Soccer? edit

Since South Africans call soccer soccer, shouldn't the title be the South African national soccer team? Joziboy 27 Feb 2006, 18:54 UTC

The governing body is the South African Football Association, so I think football should remain. Perhaps there should be a divert from South Africa national socccer team. Dancarney 22:22, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the article should use "soccer" instead of football. First, the article has a South African English tag, as it's about a South African topic. Second, "soccer" the "Association" in Association Football, so it's just as accurate as "football", and more specific. Paulgush (talk) 20:59, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

RfC at Talk:Soccer in South Africa edit

A request for comment regarding the usage of "football" or "soccer", which applies to this and other South African football articles, has been opened at Talk:Soccer in South Africa for anyone who is interested. S.A. Julio (talk) 01:24, 5 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Indeed. The outcome of that debate was that "soccer" should be used on the basis of South African English. The argument that "football" appears in the name of the govenring body, South African Football Association, but that "soccer" doesn't are mistaken because soccer is in fact short for "association". More importantly it's irrelevant. Wikipedia has a policy that articles should be written in English matching the nationality of topic. It's that simple. On that note, I'm about to make the article conform to its South African English tag. Paulgush (talk) 21:47, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

– The past arguments against moving the page two or three years ago are not as strong as they once were. Australia's governing body is called Football Australia but the page is titled: Australia national soccer team as that is the most popular term in the country, like is the case in South Africa. The page for association football in South Africa uses the term "soccer," and if the name for this page were moved, it would provide for greater uniformity. Finally, the word "soccer" is the more popular term in South Africa and because the page requires the use of South African English and vernacular, it would make sense to change it to soccer.
