Talk:Southern League (1964–present)

Latest comment: 7 months ago by NatureBoyMD in topic League map

There was no "D" level ball in 1965 edit

Leagues below "A" level were abolished in the mid-1950s, except for the "Rookie Leagues", so since then there have been technically no B-, C-, or D-level leagues. So the article is incorrect but I don't know enough to fix it. Does anyone else? Rlquall 13:33, 24 Apr 2005 (UTC)

– This article is the primary topic. This article drew 16982 page views over the last 90 days; Southern League (speedway) drew just 49, and Southern League (ice hockey) drew just 274. The other links on this page are not officially titled Southern League, meaning (provided they are accurate) that most people look for them under different names. Also, the only one that had more than 10,000 views over the last 90 days was Southern Football League, and a hatnote can point people to it. -- Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 19:05, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment this page is screwed up, since it isn't the "Southern League (baseball)" It's the "Southern League (1964-present)", previously known as the "South Atlantic League (1936-1963)", the article conflates all the various "South Atlantic" and "Southern" Leagues into the history of this league. -- 65.94.79.6 (talk) 23:37, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
    • Comment, as nominator: Even if the above comment is accurate, this article is still the primary topic for Southern League, so no (1964-present) is needed in the title unless by consensus other editors decide this is not the primary topic. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 10:09, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
      • WP:PDAB, we have other articles on other "Southern League"s in baseball, the current disambiguator is insufficient. -- 65.94.79.6 (talk) 21:22, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose There are enough other entities with the same or similar name and the football league has enough views that I would say there is no primary topic. -DJSasso (talk) 12:22, 18 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - Agree with DJSasso, there is no primary topic. Plus I disagree with 65.94.79.6 that it should be moved to "Southern League (1964-present)." Article title should remain as it is. Again, there's no primary topic as far as DJ and I are concerned. – Michael (talk) 01:25, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose; that particular baseball league appears to fail WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. bobrayner (talk) 20:36, 22 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

South Atlantic League (1904–1963) article Merger edit

I propose merging the South Atlantic League (1904–1963) article into the SL article cause the South Atlantic League (1904–1963) and the most recent SL is the same league, just changed names.Granthew (talk) 19:13, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Oppose - While the SL grew out of the SAL (1904-63), the SL (per the SAL article) "elected to start with a clean slate and not maintain records prior to the 1964 season. Thusly, the 51-year history of the league was retired with the South Atlantic League name."[1] I think they ought to be considered separate leagues. NatureBoyMD (talk) 23:08, 24 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
I understand now.Granthew (talk) 00:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oppose, for the same reasons as cited by NatureBoyMD above. Granthew, is the suggestion now closed? I ask because I see you removed a "merge from" hatnote from this article on February 25 (thank you). However, the South Atlantic League (1904–1963) article still has a "merge to" hatnote, which should also be removed. Dmoore5556 (talk) 05:11, 15 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Forgot to remove it, thanks for letting me know.Granthew (talk) 18:51, 21 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wrong Article to Rename edit

@Dwelker7450: The Southern League playing in 2022 is not the one founded in 1964; instead, it is the Double-A South league that was founded in 2021. The previous Southern League went out of business in 2020 and the new league has now acquired it's name. It's the Double-A South article that should be renamed. -- Pemilligan (talk) 20:23, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

See WT:MLB#Minor leagues, or, what is old is new again, which is where this decision will probably be made. BilCat (talk) 20:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
I am so sorry, I assumed the Double A-South would fold and the original Southern League would resume. Dwelker7450 (talk) 20:31, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
The Southern League page has been restored to before I made changes. Again I apologize. Dwelker7450 (talk) 20:35, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It will probably be treated as one league, but that hasn't been decided yet. It'd be good if both of you could participate in the discussions. BilCat (talk) 20:39, 16 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Dwelker7450: Thank you for the restoration.
@BilCat: Thank you for pointing us to that discussion.

League map edit

Can we get a map that shows the team names? A bunch of numbered pins is pretty much worthless. -- Pemilligan (talk) 01:12, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, please. The new map is not an improvement. NatureBoyMD (talk) 01:37, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
