Weasel words edit

A citation or two for the following rather negative paragraph would be nice...

Perceived by some as sell-outs who sold a romanticised version of Scottish kitsch, others argue that their success paved the way for later folk artists to become well known without having to endure the indignities of being draped in tartan and made into a parody of their own culture.

I've never met anybody who thought of the Corries as sellouts or of their music as romanticised "kitsch" although I am prepared to believe that such misguided people might exist. In the meantime I have removed the sentence from the introductory paragraph, a paragraph where it is probably inappropriate in any case. -- Derek Ross | Talk 03:46, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you Derek, I would not consider them sell-out's in any way shape or form. There were certainly those in the Scottish folk scene in the 1970's (perhaps jealous of their crowd pulling power) who accused them of being too populist and decried the blouson uniform the boys used to wear. But for me they were the epitome of passion and belonging without having to be hip. So what if my Gran loved them....the music moved her and it also moved me and made me proud of my heritage and history. --Stueym 18:01, 22 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

They understood and respected the musical tradition. And they created something unique of their own that remained rooted in the tradition. But sell-out? I've never heard anyone suggest that! It's nonsense! Bluewave 21:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Check any discussion of the Corries on internet forums such as [mudcat.org]. Certainly many people considered their approach to be commercial and populist, and to some extent it certainly was. On the other hand, they avoided the Calum Kennedy/Alexander Brothers/Andy Stewart approach and offered a bridge for many people from that side of the Scottish music scene into other performers who had slightly rougher corners. Sure there are plenty of groups that have and had rougher corners but I'd love to see a citation on that comment about them being too "populist" -- not to say some internet one where you can find something to say anything. Frankly, that is such a personal opinion--and really what IS "too populist", I see no reason why it should be in Wikipedia.

The Balladeers edit

Rather bad form to be adding your own links, but having had a poke around the site in question it is a good resource for information on a lot of singers and is a link worth retaining. Calum 16:12, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yep. That's what I thought. -- Derek Ross | Talk 20:32, 26 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Corries.png edit

Image:Corries.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 21:26, 2 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

NPOV edit

Article features a number of non-NPOV statements. Prime example: "best album" yet. Please correct. 139.168.177.116 06:17, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You know which statements you are talking about. Why don't you correct them yourself ? Or at least list them so that someone else knows which ones you mean. -- Derek Ross | Talk 18:21, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ronnie Brown edit

The link to Ronnie Brown (in the second sentence of this article) redirects back to this article. That's not very useful.... 12.76.143.187 04:12, 5 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
