Pseudocalanus newmani edit

  • ... that although the copepod Pseudocalanus newmani prefers to eat centric diatoms, the aldehydes produced by the diatom genus Thalassiosira are toxic to the young? Source: "Hatching success fell below 50% during three consecutive weeks in 2003, which suggests that the toxic effect persists for a period of time and/or that toxins build up in the females tissues and have a cumulative effect over time.", "Pseudocalanus is mainly herbivorous and a preference for centric diatoms, e.g., of the genus Thalassiosira, has repeatedly been reported.", and "The causative agents of the negative effects have been identified as a class of aldehydes". – [1]; full text can be found if you search the name of the paper on google scholar
  • ALT1 ... that the copepod Pseudocalanus newmani prefers to feed on centric diatoms even though the diatom genus Thalassiosira is toxic to its young?

  • This article is new enough and long enough. The hook facts are cited inline, the article is neutral and I detected no copyright issues. I have added ALT1. A QPQ has been done. It would be nice to have more wikilinks in the article as there are a lot of technical terms. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 17:47, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Without reading the article, the hook is also too technical and not at all hooky for a "broad audience". Yoninah (talk) 20:27, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
I'd really like to see this article on the mainpage, because of how interesting this species is. And if this is too technical, then I would like an explanation. This is because terms such as genus are basic biology terms that anybody who went to secondary school (in the US, at the very least) should know. Also, the terms like "copepod" or "centric diatoms" are just words used to give context to people who need it; you could just say "of the copepod P. newmani includes the genus", but it wouldn't be totally accurate to the source. • Certainly I'm not referring to "simple" words like "genus". I'm referring to the technical terms, which are all linked but are also all non-comprehensible to an average reader like me. Perhaps it would help to remove one of them, like:
  • ALT3: ... that the preferred food of the copepod Pseudocalanus newmani includes the genus Thalassiosira, which is toxic to its young? Yoninah (talk) 22:59, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm fine with that hook. Thanks! RileyBugz私に叫ぼう私の編集 15:40, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Thank you. @Cwmhiraeth: could you approve ALT3 so I can promote it? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 16:46, 19 August 2018 (UTC)
