Casliber, are you coming back to finish this review? I suspect it fell off your radar, since it isn't like you to wait a month. If you aren't interested in pursuing it, though, please let me know, and I'll add it to the list of articles needing review. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:34, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2013 September newsletter edit

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice.   Sasata (submissions),   Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and   Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Main Page appearance: Blue-faced Honeyeater edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Blue-faced Honeyeater know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on October 15, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 15, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The Blue-faced Honeyeater is a passerine bird of the Honeyeater family Meliphagidae and is common in northern and eastern Australia and southern New Guinea. A large honeyeater at around 29.5 cm (11.6 in) in length, it has distinctive plumage, with olive upperparts, white underparts and a black head and throat with white nape and cheeks. Males and females are similar in external appearance. Adults have a blue area of bare skin on each side of the face readily distinguishing them from juveniles, which have yellow or green patches of bare skin. Found in open woodland, parks, and gardens, it appears to be sedentary in parts of its range and locally nomadic in other parts; however, the species has been little studied since it was first described by the ornithologist John Latham in 1802. Its diet is mostly composed of invertebrates, supplemented with nectar and fruit. Its propensity for feeding on the flowers and fruit of bananas in north Queensland has given it the common name of "Bananabird". Blue-faced Honeyeaters often take over and renovate old babbler nests, in which the female lays and incubates two or rarely three eggs. Three subspecies are recognised. (Full article...)

New ant task force edit

Hello Casliber! I see you have edited a lot of ant-related articles, including the FA Ant. You may be interested in the recently created ant task force. Check out the task force's subpage and see if you're able to help out with any of the open tasks (or add new tasks). This list of ant-related open access may prove useful for expanding stubs and DYKs. If you're interested in copy editing future GA/FA nomination, please add your username including a short comment like "copy editing" in the Participants list and someone will {{ping}} you when needed. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Vela (constellation), you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Asterism and Wolf-Rayet (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). G'day, from another Aussy interested in bettering this resource's health information edit

Continued on from the intro on Jmh649's talk page

Yep, I knew those drugs were TGA approved, Cas. I'm Aussy too, proud to be Aussy too seeing how the Americans are a little short of psychotropics in my opinion, although in a few ways we're a little short (e.g. lurasidone, vilazodone and vortioxetine haven't reached the Aussy market as you may be aware. Oddly trazodone isn't used 'ere either). Agomelatine, moclobemide, amisulpride and zuclopenthixol are all invaluable psychotropic drugs in my opinion (I realise there's a few others like sertindole, mianserin and reboxetine but seeing how they're nothing worth boasting about in turns of efficacy and tolerability I felt like conveniently ignoring them). I've just been trying to find a nice uniform and accurate way of determining whether a drug is approved by the Canadian regulator because I already 'ave a way for doing the same with the TGA (i.e. TGA eBusiness services). PC - semi for Amanda Bynes edit

Hi Casliber, I'm just about to make a request that Amanda Bynes (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) be semi protected due to long term vandalism and BLP vios. Since you PC protected it I thought I'd let you know. Regards, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 03:02, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have just semi'ed it - I thought about doing it a week ago, I find Pending Changes of very little value anywhere - IPs are frustrated their edits don't 'take' and don't stick around to answer the inevitable questions from reviewers. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:22, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think it works on articles which get both vandalism and 'good' edits as long as it isn't too much. There are some articles which get IP edits enough to warrant semi but PC does the job really well because it still allows good faith edits without the person feeling like they have to request it on the talk page. If the Byrnes article was getting less attention then I think it would be worthwhile, but the PC just isn't making a difference. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 04:14, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Also while you're at it could you please remove the PC protection so the article doesn't show the effectively useless PC box thing? Thanks, Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 04:17, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Done - Callanecc - have you seen any useful IP edits you've accepted? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 09:01, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Some, have a look at my review log, the majority I see through Special:PendingChanges I accept or undo for a reasonably complicated reason (which if the page wasn't protected would stay in there). I think the best this about it is that there is some external review of pages which are known to have a problem, on pages which get nothing but vandalism or BLP vios they should be semi'd and for pages which get both good and bad edits they should be PC protected - assuming there is enough editing to warrant protection. My personal opinion is that we should be PC protecting articles which are known to receive 'borderline' editing. Whether it be unsourced edits, sometimes vandalism and sometimes not or occasional BLP violations. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 11:32, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Spider bite edit

Hi. The FAC is getting long, so I have commented here to help you to focus. If you do not agree, then at least you will have thought about it. In the redback spider article the clinical effects of its bite are not well presented, it seem so me. It does not give a clear picture of a mild to moderate case. It lists a lot of symptoms and signs. It does not give the slightly different presentation in children, so it is not balanced. The comparison the the American spider is too early in the paragraph. Separate paragraphs of mild cases and severe cases might be helpful. I still think that most of this could be dealt with on a linked article, but it looks like a lengthy section is there to stay and so it should give the correct impression and have appropriate balance. There are so many reference points and so it is difficult for me to edit. To speed things up, I have been making direct edits to the article, which I hope has reduced the work of discussion on the FAC. Looks like A Clinician’s Guide to Australian Venomous Bites and Stings: incorporating the updated CSL Antivenom Handbook, 2013, would be useful, partly because it deals with the ante-venom controversies; see Doctors get guide to venomous bites and stings. Apparently Australian doctors can get a free copy. Snowman (talk) 13:56, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by that page and have typed in my registration number and ordered a free copy. Hopefully they haven't run out. I was on holiday recently and unfortunately got hit by a car in China. I have a sprained ankle and sore back - both are getting better but I have not been comfortable sitting for long periods, and lying down and using an ipad does not lend itself to editing. The changes look ok (wikipedia is ultimately collaborative so this approach can be good in the interests of expediency) - as long as we use colours and reviewers cross off issues they are satisfied with, the page is ok. Now for the children...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:56, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Please let me know what you think of the new edition of the handbook. Yes, RTAs are a major risk of foreign travel. Some roads in far away places are not at the same standard as those at home, some are only gravel. This is all part of routine foreign travel advice, and I know this because I went on a two-day course on it years ago. I wonder if there is a Wiki article on preparation for foreign travel, but I am not even going to look for it, because I would rather focus on editing and illustrating hobby topics. For me, the main show stopper of the spider article is the clinical section, and I hope that can be sorted out in a day or two, and that the article will be a FA by the end of the week. What is the incidence of spider bites in children? Are Australian children thought about spiders at school? Snowman (talk) 21:08, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Content editors edit

Just wanted to drop by to note a couple of things (without wanting to go into the specific block or civility discussion here). First, I know that people like Eric Corbett and others provide more and better content than I do. I have no problem acknowledging that, it would be hard to claim otherwise. What I do have a problem with is people dismissing everything that isn't up to these high standards as insignificant, or that other contributions (maintenance, coding, whatever) is not worthwhile, or that only the major content contributors should be allowed to judge their peers.

You haven't said any of these things, and implied only some of them to some extent, but your comments are (in my opinion) refelctive of a common trait between some of the people now defending Eric Corbett, and this rather artificial division between content editors and others is not helpful to find compromise or to get a good functioning community.

To give an example of a much more extreme comment in this regard (which may help you understand my reaction to this aspect): in a long and rather acrimonious discussion, Epipelagic gave his apparent definition of what a content builder is: "substantial articles, say over 40K, for which you are the primary content builder?" (changed to 30K in a subsequent edit[https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jimbo_Wales&diff=prev&oldid=548210793) This already excludes everyone who researches and builds 5-10K C-class articles but doesn't bring them to B or GA or FA class, like Achilles on Skyros, or higher quality articles like Winnie Winkle or collaborations like Lilian Faithfull. After discovering that at the time I was working on a long (40+ K) list that was nominated for featured list, he changed his criteria to "over 30 or 40K and not just lists". So apparently even the creation of something like Leuchtenberg Gallery doesn't qualify me as a content builder in the eyes of some people.

Having created a few hundred articles (really created, I'm not counting the creations from public domain sources here), including a few GAs and one FL, most of them after I became an admin, it is not really encouraging to be dismissed as someone who is not a content builder. It is not the only thing I do, and it comes and goes in waves, but dividing people between content builders and non-content builders (usually admins), and judging people solely on their content additions (and not also on e.g. their hoax removals or other constructive edits), doesn't help to resolve conflicts and ease tensions. I am also wary of the few people who spent 95% of their time on noticeboards, but these are truly the exceptions.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to clarify my position a bit, away from AN. Fram (talk) 13:18, 30 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Addendum: you asked for some evidence of collaborative editing. As an example, I often get "thanks" notices for my disabling of mainspace cats in AfC submissions (edits like this one). Another example is Bosworth Tennis, which looked like this when I noticed it. My initial edit, apart from my regular tagging, corrected a redlink[2]. But I felt that more could be done with this, so a few days later I turned it into a real article[3]. A slightly older example is this one, where I declined the speedy, and turned it into a DYK the next week. Dr. Blofeld then turned it into GA.

I don't do this often enough though, I no longer have the time I used to have to edit here at length, and currently it is more convenient for me to do gnoming. Fram (talk) 13:31, 30 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I have no problem with editors who contribute little content per se, but I do get sick of editors who spend alot of time at AN/I discussing other editors, commenting on how corrosive incivility is while all the time adding reams of acrimony, or feel it is their right to judge content editors and articles without putting themselves in the spotlight. I have a problem with editors who consider profanity incivil but not the production of walls of text in important discussion which (often intentionally) act as filibusters. I also prefer editors who blow off steam when annoyed rather than bear grudges for months or years waiting for a time to screw an antagonist over at a later date....
NB:I quoted the pillars half in jest and irony - I really hate being dogmatic in these situations. I just feel we're at a crossroads and really need all hands on deck to get the 'pedia to the next stage in its life cycle (long story for another time).
That all said, Several arbs who were fine arbs did little content (though I do think editing content gives one a less jaundiced view of wikipedia and more of an eye for how the content will turn out after arb cases etc.) - I just looked a couple of times at two sets of 500 article space edits in the past few months and was dismayed at the proportion of automated tagging. I did convert one - Sand_Sharks - into a DYK, but you know how heartening it is if someone comes along and even just copyedits or corrects a typo it is a really nice feeling, and reckon if you'd sprinkled a few more of those in, or offered a few driveby comments at Peer Review, where editors are desperate for any feedback, then these type of edits go along way to improving the atmosphere. I am more than happy to be proven wrong - as a staunch inclusionist I butted heads with many editors before finding common ground elsewhere and was (and am) happy to revise my opinions of anyone in a positive direction. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 13:46, 30 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Nice one (Sand Sharks, I mean). I don't keep articles I tagged on my watchlist (I have a 30K watchlist as it stands, so...). I normally read (superficially) the articles I tag, but I normally don't take the time to edit them. Often, it is the choice between spending 10 minutes to half an hour on an article, or spending a few seconds. Like I said, for the moment I often only have a few minutes to spare, and I note that the new page patrolling, with the deletion of unacceptable material (which needs an admin ultimately), doesn't get done otherwise (I'm expressing myself badly here, new page patrolling gets done, but I note that often, even after a few days, totally unacceptable and unsaveable pages are still not tagged for deletion). It's the problem most of us have of too much to do and not enough time. Fram (talk) 14:13, 30 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I know - if I have limited time RFPP and the DYK queue are places I look, smartphones are pretty useless for editing except reverting at Recent Changes, but my fingers often hit "rollback" (might have to disable that one as I've done that more than once!) and have had to explain/apologise. Peer Review can be quick as it is unstructured and one can often see glaring issues in 45 seconds. I keep making promises I'll take more frequent looks there. My problem is that I am only now properly getting over a sore back and sprained ankle after being hit by a car in Beijing a few weeks ago ..which made sitting for long periods uncomfortable. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 03:32, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to hear that. I sometimes look at the DYK queue as well, it often has rather glaring problems, but most of the time people react rather badly when an article is pulled from the queue, as if their right to a spot on the front page is more important than accuracy or BLP policy... Fram (talk) 07:42, 31 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Spider length ambiguity edit

In this edit, I think you have made it ambiguous about which "length" you are talking about. The length of the entire spider including the legs, or just the body? The ones I've seen have a body length about 1cm and a total length ~3cm. --99of9 (talk) 03:29, 1 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Florence Fuller, perhaps edit

Hello Cas. I have just written this biography. Owing to there being an event in Canberra next week that will give her some (minor art world) prominence, I was wondering if you are free to do an urgent GAN review with editorial suggestions? Also planning then to take it to FAC. If not, just let me know. Cheers, hamiltonstone (talk) 13:19, 7 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Should be able to. Let me look. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:52, 7 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for checking it over. Just as you were closing out the review, i came across the auction catalogue for a key painting (i suspect the NGA was the buyer, as the sale was only a year ago). It actually provided some important information, as well as putting me on to a quote i had overlooked, so i have modified the article thus. It appears the NGA may be talking up as certainty something that was in fact speculation as to the picture's subject... hamiltonstone (talk) 12:19, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Bounty board edit

Historical pages aren't normally edited after they're marked historical.

In the AfD discussion, there was no consensus for the "More Detailed Proposal" which prescribed "[moving] all bounty offers to Wikipedia:Bounty board/Expired and claimed bounties#Expired bounties". The closing admin did not do this.

The editorial you added near the top of the page doesn't necessarily express the consensus from the AfD discussion.

Please undo the edits you've made since the page was marked historical. —rybec 16:43, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Rybec - if the bounties are still listed there, then they give the (misleading) impression that the board or any of those bounties are still active. Hence they need to be archived. I have moved all them all to the Wikipedia:Bounty board/Expired and claimed bounties. Did you notice that? Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:24, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
The {{historical}} template puts a large banner on the page saying it's no longer being used. That's enough to prevent any such misconception. Have a look at any other page that includes the template: apart from adding the template, they are left in the state they were abandoned in. You've also written your own interpretation of the outcome of the AfD discussion and added it to the page. How is that proper? —rybec 19:59, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
No it isn't - why leave things hanging around. Do you disagree that they are historical now? Surely moving them (a) tidies up the page and (b) doubly prevents any ambiguity. Unfortunately the closing admin didn't write anything other than the verdict, which is a bit of a shame in this case. We can ask them. Do you disagree with the content of anything I placed on the page? What is not proper about tidying up and giving any future person who drops by some information on it?Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 20:05, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yunshui's assessment looks right to me: many commenters wanted the page tagged with "historical" or "closed down", but only a few wanted deletion, blanking, or the removal of the offers. They gave other reasons for closing it, besides the ones you mention: many noted that it had received little use. How about a link to the AfD discussion in place of your summary? —rybec 21:23, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I will ping Yunshui as closing admin then. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:26, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Promote DYK hook? edit

Hi, I had a DYK approved a few days ago, but the hook has yet to be promoted (with other stuff promoted in the meantime), at T:TDYK, see Katherine Ritvo. Not sure who is promoting hooks these days, but looks like a labor shortage over at DYK generally, so I'm pinging a few people about this. Help? Thanks! Hi Casliber,

I stumbled across your idea for a stub improvement contest today, and I think it's great. I have a whole bucket of articles that I'd like to improve. In fact, I was just thinking, "Gah! Look at the state of Wikipedia. Sure, we've created some 20,000 so-called Good Articles, but how many untold millions still sit in the muck?" And as my brain was pondering all that, my fingers were bringing me to you.

In other words, please do let me know when the contest is on. I'm on to win it or at least give a damn good effort. Thank, Bobnorwal (talk) 04:31, 15 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pavo edit

Casliber--I have the book by Chartrand and am quoting from it directly (I can send you a pdf of the page). I used the direct quote regarding Pavo rather than a paraphrase to make sure it was clear that I was not adding my two cents. Given Chartrand's (apparent) credentials and his expertise in the history of constellations, I find this to be a fascinating footnote. As to whether the ancient Greeks would have been able to see Pavo, this is a fair point. I would simply note that Pavo roughly lies along the same celestial path as Crux, just slightly more toward the south, although I believe its more "northern" stars are technically higher than those of Crux. -Ben

Main Page appearance: Common Raven edit

This is a note to let the main editors of Common Raven know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 10, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 10, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The Common Raven is a large, all-black passerine bird. Found across the northern hemisphere, it is the most widely distributed of all corvids. There are at least eight subspecies with little variation in appearance, although there are significant genetic differences among populations from various regions. It is possibly the heaviest passerine; at maturity, the Common Raven averages 63 centimetres (25 inches) in length and 1.2 kilograms (2.6 pounds) in mass. Common Ravens can live up to 21 years in the wild, a lifespan exceeded among passerines by only a few Australasian species. Young birds may travel in flocks but later mate for life, with each pair defending a territory. The Common Raven has coexisted with humans for thousands of years and in some areas is considered a pest. Part of its success comes from its omnivorous diet; Common Ravens are extremely versatile in finding sources of nutrition. Some notable feats of problem-solving have been observed in the species, leading to the belief that it is intelligent. Over the centuries, it has been the subject of mythology, folklore, art, and literature. In many indigenous cultures, it has been revered as a spiritual figure or god. (Full article...)

Main Page appearance: redback spider edit

This is a note to let the main editors of redback spider know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 19, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 19, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

The redback spider is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders. The adult female has a black body with a prominent abdominal red stripe (pictured). Females have a body length of about 1 centimetre (0.4 in), while the male is much smaller, being only 3–4 mm (0.12–0.16 in) long. Mainly nocturnal, the female redback lives in an untidy web in a warm sheltered location near or inside human residences. It preys on insects, spiders and small vertebrates that become ensnared in its web. Male spiders and spiderlings often live on the periphery of the female spiders' web and steal leftovers. The redback is one of few arachnids which usually display sexual cannibalism while mating. It has a widespread distribution in Australia, and inadvertent introductions have led to established colonies in New Zealand, Japan and in greenhouses in Belgium. The redback is one of the few spider species that can be seriously harmful to humans. An antivenom has been available since 1956, although there are disputes about its effectiveness, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. (Full article...)

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse Betelgeuse edit

I don't think I told you that I first remember hearing the English pronunciation of the star before the FA nom, because I'd only ever read the word and pronounced it like it is in German, which is like this. I found it fascinating how different it sounds, and that it is male, for some reason. Crazy right? Also, your plants articles inspired me: next year I will try to grow a snow gum from seed and put it in the garden, I bought some seeds from an exotic seed seller which were gathered on Mt. Hotham, and they weren't even that expensive. Perhaps a plant or two will survive with good winter protection. They may grow in England but I need good luck in zone 7. It would probably be good to get some images of Eucalyptus seedling of ssp. niphophila for Wikipedia. I haven't seen any. Best regards Hekerui (talk) 15:39, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I remember being a little kid and my grandmother pronouncing it like "Bĕt-el-gerz". Funny word, that's for sure. Now everyone says Beetle-juice since the movie. I nagged my uncle who has a holiday house and land in Long Island, New York to try a snow gum for fun. Recently, I was in London, and walking along the road to Ravenscourt Park Tube saw an enormous gum tree in someone's front yard. Hakea arborescens was grown outside at Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, so some of these will grow in pretty interesting locales....Go for it!Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 19:17, 11 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Advertising the Tyop Contest edit

Hi Casliber,

I got the grant! It got approved, thanks for all of your help with that :D

I am going to start advertising now. I am wondering if I am allowed to post messages to users talk pages inviting them to join the contest. I know this might be considered canvassing, but I disagree. It is merely a contest to contribute the overall quality of Wikipedia. Can you please contribute your insight onto this situation?

Thanks! Newyorkadam (talk) 03:56, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

P.S. The contest is here :)

I promised Adam I would help out in organizing this event, (I'm officially mentoring him) if you need reassurance. Thanks Secret account 03:58, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well done! You should approach the Wikipedia Signpost - it'd be good if they do a story a week or two beforehand. Also post on the Village Pump and (importantly) Template:Centralized discussion. I would not call it canvassing to post on talk pages. This place is really big and folks miss stuff all the time. I was about to suggest posting at the tlak page of the Wikipedia:Typo Team, but I see you've done that already. Also, anyone who is good at graphics would be good to pretty up the contest page. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:01, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
We could use ours with a graphic, but I am not that person. Mitch32(New digs, new life, same old stubborn.) 04:06, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'll contact the Signpost in a little while, when we get nearer the contest (contest is February-March). I'm working on getting some style for the page made right now. I'll post at the Village Pump, thanks for the link!
So it's ok if I post an invitation on talk pages? I might be posting a couple hundred if that's ok... Thanks! Newyorkadam (talk) 04:20, 14 December 2013 (UTC)NewyorkadamReply
Go for it - all you are doing is promoting something. It is not as if you are trying to canvass an opinion in a dispute or anything. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 04:22, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Schizophrenia frustration edit

Cas, are you going to be able to keep up there? I've been begging folks to update the DSM5 articles for months, and now this Moyers fellow has gone all over Wikipedia recruiting people who aren't familiar with FA standards to edit the article. I'm tired of babysitting that article; if you aren't able to give it a significant effort, I'm going to unwatch and let it go to FAR. Tired of babysitting it by myself. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:17, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

We had a long discussion at WP:AN last month where consensus was that editnotices could be added to FAs, but only admins can create them. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive257#Articlespace editnotices Would you mind creating:
If we still had an FA leader, we'd get that installed on every FA. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:29, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
There is alot of controversy and annoyance about DSM5 - on looking at it, it isn't as bad as I feared, but I recall some institutions declaring they wouldn't use it a few months ago, which was concerning. I can access DSM5 via online access at my library. I am really strapped for time at present and it needs a proper sit-down and lookover. Not sure when I will get to it. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 05:03, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Controversy about DSM5 wasn't a reason for Wikipedia to not update its articles-- whether we like it or not, it's still DSM5. Anyway, I have never liked babysitting schizophrenia, it's not my baby, and now it's under full-blown assault from editors who don't know the standards of regular articles, much less FAs, and I'm tired of being one of few who have to sit on that article. I shall submit it to FAR myself, and argue strongly this time that it be de-featured, since no one gives a F. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:43, 17 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I just checked with my hospital library - they ordered a copy in July which still hasn't appeared. I would like to see a hard copy to compare with what I can see via online access (which does not have page numbers!). The DSM copyright is a real headache for all psychiatric diagostic articles and I think I'd like some clarification on what we can and can't have before proceeding. I need to check the archives to see what were our conclusions in the past. Feel free to nominate it. That is what FAR is for anyway. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 02:55, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Allright, fine, I'll go ask MastCell or Jmh649 to help create the editnotices, which we sorely need on medical FAs (and should have on all FAs, but without a leader, that isn't happening). It's not only schizophrenia that needs to go to FAR-- there's also autism, reactive attachment disorder and major depressive disorder as well, and possibly Asperger syndrome since, although I updated it for DSM5, it hasn't been generally updated since Eubulides left. If WT:MED doesn't have the resources to watch these FAs, they shouldn't be FAs. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:43, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
On the DSM copyright issue, I was involved the last time the APA went through and had everything in sight tagged as copyvio based on a letter to Mike Godwin-- even those of us who long knew that the APA strictly defended its copyright and hadn't committed copyvio were tagged, see Talk:Tic disorder#Copyright problems with diagnostic criteria and Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2010 March 9#DSM complaint .28Ticket:2010030910040817.29. Right now, Schizophrenia is going too far with DSM-IV-TR. Basically, the APA doesn't want us giving out enough of their criteria that we can be used for diagnosis. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:43, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Right - getting to work on the editnotices. I could always nominate you for adminship - this is the reason I became an admin - to facilitate content editing. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 10:29, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cas, I'll start a subpage with the editnotice thingie so we can all work on it-- will ping you. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:38, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Holy cow, I see you're already doing them! Woohoo! Cas, can I be made a "template editor" (user rights) so I don't have to bug you with this? There is a Featured Article that should be Featured article (no uppercase), but I can't even edit those pages, or help with them. Also, I linked twice to WIAFA ... revised: SandyGeorgia (Talk) 18:44, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Schizophrenia is a Featured article. While it is open for editing like any other, it has gone through a community review process at Featured article candidates, where it was checked for high quality sources, a thorough survey of the relevant literature, and compliance with the criteria for Featured articles. It is considerate to discuss significant changes of text or images on the talk page first. This article must comply with Wikipedia's medical content guidelines, medical sourcing guidelines, and the Featured article standards, including a consistent citation style.

Cas, Laser brain made me a template editor: don't tell Drmies or my dh, but I'm in love. I redid Template:Editnotices/Page/Schizophrenia. Woohoo ! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:47, 18 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

How did I get in here? Just because of my MPD? I'm not schizophrenic, you know--and that's what I just told Jesus too. OH! Now I see it! YOUR IN LUV with another man! Well, that's a type 6 on your kitchen island then. Anyway, congrats on your new status, Sandy, and may you put it to good use. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Phoenix is a constellation in the southern sky, stretches from roughly −39° to −57° declination, and from 23.5h to 2.5h of right ascension. Named after the mythical phoenix, it was first depicted on a celestial atlas by Johann Bayer in his 1603 Uranometria. The French explorer and astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille charted the brighter stars and gave their Bayer designations in 1756. The brightest star, Alpha Phoenicis, or Ankaa, is an orange giant of apparent magnitude 2.4. Nu Phoenicis has a dust disk, while the constellation boasts ten star systems with planets, and HE0107-5240, possibly one of the oldest stars yet discovered. It has around 1/200,000 the metallicity that the Sun has and hence must have formed very early in the history of the universe. The recently discovered galaxy clusters El Gordo and the Phoenix Cluster—located 7.2 and 5.7 billion light years away respectively, are two of the largest objects in the visible universe. Phoenix is the radiant of two annual meteor showers: the Phoenicids in December, and the July Phoenicids. (Full article...)

Very quick question about the Stub Contest edit

Hi Casliber - I'm loving the stub contest, and it seems to be having a really positive effect on enwiki as a whole (hundreds of stubs expanded, thousands re-rated etc.). I just have one quick question - I initially wrote and was credited for Luzula nivalis before I expanded it to it's current size, and it is now at 4951 B of readable prose size. Middle Ages edit

Looks to me that we're dealing with a nationalistic editor using either sockpuppets or meatpuppets - see JanHusCz and Sumatro. Can someone please do SOMETHING??? This is the sort of crap that drives good content editors away... Ealdgyth - Talk 14:11, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. In May of this year, a user named Ceco31 was topic-banned from anything relating to Bulgaria. His last edits were to editwar on Bulgarians. (See also this and this.) Sumatro shows up in August, immediately using rather complex Wikisyntax and engaging in an editwar right off the bat at Bulgarians. (Jingiby reverts him with the comment "Rv. sock of a blocked user: Ceco31", which sounds quite plausible.) Sumatro edits nothing but Bulgarians all month, then in September switches to Nina Dobrev, a model, where he's only interested in the "Bulgarian nationality and citizenship" aspects. Edit wars there, and edits nothing but that one article for months. Meanwhile, JanHusCz also shows up in September, and after the 4 days and 12 edits it takes to get auto-confirmed, he immediately set about at Nina Dobrev making the same sort of changes as Sumatro, using wikisyntax and citing Wikipedia policy like a pro. Both quit Nina in early December and set on Middle Ages together, edit warring to emphasize Bulgaria there. Despite agreeing completely, they never once use each other's talk page or really reply to each other on article talk pages. If you want to take this to WP:ANI or WP:SPI, I'll help present the relevant info. Quadell (talk) 14:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
