Beginner

I am a fan of Wikipedia; I frequently refer my college biology students to Wikipedia as a source of simple information. I am attempting to learn how to publish articles.

I found what I thought to be a quite notable person (completely unrelated to me in any way). When I search for information about him all I get was numerous quotes, references to his many, many newspaper articles, and many requests for further information about his across the Internet, but no other detailed information besides a reference in a listing of newspaper writers.

When I attempted to start a stub about this author my attempt was deleted due to a "lack of notability".

I don't understand the criteria for "notability", someone who is widely quoted and frequently searched seems to be notable.

Are my articles being deleted by overzealous or tyrannical editors on power trips or am I missing important information about the writing process?

It is essential you cite reliable sources for the content of your article. This is particularly important when adding or changing any facts or figures and helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. For help on formatting, it may be easier for you to use the citation tool. Also, please feel free to visit the New contributors' help page. There a lot of useful infomation there, as well as people willing to help. For examples of what a good new article consists of, please check out Wikipedia:Articles for creation. You can follow the directions and have an editor work with you on making a good article, or you could just look at some recent requests there and look at the difference between accepted and declined articles. There are some very big points to keep in mind:

Articles require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject.

  • Significant
References that are about the subject - it is in the title or chapter heading. Not passing mentions. Not directory listings. Not just any old thing that happens to have the name in it. Several of them - not just one. It must be notable.
  • Reliable sources
Something that is 'generally trusted' to tell the truth. A major newspaper. A factual, widely-published book. High-quality mainstream publications with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Not blogs, not myspace. Verifiable.
  • Independent
Nothing written by the subject or paid-for by the subject. Not their website. Not a press-release. Not primary sources.

If you need anything else, create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question. Also you can talk to us live, with this or this. The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello. Also, something to keep in mind in case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Best of luck to you! Avicennasis @ 21:51, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to WikiProject Articles for creation! We are a group of editors who work together on the Articles for creation and Images for upload pages.

A few tips that you might find helpful:

  • Please take time to fully read the reviewers' instructions before reviewing submissions.
  • The project's discussion board is the best place to ask for help or advice. You might like to watchlist this page, and you are encouraged to take part in any discussion that comes up.

Once again, welcome to the project. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:14, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

{{talkback}} Set Sail For The Seven Seas 326° 28' 15" NET 21:45, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

No prob. I keep them here to show I got them, and they are eventually archived. I reply to them just so I know whether or not I have looked at them yet. (Makes a bigger difference when you have a lot of items.) Anything that doesn't end with my name needs looked at. :) Avicennasis @ 00:02, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Come to think of it, I tend to do a similar thing and it lets me know if you've read the message yet. I noticed that you used {{VIEWINGUSER}} on your talkpage. It still needs a bit of sorting out before it is ready. I can let you know when it is up and running. Also, you may need to raise the toolbar you use on your userpage since it blocks out the text at the top of the page. This can be done by setting all the "top" parameters to -30px or something around that value.

{{talkback}} Set Sail For The Seven Seas 205° 0' 15" NET 13:40, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Toolbar rasied - looked ok to me in Opera before, but after reading your comment I checked it in Firefox, and yikes! I was using the {{VIEWINGUSER}} - I saw it on your page and thought it was nifty, however it seemed a little buggy, so for now I commented it out. I would like to know when it's fully functional. Avicennasis @ 08:52, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
The toolbar is much better placed, the top bit of text is easier to read now. I've looked over the {{VIEWINGUSER}} template and it seems like the only way to get it working is to program the variable in the same way the others have been done. It's definitely possible, but I think only the developers have enough access to do it. I guees I'll have to ask them to create it.

Though you have lost dignity in my eyes, I would wish that you try to get me started. I have tried to edit some articles, but I am unsure whether I am doing it right since I have nobody to guide me. Please be that person. Codedon (talk) 21:05, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

I would be happy to try and assist you if you think I can help. I will state now that I will be on- and off-wiki for the next week or so, so my edits and assistance may seem sporadic. As I mentioned on your talk page, it seems there are no edits outside your user spaces, so any edits you tried to make to any articles seem like they did not save. As such, I am not sure what articles you were trying to change, or what that change may have been. Can you give me an example of a change you were trying to make or would like to make? Such as "I would like to add XXX to article ZZZ"? This will tell me what changes your are having trouble with, and give me a better idea on how to help. Else, if you have any questions you would like answered, I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. Just let me know how I can best help you. Avicennasis @ 21:16, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm currently interested in editing articles about small villages in India, including Gumtala, Littran, Malri, Chak Vendhal, Laroi, Patara, India, Sang Dhesian, and Sadakpur. Codedon (talk) 22:10, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
That's great! Those articles seem "stubby", or short, so they can definately use some more content. I am not too familar with India, so I am not sure what information could be added. A way to find out, though, is by using categories. For example, If we look at the Littran article and hit edit, to get the content as seen here, we see at the bottom that this is linked into Category:Punjab (India) geography stubs. So, if we visit that category, we can find longer articles and see what other people have decided to add. (An example of a longer article would be Garhshanker.} Another great resource for these pages and similar, is Wikipedia:WikiProject India. You could ask members there for ideas as well, and even join if you want! I hope this helps a little - forgive me if I have covered things here you may already know, but it's good to get the basics in. Do you have any ideas on what we can add to these articles? I am sure we can expand them together. :) Avicennasis @ 08:49, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Am I closer?

I am still trying to process these procedures. Could you briefly glance at my talk page (Brhebert) and tell me if this is getting close enough to notability (I am still searching for further references)?

What is involved with creating stubs? I am particularly interested in scientific stubs, such as animal species.

B. Hebert (talk) 07:12, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Well, you are off to a good start. I have added some references, and would like a few more "solid" ones before taking it to mainspace. You can look over it and see how the references are formatted; I know it may seem complicated, but I just used the cite tool and it did all that for me. I will let you know if I find anything more. Avicennasis @ 08:05, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Now I am impressed! I will continue to try and find more "notability". My purpose for this was to familiarize myself with the procedure (and hopefully to write other articles) and this seemed like a reasonable starter project.

Did you dig up any additional cites that I missed or did the software find these links and cross references?

Brhebert (talk) 17:07, 3 April 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Brhebert (talkcontribs) 17:06, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

I attempted to make additions to my references on my Talk Page, but could not understand the procedures for inserting additional references. How do I insert references and get them formatted like previous cites? Don't necessarily make the changes as I would like to know how to edit correctly. Thanks! Brhebert (talk) 00:18, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

I was unable to find any better sources for this.. I will ask for a second opinion from a few editors later on whether or not this is ready to be an article. :) I will let you know what happens. Avicennasis @ 20:25, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I had considered that, but it's a weak link... and if the user just wanted to back up an edit request, then why wait? Also, most Sockmasters who aren't caught yet almost always use their main account, and here it seems like the "main" account only has 42 edits? It seems I was grasping at straws... Even if the change is made, it's nothing drastic or controversial, so there really is no need to stack voting with Sockpuppets. You know what they say:  CheckUser is not for fishing. But it is good to know that someone else had the same thought at first - maybe I am not losing my mind after all. Thanks for the heads-up. Avicennasis @ 08:29, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
It's good to know I'm not the only one who thought of this either, but yeah I guess you're right. Nothing major here. It seems that the request was declined after all. Well, see you around! --JokerXtreme (talk) 09:50, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

Your monobook

Hi Avicennasis!

I made a small adjustment to your monobook.js, as the speedy template made it show up in the CAT:SD. Hope it didn't break anything. Regards, decltype (talk) 12:00, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Nope, still works fine. Thanks! Avicennasis @ 15:42, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Removal of the Category:Flagged articles

You have been systematically removing the [[Category:Flagged articles]] that I have place on article talk pages where the problem with the article still exists. This is the wrong procedure. In the case of lack of or no references this means that the article is still a problem and thus potential deletion candidate and the category is still valid. Please do not remove the category without looking to see if the problem has been removed. --Triwbe (talk) 14:27, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

The articles I removed all had references, as I recall, though I may have over-looked a few of them. A good deal of these articles were tagged since 2008 with many edits since then - If there is still a concern with these articles, they should be taken to AfD. A lot of these were up for deletion before, either PROD or CSD, and survived. Avicennasis @ 15:41, 8 April 2010 (UTC) Italic text added at 16:42, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
I noticed you have reverted or re-added pages to this category. I just want to let you know that I will not "revert yout revert". Feel free to re-add all the pages to the category in question if you feel the need - I will not consider it bad practice if you rollback my edits. :) Keep up the positive contributions. Avicennasis @ 20:31, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Some removals I agreed with. I also think there is a difference between badly sourced articles and articles that should be deleted, otherwise I would AfD or PROD. These (and many other articles)need better sourcing, not deleting (and no I do not have time to do it myself :-). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Triwbe (talkcontribs) 20:35, 8 April 2010

Removal of the Category:Flagged articles (redux)

Hello, Avicennasis/MainArchive ...

I noticed that Category:Flagged articles had been depopulated, and that you had modified Template:Flag-article ... I reverted your change, and was surprised that it was not repopulated ... then I noticed your conversation with Triwbe, and your edit history showed that you had manually removed the Cat from the ninety-some articles that were flagged ... I think that some of them are still dubious (e.g., the only attempt at WP:RS is an {{Imdb}} link) ... I get it that you're an inclusionist, and I'm not going to search all of them to find and tag ones that I think do not belong, but the next time you do a mass purge, please comment on the Template/Category talk page ... BTW, thnx fer using the boilerplate message on the article talk pages when you removed the Cat. :-)

Happy Editing! — 71.166.147.78 (talk · contribs) 19:59, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

No problem. Since you and Triwbe seem to be the main users of this template, I will make use of discussions before mass removal. (Or just improve the articles myself.) My edit to the template was to attempt to suppress the category to Wikipedia Talk space, but it failed.. >.> Avicennasis @ 20:25, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Re: School / Business Vandalism

It is still done, although in order to make such a block, we have to verify that the sysadmin is in fact a sysadmin; it's next to impossible to do this on-wiki, which is why it's not commonly done. If they'd like some assistance with this, they can email the functionaries list at functionaries-en lists.wikimedia.org or myself directly at hersfoldwiki gmail.com. Make sure that they know to do so from the email address issued to them by their school or school district, and to include the name of their school in the email they send so we can verify their identity. Thanks for letting me know! Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:40, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks again. I have passed this info to the sysadmin, (who had emailed me from his school -linked email), so you (or ArbCom) may be getting an email soon. :) Avicennasis @ 20:25, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of File:Snowplow.jpg

Just to let you know, at the time you nominated this for deletion it didn't meet the criteria for speedy deletion, as the image on commons had a different name. If I'd deleted it then it would have created a broken image link in the articles it was used in. So I updated the link in those articles and deleted. Next time it would be good if you did that (updating the links). No big deal though. Cheers, Peter 23:15, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello Avicennasis. Are you requesting a change to this protected article? If so, the change needs to be fully written out, and it should clearly have consensus. It should also be fully sourced. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 22:36, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Batiatus

Re: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Batiatus - Yes, I did want a redirect, which I thought was clear from the way the "article" was written. Thanks for making the redirect, though I'm not sure why it says my request was declined when it was not, nor why I'm not allowed to make simple redirects (I guess potential vandalism in that regard). Thanks again.--75.57.215.117 (talk) 19:37, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

The request was declined because it was listed in the articles section, although it was not an article. Redirects should be at Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Redirects. Since approving it as an article but then making it a redirect would have caused some issues and confusion, so it was simpler to decline and make manually. :) And yes, redirect vandalism is a problem, such as this one as a redirect to the Darth Vader article. About the wikiproject userpage template on Chzz's talkpage

Thanks! :) Avicennasis @ 15:23, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
You're welcome. Question: I was just admiring the work on userpage and noticed that it did place the appropriate WP category (meaning I am a member there) - can that be embedded into my userpage template? Morenooso (talk) 15:27, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
You mean having the userbox automatically add the user into Category:WikiProject California participants? Yep, that's do-able. Do you want me to add it to User:Morenooso/WikiProject CA Delta userbox? Avicennasis @ 18:41, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Done. :) Let me know if you need anything else. Avicennasis @ 22:13, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
Could I have five twenties, two tens and a five out of spare change? Seriously, I just looked at my userpage and it doesn't show the CA Delta WP cat. However, I can see that you added it to the template and it shows up on the sub userpage. I wonder why it doesn't transfer over to my userpage? Morenooso (talk) 03:10, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Huh. Looking at your userpage, it does show you to be in Category:WikiProject California participants, and your name shows on this list. This category will not automatically show in the edit window, but if you go to Special:Preferences and enable HotCat under the gadgets section, it shows all the categories a page is in at the bottom. :) Avicennasis @ 03:17, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
I must be a dodo. Yes, I am WP:CA but the WP:CA Delta is separate sub WP. Other CA sub WPs have the member cat automatically added when the userbox is placed on the userpage. Maybe WP:CA Delta does not have the cat set up. --Morenooso (talk) 04:09, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Correct - as far as I could see, there was no delta cat, which is why I used the top level. Since the member page only lists two people, I don't think a cat would be needed yet (others tend to frown on very small cats). Avicennasis @ 05:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Your transcluded sig

Hi Avicennasis, I saw your note at the Help desk about de-transcluding your sig page. It's not a big deal now that you've stopped 'cluding it but there are still 230 examples out there that someone else (new) might happen to see and think what a great idea it is, then have their first unpleasant brush with "no, we're not discussing, these are the rules here". Two years ago I signed up for Auto Wiki Browser but I've never used it. Would you mind if I ran through those transclusions and subst:'ed them? It would be good practice for me, it aligns with policy and of course I would take sole responsibility for the results and fix any problems. Hi. You placed an Abuse Response notice on User talk:66.4.233.28. I have just blocked that IP for 55 hours: the page at Wikipedia:Abuse response/66.4.233.28 didn't give the name of an investigator, so I have just made a note of the block there. Hope that's the right thing to do. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:30, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

AvicAWB

Hi, you probably haven't noticed that your new User:AvicAWB account is totally crowding out Recent Changes from new editors. As it's now got 10 edits, maybe you could wait 4 days before editing further, so that edits then don't appear in that list. Rd232 talk 08:37, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Yikes! That totally had not occurred to me! I have halted. Thank you for the heads up! Avicennasis @ 08:44, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
No problem. It probably wouldn't have occurred to me either :). A separate AWB account is a good idea though, this hiccup aside. Rd232 talk 08:47, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Please do not change wiki source from legible HTML entities like ∇ to characters that are barely legible in the edit box or diff area like ∇ because this makes it very difficult for subsequent editors to figure out what character they are dealing with. This change was made to the Electric potential article. Jc3s5h (talk) 11:18, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

My apologizes. I had assumed that the actually characters would be better than the HTML, but did not think that some PC's may not be able to handle the character set. Also, while I found the changes helpful, per the rules of AWB, edits doing only this should be avoided, so I will be adjusting my settings to prevent this. Thanks! :) Avicennasis @ 20:08, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

AWB

According to the AWB "Rules", edits such as [3] that just make trivial formatting changes should be avoided. — Carl (CBM · talk) 11:47, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I was aware that things like white space removal ans such should be avoided, but I had not thought that HTML to Unicode would also be considered such. It's been a while since I have used AWB, so I will have to review the rules and guidelines again. Thanks for the heads up. :) Avicennasis @ 20:08, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Oblivion Lost

The Ukrainian Wikipedia has this photo since 2007 (http://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%98%D0%A1%D0%A3-152-2). That's not good enough for you!? Oblivion Lost (talk) 13:09, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

If the image is in the Public Domain, some explanation would be needed. The tag currently used, PD-russia, is deprecated. I cannot read the information on that you linked to, but if they have an explanation on why it is in the public domain, it would be best to translate that. Else, upload the file to Commons and put the notice there in whatever language is more comfortable. Also, I was not the original tagger of the image, so you may want to address the first individual as well. :) Hope this helps. Avicennasis @ 16:09, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Good grief :P

Yep. That covers every wiki, unless I missed one. Really not useful for the most part, although it does help out a little bit with my anti-vandal work at meta:Small Wiki Monitoring Team. :) Avicennasis @ 16:43, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Question

Hi. When someone vandalizes an article such as this [4] how does one give them a formal warning? I'm assuming only admins can do that. Just wondering.

Thanks, JS —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimsteele9999 (talkcontribs) 11:38, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello! In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Now, when it comes to warnings, if the edit is clear cut vandalism, anyone can place {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} on the page, and it will generate the text below (bwtween the lines)

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. Please use the sandbox for any test edits you would like to make, and read the welcome page to learn more about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

To mention a specific article, like Special education, you would use: {{subst:uw-vandalism1|Special education}} And get:

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, at least one of your recent edits, such as the one you made to Special education, did not appear to be constructive and has been reverted or removed. You can see the full list of warnings here. There are levels, as well. If the user has recieved {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} already, and continued to vandalize (be sure the check timestamps!) you can place {{subst:uw-vandalism2}} on their talk page. There is also a 3 and a 4. If they continue to vandalize after the final warning (number 4) then you should report them to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism, or WP:AIV for short. An admin will be along shortly to block them.

Again, Any user can warn another user if their edits are very clearly destructive. Only admins can block a user, though. Hope that helps! let me know if you need anything else! Avicennasis @ 22:38, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
