Failed .NET service?

I wonder what “Microsoft's failed .NET service” means. I don’t think that .NET Framework can be called a “failed service” (or a service at all, for that matter). Perhaps the author meant Microsoft Passport, which was previously known as .NET Passport, and is indeed a failed initiative (at least the article says so). But I don’t see how it relates to Windows Live. Could someone please clarify this? --qvvx 19:16, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I believe I mentioned this, and I did indeed refer to the .NET initiative, which was to completely merge Windows and the web. Windows .NET, along with the .NET Passport, and many more ideas that were ".NET" have been scrapped. Windows .NET has turned into Windows Vienna, .NET Passport has turned into Windows Live Passport, and the only .NET feature left is the programming languages (i.e. .NET framework). "Windows .NET has turned into Windows Vienna" -- Microsoft has AFAIK never claimed this; if they have, please post a source. The official information about Vienna is more than scarce at this point. Actually, Windows Vista will be the first Windows client OS to come with the .NET Framework integrated, and Windows Server 2003 was originally supposed to be called Windows .NET Server [1] but changed due to the .NET confusion. As such, it's the first Windows server OS to have the .NET Framework integrated. -- Northgrove 20:11, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Name Change

latest release date

I have updated the latest released version but I do not know the date, its been a few days and no one has fixed it and added a date, anyone has any idea? Eshcorp 13:30, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I have been updating the latest preview release for some time now. The original was on a template - [3]. Since the edit by Pikablu0530 04:50, 23 December 2006 the format has changed so the update version is now on the article page and not on a template. Suggest deleting the template? The graphic on the page for the latest version shows an older build. The latest production build was pushed to production on May 6th, 2008 - 2.0.2500.30 --Sboots88 (talk) 19:14, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Updates

Windows Live OneCare is no longer beta. In the latest blog post on the WLOC blog they state that WLOC should start showing up in stores. I have posted a new screen shot and updated the date in witch version 1.0.0971.18 came out. Gamerzworld 06:29, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

It is still in beta. It may be only days or weeks until it's considered "released", but it is still beta. The current version on desktops (.18 or .20) is not the "gold" code. SchmuckyTheCat 06:55, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Criticism

Many of the products touted features, such as updating Windows, defragmentng the hard drive, or supplying a firewall, are already present in Windows XP by default, or there are freely available alternatives.

This sentence is completely true, but it isn't cited as any major criticism by a reputable source. One of the stated goals of OneCare is to bring these features that most inexperienced users do not do and do it for them. As such if any reputable source (ie, not a blog) has made this criticism, it should be cited. SchmuckyTheCat 06:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Troubleshooting

When I was troubleshooting OneCare with a professional Microsoft technician over email, she mentioned that you can quickly close and restart the OneCare program using a Run command. Just type in "net stop winss" to end OneCare and "net start winss" to open it again. Of course, you could always end it with Task Manager, but I think OneCare is built on several programs running. This is probably the safest way to close it. I think this tip is best used when installing software or drivers etc. that require internet access IF you have the Firewall set to "Automatic (prompt)". Criticism

In the Criticism section, a reference is made to an "independent" product testing.Link However, readers have to register to view the reference. Does this story exist anywhere else? Because the current link is unusable as per WP:EL. I have not removed it but, if it is not accessible to the general public, it is not usable as a reference. Furthermore, every negative criticism in the article is from a competing software company. This is clear conflict of interest and also violates the external links policy. I'm not advocating their removal, but before anyone adds more criticisms from companies with a clear conflict of interest they should probably discuss it here, because it giving undue weight to the criticisms. - WeniWidiWiki 02:34, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Virus Bulletin is a sister company of Sophos, not owned by Sophos. And, indeed, it is editorally independent. (Sophos has failed the VB100 test in the past, too, like most AV companies have at some point.) Don't want to edit it myself, due to erm... "Windows Live OneCare (along with three other products) failed to detect 100% of viruses" makes it sound as if Windows LiveOneCare detected 0% of viruses, which is false. Can anyone reword this? 142.151.160.64 14:29, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Can't someone with some insight update this section? It's my understanding that a couple months later OneCare subsequently passed this certification, showing marked improvement. GeCad mention needed in article

According to Microsoft, this product was built around GeCad developed code, not written in-house as the article implies.

Trial period

I just wanted to bring something up:

• with OneCare v1.5, my trial period was 90 days from installation date;
• with a subscription (bought for free from the 1.5 beta), trial period was 1 year;
• with OneCare v2.0, my trial period is now 224 days from installation date.

Should this be mentioned in the Activation section, perhaps? Or is it a bit technical? I only mention this because the v2.0 trial lasts much longer than the v1.5 trial. Thanks! --rjcuk 11:26, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Compatibility with Mac

The OneCare website references only PCs. Nevermind that the Mac is also a PC. In Microsoft lingo, PC means "Not Mac". However, I could find no definitive compatibility statement. Rklawton (talk) 13:42, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

No to what I believe your question is. You can run Windows on recent Apple hardware and OneCare will then run on it. However OneCare does not run as a native OSX application. 69.204.13.43 (talk) 18:16, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Windows 7

Should we add something about Live OneCare not working with Windows 7? People (myself included) who had subscriptions and upgraded to Windows 7 have no use for our subscriptions since it doesn't install in 7!
