Millenium is a vegan fine-dining restaurant in Oakland, California.

History edit

The restaurant was established in 1994 in the Hotel California on Geary Street in San Francisco's Nob Hill historic district[1] in a traditional, elegant dining room.[2] The restaurant's atmosphere was described as comparing with most gourmet establishments.[1][2] In 2015 it moved into a casual industrial space[2] in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland.[2][3]

As of 2009 the restaurant offered a "Convert a Carnivore" weekly event on Wednesdays. Customers bringing in a non-vegetarian friend received a 25% discount.[4]

Reception edit

In 2019, Michelin awarded them a Bib Gourmand, calling them a vegan paradise and saying they were creating some of the country's best vegan food[5] and Big 7 Travel named them one of 50 best vegan-friendly restaurants in the world.[6]

In 2017 Tasting Table named them one of the eight best vegan restaurants in the U.S.[7]

In 2015 BuzzFeed named them one of 24 "bucket list" vegan restaurants[8] and vegan studies scholar Laura Wright referenced them in her monograph The Vegan Studies Project as one of two "famous vegan restaurants."[9]: 23

In 2014 Relish named them one of the 15 best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in the U.S.[10]

In 2013 Travel + Leisure named them one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the U.S.[11]

In 2004, VegNews magazine readers voted them their favorite restaurant and Eric Tucker their favorite chef.[1]

Shape named them one of the top 10 upscale vegan restaurants in the United States.[12] Food Network named them one of the top 20 vegan restaurants in the United States.[13]

Criticism edit

In August 2015, after the restaurant had moved from San Francisco to Oakland, the San Francisco Chronicle's Michael Bauer said they could have used the move to update their menu but didn't, saying they continued to "pile on the ingredients like a wool blanket on spring flowers." He gave the restaurant a mostly-critical review, mentioning the "Brik Purse" as a dish that showed off the kitchen's talent and saying he "marveled at the crust", but criticizing the plate as overcrowded with elements, allowing none to shine. He also criticized the service.[2]
