UTFSF is an initialism for "Use The Fucking Search Function." Usenet, discussion forums, and the like suffer from users who post requests for answers that have long been available through a search engine. These requests unnecessarily consume bandwidth, storage space, and user-time. Since the Internet's primary cultural enforcement mechanism remains "flaming", the rude expression, shortened to UTFSF, both explains what the offending user should have done and puts it in terms that make it clear that such faux pas are not appreciated. Though the phrase is in English, the UTFSF acronym can be found on many top level domains including "at", "de", "fr", "it", "lv", and "nl".[1]
It is believed that UTFSF was coined in a thread on the Tape Op message board.[2][3]
