Hurley steel bands phased out?

Regarding your addition to the hurley (stick) article, AFAIK the steel bands on hurleys haven't been phased out. Whenever I see hurleys in school, shops or on TV, there's always bands on them. JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 18:24, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Hi John. Let me verify that one. AFAIK, the GAA started coming out against them some years back as players were getting ripped to pieces with the steel bands as they became loose. I'll get back to you on this ... Ali-oops 18:32, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Sorry didn't see this message, only came now to reply to the note you left on my talk page. Yeah, that seems okay, though since they are still around in large numbers maybe it would be better to say "the GAA want them phased out". I dunno, though, I'm not involved at all in hurling. However, I don't know if the phasing out will be successful, as the bands prevent the hurley splitting down along. I remember recently on an exchange in Spain, they got a local guy to make them some hurleys because they wanted to learn hurling. The hurleys he made were adequate, but were a different wood and had no band. Using one of them, I took a sidline ball - the moment it struck the ground it split right up the shaft. Hence the problem. Maybe some sort of moulded plastic that won't come off could... Anyway, I'm straying hopelessly off topic. Yeah, it seems fine! Cheers, JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 17:05, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)
P.S. I nominated Hurley for WP:ICOTW, if you want to support it there... :)

Hurleys and Martyn Turner

About the Martyn Turner, I think we're okay with one cartoon to show his style. What'd be better now would be to get a picture of the man himself, and a proper list of the books he's written. I was wondering though, that because the subject of the cartoon is the Iraq war, might the message be a bit unsuitable? A pic of the hurley would be nice. I've a few at home, but no digital camera. A pic of both hurling and camogie are also needed for the respective articles. JOHN COLLISON [ Ludraman] 19:15, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)
