Verification edit

I didn't like all of the writing here, which was at times choked with commas and occasionally rattled with ungainly constructions. This was the exception but it is never a pretty site. I'd like to see more sitations (you know, as in more than one). Also, I think this article needs more sources.

As a start it is fine but I'm not convinced of all the information here. More references are needed. The numbers of the population quickly fluctuate and, as of October 2009, it is still in trouble, has bounced back considerably from 2008. The population should be checked on and updated in this article from time to time. Gingermint (talk) 19:50, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I correct myself. There are two sitations. Still (just to be stubborn), I think there should be more references. Well, really there should be (stubborn or no). Gingermint (talk) 20:21, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Naughty Shark edit

There is no mention of its voracious appetite. Also there are, believe it or not, cultural references to the animal. There is a certain amount of sailor's lore that should be included. Gingermint (talk) 19:50, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Longest Vertebrate Gestation Period? edit

The page for the Frilled shark claims an even longer period of gestation of up to 3 1/2 years, so I think the sentence "Mating takes place in the winter months with gestation lasting 22–24 months (the longest of any vertebrate)." is cast into doubt.

Thoughts? Duncan Jaques (talk) 07:55, 23 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I deleted the statement. I could imagine a revised statement referencing the Frilled shark research might be even better. -IGTaylor (talk) 19:52, 24 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Rock Salmon edit

Although certainly once referred to as Rock Salmon in UK fish and chip shops, this is no longer the case and hasn't been for at least 20 years. I believe the name was judged misleading and unacceptable under Trading Standards legislation as the fish is unrelated to salmon. Where still sold it is referred to as Huss.

Oddly enough, Huss is now a more expensive fish than actual (farmed) salmon. --Ef80 (talk) 12:04, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Recent Recovery of Eastern US Atlantic Stocks/ US Fishery Control edit

As the son of a fisherman, and the operator of a longlining boat for Spiny Dogfish, I can honestly say that the stocks in my area (Eastern US Atlantic) have recovered greatly. In fact, it takes a master fisherman to avoid being swamped by dogfish. Their prolific rate of procreation is somewhat inhibited by the fact that they give live birth, but the large amount of fish in the area prove that they've recovered hugely from previous stock evaluations. My suggestion is to add a section about recovery, if only for this one area.

Also, the bottom paragraphs that claim "the fisheries are almost completely unsupervised" are grossly incorrect and biased, in fact, the Quota system is well in place and limits fishermen to 4000 lbs. per day at a total quota (in 2012) of 47 million lbs.

Map needs update edit

  Resolved

The distribution map should be updated to remove the North Pacific, reflecting restoration in recent years of Pacific spiny dogfish as a separate species. IGTaylor (talk) 16:10, 21 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Update: I updated the map myself by simply removing the blue areas in the North Pacific IGTaylor (talk) 18:33, 9 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
