nobold edit

Should this use {{Nobold}} also? thanks, ErikHaugen (talk) 23:25, 25 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Probably. I'll go ahead and add that. Thanks for the keen observation! Bob the Wikipedian (talkcontribs) 03:43, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Breaks italic title? edit

The dagger seems to be breaking the italic title - see Sanajeh for an example - the italictitle is necessary for some reason. ErikHaugen (talk) 04:42, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

This appears to be resolved...sorry I missed this topic! Bob the WikipediaN (talkcontribs) 02:13, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, at some point in the last 10 months this got resolved :) ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 03:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Controversy edit

There is a discussion which would affect this template's use: Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Icons#Dagger_.28typography.29 ErikHaugen (talk | contribs) 23:15, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Span title: Extinct edit

Please add a span title of the word "Extinct" to the template. This will allow viewers of the dagger symbol produced by the template to place the cursor over the symbol and view what it means, as various other templates do for visual aid (such as {{IPA}}).

It should be added (as the bold text shown below) in the following manner:

<span title="Extinct">{{noitalic|{{nobold|†}}}}</span>

This displays the dagger below, which provides useful information about its meaning in taxonomy:

The following is an example of how this would appear on a list within a taxobox:

Thank you! — |J~Pæst|  04:43, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

  Done I also added a little more documentation. --Redrose64 (talk) 10:15, 14 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just FYI, this has no effect in Chrome/Chromium, as of this writing, so don't depend on it.  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  05:56, 1 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

See also edit

It may be helpful to create a See also link to the similar Template:Dagger. Usage would probably become one subheading, and See also, another. JKDw (talk) 09:00, 24 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

optional link? edit

I don't know enough coding to implement this, but how do you all think about adding a parameter like

|link=y

so that the dagger could link to Extinction on an opt-in basis? --Nessie (talk) 18:19, 5 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

This should be the default, because readers cannot be expected to know what the dagger means. I also don't think there needs to be an opt-out option; if a user wishes to do so they could use the plain dagger symbol without using the template. Just adding the link would be an easy thing to do. This has also just been discussed at Talk:Tyrannosaurus#†. Can we get a consensus here to implement it? --Jens Lallensack (talk) 15:13, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Support a link to Extinction that is at least the default if not universal. --Kent G. Budge (talk) 16:00, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Support - the daggger makes it easier to distinguish extinct and non-extinct creatures, and adding a link to it will make it clearer what's its meaning. JurassicClassic767 (talk | contribs) 16:29, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Support - It makes for clarity. How-ever, is there any other know use of the dagger that needs to be excluded? If so, can this be easily handled, if not then maybe it should not be optional? Kdammers (talk) 02:29, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't think it has any other uses; because the template is called "Extinct"; it should only be used to mark extinct taxa. --Jens Lallensack (talk) 08:15, 1 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
