Talk:Yeni Mosque, Mytilene

Yeni or new edit

The page has been moved from Yeni Mosque to New Mosque. Just out of curiosity; was it necessary ? The name Yeni here is a proper noun. In WP most historical places retain their original names and translating the name of the mosque which has been abandoned after the population exchange doesn't make sense. Requested move 10 November 2018 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: no consensus to move the page at this time, per the discussion below. The stable title is Yeni Mosque, Mytilene, where the page was for over two years before the moves at the beginning of November. As such, leaving the article where it is for now. I have move protected the page to prevent further moves from taking place without new move discussions in the future. Dekimasuよ! 10:41, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yeni Mosque, MytileneNew Mosque, Mytilene? – This article has been moved 8 times since July 2014.[1] Yeni Cami, Mytilene --> Yeni Mosque, Mytilene --> New Mosque, Mytilene --> Yeni Mosque, Mytilene --> New Mosque, Mytilene --> Yeni Mosque, Mytilene --> New Mosque (Mytilene) --> Yeni Mosque, Mytilene. I deleted the redirect Yeni Mosque, Mytilene[2]. It was moved from New Mosque, Mytilene back to Yeni Mosque, Mytilene as I was preparing this request for posting. Google news search: "Yeni Mosque" 45 results [3] "New Mosque Mytilene" 0 results [4] Yeni Mosque is a dab page and shows other example article names containing Yeni Mosque. I think it will help if there is a consensus on the name of this article to help put an end to these moves. I listed New Mosque, Mytilene in this request only because that is where it previously was. Yeni Mosque, Mytilene appears to be the appropriate name as against all other names listed above, so I oppose the move as to all other possible new names (e.g., the article should be named Yeni Mosque, Mytilene). • Oppose. "New Mosque" is, as such, a perfectly valid name for this building, as it translates the Turkish name; however, convention with such edifices is to either retain the original name or give the current name, and "Yeni Mosque" is the better option because it covers both these cases. It renders the original Turkish name (anyone who wants can google it, it is a form widely used), as well as the current (Greek) name, which invariably has retained the first element (Yeni) as a proper name, as Nedim Ardoğa points out above. This is analogous to Hagia Sophia being still known in Turkish as Ayasofya, or the Fethiye Mosque (Athens) still being known as Φετιχιέ rather than with a translated name in Greek.
