Administrators' newsletter – August 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

hello, I can see you nominated the article Star Alex for deletion on every possible topic. Star Alex is a well known petite model, and internet personality. She has almost 180,000 followers on her verified tiktok account and has almost 40,000 on her instagram page. I dont see why this is up for deletion by you. I looked her up and she is a very respected model in the business, she just doesnt have as many "reliable" sources because of her PETITE modeling (which means that agencies dont really work with her because the industry is dangerously strict.) If you read some of the many articles about her it states that she remains unsigned because she has been discriminated against for her height. I dont know this woman personally, but checking from her social media accounts and interviews- she is trying to change the world even as a "petite" model- which shouldnt be taken from her because you think her sources arent credible enough (because the industry has no respect for models of her height) she is just as relevant if not more- than half the models that have articles up

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).

Other discussions

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

I don't understand how to use this space to contact you. I hope I am doing this correctly. It's very confusing to newbie. You recently reverted my edit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Harbor_Airport_(Washington) You said it "did not appear constructive". I don't know how that makes any sense. The airport is gone. There are houses built where the runway used to exist. I believe it "is constructive" to let people know that there is no longer an airport. I will edit the page again. Maybe it will be more constructively done this time... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sultanguy (talkcontribs) 18:06, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Addition of signature to template

Hi I saw that you added my signature to a template addition that I made on 2 afds. As far as I am aware it is not necessary to do this. In TEMPLATE:Page creator there is no mention of the need to sign. Could you point me to the guidelines that says this has to be done please? Cheers. Dom from Paris (talk) 09:23, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

@CAPTAIN RAJU: Hi sorry to ping you but I would like an answer please. --Dom from Paris (talk) 20:50, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

Page Deletion

I hope you are enjoying your vacation. I noticed you were involved in the deletion of the article I created on Tristan Tondino. You seem like a digital guru and I wanted to let you know that I was honest in my attempt to create and work on the article. I hate the anonymity in Wikipedia sometimes but here is what happened last week that I have a few questions regarding. I have Linkedin Premium and Academia Premium. I believe there is a personal connection between the subject of the article and the individuals that targeted the article for deletion. Whenever I added citations they were instantly removed or questioned. So I've taken a screenshot of them from my social media pages. I should not have created the article because of the COI but I was using my name which appeared in the article and read that while being a COI is an issue the main point is objectivity. Sorry to bother you with this here JOSBRU (talk) 11:50, 2 November 2019 (UTC)
