Regarding comments edit

Regarding your removal of comments (including the one I left a week ago); since you didn't bother archiving, and further, since you tried to hide it behind a "minor" edit with no edit summary, this smacks of attempting to whitewash things (and is arguably vandalism). Fortunately, you can't change the history of your talk page, so I'll note it there. Fourohfour 13:36, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Images, sockpuppets and blanking (oh my) edit

Hi London UK/EGC

Image sources edit

You have recently uploaded the image Image:Basil Brush.jpg, stating that it is a copyright image used fairly in the article Basil Brush.

There is already an image there, from the BBC themselves. The image you have used - which you say is provided by Google - is actually ripped from here. It is very impolite to steal images from the web pages of others. People don't like it. They write letters to complain. The letters annoy the Foundation who own Wikipedia, and the Foundation starts to look at banning "fair use" images (they're banned from other version of the Wikipedia already). That spoils things for everybody.

Please stop uploading images to Wikipedia. It is clear that you don't understand copyright and licencing issues. I and others have offered to explain and help, but you just blank the talk page - both this one and the previous one at User talk:EGC. We genuinely do want to help you, but if you don't want to be helped, then at least stop the actions that several of your fellow editors think border on vandalism and have written to you about.

Sockpuppetry edit

Now, on a related note, you are editing from two accounts - User:London UK and User:EGC. Whilst it is not forbidden to do so, the Wikipedia policy on sockpuppets can be summed up as:

You appear to be using your former EGC account to continue to upload images that you have been warned about or images with incorrect copyright details. You appear to be using the two accounts to make it hard for other editors to follow what you have been doing and why.

Neither of these are acceptable reasons for using a sockpuppet.

I urge you to give up editing from one or other of your two accounts in the interests of transparency.

Blanking your talk pages edit

Finally, your talk page is your talk page - you may do as you wish with it. However, if you receive a warning about something you are doing wrong, the general consensus is that you should not remove that warning. If you must remove the warning, hiding what you are doing is also against consensus (if you like to keep your talk page clear, try following the advice at Wikipedia:How to archive a talk page). It also gets you angry comments like above. Remember, you can't hide the history of a page - it is possible to see what you have removed.

Once again, I really really urge you to get in touch with someone - anyone - here on Wikipedia and ask them for advice. Here, for the third time, is the standard welcome message. Follow some of the links and read up about Wikipedia. Join the Boot Camp. Put the Help Me message up. Get involved!

Welcome! edit

Hello, AxG/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Again, welcome!  ➨ REDVERS 14:01, 12 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removing information from articles edit

Regarding your edit to Scottish Television. Please don't remove information from articles with no reason. This may be considered vandalism.

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

Image Tagging Image:Zante.JPG edit

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Zante.JPG. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. -SCEhardT 20:08, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image copyright problem with Image:Zante1.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Zante1.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. -SCEhardT 20:10, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Fair use" images edit

As previously noted, Wikipedia editors are not supposed to use Fair use image on their user pages. To do so is a Copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use and Wikipedia:Logos for further information.

I have removed the images from your user page. Please contact me on my talk page if you need any help or advice over image use on Wikipedia. Thanks. ➨ REDVERS 20:36, 7 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

BBC vs British Broadcasting Corporation edit

Please do not unilaterally move articles to a different title without discussing the change on the article's talk page and gaining a consensus first. The general consensus is that an article on Wikipedia should be listed under the title it is most known by - in the case of the BBC, worldwide it is known as "the BBC" more than it is known by the full name. There is no need to make article titles "more formal". Thanks. As ever, but in somewhat forlorn hope, I again extend the hand of friendship and offer you any help or advice I can possibly provide via my talk page. Best regards ➨ REDVERS 14:15, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

frivolous/incorrect/rude edits edit

London Portal edit

Hi London UK!

Your user name caught my eye and I can't help thinking that you are one of many Wikipedians who could help to increase participation with the London Portal, in particular the suggesting/voting sections for articles and pictures; and suggestions/implementation of the "Did you know" sections. P:L is now a featured portal, but we would really like to see more people participate in the selection and election of showcase articles and/or pictures, and with the general maintenance of the portal. If you would like to contribute, visit the portal or give me a shout if you'd like to take over some more serious tasks!

Welcome to Esperanza! edit

Welcome, AxG/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in April, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3 edit

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

Fair use images edit

Hi London UK!

Please don't used copyright images on your user page. "Fair use" of images to which others hold the copyright only applies to images used in the article namespace.

If you'd like further information, see Wikipedia:Fair use criteria - point 9 on that page says:

Fair use images should only be used in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. They should be linked, not inlined, from talk pages when they are the topic of discussion. This is because it is the policy of the Wikimedia Foundation to allow an unfree image only if no free alternative exists and only if it significantly improves the article it is included on. All other uses, even if legal under the fair use clauses of copyright law, should be avoided to keep the use of unfree images to a minimum. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis if there is a broad consensus that doing so is necessary to the goal of creating a free encyclopedia (like the templates used as part of the Main Page).

Thanks for your understanding. ➨ ЯΞDVΞRS 10:47, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

A short Esperanzial update edit

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.
