Title edit

Should the article title have a middle name? (i.e. Serge Alexis Jaroff)

Transliteration of Jaroff edit

I first became aware of Jaroff from Deutsche Gramophon records in the 1960s. I had never heard his name pronounced, and I naturally assumed the transliteration was the German version, and the original must have been pronounced Yaroff (Яров). Only years later did I discover it was originally Жаров, pronounced Zharoff. Yet this is how the French would transliterate it. However, I see no evidence he ever had any significant association with France or ever lived there.

Why would a Russian who recorded for a German company use a French transliteration of his name, thus confusing generations of music lovers? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 23:05, 3 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
