Aha!

Quote from Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information {quote}

What doesn't belong in wikipedia:

"Plot summaries. Wikipedia articles on works of fiction should contain real-world context and sourced analysis, offering detail on a work's achievements, impact or historical significance, not solely a summary of that work's plot. A plot summary may be appropriate as an aspect of a larger topic."

This is very helpful. I had been wondering... Too many book articles I've seen contains lengthy plot descriptions that are frankly dull and unreadable. So I'll focus on themes and significance.

  • I need to figure out the correct way to contribute to Talk pages and ask: How do I get sourced criticism? Since I intend to discuss the themes appearing in books, is it enough to simply write what I see ("Mists of Avalon" presents a feminist point of view) or do I need to source it?

About Me edit

I'm 25 and unemployed. No, unemployed is the wrong word, it implies that I'm looking for a job. I'm not. For the past three months I've been reading library books, and as of today (October 18, 2006), I'm decided that I'll contribute to wikipedia articles on my favorite books, which were due for a re-reading anyway. This is a worthy endeavor, right? Better than playing civ4, anyway.

When I did work, I was a technical writer, so contributing to wikipedia is the perfect answer to any twinges of boredom, restlessness, or longing for my old work that I might get. It's just like work! Editing, formating, massive amounts of copy & paste. Repetitive Ctrl+X and Ctrl+V makes your pinky hurt, I learned that.

My main interest is in science fiction novels. I'm still looking for a clear set of guidelines on what a good novel article should contain and what it shouldn't.
