietly starting to call the previous day is [2]. You could cite [3], [4] or [5], but all are predictions rather than reports. This report [6] mentions a Sunday train and strongly implies that it ran on 15 December without explicitly stating a date. Dabs

Hi Certes -- Thanks for that edit to Jonathan Dunsby; I used to check all links for dabs religiously but recently I've been relying on the orange-colour-coding gizmo; clearly it only works for certain dabs and not for others! @Espresso Addict: The orange gizmo still works but Schoenberg isn't a dab. The primary topic, which hardly any articles mention and no one ever links to, is the surname. You're far from being the only one who finds that so unlikely that they didn't even check for it. In my recent purge of widely linked surname pages, Schoenberg came second with 95 links (almost all for Arnold), second only to Zunz. Indeed, burgers was idiotic, even though variants on Burger are a common surname (presumably meaning ~citizen), it would relatively rarely be pluralised in that meaning (I naively type, but on clicking find actually there are several... the wonders of Wikipedia :)). I would like to re edit it to only family Lycaenidae with out mentioning the common name Blues, because park includes the butterflies of all other subfamilies, of the family Lycaenidae. Reversion to Adventure game

Short descriptions appear alongside the title and don't need to repeat anything that the title conveys, but sometimes there really isn't a sensible phrase which avoids duplication. "Video genre" doesn't work because the topic is a type of game rather than a type of video. If you can find a better wording, please go for it! Certes (talk) 18:51, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

We can label all types of video games as "Video game genre", and we probably should. The article title, which appears alongside, tells the reader which of those genres the article describes. It's standard practice. For example, Ficus (gastropod) has short description "Genus of sea snails", and so do dozens of similar articles. I was about to point you towards the current discussion at Wikipedia talk:Short description, but I see you've already contributed. What we need to distinguish from is other articles with similar titles but different topics, such as Adventure board game and TV show The Adventure Game. It's a bit like the disambiguation page entry, which reads Adventure game, a computer game genre rather than Adventure game, the adventure computer game genre. @Robertch28: The concern is that the entry is not really about the number 32. Lots of things happened 32 years ago. Listing them all on 32 or 32 (number) would create clutter which obscures the more relevant entries. It would also create a duty to move them all to 33 on the appropriate dates and to 34 the year after, etc. If you disagree, please raise the matter in a new section on Talk:32 (number), and let's see if there is a consensus to add such entries. Revert of my edit.

I understand why my edit was reverted. However, when I type "2^31" on the search bar (desktop, not sure about mobile), the system completely ignores the ^ for some reason. This is not the case for "2^31-1". Is it just me? Thanks for the message. The search bar shows a list of article titles (and redirects) similar to the term you type in. For 2^31-1, there is a redirect with that title, so it's shown first in bold. Having shown any exact match, the search algorithm then shows near misses. It seems to give letters and digits more weight than punctuation. (Readers may well type a space where Wikipedia uses a comma but are less likely to use a P where the title has a Q.) So 2311 El Leoncito appears second but 2^61-1 only tenth. (Exact results will vary from time to time but the principle holds.) Wikipedia has no article on 2^31, nor a redirect, because the obvious target 2,147,483,648 has no article. The most relevant article is 2,147,483,647 and a redirect to it, 2^31-1, comes up as the first search suggestion when I type 2^31, with 231 in ninth place. Sorry, I don't read Meitei (or even have the fonts to display it properly). All I can suggest is that you replace "Portal:Arts" etc. by the names of actual portals which exist on that Wikipedia. Big idea

Hi Certes: I and others use {{Transclude files as random slideshow}} to present slideshows of general images in portals, and it works fine. The big idea is whether or not there would be a way in Lua to include an article link with each image. For example, if the template pulls images from three different articles, would there be a way to automate it to include a "Read more" link (in bold, like other such links in portals) at the bottom-right of the template, with the correct article links being displayed relative to the article where the image is transcluded from? This would vastly improve portals, in part because some images do not include the article's title in them. North America¹⁰⁰⁰ 12:28, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@Northamerica1000: I've prototyped that at Module:Random slideshow/sandbox. If you pretend to edit that sandbox (no need to change anything) then preview a portal with it, you should see the links. Thanks for the reply. {{Transclude files as random slideshow/sandbox}} seems to be working fine, at least on the Telephones portal, which I have been working on. Check it out. I feel that a generic link is better than having no link at all. One strong personal preference is to remove the ellipsis after the "Read more". I find it to be unnecessary, very outdated and even arcane. Internet users know that an active blue link leads to a new page. Removal of the ellipses also gives pages a cleaner layout, in my opinion, rather than having a bunch of ... littering pages ... in every ... other box.... How about clarifying what the visitor could read more about, by replacing "Read more..." by the title of the page containing the image? Now available in sandbox. and visible on Portal:Telephones. Well, in that mobile view the boxed doesn't show up at all, whereas the inline does. Looks like I'm going to use inline portal links exclusively from this point onward. I've seen discussions about this general topic somewhere or another a while back, and people were saying that the boxed version wasn't showing up. This still appears to be the case.
