Ownership Section

The Ownership section states ownership by various companies persumably of the Telefónica company in terms of stock. While the figures are provided unreferenced, I do not dispute there correctness (atleast for now). However, the total for the three listed companies is less than 20%. For correctness shouldn't the remaining >80% be specified (even if specified as state owned or a lump grouping of stakeholders etc.)? Canderra 13:36, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

The problem is that being Telefonica a public company, its shareholder base is very open, so you are talking a huge group of minority shareholders. It is of common use in the finance community to only mention the most important shareholders.

Movistar

Actually, Movistar is the brand name that Telefonica uses for its cellular operations in most of the countries. However, it is incorrect to consider that as the name of a subsidiary. The correct name should be Telefonica Moviles.

Corporative

I think that the page should be revised. I thought that the information here was very poor. No accurate corporative information, no accurate data about the business in each country where Telefonica got interests, etc. Taking in fact that this is one of the top-5 phone operators in the world, well...it was poor.

Telefónica is not public!!!

Telefónica is a private company since a few years ago. Since 1997, the Spanish Gov. doesn't have any participation in that company... and Telefónica is the root company, there are too much companies of Telefónica like Telefónica de España (Spain's Telefónica), Telefónica de Alemania (Deutchland's Telefónica), etc.. so if it were (it isn't) public, it were only in Spain... and Telefónica isn't only in Spain...

Public/Private

In spanish, we use "Pública" to mean owned by the state, you can't translate literally. The article is correct, Telefónica is a public company in the sense that anyone can buy stock. The correct terms are these:

Business Practices

This section is poorly written and highly POV. I think it should be removed from the article (commented out) and hacked at until a less libelous version is formulated. -Etafly 14:54, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

I speak spanish at native level; and I have following the links. The links are to well-known spanish newspapers and consumer gropus, and the facts are true. As far as the facts are true, I can not understand why you call the last part "libelous".

Anyway, the first part of "Business Practices", what is a literal translation of Telefonica's webpage, is highly questionable to me. Wikipedia is not a place to put free advertisement, and the first paragraphs are a delaration of intentions of bussiess practices of Telefonica, made by Telefonica. This is out of Wikipedia standards. (Since when we let each company to write its own entry to wikipedia with its PR "information"?)

IMHO, best is to remove the "free advertisement" firsts paragraphs, and rename the critical part of the document to "Controversy". This would be quite fair to Telefonica (because the information of the fines and the consumer groups "bandaancha" and "asociacion de internautas" is true, and can be found in spanish newpapers; and we are considering as "controversy" judgments what become final and therefore incontestable)

I have done a re-edit of the Bussiness Practices Section in order to improve its poor writing without changing any fact except for the detail that I think it is not proper to talk only about "consumer groups" and not about "user communities". "Asociación de Internautas" can be considered as a consumer group but "Bandaancha" is more likely to be a user community rather than a consumer group. The abuses exposed in that section are true, but they are exposed in a poor and biased way which is against the principle of neutrality held by Wikipedia's principles. Anyway, there some other abuses done by Telefonica which should also be mentioned in that section. For example, the controversy between Telefónica and Jazztel (Jazz Telecom, another Spanish communications company). Regarding the first part of the Bussiness Section, where Telefonica's bussiness principles are stated, I don't see any problem as long as it is clearly indicated that those lines are written from the point of view of the company and that that point of view not necessarily matches the one of its customers. I have removed the advertising posted by 81.47.192.162, an IP which points directly at Telefónica's offices in Spain and re-inserted the original text regarding Telefónica's business practices in South America. Unfair practices against consumers in Germany

The unfair practices described in the Wiki article about unnecessary delays or making it nearly impossible to transfer a mobile phone number to another company (Telefónica#Monopoly) are also common in Germany (O2 (brand)) with various sources being readily available in Germany, bringing Telefonica frequently into headlines of the German media and in conflict with German laws. 2A02:560:589D:800:78C2:3EBF:FC50:672E (talk) 03:44, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
