Messori had a completely secular upbringing. edit
This is nonsense. He was baptised as a child (see the Spanish Wikipedia) so at the very least his parents probably hedged their bets between secularism and Christianity. Growing up in a small provincial town in Italy he probably received a lot of healthy Christian doctrine all through his childhood and adolescence.
