GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go

First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.

We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns.

See you at the finish!

Hey!

Hey Airplaneman! I'm sorry about yesterday; I was really wiped out! Earlier, you let me know about improving Portal:Apple and was wondering if you'd like to revamp WP:MAC. I'd be willing to help; there's a huge pool of members and plenty of work. What do you think?--ℳøℕø 01:53, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Everyone has those days; try not to take it out on others, though :). Sure, I'll help revamp WP:MAC. First thing's first: use your bot control power to send off a notice to all active members. Airplaneman 02:02, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
All smiles here! I'll draft up a notice; I'm getting hungry so I'll do it l8r...--ℳøℕø 02:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Can you draft it? I have to go...--ℳøℕø 02:10, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
So do I. I'll do it when I can (within the next couple of days). Airplaneman 02:11, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

←Made banner:--ℳøℕø 00:45, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)That is an awesome banner. VerballyInsane 00:49, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Just a couple of minutes in Photoshop and it turned out great!--ℳøℕø 01:14, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
Great! I'll do some cleanup and updating to the project page and draft the letter below. Modify at your will. Airplaneman 01:23, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm working on that too!--ℳøℕø 01:34, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Airplaneman/Archive 11! You've listed yourself as an active member of WikiProject Macintosh, which is currently seeing very little activity. We are trying to revive the project and your help would be appreciated. To see who is active and who is not, we will be listing all active members under "status pending" in the project's participant list. Please move your name to either the "former members" section or "active" section. Hope to see you in the "active" section! For more information on how to help the project, visit the "How to help" section at our project page!~~

{{helpme}}I wanted a quick opinion on the above notice before it goes live. Any thoughts?--ℳøℕø 04:13, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Regarding the image, there's something displeasing to me the side of the mac screen being cutoff; it feels incomplete. If you just moved the mac a bit closer to the text you could get in its full width. I also think you should slightly lighten the hexagon behind the bottom part of the "C" in mac. It's so dark that it gets lost. Just one man's opinion. As for the notice I have a few tweaks to suggest. Please move your name to either the "former members" section or "active" section. I would change this to Please move your name to either the "former" or "active" members section. I would also change Hope to see you in the "active" section! to Hope to see your name in the "active" column! Finally, in the very last sentence, I would unlink section; pipe the link to just "How to help" and do not inl;cude the quotations in the link, viz ...visit the "[[WP:MAC#How to help|How to help]]" section at.... Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Now that I think about it, I fully agree! Re-uploading the image (under the same name) following the suggestion above should do the trick, Mono. Thanks for the tips, Fuhghettaboutit! Airplaneman 04:49, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
MBP is feeling sluggish (I installed FF for compatability; it's quite slow. Now I have GC, FF, O, and S...) so I won't open my outdated version of Photoshop until tomorrow. Can you believe that they're on CS5 already?!?!? It's so expensive! Cheers, ℳøℕø 05:08, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't notice much difference. Chromium is choppy right now, IMO, so I', using FF until they release better versions of Chrome (it uses far less resources). I personally use GIMP, as I don't feel like dishing out, what, $800 for a photo editing program I don't need. Airplaneman 05:11, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Broad strokes:

  • I have GIMP on my PC
that I installed Linux on
because I hated XP
and now I don't turn it on. I personally like Aperture (software). Anyway, I'll do that. I found a better picture at File:IMac_aluminium.png, which will be better as well. Smiles, ℳøℕø 05:19, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

←Have you looked at WP:AFD recently? It's crazy right now, partly because of my edits! ℳøℕø 05:21, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

(edit conflict)XP isn't that bad IMO. It's just getting old. OS X is just better (aka it pwns). Have fun! Airplaneman 05:22, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
I saw your edits but didn't look at AFD. I guess it's good to relist to get thorough consensus. Seems like you're enjoying the havoc? Airplaneman 05:23, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Yep!ℳøℕø 05:33, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Please help me restore photo and text box

LilyPondLane (talk) 04:50, 25 April 2010 (UTC)4/24/2010 Hi, I edited Robert Armstrong's page, correcting his marriage information. When I saved the page, the photo disappeared along with the text box on the right side of the page. I looked up "revert" and "undo". I went to Armstrong's page, clicked on "history". I saw my user name with "undo" next to it. I clicked on that but didn't understand what I was supposed to do to go back to the previous version. Would undoing return the photo and text box? I am assuming that it would also return the incorrect marriage data. Could you please walk me through getting this straightened out? If it means returning the page to it's form prior to my editing, that's OK. I just want to restore the photo, text box and syntax. LilyPondLane (talk) 04:50, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Here is your edit. You inadvertantly removed the two closing brackets (-> }} ) in the infobox, as can be seen by the edit diff. All you need to do is restore those by typing out two brackets right next to each other after the infobox ends and where the prose (writing) starts. Hope this helps. If you'd like, I can do it for you. And yes, "undo" returns the article to its former state. Happy editing, Airplaneman 04:58, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

LilyPondLane (talk) 05:14, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Hi, many thanks for your offer to help. Yes, please be so kind as to do the "undo" for me. I regret that the marriage information will revert to the incorrect version, but I want the photo and text box back. Maybe when I get my courage back, I'll try another correction. Thanks again. LilyPondLane (talk) 05:14, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

No, I won't undo. I'll fix it by re-adding the two brackets and post the diff to show you. Be bold, by all means (just not stupid :D). Don't hesitate to drop by if you want to ask any more questions! Airplaneman 05:18, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
There you go! As you can see, the red text shows what's been changed. Airplaneman 05:19, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

LilyPondLane (talk) 13:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Thank you so much!!! That's terrific!!! You are wonderful!!!  :^) It will be a while before I am "bold". I made a mess of the page and you cleaned it up. I am grateful!!!

commas

I, for one, appreciated your comma splice comment. Best.--Epeefleche (talk) 05:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! :) Nice to meet you, Airplaneman 05:49, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Same. I'm often tempted to flag grammatical points at RfA. Usually hold myself back, as I'm afraid if I voted for it will prejudice someone against, and if I've voted against it will seem I'm being overly picky. --Epeefleche (talk) 19:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Good point; hope this doesn't happen! Opposers (such as in HJ Mitchell's current RfA) are being quite picky regardless, IMO. Airplaneman 20:04, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. Knowing one or two of them (having seen their prior edits) explain their !votes to me. Somewhat. And they are in the distinct minority. I wonder whether some people like being there. BTW -- I have an article up at GA, where the reviewer generally questioned my use of commas. I think its fine, but wouldn't mind a second look, if you have a moment, since you seem to have a good sensitivity to that issue. Just let me know. If too busy, no worries.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:25, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
I'll take a look, though I'm no expert. Link please :) Airplaneman 20:39, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Tx. Jon Scheyer.--Epeefleche (talk) 20:47, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Haha. As to commas after the year, in a MM DD, YYYY, format, I think that is correct, actually. See ref 7 at comma.--Epeefleche (talk) 21:04, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Ah. As you can see, I probably won't be of much help (I'm no expert). Sorry! Airplaneman 21:09, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Haha. No worries. You seemed one to me, by your splice comma comment (I didn't even know that had a name). Would you like to make the revert there, or prefer that I do so?--Epeefleche (talk) 21:14, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
I just happened to know that :). I'll revert. Airplaneman 21:17, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Looking forward to running into you in the future.--Epeefleche (talk) 22:21, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Robin Söderling

Hi!

I'm not so good at this but Robin Söderlings profile on wikipedia is being under serious vandalism by people who does not follow his career like I do. They just want to mess aroun. I would like to lock it you know, proctect it for a while. Help me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kribiboy (talkcontribs)

(talk page stalker)I will request protection. Brambleclawx 17:06, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
The page history does not indicate much vandalism. Therefore, the request may be turned down. Undoing edits is always an option. Airplaneman 17:29, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Declined due to the fact that most edits appear to be good-faith. The decliner has stated that if the situation worsens, it may be relisted. Brambleclawx 22:41, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Check again, the problem is that Rafael Nadals supporters are editing Söderlings article and is not looking on facts but only on their love for Rafa. Please semi protect the article—Preceding unsigned comment added by Kribiboy (talkcontribs)

I can't because 1) I'm not an administrator, and 2) It doesn't need protection. Please read our protection policy to see why the request was declined. The best you can do is undo the wrong edits, notify the editor who added it, and add correct info backed up with reliable sources, especially since this is a biography of a living person. Thanks, Airplaneman 23:41, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

[1] That was a lot of work and I spent hours in discussion with Peggy Lee, Denise's mother-in-law, via email. Any suggestions for getting it to A? --Jubileeclipman 01:56, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Oh, I totally forgot that it didn't need to be a GA to be voted into A class (as I understand it, you have to vote/review it - I read it at WP:ASSESS). After a quick look, I'd say it meets GA status. Will have to do a more thorough read-through, though. Airplaneman 21:51, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
It is an ongoing story, however: US Law is being reviewed as we speak because of the alleged screwups and the family are pushing for other changes, also, related to this. Do a Google News search for the bills, Denise Amber Lee, etc and you'll see what I mean. GA's need to be stable and unlikely to change due to recent events, IIRC. A-class would be fine, though, I guess, if you really feel it warrants it   --Jubileeclipman 22:29, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

A-class suggestions:

  • try sourcing every paragraph/claim that could be disputed, such as:
    • The bill was later dropped. (last sentence, last section)
    • last paragraph in "The 911 calls" (wholly unsourced right now)
    • Lee was found on January 19, 2008 off Toledo Blade, North Port, less than 5 miles from where Kowalski last saw her. (last sentence, in "The crime" section)
    • etc. - reviewers are quite picky with this stuff (I speak from experience - just see Wikipedia:Featured article review/Macintosh/archive2)

Hope this helps a bit. Airplaneman 02:10, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, it does indeed. The bill was later dropped. was added by an IP and I have a good idea who that IP is (either Peggy Lee or Mark Lee). I don't doubt it but it might not be easy to source if the bill was quietly dropped. I'll copy these you thoughts to my user space and have a look over them when I get a chance after returning. User Page background

I'm slightly concerned because when I go to my userpage, a fraction of a second before my page materialises, I see a momentary flash of orange, which I believe to be the complementary color of my user page color, blue. I'm not sure if all monitors do this, or I'm just seeing things due to the color contrast or something, but I'm afraid I might give someone a seizure. Is this something that only happens to me? Brambleclawx 01:00, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Just checked it out. Not for me (Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.10). Also, if you are concerned, you could place a warning like the one here and have users go to a subpage. If you need any help or have any questions, just ask!--monoNational Pretzel Day 01:40, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... I'm not seeing it either. I'm also using Firefox 3.6. It might just be your browser/computer/OS (mono and I use OS X) that somehow interprets the whatever you call it - coding? of your userpage differently. Most likely your browser, as I have seen differences in rendering between browsers for me as well. So if you're using Internet Explorer (I think you mentioned you were), you might give about 50-60% of people siezures when they visit your page :D. Oh, maybe it's Firestar/Sqirrelflight (she's orange, right?) hiding behind there... Airplaneman 02:04, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Very funny. It doesn't happen all the time. If someone gets a seizure, that'll be weird, but no one's complained so I assume no problem. If Squirrelflight or Firestar is hiding behind me monitor... that would be creepy.  Brambleclawx 00:22, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Yea, if it's still cropping up, it's probably because of the browser/OS/computer :). Airplaneman 00:43, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Also happens somtimes when there's a link like "Example#Norris" where is will see the top of "example" before I see the section "norris." Could be IE then. Brambleclawx 00:46, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
The above problem happens to me as well. This is because the browser first loads the whole page before navigating to the section (in a separate step). Airplaneman 00:48, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Then maybe its because my browser is slower? Brambleclawx 00:48, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Browser speed has been hurried and increased, with the browser wars playing a part. It happens to me as well :). Airplaneman 00:54, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

can you really count that as OR on a talk page? (it is for disussion amongst users, and discussion almost always include OR) Brambleclawx 01:07, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to   Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to   ThinkBlue (submissions) and   Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants   Stone (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

GAN backlog elimination drives chart up to 1 May

On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.

  • 661 total nominations were reviewed. 541 of them passed (~81.8%), 97 (~14.7%) failed, and 23 (~3.5%) ended on hold.
  • The WP:GAN page started at 110,126 bytes length on 1 April and ended at 43,387 bytes length at the end of 30 April (a 66,739 byte reduction in the page, about 60.6% less).
  • Excluding extremes, the longest wait for someone's GAN to be review was about 11.5 weeks at the beginning. (I mistook the figure when I reported to the Signpost that it was 13.) At the end, with the exception of one that was relisted, the longest wait is now at 10 days.
  • 63 different users participated, each having completed at least one GAN, with others also having helped out behind-the-scenes in making the drive a success.
  • The drive started with 463 GA nominations remaining and 388 unreviewed. At the end of the month, we ended with 89 remaining (374 or about 80.8% less) and 47 unreviewed (341 or about 87.9% less).

For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia.

What?

You posted on my talkpage on April 10th. Explain yourself. Crafty (talk) 11:21, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I thought the message would be self-explanatory (a talkback to Elockid's RFA) because some had responded to your oppose (not me). That's all. Airplaneman 16:41, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks...

... for your support on the Boobquake talk. The funny thing is - I kind of agree with User:NCDane that the thing was childish, but I think the Boobquake was childish, not the WP article about it. Of course, if the women had really, ummm, "bared their souls," I would certainly have been more supportive!   --Eliyahu S Talk 01:50, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I agree with your points above as well! Nice to meet you, Airplaneman 01:52, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

My Secret Page

Even though you are a terrible cheater... I guess you can have it. I was hoping that people wouldn't cheat to get it, because what, exactly, is the point of cheating to find a secret page?

Heh... thanks! :) Airplaneman 02:40, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Favor to ask

Would you wikify/copyedit Union of Upper Silesians, please? The user that created it is not natively English speaking, so deciphering the meaning of the article can be very difficult. I have worked on parts of it, but it is very draining and I would like another opinion. Thanks! PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:39, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Will do! Airplaneman 20:48, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh my... Airplaneman 20:49, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Exactly. Very well-sourced, and he's obviously done his homework (lots of content), but the grammar is very difficult. PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:55, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Will slowly fix throughout the evening. Might not get through all of it. Airplaneman 21:18, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Ran into a roadblock arleady... Airplaneman 21:30, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Roadblocks...I've seen a few of those! Mostly I leave them alone and then figure I'll go through the whole thing and leave a list for User:JosefKozdon. I had not thought of a hidden note - I will probably use that in the future. I was going to work on it tonight too, but my little sister is tying up the computer. That's the nuisance of sharing a computer, but anyway, I've worked through everything to "Under wings of Western Allies", but haven't touched anything after that. Thanks for your help! PrincessofLlyr royal court 21:51, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Glad I could help! I'll try to work on the places you haven't done. Airplaneman 21:54, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh, well I'm not guaranteeing the sections I've done are perfect yet. Just better than the ones I haven't touched. His translation isn't bad (certainly better than my Spanish translation would be), but it just isn't native English. PrincessofLlyr royal court 21:56, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Just saw your edit, and you changed "neighbours" to "neighbors". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the "-bour" ending was acceptable in British English, which is what the majority of the article appears to be. PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:59, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Ah... you're right! My spell checker doesn't recognize it... I'll change it my next run through if you or someone else doesn't get to it first. Airplaneman 21:29, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
