Michael Jackson is only one of a variety of artists to record this song, many of which aren't even mentioned in the article... is there really a good reason to exclusively have a Michael Jackson info box at the bottom? - Ugliness Man 13:24, 11 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why is there a Westlife box at the bottom of this article - that is just spam. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.155.51.92 (talk) 03:19, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

A pop song from 1936...? // 213.89.240.241 (talk) 22:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oooh boy oh boy, this article needs a proper clean up.... this is about a song, not only one recording of the song. I would like to suggest it include: places where the song has been heard (eg: it was used in Attenborough's biopic of Chaplin), other recordings should be part of the article etc... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.8.120.133 (talk) 13:14, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Cover section edit

T The cover section is... well, to be charitable, let's just say it needs a lot of work. "At sundown on September 3, 2009, transsexual singer/songwriter and cleric, Alyras, [unwavering, life-long Michael Jackson fan], ..." Ugh. — John Cardinal (talk) 01:42, 23 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree, that mention should be removed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.156.76.95 (talk) 00:43, 10 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

i'm not going to get into an edit war with you john, but Connie has two albums with this song on it, you removed links to the particular albums, what was the harm with the wikilinks? Pga1965 (talk) 05:17, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Talbot entry included a lot of information that is not relevant to the song. How Talbot was discovered, release dates for her album, re-releases of the album, what songs were added or dropped, etc., should be covered in other articles, not here. Adding a link to Talbot and to the album upon which it appeared is enough for this not-particularly-notable versionridi of the song. — John Cardinal (talk) 14:04, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Michael Jackson section seems like yet another culous attempt by MJ fans to associate the man with everything... This section should be stricken from this article or expanded to include all other recordings of this song instead of putting more text about this deceased, self-proclaimed "king of pop" than there is about the song itself... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.251.166.143 (talk) 20:56, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Of course, the article had a healthy, growing list of all the recordings of this song. There is no reason why only the Michael Jackson version is mentioned. I'm reverting the changes. — Vytron (talk) 11:14, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
"All the recordings"? I don't care about the Jackson version. But a bald, mostly unannotated list of a small subset of the people who recorded this standard is not in any way useful. Wikipedia articles are expected to be information; dropping raw names like this is not. The whole point of standards is that everybody does them; it might be a lot more information to find artists who did standards that did not record this song. --jpgordon::==( o ) 15:50, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Please take a look at other pages for examples of why the versions of the song should stay: My_Way_(song) (Other versions) Volare_(song) (Other cover versions), Barbara_Allen_(song) (Versions), etc. Unless you are suggesting a change of policy in where recorded versions of songs should not be listed, there's no reason for removal. The list of Artists that did not sing the song is of course, much larger. And I came to the page to see what other artists recorded the song, and I found them, the information was useful to know. The list needs cleanup (currently the artists are sorted randomly) and more data (when was the song recorded?) so it is not just name dropping, but not cutting (you did not remove Michael Jackson's version section, which means the information of the other versions was incomplete in comparison, but they are as noteworthy as Michael's version, so instead of deleting them, their missing information should be added). Vytron (talk) 06:49, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

There should also be a part about how Robert Downey Jr. cover this song in his cd The Futurist.- Nero (UTC) 8:14 15 May 2013 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.5.209.129 (talk)

There is also no mention of the beautiful rendition Judy Garland did of this song in the early 1960's. The Judy Garland version happens to be one of the oldest versions after the original Nat King Cole version. It can be Youtube'd if wished.

Question edit

What about lyrics? With respect,212.92.233.164 (talk) 21:08, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

If you mean "Can we include the lyrics?", read WP:Lyrics. If you meant something else, rephrase your question more specifically and read WP:Lyrics. Also with respect, thank you. --RacerX11 Talk to meStalk me 21:55, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Disproportion edit

I agree that this article seems out of balance in favor of presenting it as a Michael Jackson song. One would think the focus should be about "Smile's" origin as a melody composed by Charlie Chaplin being turned into an adaptable standard. ShelbyMarion (talk) 14:53, 26 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree 110%. All that detail about MJ looks ridiculous. I am taking out the track listing and moving the section. Zaslav (talk) 20:32, 3 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Re: "Chaplin composed the music...". No, Chaplin credited himself with the music, and quite possibly believed he composed it as well, but in fact the music to this song and the entire score of Modern Times was composed by David Raksin under Chaplan's supervision as film director. Chaplan was not a composer or any kind of musician. TheScotch (talk) 00:44, 5 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

You have reliable source for that? - dcljr (talk) 13:34, 5 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
