FYI edit

Maybe you can provide extra details, but your page move request here doesn't seem to fall into the "uncontroversial" category. Best, JamieS93 be kind to newcomers 13:24, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Not sure which name would be preferable at this point, but it cannot be considered an "uncontroversial" action for an admin to deal with on the spot. I'd suggest that you create a discussion for the page move by following the instructions at: WP:RM#Requesting potentially controversial moves. That way, others can hopefully leave a few comments and a consensus can be reached. Hope that helps. BTW, I created a redirect for the link S James Anaya that you had mentioned. Oodgeroo's biog edit

Hi Bruce,

I've been reading a bit about Oodgeroo as part of my history studies recently, and have started contributing to Oodgeroo's article (my first foray into wikipedia). I noticed that you've made lots of contributions to this article, and have helped keep it free of vandalism over the last couple of years. So I took a bit of a look at your page and contributions list. Wow! you have done a lot of wiki work! I was just curious about why you have chosen Oodgeroo as one of the biographies you're now focussing on developing. I was also hoping you could see whether my recent contribs (especially the one on what Oodgeroo was trying to do with her poetry) are in line with how wiki should work - its so hard to tell the full story by just sticking to the facts!

Thanks for writing back, Bruceanthro. I've done a bit more reading on wiki, and I think my edits are ok. I'd love to read that thesis on Stradbroke Island, did you mean its not yet finished, or that the author tossed it in for more urgent things? I'm going up to Brisbane next month and hope I get to visit the island and learn a bit more about Oodgeroo there Emma LD (talk) 06:55, 28 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Australian Aborigines edit

Removal of ....{{dablink|This article is about the indigenous peoples of Australia. For other indigenous peoples see [[Indigenous peoples (disambiguation)]]}}

The article no longer has the link to Indigenous peoples by geographic regions I have no problem with this....but have gotten 2 emails asking Y Australian Aborigines is not link like the 100 other indigenous articles listed here..It will stay listed on the Indigenous peoples by geographic regions page as per world view Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The word aboriginal was used in Australia to describe its Indigenous peoples as early as 1789. Many countries call themselves First people/Original inhabits/Founding population/Native people/Aboriginals/Intitial Culture..but global term is Indigenous people see Definitions and identity of indigenous peoples

I will leave your edit alone...but not sure if others will..

ps added your article on [Indigenous intellectual property]] to the (disambiguation) part of Indigenous peoples by geographic regions#Other

Fair use rationale for File:Electirc Ant siz01.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Electirc Ant siz01.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. IUCN categories edit

Hello, I'm looking for someone who can help me understand the IUCN categories-I've read and reread the Definitiond PDf and still am having trouble deciding which cat. is best for the area (protected areas in California)I'm writing about. For example, most "ecological reserves" are under Ia-Strict Nature Reserve, but if habitat restoration work is being done i.e. replanting native vegetation, wouldn't that come under Habitat/Species Management category? Or if native people can hunt within the reserve, that is management of population of game animals. Since the IUCN cats are the standard, I really need to understand them as they apply to my corner of the globe.

Hope to hear back-sincerely, Marcia Wright (talk) 18:04, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

False Bundjalung Nation is Fraser's Fabrication edit

False Bundjalung Nation is Fraser's Fabrication

Hi Bruce,

Have found John Frasers' 1892 fabrication of Paikal-Yung in "The Aborigines of New South Wales" which researcher Norman Tindale twisted into Badjalang which then became Bundjalung.

Fraser states "The names Paikalyung (etc) I have made". This link is Frasers' 1892 book.

http://books.google.com.au/books?id=K9Ix39XVANAC&pg=PA91&lpg=PA91&dq=fraser+minyung&source=bl&ots=ADtH2GXbCo&sig=wh8tpCgV7rqcISVobP7uPyZjaRo&hl=en&ei=l8l4S6m9NInEsQOwt628Cw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=&f=false

Tindale stated (paidjal = badjal = man) but did not include the crucial facts about Frasers fabrication.

There was no Bundjalung Tribe, People, Nation, Language or Dialect Chain.

This link is Tindales book.http://www.samuseum.australia.sa.com/tindaletribes/badjalang.htm

Will include this incredible information on the page soon. Or should the false Bundjalung page be removed?

sub tropical lowland rainforest edit

Howdy,

Thanks for looking at my recent article on Wingham Brush Nature Reserve. It is one of three sub tropical lowland rainforest remnants in northern New South Wales added to Wikipedia lately.

Don't say sorry to me. Your remarks are perfectly fine.

I added the chapters on Indigenous Australians as an after thought. I'm not particularly interested in such anthropological things. My main interest is botany. My understanding is that these places were of interest to the local Biripi, Bundjalung people and the tribe which occurs to the south of the Clarence River. Is that the Yuraygir people? I dunno, you tell me.

Tonight I chatted with a girl from the Yuin people. She liked the story of my recent travels.

If you can advise how these articles can be further improved, then I'd like to hear more from you.

And why aren't all these Aboriginal nations properly represented on Wikipedia? I'll write about them, if I have good and reliable references. It's good fun to walk in these great jungles a few days ago.

Arthurs Vale edit

Hello, I have just moved the article you created removing the apostrophe- the various official sites can't seem to make their minds up either way, but Geoscience is quite clear - there are no possessive apostrophes in Australian placenames and Arthurs Vale is listed (as a valley). Are you working on the other two redlinks? I was about to create something, but probably just as stubs. Cheers (Crusoe8181 (talk) 04:40, 5 August 2010 (UTC)).Reply

Thanks for that (Crusoe8181 (talk). I did try Geoscience for the combined name Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area without luck, but didn't perform individual name searches! Quotations edit

Without being too critical I wanted to draw your attention to this essay on quotations and Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. I wanted to highlight these pages after editing the Wild river article. With 10 different quotes I find the article difficult to read, in that it doesn't flow very well, like good prose should. It seems unbalanced, like a short article which has too many pictures. Another issue is that much of the quoted text is copyrighted, whereas we are creating a free content encyclopedia. Except for strict definitions, a summary with an inline citation is usually better than a quotation. - Shiftchange (talk) 00:17, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:NyungkalCIMS.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:NyungkalCIMS.jpg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

File permission problem with File:Gil SelfPotrait.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Gil SelfPotrait.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:PSutton Book.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:PSutton Book.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 03:32, 10 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Vincent Mundraby edit

Hello, Bruceanthro. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Vincent Mundraby, for deletion because it's a biography of a living person that lacks references. If you don't want Vincent Mundraby to be deleted, please add a reference to the article.

If you don't understand this message, you can leave a note on my talk page.

Thanks,

Your article edit

Hey! Thanks for dropping me a note. As I can see you added a reference, and therefore the proposed deletion was properly removed. It is WP policy to propose for deletion those articles on living people which do not contain any references- that being said, articles will not be deleted under such a tag until 7 days have passed - so there is a grace period. In any case, thank you for adding a reference ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 00:47, 16 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wet tropics of Queensland edit

Take a look at the whole edit. It’s a change request which belongs on Talk Kerry (talk) 08:11, 1 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

I probably should add that it's done by a paid editor, who appears unaware of our policies in relation to copyright and our Manual of Style, but having done a botched job leaves it for volunteer editors to clean up. The user has failed to engage on User Talk to discuss concerns raised. So I suggest you check any of these edits very carefully for issues like copyright etc before letting them through. Kerry (talk) 01:46, 2 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Kerry .. from what I know and from the reference attached . the national listing of the wet Tropics for it's indigenous values not only occurred but did need to be added to the article ,, though it is true the 'proposing' ought to have been done on the talk page, which I think has been quickly remedied .. and the whole article needs a working over .. maybe as something to do if/when I get some more time leading up to Xmas Bruceanthro (talk) 02:07, 2 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Langscape moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Langscape, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the confirms on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. –Ammarpad (talk) 06:29, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Ammarpad (talk) 06:29, 10 April 2018 (UTC) .. I fear it has been a long time since I have created new articles and am not therefore familiar with the draft space .. and am familiarizing myself with the referencing steps, requirements and more .. though you will see I did mark as a stub .. and did include a reviewed journal reference and link to a language science project which would have hoped might be sufficient to meet notability requirements and leave article as a stub for the time being to be worked on for the future? Speedy deletion nomination of Aboriginal Australian religion edit

Hello Bruceanthro,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Aboriginal Australian religion for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, Australian Aboriginal religion and mythology.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Annotated Aboriginal Sovereignty Movement References to Write into Article edit

I suggest that the contents of Talk:Australian Aboriginal Sovereignty § Annotated Aboriginal Sovereignty Movement References to Write into Article should be moved to a subpage (eg per item 7 of Wikipedia:Subpages § Allowed uses, with only a link from that section on the main Talk page, because it is evidently going to be quite long. Thank you Mitch Ames, is there any chance you could direct me to a 'how to' link and/or assist move this section being slowly assembled into a subpage as you suggest, with thanks Bruceanthro (talk) 00:06, 12 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Actually it looks like the {{to do}} template (which automatically generates a subpage) is a better way to go, so I've done it with these edits. Click "edit" or "show" on the right of the "To-do list" box as appropriate.
One problem with {{to do}} is that the headings on the "to do" page appear in the talk page table of contents, but the links from that TOC do not work (and they may clutter up the page if there are lots of them). Possibly solutions:

October 2018 edit

Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Jimmy Clements. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Deletion pending for File:Zoë Tryon Bio Photo.jpg edit

Hello, Bruceanthro. Some time ago, a file you uploaded — File:Zoë Tryon Bio Photo.jpg — was tagged with {{OTRS pending}}, indicating that you (or perhaps the copyright holder if you did not create this image) submitted a statement of permission to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. Though there is often a backlog processing messages received at this address, we should have received your message by now.

  • If you have not submitted (or forwarded) a statement of permission, please send it immediately to permissions-en@wikimedia.org and let us know at the OTRS noticeboard that you have done so.
  • If you have already sent this message, it is possible that there was a problem receiving it. Please re-send it to permissions-en@wikimedia.org and let us know at the OTRS noticeboard that you have done so.

If we don't hear from you within one week, the file will be deleted. If we can help you, please feel free to ask at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 15:39, 30 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sea of blue edit

Hi there - just a quick note to say that the reason for the less elegant sentence construction in Mick Miller was to avoid losing the new link in a sea of blue, which also makes it look like a Torres Strait Islander reserve. If you can think of a better way, please do, but I don't think that your revision has helped readability and comprehension... Would you mind taking another look, please? Cheers, Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:41, 7 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

OK, thank you Laterthanyouthink for leaving that note and explaining your edit. I have now had a first go at breaking the sea of blue .. where my own problem was with just how limiting it for wikipedia to only have an article on Aboriginal reserves and no parrell article on Torres Strait Island reserves, where the Torres Strait Island reserves were never Aboriginal reserves and it seems very confusing, peculiar, plus inaccurate to try to suggest Aboriginal reserves were for both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people .. ?! Bruceanthro (talk) 14:41, 7 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hi Bruce. Well, that took me on a long trip around Qld legislation (which I ended up adding to the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897)... It's tricky. I think that the article name for Aboriginal reserves reflects the original and commonly used name and needs to stay that way, as Qld is the only exception, and the two 1971 Acts governing the rules of the reserves for each group of people refer to them as simply "reserves". Long story short, the best wording for that article may be something like "... visits to the reserves in North Queensland for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people" - with the blue links behind "reserves" and "Torres Strait Islander". (I've also done some preliminary work on a potential style guide for how to refer to Australia's Indigenous peoples - discussions ongoing in the Australia WP - and along the way a couple of sources said not to abbreviate to ATSI, so I've been avoiding that myself.) Unless of course you can find enough material to justify a separate article for Torres Strait Islander reserves, which I don't have time to look into now, knowing little about Qld history. Anyway, I'm happy to leave the rest up to you, if you are - that long excursion has put me behind in other things I was going to do this afternoon! Thanks. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 04:25, 8 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wow Laterthanyouthink, I had a look at the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 additions you did and it is great you did that research and added to the article, also noting all the red for Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history articles yet to be writtin, in both the Mick Miller article plus that Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897 article!! ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:28, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguation link notification for January 23 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Bindal people, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cape Cleveland. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, --DPL bot (talk) 05:47, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:CharlesPerkinsGraduate01.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading File:CharlesPerkinsGraduate01.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 02:08, 14 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
