Religious affiliation

This is a minor point, but I think it would be preferable to change Religion to Religious affiliation. It seems awkward every time I change a school infobox to say Religion: None. --Jh12 (talk) 19:21, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Just omit the |religion= parameter altogether and it won't show. Of course, |religion=None actually makes perfect sense for public schools :-) RossPatterson (talk) 21:30, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
I actually mean changing the text that's displayed as Religious affiliation. All of the nonstandard infoboxes I've converted use "Religious affiliation", not "Religion" in the infobox. --Jh12 (talk) 22:24, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Proposed edit

{{editprotected}} To reflect this version this version this version of the sandbox. Changes include:

  • Removed redundant {{#if:{{{imagewikilink|}}} conditional
  • Merged the two coordinate templates used for latitude and longitude, set coord to override latitude and longitude
  • Wiki-linked country using conditionals leftover from {{flagcountry}}
  • Changed center-align for grade enrollment to +1em padding on left side
  • Fixed other_grade_label calls
  • Removed non-breaking spaces for labels which made the template too wide
  • Nested conditionals for enrollment/enrolment, fixed spacing
  • Line break for motto_translation
  • Fixed broken national_ranking parameter call
  • Corrected parser function for national_ranking and classes offered
  • Relabeled religion as "Religious Affiliation"
  • Separated affiliation from religious_affiliation
  • Relabeled homepage, url and website as "Website"
  • Rearranged fields throughout
  • Set labels as table headers (bold text)
  • Removed cellspacing="3" to reduce size of the Infobox

Also, the protection template needs to be updated. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:49, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
  • Update: added fix to country parameter to convert ISO 3166 codes to country names. --Paul_012 (talk) 09:50, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
  • I removed the changes to the template appearance, for some may not have agreed. The rest of the edits should be fairly uncontroversial. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:12, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Done, and updated protection tag. Huntster (t@c) 09:33, 26 September 2008 (UTC)

Recatalog for redirect

Since this redirects from "High School" it should probably be cataloged separately under that heading. Just shows up now under "school".

If you mean Category:Template-Class school pages, that's only an internal assessment category for WikiProject Schools, a project that covers both primary and secondary schools. Best, --Jh12 (talk) 21:35, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Competition

Template:Infobox Secondary school seems to duplicate this to some extent. It looks newer and more aimed at American schools. I wish (in a given country) we did not have to decide between competing formats. I've been using this one all along. The new one has (among others) athletics= which is a pain. I'll bet there are others. Student7 (talk) 11:31, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

I agree that having a standard template is better. Template:Infobox Secondary school is supposed to be a more generic infobox; with better choices for the UK, US, and Canada listed at Template:Infobox_Secondary_school#Other_templates. Anyway, I actually think Template:Infobox School looks better for US schools, and it's in use by all three US schools with featured articles Category:FA-Class school articles --Jh12 (talk) 21:51, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Proposed edit (December 2008)

{{editprotected}} I've made some additional changes to the sandbox version. Could they be migrated to the production version? ~ PaulT+/C 22:24, 14 December 2008 (UTC)

Oppose. That edit will break all the two-word parameters. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:22, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
Really? I was following the convention used for the "educational authority" parameter and it didn't look like the underscores were needed.
{{Infobox School
| educational authority = test
| religious affiliation = test2}}
{{Infobox School/sandbox
| educational authority = test
| religious affiliation = test2}}
{{Infobox School
| educational_authority = test
| religious_affiliation = test2}}
{{Infobox School/sandbox
| educational_authority = test
| religious_affiliation = test2}}
After the above tests I see that parameters are underscore-sensitive. I'll have to go back and fix those changes. I've withdrawn my request until I make those changes. Parameter names should really be space-, underscore-, and capitalization-insensitive. I can't imagine a situation where those differences would ever be important. Of course, that is a much bigger thread than appropriate for this discussion page... Thanks for catching that. ~ PaulT+/C 17:30, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Text color

{{editprotected}} While I am aware "that it is not generally recommended to specify different colors for Infobox templates," I am curious if there is a way to override the text color, in addition to the background colors. I noticed today that someone chose to change the background color in State College High School to match the school color, and now the headings are very difficult to read. While I don't believe it is necessary to edit the bgcolor of an infobox, I have no interest in getting into an edit war reverting the colors, and would rather have the ability to change the text color. Does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? -Gr0ff (talk) 16:06, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Personally, I'd prefer disabling the custom background colours altogether, which would also solve the problem. But I don't know how it will fall with editors, and it may not be the wisest course of action. --Paul_012 (talk) 15:42, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
I agree, allowing people to change the bg color results in ugly templates that are impossible to read. I suggest just removing the bg color parameter. Mr.Z-man 23:54, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
I also support the removal of the bgcolor parameters. It looks strange to me when infoboxes differ in color --Jh12 (talk) 00:46, 20 December 2008 (UTC)
Done I was a precise "surgery". I hope I did everything right. Ruslik (talk) 13:44, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Documentation is not protected. Ruslik (talk) 14:30, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

While I certainly agree that the wrong colors can ruin an infobox by making it difficult to read (especially with darker colors) I don't agree the color option should be completely disabled. If someone chooses a color for an infobox that is difficult to read, revert it. Perhaps only the heading bars (school name, address, and information) could have a color option and maybe a text color option for when a background color is too dark for black text to be read easily. I'm not going to make a big deal out of this because it's really not that important, but the color option just makes it a little bit more visually appealing and interesting to me. --JonRidinger (talk) 06:03, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Header size

{{editprotected}} Please change | class="fn org" colspan="2" bgcolor=lavender style="text-align: center; font-size: larger;" at the top of the template to | class="fn org" colspan="2" bgcolor=lavender style="text-align: center; font-size: 10.5pt;" This will slightly change the font size of the header listing the school's name to be the same size as that of Template:Infobox Secondary school and Template:Infobox University. It's not a major change, but if you want to know why please see User talk:Rhatsa26X; I'm trying to explain to him that the way to fix some things in a template is not to edit every article with the template. Thanks, Reywas92Talk 03:14, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Setting font size in points is not recommended in web design, as it would reduce user-configurability. Try viewing the testcases (now edited to reflect your proposal) with a large default font size. The defined 10.5pt will look dwarfed in comparison. To attain uniformity with Infobox University, font-size: larger; should be changed to font-size: 120% instead. --Paul_012 (talk) 05:52, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Then please do that. This is to stop User:Rhatsa26X from adding <span style=';font-size:10.5pt;'> to school articles within the infobox, thinking that that's the way to have uniformity. Reywas92Talk 16:20, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Done. Pagrashtak 15:49, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Proposed edit to reduce length

I edited the sandbox to remove the three-pixel cell padding specification and removed the background colours while changing the labels to bold table headers. This helps reduce the considerable length the infobox takes a bit. Opinions? If no one objects, I'll request an edit in a few days. Please place an {{editprotected}} tag when an agreement has been met. --Paul_012 (talk) 13:17, 20 January 2009 (UTC), 16:11, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

optional change of background colour

If possible, could an optional parameter be introduced for background colour enabling an over-ride of the current default lavender background? It shouldn't be too hard to introduce and won't need any further tidy up as all pages will retain lavender as default, but will enable userboxes where lavender isn't appropriate/clashes with background on coat of arms to be editted accordingly. Cheers, DJR (T) 00:11, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

County information

I don't want to sound US-centric, but I notice that when the county is added, it is added to the address information, despite the fact that this is not usually included in American street addresses. Would it be a good idea (?) or doable to list the county somewhere else in the infobox?

Also, I note that "school colors" will not display, but "school colours" does. Its no big deal to me, but someone always comes along and moves the info from "colours" to "colors", and then it doesn't show up. It is a bit of a pain to revert this.

Otherwise, it is a great design! LonelyBeacon (talk) 16:03, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

I thought I'd replied to this, but YES, the county should be elsewhere. No objection sounds like consent to me! tedder (talk) 06:04, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

use of italics

{{editprotected}} Can you add italics around the displayed results for both |newspaper= and |yearbook=? As publications, they should both always have italics. Thanks! Esrever (klaT) 00:05, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

OK, done. Since I figured that some uses of those parameters will already pass italicized values, I used HTML tags, else they would 'end up like this'.

Does the address parameter violate WP:DIRECTORY?

Kingturtle changed WP:NOT to disallow school addresses and started removing the addresses from schools. Since it's still a parameter here, there's a disconnect somewhere. Should we include street addresses, or remove the parameter?--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 19:56, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

All due respect to Kingturtle, but changing a policy to reflect somebody's opinion and then immediately acting on it as if there is a consensus for that opinion is not appropriate. While Directory of Birmingham, Alabama would be problematic, the address of a school is relevant and pertinent information as articles on schools are about a specific topic/building at a specific location. I see no reason to remove it from the infobox. --auburnpilot talk 20:14, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

You might want to take it over to Wikipedia talk:What Wikipedia is not#School street addresses, then -- that's probably a better central discussion location.--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 20:22, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

What do I need to download to make infobox school work on my machine?

I work in a school with an intermittent/non-existent internet connection, but would like the kids to work on a page for the school for the English language wiki anyway. I downloaded the mediawiki software and thats ok. Then I downloaded some school sites, many of which used the infobox school template. So I downloaded the infobox template. And then I downloaded a seemingly unending stream of templates trying to get the infobox template to work.

Can anyone give me a concise list of what I need to do to get infobox school template to work on my offline wiki?

Thanks. Jfmxl (talk) 13:08, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Have you installed the ParserFunctions extension? Without that, most of the rest of the templates won't work properly. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 14:22, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Chief custodian

Is there a reason that the chief custodian is listed in the infobox? This does not seem to be a notable position, and it is a target for mischievous students to put the names of their friends or school principal in there. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 01:21, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

How does one edit this thing?

Look at the edit history. I made two attempts to edit this thing so that instead of seeing

Students: 600

I would see

Number of students: 600

since apparently that's what was meant and it was not clear. And still isn't. But as you can see if you look at the appearance in article, of the template with my edits, that's not what appeared.

So how do you do something like this? Michael Hardy (talk) 05:20, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Your edit changed the title of the input field - so if someone using the template in an article included a line "| Number of students = 600", the output would be "Students: 600". To change the output, you want the line above - starting with an exclamation mark. If you change the text immediately after that to read "Number of students", you should get the desired effect. New Zealand schools

Most New Zealand schools have until now used {{Infobox NZ school}} instead of this one. We're discussing deprecating it in favour of this template at Template talk:Infobox NZ school#Years, but there is a change we would like to this template, to automatically add a category for New Zealand schools. Contact details

Why do we have address and phone number parameters in this ibox? We don't have them in any other one that I know of, we just limit location details to city/town, state and country, as anything more detailed is considered WP:DIRECTORY and/or WP:SPAM. What is the rationale for having them in this templates? Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 16:10, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

The address has been discussed and consensus is to keep it- schools are usually associated with specific buildings. Phone numbers certainly shouldn't be included, I've seen some purges of phone numbers occasionally. tedder (talk) 16:40, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. The information parameter appears to be being used for the phone number, even in the example in the template documentation, so perhaps that parameter should be deleted from the template. – ukexpat (talk) 16:53, 23 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd like to raise the question again as I'm not satisfied with that answer. Can you please address - or point me to historical discussions where it was addressed in a more complete manner - how the inclusion of this information doesn't violate the larger consensus that Wikipedia isn't a directory? Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 02:24, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
The discussion is archived at Wikipedia_talk:What_Wikipedia_is_not/Archive_28#School_street_addresses. There seems to be a consensus that a school's street address is usually encyclopedic, since a school is, in part a physical location--a campus or building--which is identified by it's address, as are other places (e.g., Template:Infobox skyscraper; Template:Infobox UK property). Same for geocodes. Both of these would be found in a gazetteer, which WP is. Concensus seemed to be against phone numbers, fax numbers, and emails, although I have found phone numbers to be more durable identifiers than school names and street addresses at least once.--Hjal (talk) 09:25, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Former heads?

I'd like to list former heads under their own category. Currently I'm making do with this: on the Dubai College page. I've tried but failed; how do I use the 'head_label', and 'head_name' categories? bigforrap (talk) 00:08, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Former heads do not belong in an infobox. (Arguably even current heads might not, as headship is generally ephemeral compared with the school.) Rich Farmbrough, 15:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC).

Disambiguation problems for public schools

I found this template whilst trying to fix pages that link to [Public School]. You automatically link to this page when someone puts "Public" in the "fundingtype" field. It really should link to an actual page rather than a disabiguation page, but there are two possible pages it could mean, mostly depending on the location of the school. I have no idea how one would go about fixing this. Escapepea (talk) 21:39, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Logos

On the template page, logo is listed as one of the possible parameters in one portion, but not others. In use, all it does is supplant the previously provided file from the image parameter with the plaintext filename of the parameter. Am I doing it incorrectly? If not, could someone fix this? NSWMaps (talk) 03:17, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

Right, the code only allows for one image in the upper section. There is an optional place for a second image in the lower section, using |picture= or |picture2=. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 02:47, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for new entry for USA schools: NCES School ID

While adding infoboxes for USA Primary and Secondary Schools, I have found a useful reference source that would, IMHO, make a good addition to this template. The NCES CCD website has fairly current enrollment numbers for most US Primary and Secondary schools. By including this reference code, I would suggest that it would make the job of updating enrollment for future years much easier. It also appears that there are already similar codes in the template for UK and NZ Schools. If you take a look at Hommocks Middle School, you will see how I have included the information using one of the free fields.--Arg342 (talk) 02:00, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Agree, except I suggest that the footnote for this line should also link the School ID number directly to the school's NCES entry. So, for your school, something like this: NCES School ID 361824001646. I'd do the same for Mamaroneck Union Free School District, adding a line like this: NCES District ID 3618240. --Hjal (talk) 03:59, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Agreed. I've been using it as a ref on occasion, would be nice to standardize that. tedder (talk) 05:26, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
As a follow up, I have created a new Template, currently at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Template:NCES School ID. Given a NCES School ID, it should produce hyperlinked text (Thanks Hjal!) and an inline named ref. If accepted, I will create a similar template for the District ID. Once both are done, I will work on changes to the infobox.--Arg342 (talk) 11:31, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
The template was accepted (now at Template:NCES School ID), so I will now start a little cleanup and real testing. I will also make the promised Template:NCES District ID.--Arg342 (talk) 17:35, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
I will now propose the new parameters. The proposed parameters are "us_nces_school_id" and "us_nces_district_id" both would take the respective ID number as the argument, and coincidentally, the new templates Template:NCES School ID and Template:NCES District ID we specifically designed for this purpose! The reason for the us_ prefix in the new names is to make it clear to a new editor that the parameter is specific to a country, something that threw me when I was new and did not understand about the other country specific codes!--Arg342 (talk) 00:07, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Proposed new field: "Sister school"?

I scanned the archives to see if it had already been proposed, so pardon me if it has been before. What of a field for "sister schools"? At least in the areas I am trying to clean up the infoboxes for, would it make sense to have a field noting the existence of a sister school (i.e. when there are two traditionally-linked single-sex schools who coordinate activities, e.g. dances, that would be impossible or unusual were they to do them alone), that are not "feeder schools" per se as they exist for the same grade levels. It is, IMO, rather as equal in importance to the section on "rivals", as some of these links have existed for decades and are an integral part of understanding the schools (and which schools link to which). Thank you for the consideration. Morgan Riley (talk) 03:27, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

When I read the edit summary, I was going to suggest adding a section to the article outline instead, thinking that you were talking about something like Sister cities. But the relationship you are talking about may deserve both article coverage and an infobox line. Perhaps you should work on the Sister schools article first, so it would be easier to define or explain what fits in the infobox. There are several examples that don't fit together exactly: this seems to be what you are describing: Benedictine High School (Cleveland, Ohio) and Beaumont School (Ohio), or Bellarmine College Preparatory and Presentation High School (but, note the length of Bellarmine's infobox already). The rest of these have different kinds of sisters in mind: Port Said International School; Sekolah Kebangsaan Convent Infant Jesus 2; Sister Cities International#Areas of focus.--Hjal (talk) 04:17, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
This idea seems reasonable to me. I would suggest that the instructions should state that the main article should mention this sister school relationship as well. That article text should clarify the sister's relationship (same management, mutual agreement, other bonds, etc.), give the history of the arrangement and, of course, references.--Arg342 (talk) 10:19, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Edit request for new fields from Arg342, 4 June 2011

{{edit protected}} Please copy the sandbox version Template:Infobox school/sandbox to the live version Template:Infobox school to implement new fields. Note that the the sandbox has the {{template sandbox notice}} instead of {{documentation}} at the bottom. Of course, the template should have the documentation tag when done.

This request will implement new fields sister_school, us_nces_district_id, and us_nces_school_id. The use of the new fields is demonstrated in sandbox test case 4. I don't see any ill side effects with the new version.

These new fields were discussed in the above sections 'Suggestion for new entry for USA schools: NCES School ID' and 'Proposed new field: "Sister school"?'. Neither had significant objections. The last comment for each was 16 days ad 9 days ago respectively.

Also note the I have updated the live documentation Template:Infobox school/doc in anticipation of fulfillment of this request, however the new fields in the documentation are carefully noted as not yet available.

Done. Thanks! Looking forward to this, I've used NCES as a source for quite a while. tedder (talk) 02:23, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Edit request from Saiarcot895, 18 July 2011

I see that the address and the name have hCard microdata applied to them. However, the URL does not have hCard microdata. Can someone add the hCard microdata info to the URL?

Saiarcot895 (talk) 19:12, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

I am not sure this is needed. If {{URL}} is used, that is supposed to add the microformat data... This may simply need more clarification in the template documentation and in {{ISCL}}. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Arg342 (talkcontribs) 23:19, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Disabled request for now. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:40, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
I changed the documentation and {{ISCL}}.--Arg342 (talk) 11:50, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Does the CEEB code for a school belong in Wikipedia?

I have been working on an article or two and went to the trouble of looking up a CEEB code for a US high school. Afterwards I thought about this and did a little research. As far as I can tell, CEEB codes are only used by the bureaucracy at the College Board to identify a school. They do not seem to be used by the press or by any useful lookup tool that I could find. Should this be removed from the template? --Arg342 (talk) 12:10, 25 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm sure a person could say the same for lots of mundane facts in Wikipedia, but it might be useful to someone. One good thing about the CEEB is that it uniquely identifies a school. If a school doesn't have aa CEEB, then I would question its credibility. Last year, I was looking up CEEB for schools in Kansas using a CEEB lookup on a college website, but they had since overhauled that webpage, and I haven't spent anytime on google looking for alternatives. • SbmeirowTalk • 14:41, 25 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok, here is what you add for ceeb
ceeb = NUMBER <ref>[http://www.suny.edu/student/search_highschool/index.cfm High School CEEB Code Search]</ref>
SbmeirowTalk • 01:13, 29 July 2011 (UTC)
I had found that tool at the SUNY website, but also found a tool at the College Board website, which I assume is more authoritative. Last week, I put a link to the latter in the instructions for the template.
A CEEB code in this template would only be for a US High School (the reasoning is that CEEB is only for US High Schools and post secondary, but this template shouldn't be used for post secondary). The NCES School ID is another identifier for a US High School, but that one links to a great deal of data about the school. I don't think the same can be said for the CEEB code. I am simply having trouble envisioning how the CEEB code would be of value to a reader or an editor.--Arg342 (talk) 10:21, 29 July 2011 (UTC)

Orange (colour)

Frequently, links to Orange are added via the colors/colours line of this template. Yet that page is a disambiguation; neither Orange (fruit) nor Orange (colour) is clearly the primary topic.

Could a message warning editors to link to the latter and not the former be added to the documentation for the template?

Violet and Lime are also DABs, and Silver and Gold describe the metals. I don't know if they come up as often. Cnilep (talk) 05:19, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

There should never be a reason to link to the page on a colour here regardless. It's textbook overlinking. Not one single reader here will genuinely need more information on the colour orange when looking at the infobox. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) - talk 09:29, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
I agree that it should not be necessary to link such common words. Maybe a warning to that affect should be added, given that (a) many, many such links are added, and (b) many new users employ the template in creating pages about their schools. Cnilep (talk) 02:08, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
It's not only that such overlinking bothers me, but there seems the concomitant issue of capitalisation, as already given in the example above which is totally up the creek. I do what I can to correct these when I come across them, but the problem is just so pervasive... --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:28, 28 August 2011 (UTC)
