Transclusions edit

@AllenHAcNguyen: What did that last edit to this template do?—LucasThoms 05:51, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Lucas Thoms: I just want signatures templates (not substituted) after I sign with four tildes using (~~~~) instead of typing your signature template page and then five tildes. That's what we need here for including your signature templates copied the source from Template:Nosubst template from Wikia and it works perfectly on Wikipedia. --Allen talk 14:36, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@AllenHAcNguyen: Do you know what this template is for? It's for marking other templates that they should not be substituted. You... can't just change it to fit your needs. You can feel free to copy its source into your userspace (and then make whatever changes). —LucasThoms 15:56, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Thoms: I should replace "{{{{{1}}}}}" in this template page as transcluding signatures is allowed on Wikipedia as the same on Wikia seen here was the source of it. --Allen talk 00:05, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@AllenHAcNguyen: No, the template on Wikia is a completely different template that accomplishes completely different things. Other than the name, they have nothing in common. The Wikia one is for your signature, this one is for marking templates. Your edit broke the documentation pages of 216 pages. You can try to use the code from Wikia in your userspace, but this template is not the right place for it.—LucasThoms 00:08, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Lucas Thoms: That is not necessary, it should be the same template as Wikia does. On your preferences, you should type {{SUBST:Nosubst|User:Lucas Thoms/sig}} to make your signature as a template when you sign it with four tildes, but without "Nosubst" there if you sign with four tildes it contains much characters than a template page. --Allen talk 00:18, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

@AllenHAcNguyen: If you have to change this completely unrelated template to accomplish that, you're doing something wrong. Maybe it should be the same as Wikia, but it's not.—LucasThoms 00:21, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Lucas Thoms: It supposed to be the same signature policy as on Wikia, then a signature template will be replaced when you signed it with four tildes at anytime. --Allen talk 18:06, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
@AllenHAcNguyen: Like I said before, this is Wikipedia. What you do on wikia has nothing to do with what happens here. You need to accept that things are different here. The policies are different, the templates are different, the editors are different.—LucasThoms 18:10, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 24 July 2020 edit

– These two opposite templates display a banner in template documentation to advise if the template should always or never be substituted. Until recently, they were named "nosubst" and "subst only". Recently, they were renamed "no substiution" and "substitute only", respectively. Then the latter only was reverted. The purpose of this discussion is to resolve the current inconsistency. There has been a recent trend to use natural spacing, thus "no subst*" over "nosubst*". The further question is whether to use the abbreviation "subst" or the full word. • Keep at "subst": The code to subst a template is "subst:", so the name of the template is "subst only". It makes sense for the template name to match the code. I'm fine with redirect existing at other names that make sense to people. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:01, 24 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Move to "Template:No subst" – they're both equally valid names, so the only factor in my mind is historical president. Redirects are already in place from all other possible names, so it doesn't really matter if it's an abbreviated name, it's still able to be called from the long name. Thus, I'd keep at consistency, and historical president. WT79 (speak to me | editing patterns | what I been doing) 11:02, 25 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Natural English per the actual guideline WP:TPN (and not just WP:ILIKEIT !votes). The inner code of the template is meaningless to the actual name of the template as most users don't even know how to read that code. What they do know, is how to read English, and having a template titled with something that they can understand is much more important. In this regard "subst" means nothing as it's not an actual word, while "substitution"/"substitute" are. --Gonnym (talk) 09:46, 26 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Move {{No substitution}} to {{Never subst}}, and {{Subst only}} to {{Always subst}} - makes this consistent (so you actually know what you're templating in) and a hell of a less confusing. ItsPugle (please use {{reply|ItsPugle}} when replying) 05:21, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Strongly oppose any solution that leaves "subst" in the template titles, basically as per Gonnym. So I suppose I could support moves to {{Never substitute}} and {{Always substitute}}; other titles as redirects is fine. --IJBall (contribstalk) 15:13, 14 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Full words per WP:TPN and IJBall. Wug·a·po·des 23:25, 20 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

This template should not be substituted. Therefore, "use {{subst:templateName}}" (instead of {{templateName}}) doesn't make sense; it should be "use {{templateName}} and not {{subst:templateName}}". 79.185.142.163 (talk) 18:25, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@79.185.142.163: I believe it's providing an example of substituting the template, in case an editor didn't know what substituting was. I do agree with you though, since in its current revision the wording is slightly confusing. Deauthorized. (talk) 18:32, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Done Thanks for pointing that out. Primefac (talk) 18:36, 2 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
