Runaway orange font tag in your signature edit

See for instance: Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Waltpohl as of January 7. It infects the remainder of the page with orangeness. -- Curps 23:11, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Exactly what I was going to tell you :). Want more examples? [1][2][3][4][5]. You're missing a at the end of your talk link.
Here's what your sig should look like:
[[User:Merovingian|Ryan!]] | [[User talk:Merovingian|Talk]] -Frazzydee| 00:24, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

For background, the HTMML tidy tool, which used to invisibly correct errors like this, has recently been turned off because it was one of the candidates for causing the site to be unpredictably unavailable and isn't necessary, but adds some unwelcome load to the apache servers. Your signature was always wrong, the tool just used to correct it for you. Another example is on my talk page. Tidy isn't required, so it may never return, but you might want to wait a few weeks before correcting all old copies of your signature. Brion is the person working with tidy, I think. Jamesday 04:04, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Another great example is Nick's sig above.. it's the reason this text is green ;) -- sannse (talk) 11:42, 20 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Angeltheow edit

Hello. Could you please include some reference for the claim that Angeltheow was the 45th-great-grandfather of Winston Churchill? JoaoRicardo 07:54, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Yes, I had visited that website. But I don't understand why you are relying on it. It is an amateur site, made by a hobbyist (his resume shows no experience in history or related fields). He even states that the site should not be taken as authoritative, and that other sources should be searched for. So I still think we could use a better reference for this claim. JoaoRicardo 08:41, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I believe we would be safer this way. Thank you! JoaoRicardo 20:01, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Bunch of star-stubs from German Wikipedia edit

Hi there!

User:85.74.9.60 is bringing across a whole bunch of star stubs from the German Wikipedia (see [6]). I'm trying to clean them up but of course you can Babelfish-and-paste faster than you can wikify! At some point this morning I'm going to get worn out. Anyway, I noticed your watchpage User:Merovingian/Req had some of these on it, and thought you might be interested—maybe you'd like to wikify a few too. :-)

Cheers! —Stormie 22:02, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)

Don't worry about Babelfish, it's easy enough to figure what the stubs mean.. a few German terms are in there untranslated, like "Rektaszension" (="Right ascension") and "Begleitstern" (="companion star"). Glad to have another person on the case! —Stormie 03:20, Feb 19, 2005 (UTC)

South African Poetry edit

You're welcome to the 2ψ with pleasure once the article is complete. Out of interest, why the particular choice of poets you've come up with? Surely Mongane Wally Serote and Douglas Livingstone have to be there as huge influences in SA poetry? And on another note altogether, do you really read and write Sanskrit, Malagasy and Latin, as evidenced by your contributions to those wikis? And why do you call yourself an American conservative? Why are you interested in SA poetry? Apologies for all the questions, I'm just intrigued by your profile Greenman - 5 March 2005

Calcutta -> Kolkata name change edit

Hi there. I noticed you voted in the Wikipedia:Naming policy poll to keep the Wikipedia policy of naming an article with the most familiar English name. You may not be aware that another attempt has begun to rename the Calcutta article to Kolkata, which is blatantly not the most common name of the city, whether it's official or not. If you want to vote on the issue you can do so at Talk:Calcutta. Cheers. -- Necrothesp 13:58, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

VfD votes edit

Hi Ryan!

I've noticed your recent votes at VfD to include as much as possible in Wikipedia. One suggestion, though: when you vote for keep, or delete, it would be nice to have a reason behind it. A vote by itself is okay, but, explaining why helps other Wikipedians and administrators gauge between keeping, cleaning up, or deleting that article. Thanks!

Tygar 23:46, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

VfD binge? Maybe ;) and that's perfectly okay.

Quickvotes edit

I can understand your enthusiasm for Quickvotes, Ryan, but I wonder if leaving brief & impersonal messages on a number of editors talkpages is the best way to advocate for restoring this process. After all, there have been a number of editors who worried in the last election for ArbCom that talkpages would get spammed, & people put off by such agressive tactics. I think you may want to consider a more social & interactive approach, perhaps simply informing people you have worked with that there is an ongoing discussion on the topic. -- llywrch 05:41, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It's a bad idea, whose time has come (and gone!). Instead of making it a YOU vs. HIM thing, it's better to see rules violations as a HIM vs. WIKIPEDIA thing. If he's not breaking any rules, grin and bear it. If he's breaking a rule, report him. No one has a "right" to post on this web site. It's not an opinion board. Only those who want to help make a superb, freely accessible encyclopedia are welcome to contribute here. Everyone else has to leave. It's not a democracy, it's a volunteer project.
Anyone hassles you, drop me a note. I'll take care of it. -- Uncle Ed (talk) 15:02, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)
Thank You for telling my Ryan about the bring back the quickpolls vote...I fully support the idea!--Comrade Nick @)---^-- 22:22, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Suzanne Lenglen edit

I've reverted you npov change, because it seems clear that she did dominate women's tennis in that period (and that's the title of the section), and "showed strength" doesn't really mean anything to me. If you disagree after reflection, please just revert back.-gadfium 02:50, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Genera lists edit

Hi, don't want to rain on your parade, but a list of genera is really pretty useless, to be useful it would have to be multiple lists, ie. a list of insect, plant, animal genera etc. There's also the problem of updating them and people simply using incorrect names and duplicate names, which add to the problem--nixie 03:17, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I really don't understand whay you mean by sketchy groupings, fungi, bacteria and protists are distinctly different organisms, and for the most part their taxomomy is quite clearly explained in their articles on wikipedia. Category:genera has alreay been deleted by the concensus of the Tree of Life Wikiproject, because it was uninformative and unused. To give you an idea of how huge these lists would need to be informative, there are 796 genera of orchids and 942 genera of hymenoptera, which are a tiny fragment of all organisms. Most users also search by common name. Given that you don't, as far as I can tell, have a background in taxonomy, how do you know your sources are correct and theat you are using the right name and not a synonym?--nixie 05:57, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Anyway, best of luck with your undertaking--nixie 08:18, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I came along with exactly the same issue - Genera are only unique within a kingdom and there are sooooooooooo many of them that this must be better done in other ways. I cannot imagine how this might be populated to a reasonable standard and if it isn't it won't be useful. I suspect that this might be the moment to pause and re-think this one. Velela 13:37, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar! I really should watch my own subpages more carefully since I didn't even notice it until today. :) Angela. 18:31, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

Everyking edit

I notice that you unblocked Everyking. I think this was a big mistake on your part. First of all, this is not the first time everyking has promised to be nice. Last time he got blocked for reverting, he promised Tony that he wouldn't revert anymore. Four days later, he reverted. Now he's promised you. And you've gone and proven to him that if he whines to enough people, he'll eventually find somebody who will overturn his block for him. He's been directed to Wikipedia:Revert before. There was no reason for him not to know that removing content somebody put in is a revert. And yet he did it. And you unblocked him for it.

I ask that you please reblock him. The continual bending of his arbcom ruling does nothing to demonstrate to him that he is under an editing restriction. Instead, it shows him that he can get away with anything if he asks nicely. That's not an acceptable outcome. Snowspinner 23:28, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

Quite the contrary, I did assume good faith - last time he made the promise. Regardless, I put the case before the arbcom, so I suppose it's more or less moot. Snowspinner 03:16, Mar 19, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you edit

Thank you for this edit. I hate it when people put flowerly language in the Wiki. Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 07:01, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

Tuva edit

Hi, Mero! I see that you moved Tyva back to Tuva. Even though the name changed to Tyva as far back as 1993, it looks like the google count confirms that in English "Tuva" is far more common than "Tyva", so I'm not gonna argue (should have probably checked that myself first).

I just want to point out that not only the article needed to be moved, but also all of the intra-article references, as well as the references in the articles linking to Tuva, need to be changed. I thought that since you selected to move the article yourself instead of asking me to fix the blunder, it would only be fair if I let you finish the job :) Don't worry about the actual Tuva itself, since it will eventually be overwritten by Tuva/Temp.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!—Ëzhiki (erinaceus europeaus) 18:25, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)

Norwegian kings edit

When referring to medieval Norwegian kings it is generally better to use their bynames rather than numerals (Harald Fairhair instead of Harald I). See Wikipedia:WikiProject Norway Fornadan 10:22, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Roman stub edit

Hi Merovingian - thanks for the much improved icon for Template:Roman-stub. I was looking for a picture like that and gave up in the end, making do with a fairly boring set of Roman numerals. The new pic is much better! BTW, I note the irony of someone with your user name finding a picture for that template, given that the Merovingians basically took over France from the Romans! :) Grutness|hello? 13:54, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

RuneScape edit

No, it's not pretentious to assume I have some experience with RuneScape. My character there has the same username as mine here. Most of my work has been simply correcting spelling and making the whole series of articles connect together. Goa edit

Hi!, sorry for the delay in responding, I had a major computer problem. Your edit:

On May 21, 2003, Goa was the subject of the final question in the United States' National Geographic Bee. James Williams, a homeschooled eighth-grader from Vancouver, Washington, correctly guessed that the Indian state was a Portuguese possession until 1961.

wasn't encyclopedic enough. It does not say much on the state and is just a trivia sentence on a popular quiz contest. Since this is a Featured Article, its best to have relavent matter relating to the state on the page. =Nichalp (talk · contribs)= 18:29, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)

Now, I am User:NewGuy4 and I did the 100% Bran page. 100% Bran is totally discusting. You and I can both agree that there is nothing good in 100 % Bran at all. Thus, 100% Bran is 100% Crap.
