Rewrite needed edit

This article is in need of a rewrite. In fact, I don't think it is really needed at all. The article Solon contains basically the same info but in more detail and with greater regard for historical accuracy.Lucretius 23:02, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal edit

I propose to merge the articles Pentacosiomedimni, Zeugitae and Thetes into Solonian Constitution. Those articles are very short and most of the information is repeated. Tcp-ip (talk) 08:37, 15 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree partially with your proposal. I would encourage a merger of the articles as long as we included the Hippeis among the three, and, perhaps, call the article 'Classes of Ancient Athens' or something along those lines. Tradereddy (talk) 00:07, 16 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I had not included Hippeis because the term was used also outside Athens, as explained in the respective article, thus the content of that article cannot be completely included into this. About the title I would say that "Solonian Constitution" is fine. I propose to make a section in the article about the social classes, with the redirects from the merged articles pointing directly to that section. Tcp-ip (talk) 09:29, 29 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
I agree with both you and Tradereddy; the hippeis should be included into some article like that. The Solonian Constitution covers much more than that. There could be enough information in a 'Classes of Ancient Athens' to justify its own article if well written. The Hippeis article could remain its own article because it does have other uses outside Athens. Sbcloatitr (talk) 22:15, 30 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
There seems to be a consensus for a merge, and this should probably be to a section of "Solonian Constitution", although it would also be feasible to could be enough information in a 'Classes of Ancient Athens'. The former is simpler for now, and the latter can be considered subsequently.   Done Klbrain (talk) 15:33, 13 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

A point to consider edit

Hi all. I don't edit much on EN WP, but I've just edited the PT version of this article and was thinking about this merging proposal... First of all, like stated above, Hippeis should be included if the proposal is approved, since it's four categories. (Dillon, M., & Garland, L. (2010). Ancient Greece: Social and Historical Documents from Archaic Times to the Death of Alexander. Routledge, pp. 83-83. Viewing is available on Google Books). Second, the Solonian reforms weren't just about the classes. A very important aspect was the imposition of the Seisachtheia, the "lifting of the burdens", ending slavery by debt for Athenian citizens. So, my suggestion is either merging these five articles (the four classes and Seisachtheia) or leaving them as they are now. In favor of the last option, I'd like to make a point that these terms are very common to find in books and textbooks on Archaic Greece. Greetings, Domusaurea (talk) 17:57, 13 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
