Wham Paymaster Robbery edit

Could perhaps go back and review again your rewrite of Wham Paymaster Robbery. I mention this because of the close conjunction of two or three puzzlers:

"suspension" vs. "suspicion"
"prejudges" vs. "prejudices"
"a series of witness"

and there was at least one other small nit, but I've just spent a couple hours on my "wiki-drama" addiction and am too befuddled to remember, having finally backed up to here. Anyway, maybe that paragraph or two was written too late in the wee hours?  :-) Shenme (talk) 22:23, 11 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Problem with DYK hook you just promoted edit

WP:ADMINACCT edit

Per WP:ADMINACCT, "Subject only to the bounds of civility, avoiding personal attacks, and reasonable good faith, editors are free to question or to criticize administrator actions. Administrators are expected to respond promptly and civilly to queries about their Wikipedia-related conduct and administrator actions and to justify them when needed." I am questioning your administrative action, and I would like you to respond promptly and civilly to my query about your Wikipedia-related conduct. You recently promoted a DYK to the main page that was problematic. This was pointed out before you promoted the DYK hook on the main page errors section. You had previously said that part of the procedure for promoting DYK hooks was reviewing the main page error section. Did you fail to do that, miss the comment on the promoted hook or decide the comment was not relevant, or something else? Thanks. Hipocrite (talk) 17:46, 17 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Let's move this conversation over to my talk page. Normally, the Main Page would have been updated by DYKUpdateBot, which does not currently check WP:ERRORS. The promotion of a DYK set from the queue to the Main Page is fairly mechanical, and it's unconstructive to question "administrative action"s when volunteer admins are simply stepping in for a lazy bot. DYK needs more admin help, not less. Shubinator (talk) 04:36, 19 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Shub, Don't pay too much attention to Hipo. This is just part of his pattern of either twisting or manufacturing facts and then using these false claims to pick a fight. In this case he is referring to this comment by me from April 30 (strange how Hipo never provides edit links). As an examination of the comment shows, I did not claim that "reviewing the main page error section" was "part of the procedure for promoting DYK hooks" as Hipo claims. The referenced comment instead discusses an after the fact review of a separate complaint which found no reports at either Talk:Main Page or Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors during a time period in which Hipo claims a problem was occurring. You spotted the other big falsehood in Hipo's message in that I was not "promoting DYK hooks" as Hipo claims but instead manually performing a task normally performed by DYKUpdateBot, a fact supported by the specific actions performed and my edit summaries ([2], [3], [4]). Combining these false claims in Hipo's latest comment with the fact his actions have been previously described as "an attempt at hounding an editor out of an area of the project because of a personal dislike" and "attempting to hound people off the project for doing things you personally dislike" it is becoming increasingly difficult to believe he is acting in good faith and thus Wikipedia:Our social policies are not a suicide pact clearly applies. --Allen3 talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)--Allen3 talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Any chance you could throw together an update or two? You don't need to worry too much about error-checking - I'm doing the error checking as I load them into the Queue. The next update is only three hours away now and the prep area is still empty. Gatoclass (talk) 08:34, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

John Horton Slaughter edit

Thank you. Yes, I will add more inlined references. I'll start with those two I've been using and then add yours as well. Btw, I wonder is he was related to George Webb Slaughter? Apparently not, even though they were both early ranchers.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:24, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Also off topic but I see you are based in Plano--how wonderful. Are you able to take pictures there for Wikimedia Commons? Within the county or not? I love Texas and hope to return soon! Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 21:25, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I haven't seen that film, so I am not sure what you mean. I have removed the tag now because almost everything is referenced (except for his children, but hopefully I will fix that soon). One reference says he grew up on a Southern plantation, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it would be anything on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. Perhaps someone at the Museum of the Confederacy would know. By the way, do you know if we could create a succession box for the sheriffs after him? (It looks like he was the first one in the county?) The current sheriff is this guy. It's a detail, but I feel like it helps a lot to get more details and move away from folklore, back to reality, for an encyclopedia.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:04, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I also don't have access to the two books you mentioned. And I have moved the paragraph about poker to the talkpage until we can find some references for it.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:13, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
No, I have no access to those books on Google Books. It's a no-preview affair I'm afraid. I am in Australia at the moment--perhaps that explains why. Do you think the current sheriff should have his own page, or would that get deleted due to lack of notability? I love details, but I know not everyone does. He's also been in the news.Zigzig20s (talk) 23:54, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hello. I raised some concerns at Talk:John Horton Slaughter that I'd like you to look at. Basically, someone added info with inlined references today, and they are also using a reference which looks invalid to me (a travel website). It is dispiriting to see some of my work reversed. Let us know what you think. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:32, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Can you please take this to Talk:John Horton Slaughter? I still think his Desert USA link is invalid. It may claim to cite other sources on its website, but it could be completely made up. It's not an academic book or journal article, nor is it a newspaper article, etc. So, there may be grounds to simply delete the paragraph he added on Slaughter as a poker player. I don't mind having this info if we can find good, reliable sources though. It would be very interesting to learn more about the history of poker (which I still need to learn how to play!). But this really needs to be backed up by good sources. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 15:43, 9 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Adding links to specific pages and having a company page edit

Hello,

I am Andrew with GameStakers (https://www.gamestakers.com/), a game review website that also interviews game developers. On every wiki page for a video game, there are links to reviews for it. Apparently, permission is needed to post the links. My website is about writing reviews and I would like to link the reviews through the wiki pages for the corresponding pages. Additionally, is it allowed to make a Wikipedia page for GameStakers? It isn't meant to advertise the site, but more to just explain about it.

Could you please direct me to the right person in charge. We published such articles at some other sources but the authorship belongs to our Company. That's why I got the publication permission [Ticket#2014081410006267]. How can I recover my publication?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry it has taken so long to respond, but when you decide to involve a previously uninvolved admin who had not edited during the five days previous to your message you run the risk that he may not return in a timely manner. I do not have WP:OTRS so I can not confirm if your ticket number provides the needed permissions to overcome the copyright concerns that prompted the original deletion. Looking at the deleted text, copyright considerations are not the only issue with this deleted article. As noted by the second admin to asked to undelete the article, the subject appears to no secondary sources while blurbs such as "We maintain a consistency in power generation because there is never a limit of waste material" make it clear the text was pulled from an advertising blurb and lacks the tone needed for an encyclopedia article. It makes no sense to undelete the article as no longer violating copyright just to turn around and immediately redelete it for one of its other critical flaws (Wikipedia:Spam or Wikipedia:Notability). As a result, I feel I must decline your request. --Allen3 talk 11:41, 5 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Regarding The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls DYK edit

Hi Allen3. Thanks for promoting the DYK nom for The Idolmaster Cinderella Girls. It appears the hook is in prep area 1 right now, which seems like it will be moved to queue 1 and consequently be pushed to the main page on January 8 at 12:00 UTC. I am wondering if you could perhaps consider moving it to prep area 3, so that it will be on the main page on January 9 at 12:00 UTC instead to coincidence with the premiere of the anime adaptation? Thanks! -- クラウド668 22:17, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Cloud668: The reason I choose the hook dealing with Korea instead of the one dealing with the game's commercial relase in Japan is to minimize concerns about WP:NOTADVERTISING. Moving the hook as you suggest undoes most of this consideration and could place the hook in jeopardy of being pulled due to its promotional aspects. As a result, I feel it is better to leave the hook in its current location. --Allen3 talk 22:51, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the prompt reply. I understand your concerns with WP:NOTADVERTISING, but I don't see how having it coincide with the anime adaptation's airing time can be considered advertising, especially if the chosen hook is objectively written and does not pertain to the anime release at all. Personally, I also feel the chosen hook sounds more advertisement-like (to the South Korean market) than the first hook in the nomination regarding the Consumer Affairs Agency, if NOTAD is an issue. -- クラウド668 23:13, 5 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Forgotten DYK nomination? edit

My nomination of Template:Did you know nominations/List of terrorist attacks in France was passed back on 12 Jan, but it hasn't been touched since then - has it been overlooked or forgotten about? Prioryman (talk) 19:24, 1 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) I think overlooked is probably the right diagnosis: the tick was near the end of the comment, and promoters are looking for easily visible ticks at the beginning/left of the line. @Yoninah:, thanks for the kind words. It was actually the drama-fest about promoting Christian themed hooks to run on Easter Sunday that led me to cut back for a time. I will need to take a brief break in a day or two however. I have several nominations that have been approved but not yet promoted currently sitting at Template talk:Did you know‎, one in the special occasion requests area for March 17. Combine this with nominations which I have reviewed and it is slowly getting harder and harder for me to build balanced sets without promoting hooks which I have had prior involvement. --Allen3 talk 18:07, 12 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

You deleted my additions to the Mexican American War. I do not revert any edited additions, but I am wondering why. I added the options of the different peoples on both sides during the conflict. I think that is valid. It is definitely controversial, which I understand if it is unwanted, but is that the reason so much content was reverted?

Beliefs acted upon by peoples at the time are historical facts today. 99% of history id Context. I believe the additions were enlightening. Please actually read what I wrote at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mexican–American_War&diff=prev&oldid=657166540

If you happen to see this, I hope you can do the update manually—you're the only one I can think of with experience taking care of this. Many thanks. I am about to post to WT:DYK to let people know the current status. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:27, 18 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Crested quetzal edit

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Crested quetzal. It is considered spamming, and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion, so any further spamming will be regarded as vandalism. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia. 209.104.250.2 (talk) 17:42, 27 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

If you are going to troll Wikipedia regulars, it would help if you performed a little fact checking before picking a template to slap on their talk pages. A check of the edit in question shows I added an internal link to an article detailing information on a technical term and not an external link as you claim. You may also find Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#What generally should be linked useful in improving your understanding of the situation. --Allen3 talk 17:59, 27 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dr Mark Mayall edit

I was passing by and looking for anything on Dr. Mark Mayall, once a fairly prominent fellow in UK Conservative circles. I found that you had deleted his page as far back as 2006? I see that when it was put up for comment that all other "deletes" were from North Americans also. Is this not rather strange? Most of us here in the UK would not profess to know sufficient about your politicians or their local importance to call for deletions. Should this not be revisited? Regards, 86.172.58.168 (talk) 18:27, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

The article at Mark Mayall which I deleted was created by User:Dragqueen.britneyrose and extolled the virtues of "britney rose the pincess of dragqueens"(sic). It showed all the signs of being either a made up story or vanity article and article contents contained no apparent connection to any UK politician. An earlier version of the article, which actually dealt with a person named Mark Mayall, was deleted via this AfD. I was uninvolved with this deletion, but looking through the discussion and at the deleted text, the primary problem was a complete lack of sourcing for the article. Wikipedia policy is clear that the responsibility for locating and providing sources is on the person(s) adding information to the article, so the location of the individuals supporting deletion in the discussion is meaningless. If you are interested in doing the research required to locate appropriate sources then you should have no problems recreating the article via Wikipedia:Articles for creation. --Allen3 talk 19:03, 28 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. User:Allen3, Reviewed and gave you a tick. But I was wondering about adding a picture to the nomination? Happy Thanksgiving to you! 7&6=thirteen () 15:00, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

7&6=thirteen, thanks for adding an image of the Arizona State Capitol to the article. A group photo of the session members probably exists, but would almost certainly reside in one of the state's archives. Arizona law requires payment of a fee for commercial use of any records or documents created or maintained with public funds. Places such as the Arizona Historical Society and Sharlot Hall Museum are covered by this restriction because they have received public funds in the past. Arizona archives also tend to not provide information about prior publication, so it can be hard determining what images are no longer under copyright. Given the difficulty in finding free images of historical Arizona events, and my personal preference to minimize fair use items, I tend not to even look for suitable images for this type of article. It is nice that you spotted a free image that is appropriate to the article. --Allen3 talk 15:20, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was pleased to find it. Too bad we can't get a group picture. Although there might be one on Flickr. User: Doug Coldwell is great at finding that sort of thing. It would be prior to 1923, so there is no copyright question.
The question still perseveres: Do you want to add the present picture to the DYK and amend the hook? 7&6=thirteen () 15:24, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
1910 Photograph of the 25th Arizona Territorial Legislature members Sharlot Hall Museum, Prescott, Arizona Here is a picture of the 25th Legislature. Given its age, it cannot be in copyright. 7&6=thirteen () 15:27, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
7&6=thirteen, actually it can easily still be under copyright. By default, unpublished works in the United States are copyrighted for 120 years from date of creation. Once a work is published the copyright is based upon the date of publication and not the date of creation (there are exceptions for works created before 1978 and not published until after 2002). It is not unusual for images to sit in archives or private collections for decades before their first publication. Based upon Wikipedia:Public domain#Unpublished works, we can not be sure the image you found is in the public domain until after 2047. The only way around this is if you can locate proof of when the image was first published. --Allen3 talk 16:07, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
Added this: 1910 Photograph of all members of the 25th Arizona Territorial Legislature Sharlot Hall Museum, Prescott, Arizona
OK. Will try to find a source for the publication. Probably some form of state yearbook? 7&6=thirteen () 16:10, 26 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Why was in Jordan removed in the Maghtas DYK ? [6] Makeandtoss (talk) 12:07, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Makeandtoss, my best guess is that the reference to your home country was removed because the phrase "in Jordon" is redundant with the rest of the information in the hook. Have you considered asking the person who performed the removal? My ability to mind read is limited and you will probably get better information if you ask the appropriate person. --Allen3 talk 12:16, 6 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Completing the noon UTC DYK update edit

Allen3, could you possibly do the cleanup on the incomplete DYK update? Right now, while the contents of Queue 1 were moved to the main page, they were also left in Queue 1, and Template:Did you know/Queue/Next wasn't incremented to Queue 2, the final two steps in the process (reversed here for narrative purposes).

I've checked the contributions log for the bot, and it looks like the bot died when attempting to mark the image file as having been included on DYK. I don't know whether you'd want to bother doing this as well, but I'm mainly concerned about incrementing Queue/Next and clearing Queue 1. I'm hoping you're around and can do both. This has been mentioned at WT:DYK#DYKUpdateBot malfunction?, so you might want to check there first. Thanks for anything you can do. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:07, 26 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Invite edit

Inviting you to review here.--MaranoFan (talk) 12:30, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

This isn't an invite. It's a request. Does this come under Wikipedia:Canvassing?  — Calvin999 12:34, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
No, since Allen was never involved with the article in any way, this can't possibly be influencing the end-decision in any way.--MaranoFan (talk) 12:37, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
The only reason you would ask someone to review your DYK is so that it appears on the main page faster, providing that Allen3 passes it. Why have you chosen only Allen3, anyway?  — Calvin999 12:41, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, the review page has been inactive for many days, might I add, you seem to misunderstand canvassing. It is common practice to ask for feedback from experienced users at the discussions. Provided, I have no previous interaction with them. Read that page again. YOU have also done this in the past.--MaranoFan (talk) 12:45, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Welcome to the world of Wikipedia. A lot of my DYK noms have taken weeks to get a review, and then several more weeks to be sent to prep. That's the way the cookie crumbles. You really need to learn to be more patient and stop asking people to review your work. Wait and be patient like the rest of us. I've never asked anyone to review a DYK for me.  — Calvin999 12:55, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, is it my fault that Meghan Trainor articles do not attract crazy attention? You generally nominate Rihanna articles for DYK's who is having a four-week run atop the hot 100 chart, whereas Meghan does not have THAT crazy popularity, especially on wiki. Please go and do some positive work now.--MaranoFan (talk) 13:14, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
That's nothing to do with it. Whoever reviews a nom may or may not have an interest. It's nothing to do with attracting attention. You get that once it's on the main page. That's the whole point of DYK.  — Calvin999 13:52, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Per this AN thread, LavaBaron is given editing restrictions on DYK. Any hook nominated or reviewed by LavaBaron must be reviewed by a second editor before it may be promoted to the main page. The restrictions are reproduced below as follows:

  1. A DYK article nomination or hook submitted by LavaBaron must be reviewed and accepted by 2 other editors before it may be promoted.
  2. Any DYK nomination reviewed by LavaBaron must also be reviewed and accepted by 1 other editor before it may be promoted.
  3. Any additional reviews by other editors, which are mandated by this restriction, shall count towards the QPQ of that editor.
  4. (To balance the maths) For each article submitted by LavaBaron to DYK, 2 QPQ reviews by LavaBaron are required, at least 1 of which shall be a nomination that had not yet been accepted by another editor.
  5. These restrictions shall initially last for a period of 3 months. At the end of the period, this restriction shall be reviewed.

Extended confirmed protection edit

Hello, Allen3. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins edit

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard.
