Fictional character? edit
The Sweet and Lowdown article begins by saying that Emmet Ray is a fictional character. According to IMDB's Emmet Ray character page, Emmet Ray did exist. [1]
The IMDB page references a Jazz Encyclopedia: Encyclopedia of Obscure Jazz Artists, Mirage Press, by Dirk Dickens, which I have not yet had the oportunity to read.--Pedro magalhaes (talk) 00:36, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Confusing and Contradictory Passage edit
This passage in Sweet and Lowdown#Development is confuzziling. "Allen had originally planned to play Ray himself, but the director cast Sean Penn." (Allen is the director.) This is bizarre. From what I've gathered, this passage states that Allen wanted to play Ray, but he overruled...himself? Where there two directors? Because in the infobox, it only labels one: Allen. Was there a mysterious shadow director, pulling the strings of the production from behind the scenes? Or, much more likely, Allen wanted to play Ray, but then chose Penn for some unknown reason. I'm probably overthinking this, but either way, I can't verify it, and it's really confusing. CrowEater (talk) 04:25, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
- The introduction of that construction goes back to this edit in 2007, where the intention seems to be to avoid repetition of "Allen" by referring to him as "the director", just as Johnny Depp is referred to in the next sentence as "the actor". "Confident Jazz Guitarist Emmet Ray" edit
The opening paragraph refers to "confident jazz guitarist Emmet Ray". At some point in the past, the phrase was "self-confident jazz guitarist Emmet Ray". My recollection of the film is that Ray was gifted, egotistical, and highly insecure. To call him "confident" suggests a self-possession that the character lacked. Is this the best adjective to summarise Ray's character? Do we need an adjective there at all? Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 15:05, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
