belated answer to question you posted on fractional calculus

Multiple integration can be seen as measuring the volume of a solid, the area of a surface, the length of a curve, etc. By extension, fractional integration can be seen as measuring the volume/area/length/whatever of a fractal.

Note, 1st-order integration on a volume will give you a surface of lengths, 2nd-order will give you a curve of areas, and 3rd-order will give you a point of volume. The same holds true for fractional integration.

In a way, integrating over an R-dimensional region is just projecting an N-dimensional function onto an N-R dimensional space. think of shining light through a translucent (3D)object onto a (2D)piece of paper. the darkness at a point on the (2D)surface of the paper is equal to the (1D)thickness("length") of the object at that point. 2D+1D=3D The "region of integration" in this example are the (1D)rays cast through the object. (The rays accumulate opacity.) ^{(Really opacity multiplies (50% opaque* 50% opaque = 25% penetration), but the principle is the same. And besides, you can just take the natural log of the darkness to convert it to a sum.)}

Thus, for example, if you do a fractional integration on coral, of order equal to the fractal dimension of the coral, you might get some (0D)growth parameter such as the rate of calcium deposition.

Now if you integrate to a lower order you might get from that a "surface" of growth rates, or something like that (though it might not be a 2-dimensional "surface"). If you look at a point in a region not on the surface of the coral, you might very well get a growth rate that's "locally undefined" - which is all perfectly logical because there's no coral there.

You also might want to consider blowing up a fractal balloon. It a twist on the oft-cited related rates problem, and the solution is just about as straightforward. The important point is that the intuition is just as applicable, and most of nature's balloons are fractal.

You see, since nature has to follow the laws of mathematics and vice-versa, even very high-level math usually has very simple and intuitive explanations. Which is why visualizing the problems, mathematical operations, etc. can often make math MUCH easier than just using a purely formal/symbol approach. (And more useful.) Perhaps not too surprisingly, this was Benoit Mandlebrot's approach.

If I still haven't answered your question: "At what fractional does the fractional derivative does the non-smoothness make the fractional derivative locally undefined?" - then let me just say that it's the same as non-fractional integration. You're really not doing anything different, spatially speaking. And the formalism only describes what's going on spatially, so if you try to measure the volume of a surface or something like that, you'll have problems. Just so long as you realize what you're actually doing, there should be no surprises. And one more thing: notice that integration has a region of integration, but differentiation doesn't. That's why you have to add that "C"(integration constant) back in when you reverse it (and why the "C"'s on the other side of the equation). Same holds true for fractional integration, only the "C" might be a function of fractional dimension. (In a way, the "C" represents information lost in the projection.) Singleton pattern revision

I understand that you wanted to clean up the samples and consolidate into one language (Java), but as a developer myself, I enjoyed seeing the different examples.

The C# sample comes in handy, and it was interesting to see how simple it is to implement in Ruby.

Is trimming the samples really the best solution? Not everyone has a Java background.

Traction (engineering)

I've reverted your bold changes , reasons

• There is a proposal (see the talk page to merge 2 other articles into the page) please read that - adding both would go to form a fairly broad article.
• The article had clear (and numerous references) to the commonly accepted meaning of the word "traction" including dictionary and engineering handbook definitions. When I found the article it read " traction is a vector vector field defined over the surface of an object describing the force distribution over the surface" if there is an alternative definition such as this please bring it up on the talk page - don't delete the other obvious meanings - the pressure definition seems to be describing "traction force distribution" or "traction pressure"FengRail (talk) 16:02, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

As far as I can tell what you describe may be the "traction vector" [1]

I'd suggest an addition something like "In tensor analysis the meaning of traction is further extended to be the force exerted per unit area, with units of pressure, and named the traction vector.

Personally I think there may be a good case for a separate article and disambig - with a page Traction (tensor) or Traction (finite element), or maybe Traction (finite element, engineering) - as the two definitions are quite different in scope of topic. Gaussian copulas

I read the article and don't understand why/how copulas are useful. I can represent the covariance of a multivariate Gaussian distribution with a covariance matrix; this is very natural. What do I gain by transforming a random variable to a multivariate random uniform and then using a copula? It seems like added complexity? Note that the Manual of style (Mathematics) gives explicit guidance on the notation to be used for matrix transposes:

For a matrix transpose, use

• (html): X^T – not X^T
• (Latex): $X^{\mathrm {T} }\;$ – not $X^{T}\;$; nor $X^{\top }\;$.

Nice job

Nice job on the lead of covariance and contravariance of vectors. It is very nice altogether, but I have a couple of fussy little questions (of very little actual consequence) about the edit:

1. First of all, I noticed that you got rid of the "system of rigid rods" in favor of just calling it a basis. As a lecturer, I have found the rigid rods analogy to be quite helpful in communicating to students of different backgrounds. So I am somewhat reluctant to abandon this analogy altogether from the lead, in the interests of making the article as accessible as possible, but I defer to your judgment if you think otherwise. (I admit, the new version reads much more cleanly.)

2. The idea flow of the first two sentence of the "vectors" bullet point seems a little backwards to me. Would it be possible to say that the components of the vector vary oppositely, followed by saying that they contra-vary? This would seem to make the point clearer.

Re (1): I seriously doubt someone will be able to understand covariance and contravariance effectively without being comfortable with the word "basis". (I could see arguments against this, but one certainly couldn't have a deep 2+-dimensional understanding of the topic without it.) That's why I dropped it. I'm open to discussion, though :-)

Re (2): The intro really needs some diagrams. Feel free to try rewording; I agree that throwing "contra-vary" in before defining it is sub-optimal. I was having trouble describing varying the "other way" clearly and not incorrectly. —Ben FrantzDale (talk) 01:37, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Silly title

Hi,

there is a possibility to change the title of Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace. We will not be able to call it "Eigenanalysis", as you suggested, as our only possibility to get consensus (and to avoid other changes in the future) is to follow the literature, which almost always uses "Eigenvalues and eigenvectors" for similar articles or textbook chapters.

Would you mind to give us your opinion? Do you agree to use "Eigenvalues and eigenvectors", the same title used in the literature? Without your support, the title would probably remain as silly as it was when MarcelB612 wrote it was silly. Please answer in Talk:Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace. Thank you

Pruning code examples

I'd like to share with you my displeasure in the pruning of code examples from numerous different articles - specifically from articles in the software design pattern category.

• The best examples were not necessarily selected to be retained
• No attempt to gather consensus for such sweeping changes were made
• Implementation and limitations of design patterns in different languages are no longer demonstrated or discussed
• Numerous contradictions and errors to several articles were introduced due references to specific examples not being thoroughly cleaned up
• Articles were not removed from categories that are no longer applicable to the articles due to removal of examples (e.g. 'Articles with example %s code')
• As a result, the changes were degrading to the quality of several of the articles.

Although I certainly appreciate your intent and agree that just listing examples for the sake of listing examples isn't help... I think your implementation left a lot to be desired. Instead of bringing the hammer down to knock a bunch of content from multiple articles based strictly on mechanical criteria that isn't necessarily accepted communal editorial policy, make specific and well thought out edits that take into account the benefit of your change in the context of that specific article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.193.73.21 (talk) 03:54, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

I agree the changes were draconian; in truth, I was intentionally being harsh. Consensus was developed earlier and a cleanup was done making the design-patterns pages not be a compendium of examples. Unfortunately, these pages are a magnet for everyone's favorite language, which isn't appropriate. While some pages definitely deserve mention across a range of languages, most are designed primarily to solve specific problems in strongly-typed object-oriented garbage-collected languages, so anything beyond Java (which I've actually never used so it's not my bias) is extraneous. I would argue that, while I did leave things dangling, I improved the pages from being a rat's nest of pet languages. My hope is that, having started Wikibook pages for each, that will act as a sink to satisfy people's passion for providing examples in Objective Scala.NET On Rails or whatever. —Ben FrantzDale (talk) 14:25, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

Digital number

I am having trouble understanding your creation of the redirect Digital number and bolding the term in Analog-to-digital converter‎. Digital number neither has that as a meaning not is it discussed in that article as a topic. Can you explain this? SpinningSpark 23:10, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

At least in talk of digital image sensors, "digital number" describes the number that comes out of digitization. For example, a pixel may have 10432 electrons in it out of a possible 25000 electrons, so after A2D conversion you'd get an 8-bit digital number of 106. —Ben FrantzDale (talk) 13:57, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

The output of an A2D is a digital number, there is no argument about that, but I still struggle to see the sense of redirecting it to A2D. The output of an air pump is air, but we would not redirect air to that article. A reader typing digital number into the search box is rather more likely to be looking for numerical digit or decimal number. I suggest a redirect to one of those articles is more appropriate. I would not like to see these improvements reverted. I did look for redirects and didn't see one; still do not see one. Gauss–Newton algorithm

Hello Ben. You have added the derivation of Gauss-Newton method with this edit. I removed it, because the derivation is already present, in a section towards the end of the article. I think it makes more sense to start with the statement of the method, then an example, then only later to go in the full derivation. Otherwise it becomes too much for readers to take. NURBS

Hi there! Thanks for the nice work on the illustration of NURBS circles in 3D. I immediately recognized it as matplotlib output. I was looking at the code in an attempt to learn about NURBS; when testing it I discovered a few problems. Is this the code you used to generate the image? The code seems to contain some cruft. For example, the variables arcNURBS and Pw are each set once without being used, and there are a few lines of commented code which purpose isn't clear and which may cause confusion. When the plot is generated, the cone is incorrectly scaled, it completely dwarfs the circle. If you have the real code used to generate the image, it would help others to post it. It is the code I used. I left in other cruft that I'd made along the way. I forget what it was for. Re-running it, I see the scaling too, and I'm not sure why.
