The Real Question

How in the name of all that is holy does one pronounce “Bagehot”? —75.18.113.152 05:41, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Contrary to the article I think it's more like bajot not bajit. Maybe depends on American or UK accent, but UK pronunciation is definitely the former.

It's actually "Badgit". I know because I am a family descendant He was a second cousin (removed a few times!) If anyone is interested in family history I can help. Rodbry 16:15, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, but info based on a family connection fails WP:OR and WP:V. Collins English Dictionary gives the pronunciation as /ˈbædʒət/ and Chambers Biographical Dictionary (which doesn't use the IPA) as baj'ot. Vilĉjo (talk) 12:05, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

I call that petty (as Rodbry must surely be correct) but out of respect to our shared encyclopedic credentials I won't change the article. It's a pity, as according to this,also not a suitable source, The Economist's audio edition has it as "bajit" too. Though "badge-uht" which is my own version of the phonetic /ˈbædʒət/ in the article, isn't all that differentThomas Peardew (talk) 16:57, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Bagehot and Budgett

I would just love to know whether there is a connection between the Bagehot and Budgett families. There are coincidences: both families originate apparently in Somerset (Budgett in Nunney 1550) and both names probably come from French "bougette". Any ideas?
