Talk:Timeline of European imperialism

This article is about European imperialism, rather than imperialism in general. It disturbs me that someone would call it Timeline of imperialism, as if Chinese imperialism never existed. In fact, we also have a List of territories occupied by Imperial Japan. I'm not saying that one is as "bad" as the other; that's for the reader to decide.

But I had a student ask me for information on "Imperialism" a couple of months ago, and he was under the impression that only America had ever engaged in imperialism. When I tried to tell him about non-European instances of empire building, colonization, exploitation etc. he became quite put out: I was contradicting what his New York City high school teachers had told him.

Regardless of how we feel about the relative merits of various empires or civilizations, can we not at least admit that they existed? --Uncle Ed (talk) 20:13, 4 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
