Suggest a change in the Portal Indian religions from File:Taj Mahal pr.jpg to File:Dharmic religions.jpg. (Another possibility would be File:Dharmic religions symbols.jpg).

Three main problems with current symbol:

1. The Taj Mahal is not a symbol of religion. It is a remarkable mausoleum and a great piece of architecture, but not a symbol of religion.
2. The article Indian religions says in the first sentence: "Indian religions, sometimes also termed as Dharmic faiths or religions, are the religions that originated in the Indian subcontinent; namely Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism." Should not a symbol be used that represents these Indian religions, instead of one that only represents Islam (or rather Islamic architecture)?
3. When one looks at the image, it is impossible to see what the image represents. Because of the small display size, it is simply impossible to decipher it. Suggest a change in the Portal religion from File:P_religion_world.svg to File:ReligionSymbol.svg.

The article on World religions says that the four largest world religions by far are Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. Other religions have much less followers. The article World religions says that Hinduism and Buddhism are included in the major world religions.

To be neutral and true, it should include all of the four major religions. Instead, it includes 2 smaller religions or philosophies which have less followers globally (Judaism, which has less followers than Falun Gong, and Yin Yang (Chinese Philosophy)). --92.106.101.162 (talk) 12:09, 5 August 2017 (UTC)

The file file:France Ancient.svg, used as icon for the "Military history of France" has been superseded and widely replaced by the more standard and lighter file file:Arms of the Kings of France (France Ancien).svg. I would like to be granted permission to add/edit Module:Portal/images. I have added many portal images in the past and many portals still lack an image. Hi, I noticed that three of the "aspect ratio" portals have invalid images (not that the any of the portals appear to exist either, so not sure why they exist)

• "aspect ratio 1.000" File:Flag of Switwerland.svg typo should be File:Flag of Switzerland.svg
• "aspect ratio 1.400" File:Flag of Kosovo missing file extension should be File:Flag of Kosovo.svg

Would someone please remove File:Seal of the California State University.png from Module:Portal/images? It's licensed as non-free content, which appeaers to be correct per WP:MCQ#File:Seal of the California State University.png. FWIW, Portal:California state university where the file is being used does not appear to exist yet, but regardless non-fre content should not be being used in the portal or template namespaces per WP:NFCC#9

Finally, just a general suggestion. Since templates/modules such as this are protected and cannot be added by any editor at random, it might be a good idea to add something to the information provided for those who can edit them about non-free image use (if such information does not already exist). All the editor adding the image needs to do is check the file's licensing. If it's non-free content, then simply don't add the file. If the licensing appears incorrect or is unclear, ask for clarifiction at WP:MCQ. Some of these might be being added per good-faith requests made on talk pages, etc. by editors who are unable to directly edit the templates themselves and who might not be aware of WP:NFCCP, but the need to clean might be reduced if the file's licensing can be verified beforehand. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:27, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

P.S. Sorry if this is wrong, its my first time. Also a big odd box appeared above my request, sorry if that is not supposed to be there.

The big odd box is supposed to be there because it attracts template editors to your request (like moths are attracted to light). In the portal box to the right I can see a thin border, is this sufficient? @MSGJ and Jingle535: The border doesn't appear when you use Template:Portal-inline because it uses the p._image function in Module:Portal, and that function is designed to get the image name only, without any border, alt= or link= options. Whether this is a good design decision, I'm not sure. I'm guessing that some code somewhere depends on p._image returning only the image name, though. — Mr. Stradivarius ^{♪ talk ♪} 08:28, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

@Mr. Stradivarius: (Thank you for both for your responses and Stradivarius for your welcome to me.) Although I am highly ignorant, it would appear that you have significant experience and edits with Portal, and a fair amount with Portal Inline. Because of this I think you would have reasonable authority to change portal inline so that it would allow for borders, if this is possible and should be done (however if you do not want to do this because the amount of possible work that is understandable). If you do not want to change the template then could you just change the image for Madagascar so that it has a border? The page Subfossil lemur was recently featured and in the 'see also' section the flag of Madagascar was very peculiar looking because of the lack of border. — Jingle535 (talk) 21:45, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

I can see your point that not every church east of the Adriatic is represented by the "Russian Orthodox cross". It's also true that not every version of eastern christianity is orthodox, e.g. Saint Thomas Christian denominations. An orthodox symbol is not neutral in that context. I would like know if some one could please create a portal template for "Portal:Puerto Rico/Did you know-Puerto Rico?". WP:TPROT provides, "Editors may request edits to a template-protected page by proposing them on its talk page, using the {{Edit template-protected}} template if necessary to gain attention."

Additionally, the discussion you linked wasn't, in fact, specifically supportive of an animated GIF vis-à-vis a non-animated image (or the default portal image – or any image substantially different from the then-existing one). Rather, it was merely discussing the text would flow in an existing animated GIF, which the closer described as a "trivial" change. If the discussion was to establish consensus on a matter of greater significance than the direction the text flows, I trust it wouldn't have been regarded as "trivial".

Regardless, a discussion there can't override the central consensus reflected in WP:IMAGEPOLICY providing, "Inline animations should be used sparingly". No editor has chimed in with support for your proposed change (admittitly neither has any editor opposed it either) probably because the affected editors are not monitoring this page. You're likely to have better luck establishing consensus for changing the portal icon by starting a discussion at the affected portal (linked above). Avoiding links to broken portals

Some category header templates now include automated links to portals, passing them to this template. They only check whether the portals exist; they don't check whether the portals are ready for use, and some are not, e.g. Portal:1910s has been started but is tagged with {{Portal maintenance status|date=October 2018|incomplete=y|subpages=checked|broken=major}}.

For the portal Portal:Morpeth, Northumberland currently the only image appropriate is the Northumbrian flag. The coat of arms may be more appropriate, but an image of this is currently not available for use on Wikipedia. Still the flag is strongly associated with the town and hopefully I will be able to find (or make) an appropriate image for the coat of arms in the future.

Optionally link only to portals which actually exists

It would very useful to have a switch which caused the module to link only to portals which actually exist, to avoid redinks. The code would be simple, using Title objects.

The only-if-exists mode could be enabled by a named parameter, e.g. noredlinks=yes or ifexists=yes

A {{#ifexist:}} test on portals is currently used by many category header templates, but would be more elegant and more efficient to have this check done by the module.

For example, a template which makes a category for a named topic ("MyTopic") in a named city ("MyCity") in a named region ("MyRegion") links to portals via code like this: {{Portal|{{#ifexist: Portal:MyCity|MyCity}}|{{#ifexist: Portal:MyRegion|MyRegion}}|{{#ifexist: Portal:MyTopic|MyTopic}}}}

... possibly formatted as

{{Portal
     |{{#ifexist: Portal:MyCity|MyCity}}
     |{{#ifexist: Portal:MyRegion|MyRegion}}
     |{{#ifexist: Portal:MyTopic|MyTopic}}

I would favour switching on this feature by default. How are red links for portals helpful? Either disable them altogether, or introduce the reverse functionality, e.g. via a new parameter redlinks=yes.

I would also favour Template:Portal showing nothing if no valid portals are specified (instead of the error message that is currently displayed for empty {{Portal}}). This would save the work of removing red links after portals are deleted. (I recently did this for links to Portal:Social welfare and social work, which RHaworth had speedily deleted as WP:P1 in May.)
