Question

Hi Serene. I noticed, when I was reading through your user page, that you said you served in the Army. I would like to ask a question about that if you would permit me? All the best. ScarianTalk 03:17, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello Serene, apologies for replying so quickly, I haven't slept so I've been on here all night and morning. I liked the pun, good stuff! Anyway, my questions are: (And I know these questions have a rather obvious answer) What is being in the Army actually like? And is 'basic training' and 'regular training' difficult? I have read up on those things a little and I do have the DVD's and pamphlet's (That try and sell the good points about being in the Army... but I want a first hand unbiased account) the Army give out. And I do understand that, of course, training has to be difficult in order to prepare soldiers for battle and other tasks that they are obliged to perform... but I was looking for more specifics. Thank you in advance Serene. I hope my questions aren't too forward or out of place. All the best, Pat. ScarianTalk 08:31, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Byzantium under the Komnenoi GAC review

You put on the GAC page that the article is being edited and the review is being postponed for a week. In that case, the nomination needs to be put on hold and the appropriate templates put into place. Lara♥Love 04:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I didn't actually go to see that there had been no review. In that case, it is as you stated at the end of your comment. The nomination should have been withdrawn until the article was ready, then renominated then. Lara♥Love 13:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
What constitutes adequate sourcing varies from one editor to the next. I think most editors have their opinion on what the minimum amount of sourcing should be for every article of the encyclopedia. That minimum is what is required for GAs they review. I prefer what you noted. All quotes and material that may be challenged must be sourced. Otherwise, there must be at least one inline citation per paragraph (preferably at the end). That's sort of the standard at WP:GA/R. Biographies, of course, are stricter than this, particularly for living persons. Lara♥Love 14:21, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Azusa Street Revival

Thanks a bunch for the very helpful and specific review on this article. I had put a lot of work into it a few months ago and was wanting another pair of eyes to look it over. I took it from a stub with no images to what you found. I'll get on those edits you mentioned and let you know when it's looking better. Have a great week! Nswinton\talk 14:35, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

AfD for Blackle.com

Hi - I thought I'd leave a note here regarding your comments on the Blackle AfD debate. You mentioned that you might intend to create a parent article on the subject under discussion - this would be great, but from your remarks it looks as though you want to create the article for the purpose of advocating a particular point of view. Wikipedia must not be used for advocacy - all we do here is factually reproduce what external, reliable sources have said or written about things (in theory anyway - some stuff does get past but eventually it'll end up on AfD itself!). We are not a political, social or moral watchdog, and we support no cause - however worthy - other than freedom of knowledge. However, if you have reliable sources for the things you intend to write about, and can do it in a completely unbiased way, go ahead.

If you wish to use the content from Blackle in your new article, you might like to copy it to a sub-page of your user space before the AfD closes (I suspect the outcome will be deletion on notability grounds). If you need a hand with this, drop me a note on my talk page here and I'll be happy to help. All the best, EyeSereneTALK 14:42, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Byzantium under the Komnenoi

I have done my best to address the issues you have raised on the talk page at Byzantium under the Komnenoi, and so I feel the article is now ready for another look, whenever you are ready. My only concern now is the introduction to the article; having rewritten it, using material from the conclusion, I am not sure it flows quite as smoothly as it should, but a few minor tweaks would suffice to fix it. See you at Talk:Byzantium under the Komnenoi, and thanks for taking an interest in the article! :) Bigdaddy1204 15:55, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

RE: Welcome to the LoCE

Thanks for the welcome, looks like I should be able to find plenty to do in the LoCE. I read that some changes to procedure were being discussed - did anything come of that? Seems like it would be beneficial to the league as I have found it can be quite difficult to distinguish 'hasn't been done' from 'has been done and needs moving out of the list'. Oh, one other thing - I like your user page. Is there any kind of help page with advice on brightening up user pages? I'm not too hot with the advanced markup stuff on wikipedia yet --carelesshx talk 20:40, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Azusa Street Revival

Thanks for the head's up! I think that I finally have gotten through all of the weaknesses of the article that you brought up. Thanks again for your review as well! Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to improve the article. I'd also like to continue to dialogue with you on the last two issues you brought up in your review, to see if we can come up with good solutions to the problem. Nswinton\talk 23:26, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks so much for the pass! If you're still interested, I'd love it if you could do those copyedits you mentioned about the intro. I'm hoping to someday get this up to a FA. Any suggestions you have in that direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the very involved review. That seems like an awful lot of background on the war for a battle article to me, are you sure it's appropriate? Just wondering, is this common? IvoShandor 19:30, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
It's cool, you're right. The Black Hawk War is the first attempt I have taken at military history, and, to say the least, it is daunting. That being said, you wouldn't mind if I maybe trimmed a bit off that addition, not a lot, just some stuff that be peripheral to the battle and its context. Also, I think I am going to copy what you added to the article to the other articles about the battles during the war, I may add a couple more citations to it from the main article (which has been quite a lot of work in its own right). IvoShandor 20:17, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
You're right, there isn't really any way around it. The articles do have to stand alone as well as part of a integrated series. Anyone could arrive from any number of locations, especially as I increase the number of links to the articles from related articles. Anyway, about the topic, it's fascinating to me as well. I just received a book about the whole of the Black Hawk War from Amazon to today, should be an interesting read and may help to clear up some of the discrepancies I have encountered in my research since it was written in 2006, we'll see. Thanks for the tips and review work so far, I have put quite a few comments on the talk page, while I have some minor disagreements about a couple things, the Bad Axe discrepancy with that article in particular, they are mostly no big deal as I have ignored my resistance and just addressed them anyway. Not quite done but not far, a couple days at most probably. IvoShandor 20:53, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

(undent)Off topic comment follows (kind of anyway). Since you expressed an interest in the eradication of Native American cultures and white settlement etc. I thought you might find this tidbit interesting. I live in the region where the Black Hawk War occurred. During the war, of course, Chief Black Hawk was vilified and painted as as an inhuman savage. This portrayal was common in media of the day, I have found articles written some 90 years after the fact that still carried this characterization (and these were in major newspapers). What is interesting about this is that somewhere along the way Black Hawk became somewhat of a folk hero. In Chicago there is a hockey team, Chicago Blackhawks. Throughout the region there are businesses, roads, stadiums etc that use the name, Black Hawk Motors, Black Hawk tractors, Black Hawk ice cream etc etc etc. Near the city of Oregon, Illinois, there is a giant concrete monolithic statue called the Eternal Indian that has become known as the Black Hawk Statue. It's amazing how the portrayal of historical personalities can change so drastically given a 175 years or so. : ) IvoShandor 21:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

Sac is indeed a variant and the helicopter's name comes from him as well. A lot has been named after Black Hawk. Ships, and other military hardware. The whole reason I became so intrigued by this conflict is because Black Hawk is all over the place. (And I have a tendency to traverse the countryside for historic sites. I have seen some very cool stuff, and to think I once thought where I lived was boring. : ) IvoShandor 21:36, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
I remember that trend, it is something that has been done across the historic spectrum. Sometimes it is really good intentioned, such as with the conquest of the Americas and how they were viewed popularly for a long time. Then again, sometimes I think historians just like to burst people's bubbles because they can. Ha. IvoShandor 22:10, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

WetLeather

Thank you for the note, EyeSerene. I think you are spot-on about the guidelines making it very difficult to establish notability for a semi-private social group. I appreciate the offer of help with copyediting, and will welcome your contribution if the article stays. At the moment, I'm reluctant to put much more effort into it until that decision gets made. I am ignorant of how and when that happens (e.g. who is the "final authority?), but will keep monitoring the changes and comments. Cpaukstis 19:23, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your work, review and the user box (yes I have a few GAs but I always put the user boxes for GAs that others give me on my recognitions page, because its nice for someone to take the time to drop that off). Occupation of Denmark

Hi EyeSerene

Thanks for your input regarding the Occupation of Denmark article. Since this is an article mostly written by Danes, its nice to get a little feedback from somebody that isn't influenced by having heard the story a million times before. I've fixed the reference for the image you mentioned, but unfortunately, I doubt that I'll get the time to do much editing within the deadline you've specified - in fact, I'm not sure why Liliac Soul nominated it for GA in the first place. Thanks for your comments anyway, and hopefully, the article will one day be brought into a more decent shape. Keep up the good work and happy editing. Valentinian T / C 20:47, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead and delist it. I thought all issues had been taken care of, but I see that I was obviously wrong about that. Perhaps I shouldn't have listed it. Lilac Soul (talk contribs count) 14:53, 14 August 2007 (UTC)

Famous scorpions (!)

I removed the speedy tag after I realized this should have been named List of famous Scorpios. I (obviously) then renamed it. Perhaps a prod tag or AfD might be reasonable, but I hope you see that it is no longer patent nonsense. (BTW, I only saw this page on new article patrol and thought like yourself it might be nonsense, but realized that Scorpio itself would have been one, so let it be.) Happy editing. Baccyak4H (Yak!) 16:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

(Reply here per your talk page): Ah, now it makes sense! I did look at the page history, and the contribs of the creator, and concluded it was nonsense... but looking at the page again, this time I noticed it's in the 'Astrological signs' category (missed seeing that before) so you are obviously right. Thanks for catching my mistake ;) As you say, it still might be worth an AfD per WP:NOT#DIR ('Famous' is pretty subjective for inclusion in a list), but I'll not rush into that...   Done

The article was not noticed for weeks and then the GA review suddenly brought in a good deal of "help". It seems to be slowing down. Thaks for your interest in our work and you might consider looking at one of my two other nominations. They are both brief as little extant info is available on the subjects. Thank you again. -- SECisek 16:30, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hey whats up, I just came to the Assyrian army article and realized it had a serious demotion from A to B class. I know no one responded to ur message, but the thing is, me, Eliasalucard and Chaldean agreed that the article was an A class.

Please put it back for a Good article review, at the least, since I think it can make it an FA with a few changes. Thanks. Also, is it not possible to simply have a concensus of the current editors of teh article as to what class it is? I mean, for an Assyrian article, its probably the best.

Respectfully,
