Established in 1982, Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) is the first comprehensive graduate school in Iran. In particular, majority of Ph.D. programs in basic sciences and engineering were initially offered at TMU. As an elite exclusively postgraduate university, its primary mission is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers as well as providing an environment for world class research. TMU currently offers M.A/M.Sc. degrees in 171 academic programs and Ph.D. degrees in 132 academic programs, with more than 7300 and 3700 students in each level, respectively. At present, there are 17 faculties and 14 affiliated research centers in the university. The university enjoys the cooperation of more than 700 full-time academic members.
Faculty of AgricultureEdit
The agriculture sector in Iran has been viewed as a fundamental contributor to the economy of the country. Currently, agriculture furnishes 25 percent of Iran?s GNP, 27 percent of employment and 85 percent of food demand satisfaction, as well as a large capacity for export of several agricultural and horticultural commodities. Iran enjoys specific geographical conditions such as benefiting from approximately 250 sunny days per year, the possibility of orchard establishment at an altitude of even 2600 m above sea level, the capacity for cultivation of more than 400 agricultural and horticultural crops throughout the country, and dramatic climate diversity. As a whole, these features make it possible to produce high quality of various agricultural and horticultural commodities. In order to strengthen and improve agriculture industry and universities involved with teaching and research in agriculture, College of Agriculture was established at Tarbiat Modares University (T.M.U.) in 1983. The primary objective was to train and educate graduate students at M.Sc. and Ph.D. level for work as professionals in the universities and research institutes as well as in the private sectors. A wide range of scientific courses are offered for postgraduate students. Specialized seminars guided by faculty members help students focus their research in areas related to their interest as well as solving agricultural challenges at the national and global scale. They will become highly qualified specialists in practical application of agriculture and be able to conduct research and teaching at different universities in Iran after graduation.

Faculty of Basic SciencesEdit
Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) was established in 1982 as the first post revolution graduate school, in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The meaning of TMU in Farsi implicates its main objective which is to serve as an institute for training university professors. One of the main constituents of TMU is Faculty of Basic Sciences (FBS) which was originally composed of Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. Taking advantage of close cooperation of prominent professors, FBS soon turned into the most prestigious of its kind. It provided knowledgeable faculty members for many colleges, universities, and research centers across Iran. Rapid growth was brought about through rather high student enrolment, increase in the number of faculty members, and agglomeration of research facilities. As a result, Departments of Biology, Mathematics, and Top Technologies formed their own corresponding Colleges. Hence, at this time FBS only includes Departments of Chemistry, Geology and Physics.
The Chemistry Department has 16 full time faculty members who are active in 4 major areas: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. The Geology Department has 12 full time faculty members who work in 4 major areas: Economic, Geology, Engineering Geology, Petrology, and Tectonics. The Physics Department has 9 full time faculty members, active in 3 major areas: Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condense phase, and Particle Physics.
Meeting big challenges, and crossing over exciting boundaries of science and technology is rightfully made possible through the wise leadership of FBS distinguish professors implemented by enthusiastic post doctorates, MS and PhD graduate students, as well as the FBS nonacademic staff. FBS operates in a very friendly, but competitive atmosphere. It is devoted to excellence and expansion in Pure and Applied research. FBS serves the scientific and industrial interests of its community while strives for contributing to the advancement of science at a global level.FBS has already published numerous high quality research articles in high impact factor international scientific journals. This Faculty and its researchers are often ranked highly by international scientific organizations.
